It really obfusticates the charms of a work (or aspects thereof) when its most avid supporters struggle to advocate for it on its own merits rather than in comparison to something else; and when that's a prominent feature of a fandom it weakens the argument for it more than outright criticism does.

#or more bluntly i've seen a c3 post and an im*dna post in the main tag in the last 24 hours that do exactly that #and it's like. you are genuinely hurting the case bc you can't manage to scrape together praise for it only resentment for other things #this is also why so many ttrpg or actual play criticisms fail for me #by defining C1 and 2/C1 and C2 ships/D&D/CR on the whole as the benchmark you make it clear...it's the benchmark #why go for the thing you're whining that people believe fails to measure up when i could have the yardstick itself
