Hi @felkithecreator! Your artwork is SO PRETTY and the lighting has got me awestruck - it has inspired me to continue creating for this fandom. I admire you a lot, so I wrote this short piece for you as part of the Fan Joy July challenge based on your artwork. I hope thatâs okay!
âDo you glow?â Wind asked. He waved his Picto Box in Legendâs face, who jumped back, disgruntled. âDo I what?â âThe captain says mermaids glow,â the kid repeated. âThe captainâs telling fibs,â Legend said flatly. Wind stuck out his tongue. He retaliated in kind. âIâve got fairy lights in my pack,â Wind offered. He shoved his arm inside the bag quickly and emerged with a long string. âWe could⊠make mermaids glow.â â...It would serve the captain right,â Legend considered. * Legend flicked his webbed ears irritably and drifted a little in the current. Wind had taken a few hasty photos and then vanished into the abyss above for air, supposedly. He was taking a while. Legend blew out a few bubbles of air, then pushed upwards. âSailor?â The mermanâs head slipped out of the water without a ripple. Behind him, his tail twirled and twisted, loose in the dark lake, lit up in bright strips of gold by the fairy lights Wind had wound around him. Legend propped his head on his arms by the lakeâs edge and peered over Windâs shoulder, trying to see the screen of the Picto Box. âI feel like a decorated tree,â he grumbled. Wind shot him a glance out of the corner of his eye. âYou donât look like a decorated tree,â the kid said quietly. âYou look likeâŠâ âWhat?â âLike a magical fish,â Wind admitted. âAlso like you might eat me.â âGimme that.â Legend shoved him with one cold wet forearm and snatched the Picto Box away. He slid further down into the water as he squinted at the photo. âItâs not half badââ he started, taken aback by the glow of the fairy lights on his pink scales and warm skin. Even the jewellry adorning his hands glinted sharp and gold in the shadowy water. Heâd insisted on holding the Master Sword in the shot, too, because he knew how much it would piss Sky off even though she was a magical blade, wasnât she? A bit of water wouldnât hurt her. The engravings on the hilt reflected the light, and so did his eyesâ âOh,â he said. Wind popped up next to him. âRight?â he agreed. âYouâre a bit scary.â Legend hadnât realised his eyes turned that colour when he wore the mermaid skin. Maybe it was a trick of the light, but they shone in the dim water, bright violet, the whites of his eyes almost red against his hair and gills. He brushed a dripping finger over the photo. The triforce was in his eyes. He looked wild. He looked like a princeling of ocean storms and swarms of golden fish. Wind had captured his neck at such an angle that it looked impossibly slender, frilled, with the divot of his collarbones naked in the pool of his throat. âI do look a bit like I might eat you,â he said. He snapped his teeth at Wind, playful. The kid yelped and then shoved him, laughing.

Mythology, Folklore and Behind the Scenes Fact File
Welcome to the fact file for Foolish Fire, a place where you can find more information on the background of the inspirations behind my Secret Santa gift for the amazing @popjunkie42-blog đ
All of the inspiration I have taken from myths and folktales have been adapted to the story I am trying to tell, but where I have made creative adjustments, I will try to point out the changes below.
Erebus Forest In Greek mythology, Erebus is the personification of darkness. Some Ancient Greek authors also use Erebus to describe the particular form of gloom found in the Underworld. The concept of Erebus is most famously mentioned in Homer's Iliad, in which Erebus is the physical location that Hercules must venture into to collect the three-headed dog Cerberus. This mythology inspired the name of the forest in Foolish Fire due to the importance of how dark this particular forest gets and the impact this has within this story.
Will-o'-the-wisps These little creatures are tricky beings found in numerous forms in various European folktales. Traditionally known for mimicking the flickering light of a lantern, will-o'-the-wisps use their light to deceive weary travellers into getting lost.
Within this story, I decided to make it so that the will-o'-the-wisps are utilised by other creatures in the forest to capture prey and have a particular ability to cause a dreamlike trance in their victims. The title for this fic comes from the Latin translation for Will-oâ-the-Wisp (ignis fatuus), which directly translates to foolish fire in English.
Belisama Lake The lake Feyre finds herself wading into during Foolish Fire is called Belisama Lake, a name inspired by the Celtic Goddess of lakes and fire, whose name, it has been reported, translates to âMost Mighty Oneâ. During the Roman period, the river currently known as Ribble River, which runs through the North of England, was referred to as the Belisama in honour of the Goddess.
The Monster in the Lake The creature Feyre encounters in the waters of the Erebus forest was inspired by a mixture of one very famous creature from Scottish folklore, and an aquatic beast from approximately 240 million years ago.
The Loch Ness Monster The concept of creatures lurking beneath the surface in large bodies of water was not new in 1933 when the Loch Ness Monster was first brought to light on a global scale, however, Nessie is perhaps the most famous of all mythological lake monsters. Nestled in the Scottish Highlands, Loch Ness attracts vast numbers of tourists every year, hoping to catch a glimpse of the famed creature who is said to reside there.
The Nothosaurus Whilst the inspiration to add an underwater challenge to Foolish Fire came from the legend of Loch Ness, the real-life inspiration for the creature itself comes from a long extinct semi-oceanic reptile, who at 14 metres in length, dominated waters in the Triassic Period. The Nothosaurus was a carnivorous animal with needle-like teeth and a thick tail that acted as a paddle to steer it through the water.
The Empusa This shape-shifting female, with one copper leg (and sometimes a donkeyâs leg, too), is commanded by Hecate in Greek mythology and uses her abilities to seduce and feed on young men. For this reason, she was compared to a vampire in the âDictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythologyâ by William Smith (1849).
In Foolish Fire, the Empusa roams the woodlands of Pythian and is one of the most wanted creatures by all seven High Lords for the numerous violent deaths she causes yearly.
The Waterfall The waterfall Rhys and Feyre stumble upon in chapter three is inspired by Plitvice Lakes National Park and the stunning waterfalls that are found there.
The glowing element of the waterfall is inspired by the natural beauty of bioluminescent waters like those found in many locations such as New Zealand, Cambodia and the Maldives.
The Red Shoes The Red Shoes is a Danish fairytale, written by Hans Christian Anderson in the mid-1800's. It has been adapted numerous times, perhaps most famously in 1948 in a film adaptation by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. The tale also inspired singer-songwriter Kate Bush's seventh studio album of the same name.
The Cyclops Over the years there were many interpretations of cyclops in Greek mythology, famously however, three talented cyclopes named Arges, Steropes, and Brontes, help to craft Zeus's thunderbolt. With their distinct single eye in the centre of their heads, cyclopes are incredibly recognisable characters, even in the modern age.
Cerberus Hades three-headed dog Cerberus is the famed creature who guards the gates to the Underworld. His three heads and serpents tails makes him an incredibly terrifying creature in Greek mythology, but in Foolish Fire a baby Cerberus is the sweetest of all little pups and makes the perfect addition to Feyre and Rhysand's perfect little family.

Writing Tag Game
Thanks for the tag @cleverblackcat and @tejaswrites!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
12 as of now, though some of them are parts of the same story and I might weave them all in a single work one day, but I decided to split them due to time skips and changes in tone. I donât know when Iâll be able to bridge all the gaps but I still wanted to share what I wrote, so I ended up creating a series with a couple of installments.
2. Whatâs your total AO3 word count?
140 699 words
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Watch the Skies - 125 kudos
Vatna of Two Falcon Hold as a companion in Dragon Age - 8 kudos
Mirrors and Braidsïżœïżœex aequo Rattle the bars if you like, but I chose to enter this cage - 7 kudos
Aval'var, it means - our journey ex aequo Avvar History Reconstruction - 5 kudos
4. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Yes, I do respond to almost every comment and I really appreciate receiving them. When someone comments on certain aspects of the story, I usually try to explain some of my choices, like why I decided for that character to react in such a way, why I deviated from the canonical storyline, or why I included those lore tidbits. It allows me to share my perspective, my reasons for writing the story in the first place.
5. Whatâs the fic youâve written with the angstiest ending?
Well, I have started writing an alternative storyline for my Avvar Inquisitor, Vatna, in which she becomes a part of the Jaws of Hakkon, which ought to be super angsty, but it has no ending yet.
6. Whatâs the fic youâve written with the happiest ending?
Do limericks count? Theyâre fun but each is five verses long.
7. Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one youâve written?
I had, in fact, the first fic that I wrote was a crossover between Dragon Age and Puella Magi - itâs just not published on AO3 and probably never will. It's pretty crazy, thatâs for sure, given how wildly different those two pieces of media are, though strangely, I found a few of thematic parallels that compelled me to explore them for a while.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
No, and I hope Iâll be spared from it. My writing is not perfect by any means, and I do welcome constructive criticism and corrections, but I probably wouldnât deal well with hate comments. Mustering motivation to write fics is hard enough as it is.
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
No, not really. I have written some scenes that focused on sexual interactions, but they werenât quite smutty, if that makes sense, as the POV character is a sex-indifferent asexual.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
No.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No. I write in English, even though it isnât my native tongue, so I could probably translate my own fics if I wanted, but I didnât feel like it so far. If someone approached me with an offer to translate my fic into a language I donât speak, Iâm not sure what my reaction would be, as Iâd like to know how they present my characters in the translated version. Translation is a tricky craft, and there are many ways to express a single concept. Sometimes, a translated work has a completely different tone from the original.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yeah, I wrote Fool's Gold with Toshi Nama as a part of Discord server collaboration, in which her Warden, Farin Brosca, and my Inquisitor, Vatna Einarsdotten, meet up to investigate a red lyrium smuggling operation in the Frostback Mountains. It was a fun challenge!
13. Whatâs your all-time favorite ship?
Iâm not sure, I donât focus on shipping that much.
14. Whatâs a WIP that you want to finish but donât think you ever will?
I probably wonât get back to finish my unpublished crossover xD But I enjoyed thinking about the possibilities, and I did have the general storyline thought out, but I donât think I could finish it. For one, it would take a lot of time and motivation that I donât have, and if I ought to pick a project I would like to see till the end, itâs the story of my Avvar girl.
15. What are your writing strengths?
Iâve been told my worldbuilding is well-thought out. I do have the benefit of writing fanfiction, so thereâs no need to built a world from ground up, but I do expand upon whatâs presented in the original work, and I greatly enjoy it. I wonder a lot about the unexplored details, like when Iâm writing about the Avvar, I imagine what kind of holidays they could celebrate, what cultural taboos they might observe, what is their main source of food, how their families could be structured, little things like that, which, hopefully, create a compelling picture together.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
My pacing is probably not that great, when I think about what Iâd like to write, I donât really ensure that each story beat is nicely spaced out, that there are no sudden accelerations or decelarations of plot. I do have a general plotline in my head, for the most part, but when it comes to writing, I focus on individual chapters.Â
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I think it has its time and place, but I believe it should be done sparingly. I wouldnât be excited to read a super long dialogue in a language different from the one that the work is written in, and I wonât include such things in my fic. It disrupts the flow and doesnât benefit the story very much, in my opinion. If itâs necessary for the plot or characterization to show that someone speaks in another language, I think itâs enough to use a foreign word or a phrase from time to time, hint at its meaning through context, and describe how the communication barrier affects the characters.
My main character, Vatna, does alternate between her native tongue (Avvar, which is I represent as Icelandic/Old Norse) and a second language (Common Tongue, which for all my intents and purposes is equivalent to English) so I do include some lines in a different language, but I keep them short. Usually, itâs just a single word whose meaning can be easily inferred from the surrounding text. More often than not, I signify the language barrier through other means. Sometimes, Vatna slips into her native tongue for a longer moment, and she may even have conversations with her fellow Avvar, but the actual dialogue remains in English (i.e. Common) - instead, I use the narration to show that the language barrier is ever present, like describing the reaction of accompanying characters.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Dragon Age
19. Whatâs your favorite fic youâve written?
My favourite is Mirrors and Braids, a part of the Saga of the Avvar-Daughter series, which focuses on Vatnaâs reaction to the loss of her arm. Though itâs not really a âfunâ story by any means, I am quite fond of it. It was somewhat cathartic to write.
