Hey. do you ever think about when Azula said
I’m about to celebrate becoming an only child
Because I think about that sometimes. At length

reblogging with your tags because I think of this CONSTANTLY
#azula#atla#zuko#truest form of like... azula demonstrating that she is still a kid#that line is like.. it sounds horrible and cruel and even sadistic#and initially you think wow she's crazy and evil#but it is also so terribly immature in a way#its a sibling taunting a sibling#its really unnecessary#she does it because it is Zuko#her big brother Zuko#from Azula's pov she has no reason to fear him#she knows she is better than he is#she is the prodigy. he the failure#she's always been ahead of him#he is not a threat#not really#she doesnt actually need him to die. and maybe she doesnt even really want him to die either#but she's definitely been brought up hearing all the time that zuko is insignificant#when it comes to an heir and a spare HE is the spare not she#there are more important things she could be doing with her time#the whole gaang is there#the AVATAR is there. getting away no less#but she still bothers to do her big entrance on a plateau and taunt Zuko#because it's fun. it's her big brother. its BANTER#its what theyve always done#you cannot tell me she has not /missed/ that#in those three years that zuko has been gone.. she's also lost something#all the more room for ozai to sink his claws deeper into her#no mother. no zuko. just her and the old man

The “immature” observation popped out to me, immature as in young. Because it’s not even celebrating Zuko being gone. Its celebrating being an only child–celebrating having no one else her parent(s) could love, could admire, could spend time and attention on. (Celebrating not having to compete anymore, perhaps?)
Even when it’s about Zuko, it’s actually about Ozai, and the desperate struggle they were locked into (and that Zuko only recently stepped away from) for their Father’s love. Because when you’re a kid, wanting your parents to love you and show you affection is a (normal) guiding for in your life.
Not to mention, Zuko stepping away and saying 'I am not a part of this anymore' and renouncing his abuser, disallowing him to have power over him, must have also had an impact on Azula.
She, though she may not consciously be aware of it at that point in time, is EQUALLY being mistreated by their father by not being allowed to be a child, or even a person. Her identity is steeped in her ability to please him, and to outshine Zuko. Because to Ozai, his children are simply tools at worst, or reflections of him at best, not individuals that might have their own desires, needs and goals.
It is ALWAYS about Ozai. Because the fire siblings are children. And children, in general, want to be good; want to be loved. It just so happens that their environment, and their caretakers most of all, shape their idea of what that entails.
