What would you say to someone considering getting leopard geckos? Would you say that they're high maintenance?
i'm no expert, so i DEFINITELY recommend doing research of your own! but i can share what i've learned! :] they aren't high maintenance so much as kinda picky.
i keep my leos in a 20gal tank. reptar is in a 10 gal because she is so small but i do plan on moving her to a bigger one once she grows. it gives you enough space for all the proper hides without them being super far away from each other.
heat lamps/pads are necessary if you live somewhere where it can get cold! i live in michigan so naturally it's below freezing for half the year. i use lamps with ceramic bulbs as they give off lots of heat, and the gecks definitely appreciate it! heat pads are also an option, and are must more space-savvy.
as for hides, you should have multiples. for every gecko i have a main "cave" where they can sit, a humid hide in the middle, and a "cool" hide where they can go if they get too warm.
DO NOT USE SAND FOR SUBSTRATE these things are FOOLS and they will eat it. i use tile flooring cut to the right size for my fellas.
as for maintenance, things i do every day is moisten the humid hides, refill water, and feed them a few crickets. you should clean up after them when needed [which, fortunately, they usually pick a corner and stick to it lmao].
if you want to handle them, it's gonna take effort. zurg is the only one of my gecks i can handle, and that's because his previous owner handled him a lot. gibby and reptar were super chill with being moved around the first week, but i believe they were still settling in and have since gotten very wiggly, so i don't try to hold them much anymore. the way i've worked around radar and reptar being skittish is feeding them in a way where they can see your hand and will associate it with food. kinda keep your hand near them and they'll warm up to it. don't rush picking them up!
but YEAH that's all my tips n tricks, definitely do some research if you're unsure of anything! :]
