my gibsonhickey hot take of the day is that while they get slotted into being a multiple breakup on-and-off relationship in fandom aus their canon breakup was a direct result of the very real risk of being publicly tortured for having gay sex and gibson would not break up with hickey without an equivalent external pressure + hickey would not break up with gibson under any circumstances
