Ok quick rundown of Emilia Perez so y'all don't have to subject yourselves to this shit (took me several attempts to make it through the whole movie)

Rita (rightful main character tbh) is a frustrated lawyer that knows she's defending criminals and doesn't even get the credit for her victories. She doesn't have a successful career. They acknowledge for a microsecond that part of that is because she's a racialized woman/ has darker skin.

One day she's contacted by Emilia Perez who at this time is known as Las Manitas del Monte (shit narco name honestly lmao), the leader of a fictional cartel and very much a fucked up person that has done a bunch of horrible shit.

(Honestly Emilia Perez doesn't feel as a character that was done in good faith and I'm surprised that there was a trans person involved in this)

So Manitas del Monte buys off Rita's loyalty and services to get her help to medically transition and fake her death so she can retire from being a narco. (And also leave her family) Manitas excuses all her crimes up to this point by pretty much saying that the only way she could get respect and remain closeted was to be a violent criminal, drug lord, and murderer, but she can't do it anymore. And by it she doesn't mean The Crimes™ but being closeted.

She flashes Rita I guess (to prove she's been in hrt for 2 years)

They convince an Israeli doctor to lead the team for the medical transition and also secure a fake identity so Manitas can start a brand new life as Emilia. Then Emilia gets All The Surgeries™ at the same time. Literally all the surgeries.

Which I guess included skin bleaching cause post transition Emilia is now blonde and suspiciously light skinned all of a sudden. Cause redemption means becoming white/ white passing (sarcasm, just it was a weird fucking choice and shows the racism this movie was built on)

They move her wife Jessi and their two children to Europe, cero context, kept absolutely in the dark about everything.

They fake Manitas' death and absolutely let her wife and two very young children believe she died

Rita gets the biggest payday of her life and leaves Mexico

Then 4 years later Emilia approaches her and is like DW bestie I'm not here to kill u lol. I just kinda realized I miss my children and I want them back. But also she doesn't want her family to know who she is, so they say she's a secret aunt and have them move in with her.

Now Emilia is stupidly wealthy and very much continues to live and benefit from blood money that came from her life of crime, she doesn't get a job or anything. She just goes from brown mad max desert thug / dog lord to wealthy blonde lady that lives in a man or with a full staff. Which uhhh... Yikes™ more racism ig

After this Rita and Emilia become friends, Rita is like hey don't you ever feel like guilty for all the fucked up shit you did bestie?

And Emilia at this point develops a conscience

She then pays off a murderer to locate the corpse of the young man he murdered and hand it over to his mom, who then kisses Emilia's hands in a gross gross exploitative moment that made me step away to play with my dog cause it honestly pissed me the fuck off

Emilia then is like "hey I like being the hero and facing no consequences 🥰😘😌 all criminals involved in the very real very violent drug violence in Mexico should get to experience redemption through handing back the remains of their victims and facing no consequences 🥰🥰😘🤗😚" which she turns into a charity funded by the corrupt government and the drug cartel leaders... That are the reason these people go missing and get killed (?) and the money doesn't go towards the families of the victims, it's to pay off the people that murdered them

There's a musical number about how all these corrupt people and murderers are gonna pay, literally pay cause there's no justice here. Just arguably money laundering cause the money very much just goes back to them. None of them face consequences or get outed as corrupt or criminals. They just literally pay in cash. Yay for justice through.... More impunity? I guess???

The charity organization becomes big, Emilia falls in love with a woman she meets through this charity.

Rita is once away put on the sidelines by a white person with money, but this time it's for charity! And redemption***!

So more racism, they coulda made a point there but they didn't really do it, they probably didn't realize they put Rita in the same situation she started in, but with more money

Then Jessi (Emilia's ex wife) breaks the news that she's getting married to a man she had an affair with while she was still married. And that she's taking the children away.

Emilia is Not Having This™ so she has Jessi's husband beat up and run out of town, then has an aggressive meltdown and tells Jessi she's not taking her children away

Everyone is shitty, Rita gets caught in the crossfire and playing referee between Jessi and Emilia

Jessi runs away with her children, then has her fiance kidnap Emilia

Rita goes to pay the random along with a small militia from Emilia's drug cartel days

Shit hits the fan, Emilia outs herself to Jessi.

Oh and also it's revealed that Emilia is a pedo ig who was well into her 20s-30s when she met Jessi, who was a 17 prostitute (the fiancee is her old pimp), Emilia was also initially dating Jessi's older sister, but says all along she only had eyes for Jessi, yanno, the underage sister.

They then die in a car explosion

Rita is left once again picking up the pieces after some white person that never faced consequences, but she gets to keep the mansion and adopt the kids

And then the whole shit show wraps up with Emilia being turned into a saint. Like they make her a statue dressed like a saint (actually la virgen de Guadalupe pero me da hueva explicar eso en inglés)

And that's the movie
