i have made multiple posts about this that I think tumblr unfortunately will never let me find again (I'll try, but I won't promise my search will bring in results), but to keep it very short: I personally think there are things in betty.mp3 that suggest that James and Betty could not openly be together for whatever reason (e.g.: why did they not dance together in the gym?), which would explain A) why James calls Betty's friends "stupid" and B) why kissing Betty openly and in public, unashamed, is the emotional climax of the song, and so while James is still a bit of a dumbass for sleeping with somebody else when they and Betty obviously had A Thing, I think it is far more complicated than the cheating narrative and James not being able to deal with the "we have to keep this a secret even though I want to be serious" thing does not make them a bad person. Also: that's a teenager.
