Summary

Since escaping Stillwater four years ago, Vi has searched for her sister, and the boy they grew up with, to no avail. Months since the last shred of a lead, the routine failures have found Vi at the bottom of a bottle and the end of a punch more often than not. But when an unlucky encounter throws her back on the run, she winds up in the employ of the Kirammans, a family of cattle barons also involved in both the nearby mine and the recently-arrived railroad. And before long, Vi finds herself and their heiress, a young debutante eager for something beyond Piltover, already ensnared in a web that will swallow everyone they love—unless Vi can find it in herself to face ghosts thought long-dead. Viktor and Jayce have been accelerating development of oil-burning engines for a few years now, and—with the help of Mel—making large strides with using their technology for railroad locomotive advancement. But after an experimental test for other applications goes horribly wrong, they find themselves splitting apart as Viktor's focus is drawn to other avenues of research...particularly that of improving lives in a much less traditional sense.

Jayce is so absorbed in the notes and bottles before him—notes on the titration process Viktor has been waiting to get his feedback on before altering variables further, he notes with a raised brow—that he doesn’t even look up as the door closes. Viktor approaches, finally clearing his throat. “Jayce. Good morning.” Jayce starts. He turns so fast his arm nearly sweeps a few of the bottles off the table—Jayce and Jinx share the same frenetic energy, he muses, though that’s about where their similarities end—face splitting into a wide grin. “Viktor! I didn’t expect you to be in so soon.” His voice doesn’t carry the fluster of deceit; Jayce is only brow-raisingly genuine, as he is in everything. Somehow, he didn’t expect Viktor to be in the laboratory this early, though there’s only half an hour until dawn and this is the time he has always arrived to work. Jayce's stare lingers for another few minutes, even when Viktor’s settled in his chair, cane tipped against the table. By now, he's moved onto annotating the paper from yesterday—Jinx had made a good point about the flammability, a few days ago, and he’d like to get that solved before moving any further; any potential crop yield increases will be useless if the machine itself will only set them aflame seconds later. Viktor sighs. “Jayce, I understand that it’s hard for you to resist focusing all of your attention on me—“ he hesitates; it's been some time since he's made one of his usual snide remarks along these lines, and he’s unsure if he’s suddenly crossed a newly unspoken boundary—“but I cannot focus with you staring like that.”
