My theory is that your pet will usually understand your babble equally well in any language, and won't judge, so they're a good friend to practice on.
Idk why the smallness of the little kitten makes me break out into Spanish when baby talking to him. Spanish is not my first language but some things are yet to be explained by science
#downside: i get into the habit of telling the dog 'nee' (dutch; sounds exactly like english 'nay') instead of no#when dog is doing behavior i don't like#then niece asks why i'm telling HER 'nee' when she's about to do something i don't want her to#look child i'm sorry you are also small and cute and doing something you absolutely shouldn't#i vaguely say something about how 'nay' is a different way to say 'no'#and don't tell her that i cut myself off before saying 'nee dat moet je niet doen!' as i do when the dog lunges for questionable roadkill#at least i managed better than my mother#who told me 'dat moet je niet doen' all the time as a kid#but once in high school added emphasis to the 'you mustn't do that' by changing it to 'you mustn't do that - hear?!'#'dat moet je niet doen hoor!'#alas i did not know that's what the word meant#neither did mom tbqh she just was parroting her mother#her mother who had herself had to explain that 'hoor' was an emphasis word and not 'whore'#but mom was so angry she didn't think and it slipped out#and that's how 15yo me got 'called a whore' by my loving mild-mannered mother who treats 'crap' as if it's THE c-word#dogs and children: recipients of odd language choices
