Hullo! I'm Liza, and I'm looking to get my masters in Library sciences in a few years (just got out of high school). What undergraduate degree would you say would be most helpful?
Hey Liza! Honestly, study what you’re most interested in! More important than knowing a lot about one subject area is developing some skills important in all kinds of libraries. The skills I use every day are:
Research skills. Look for classes that will have to do lots of library research, in the school’s library and if they have it, archives and special collections!
Communication skills. Looks for opportunities to improve public speaking, interviewing, and collaboration with others. Libraries are highly collaborative work environments so this is a must! Customer service skills are also important.
Tech skills. While you don’t need to know how to program (unless you want to go the route of a librarian who builds databases) being able to troubleshoot computer issues, keep files organized, and learn new computer tools quickly are essential. Knowing HTML and CSS and the basics of something like XML will go a long way in setting you apart, but those are things you can pick up in library school as well.
Also see if you can get a part time job or volunteer at your school’s or the local public library. Having library experience before going to library school is not required (I didn’t have any) but it can be a lot of fun and a good foot in the door.
Remember there are lots of different kinds of librarians out there. This is a quick guide to having a career as a librarian, and if you are thinking of something specialized like a music librarian, studying music history and media could be a good route. If someone wants to be a children’s librarian, it is not required that they study psychology or education, but often people do! Here’s a website that gives more information about librarian-related skills and the kinds of librarians that exist.
