‘Ecological Intelligence’, S. Sterling – A critique of the UN Sustainable Development Goal framework

‘Ecological Intelligence’ is the tenth chapter in the 2009 ‘Handbook of Sustainability Literacy’ (ed. A. Stibbe). This chapter discusses the need to change our mentality and think more critically when considering matters of sustainability and the environment. Amongst other things, Sterling discusses ten dominant assumptions which were applied when approaching any problem. He then goes on to say that these assumptions have since changed, and a new set of assumptions was implemented(1). Whilst reading this chapter, I realised that I could apply the assumptions to my own opinions about the UN SDGs. Each assumption had some link to the way in which the SDGs were created and structured. After researching a bit further into the SDGs, I discovered that they were actually a follow-on plan from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), created in 2000 as part of the first 15-year agenda towards a sustainable world. Eight goals, with a total of 21 targets aiming to “combat poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and discrimination against women”(2) implemented in 2000, the MDGs were the culmination of decades of summits and meetings between world leaders.

Although the MDGs did have some successes (3), there were other areas which did not improve or even got worse. The SDGs were an attempt by the UN to go beyond the boundaries of the MDGs and do better. We can look at the MDGs and apply the dominant assumptions seen in ‘Ecological Intelligence’; in theory, the SDG framework should fit the new assumptions, since they are supposed to be an improvement, a more advanced system if you will. However, some sectors outlined in the SDGs are already failing, and through reading the facts, figures and targets of each goal, I found myself being able to apply the old dominant assumptions to the new Development Goals. Which leads me to ask – If the new SDGs were intended to be an improvement on the old MDGs, why is this the case? Furthermore, will the Un simply continue to make new goals with new deadlines until they get it right? Surely this cannot be a sustainable approach…

These are the 10 dominant assumptions referred to by Sterling: 1. Problem-solving - the belief that there is a solution to every problem 2. Analysis - if we look at the details of a "complex whole" we will be able to understand it 3. Reductionism - the whole is no more than the sum of its parts 4. Cause-effect - most processes can be described as "linear" - there is a definite start and end point 5. Atomism - most issues are independent of each other and unrelated 6. Narrow boundaries - we shouldn't feel the need to look beyond our own concerns and needs; anything which does not involve or concern us is outside of our circle and we should not pay attention to it 7. Objectivism - when analysing anything or making a judgement, our feelings should be excluded so as to be completely objective, which is "possible and necessary" 8. Dualism - the idea of putting a boundary around something which we value in order to distinguish it from anything that it is not (in order to define it) 9. Rationalism - a rational response is the most efficient way through which something may be understood 10. Determinism - "a belief in certainty, prediction, and the possibility of control"

And here is how I believe we can apply them to the MDGs and SDGs: 1. Problem-solving: The belief that there is a solution to every problem in the world and that it can be solved through an MDG/SDG 2. Analysis: the idea of "targets" within each Goal 3. Reductionism: The idea that there is nothing more to the Goals than their targets 4. Cause-effect: The suggestion that there was a start point to every problem identified in the MDGs SDGs and that there will be a definite end point (2015/2030) 5. Atomism: The suggestion that the MDGs/SDGs should be looked at individually and are not interconnected (some targets may inhibit others, there seems to be little thought about how all 21 or 169 targets could be interconnected) 6. Narrow boundaries: Only doing what is possible within the realms of our life to help achieve the Goals instead of going out of our way to do something. 7. Objectivism: Lack of proper consideration/empathy for LEDCs compared to MEDCs when making policies/targets 8. Rationalism: Not thinking outside the box when coming up with solutions to the problems presented by MDGs/SDGs. This is especially the case with the old MDGs that only had 21 targets, compared to the 169 for the SDGs, showing the lack of depth or breadth. 9. Determinism: The year set as the end point for the SDGs is 2030 (and 2015 for the MDGs), there is a belief that we could control/predict the year in which the SDGs will be completed. The fact that a specific year was set for all 17 goals (8 for the MDGs) goes to show this. [As you can see, one assumption from the list above (Dualism) has been omitted due to lack of a supporting argument linking it directly to either the MDGs or the SDGs.]

Here are the new assumptions, which I believe should only be applicable to the SDGs, since they were designed to be an improvement: 1. Positive synergies - developing solutions which generate more solutions rather than problems 2. Larger context - looking at the bigger picture, at the issue/idea/object as a whole, not just at the details 3. Emergent properties - these are shown in complex systems; a complex system will possess properties which the individual components of it do not 4. Feedback loops - looking at what influenced the start, and what are the "knock-on effects" at the end 5. Interrelation - most issues/events are not independent of each other and are in fact related, thinking of them in this way will allow them to be better understood 6. Boundaries - refers to the need for us to expand our worldview and re-evaluate our "boundaries of concern" - not everything is about our individual experience 7. Relationship over opposition - opposites can be in a relationship, one should not be valued over the other, they should be considered together 8. Objectivity - complete objectivity is not possible. Instead we must think about how we fit into the bigger picture, and how we are involved in the perception and interpretation of the world 9. Left brain and right brain - balancing intellect with intuition and rational with non-rational thinking 10. Impossibility to predict - it is impossible to predict outcomes. Therefore, we must accept uncertainty and lack of control, and learn from the change.

Whilst some of these may be true for the Sustainable Development Goals, many still are not. For example, number 10 – the impossibility to predict: the new Goals have still got a deadline, we have not accepted the fact that this may not be achievable, despite seeing the MDGs fail in the same time frame with fewer Goals and Targets. Why would the same amount of time be equally applied to something which demands more from the population and the scientific community?

Some targets have already seen failure only 5 years into the new plan. Target 12.5 (Reduce Waste) is going the opposite way it should be: “The total amount of solid waste generated is projected to almost double from 3.5 million tonnes a day in 2010 to 6.1 million tonnes a day in 2025”(4).

Overall, I would say that this goes to show we are living in a sort of dystopian future. The initial 15-year agenda did not work, so it got extended and re-imagined. We are not where our leaders predicted us to be in some areas of the new agenda, and unless drastic changes are made, it looks like we will be seeing some new Development Goals in 2030.

Netgear Nighthawk AX8 AX6000 WiFi 6 Router Review

WiFi 6 is the newest Wi-Fi standard, and it promises faster speeds, enhanced security, and a whole host of other benefits. Rollout has been slow, both in terms of devices that support the new standard, as well as routers that’ll form the backbone of your faster network.

The Netgear Nighthawk AX8 AX6000 is among a handful of WiFi 6-enabled routers available in India right now. Let’s take a closer look at this futuristic-looking router to see if it’s a future-proof networking solution for your home.

Netgear Nighthawk AX8 AX6000 design and specifications

We’ve seen some routers designed to blend in with their surroundings, but it’s safe to say that the Netgear Nighthawk AX8 AX6000 is not one of them. It has a visually striking design that resembles a spaceship with “wings” that extend upwards on either side.

Each wing contains two “high-performance” antennas. Thankfully, the wings can be folded inwards when you want to put the router away. To be clear, the router works even when the wings are folded, but there’s likely to be some impact on its performance.

All the ports are at the back of the router, and the status LEDs are on the top but towards the back, which is a bit odd. What’s worse, the LEDs are really faint, and at times we really struggled to see them especially when the room was well lit. There’s a physical switch to turn the LEDs on/ off (right next to the Reset button), but no way to control their intensity, not even via the software settings.

Right next to the LEDs are two physical buttons — WiFi and WPS. The latter is self-explanatory, letting you quickly add a Wi-Fi device to the network using the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) protocol, while pressing the former for a couple of seconds toggles Wi-Fi off or on. We are not sure about the utility of this button, especially since it toggles the main Wi-Fi network; mapping it to the guest network would’ve made a bit more sense.

You get five Gigabit LAN ports, one WAN port, and two USB 3.0 ports. You can aggregate two Gigabit LAN ports for higher speed if your device supports that, and Netgear says aggregation can work for your Internet connection as well, by utilising one of the LAN ports in addition to WAN, if your ISP supports that. This means the router supports Internet speeds of up to 2Gbps. Of course, no ISP in India offers anything near that yet, but it’s nice to know you have that option for the future.

Thanks to WiFi 6 support, this router is future-proof in a bunch of other respects as well. You get theoretical Wi-Fi speeds of up to 1.2Gbps over the 2.4GHz spectrum, and up to 4.8Gbps over 5GHz. There’s support for beamforming and 160MHz channel, with the promise of Gigabit Wi-Fi speeds to devices that support these underlying technologies.

WiFi 6 also brings a host of other improvements, including OFDMA support, which is designed to ensure that the slow devices connected to this router don’t bring the entire network to a halt. This router also supports 4X4 MU-MIMO, which means you can have a total of 8 Wi-Fi streams (4 in each band) at the same time, which increases the total bandwidth available to devices. All this means that — in theory at least — you should be able to stream high quality video simultaneously on multiple devices, while still having enough bandwidth for, say, competitive gaming, provided you have a fast enough Internet connect, of course.

The router is powered by a quad-core CPU running at 1.8GHz and we could hear a fan power up every time we restarted it. We didn’t hear them at any other time, though that might change if the router is really stressed with dozens of devices flooding tonnes of data onto the network at the same time.

Netgear Nighthawk AX8 AX6000 getting started, software, and features

Getting started with the router using the Web-based interface on a PC was pretty simple and we didn’t face any problems during the initial setup. You can also download the Nighthawk app to set up and administer the router, but it requires you to create a Netgear.com account, which was a red flag in itself. What’s more, the amount of control that you get beyond the initial setup is pretty limited, and you’ll need to use the Web-based interface to modify anything of significance.

By default, separate networks (SSIDs) are created for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels, though you have the option to merge them and let the router figure out channel allocation for each device. You can also enable guest networks, again with the option of having separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz SSIDs.

Advanced users will be happy to note that nearly all the features you would expect are supported. This includes Dynamic DNS, port forwarding and triggering, remote management, and even a built-in VPN server. There’s a Traffic Meter that lets you monitor overall Internet usage and, optionally, alert you by flashing an LED Amber/ Green when the user-defined limits are reached, or disable Internet access altogether.

The aforementioned Internet and WAN port aggregation capabilities are also prominently featured within the settings. The USB ports support Netgear’s ReadySHARE, which lets you easily share any connected drive or printer with devices on the local network or on the Internet, run a DLNA media server, and even lets a drive serve as a backup destination for the computers on the network. However, we plugged in a 128GB pen drive to the port, as well as an SSD and neither were detected. A Samsung laser printer we connected to the router wasn’t detected either.

The only available QoS control level is “automatic”, which, when enabled, uses an online database to optimise traffic on your network, theoretically giving priority to apps that would require faster access to the Internet. We would’ve liked more granular controls to this aspect of the router’s performance.

There are no meaningful parental controls, though you have the ability to block websites based on keywords and domain names. You can also block services based on the ports they work on.

The router is listed to support Alexa and Google Assistant for things like quickly toggling the guest Wi-Fi network with a voice command. The feature worked as advertised with Alexa, though we didn’t have the same luck with Google Assistant, despite managing to link our Netgear account as required.

Testing this router wasn’t easy due to the dearth of WiFi 6 devices in the market. The only ones that we had for an extended amount of time were an iPhone 11 and a Samsung Galaxy S10e. We decided to run a bunch of file transfer tests between these devices and a PC connected to the router using wired Gigabit Ethernet. We compared the results to what we observed when running the same tests with all devices connected to a Netgear Orbi, which is among the fastest 802.11ac routers we’ve tested.

While there was no visible indication on the iPhone that we were connected to a WiFi 6 network, the Samsung Galaxy S10e showed a tiny “6” overlaid over the regular Wi-Fi icon. The phone also showed the Netgear Nighthawk AX8 AX6000-powered network as capable of peak theoretical speeds of 1200Mbps, compared to 780Mbps for the Orbi.

As for actual tests, with the Samsung Galaxy S10e placed a couple of feet away from the Netgear Orbi with a clear line of sight between them, we were able to transfer a 25.9GB file from our computer to the phone using the popular file sharing app AirDroid in 9 minutes and 45 seconds. When we connected both the devices to Netgear Nighthawk AX8-powered WiFi 6 network, the same transfer, at the same distance from the router was completed in 6 minutes and 30 seconds.

With the iPhone 11, the AirDrop transfers were even quicker, taking 8 minutes and 07 seconds to transfer the same file over the 802.11ac network, and 5 minutes, 02 seconds over the WiFi 6 network.

We then tried transferring files between the two phones, with the two still just a couple of feet away from the routers. With the Orbi, the file transfer was completed in 15 minutes and 05 seconds, with the Nighthawk AX8 enabling the transfer in just 10 minutes and 45 seconds.

To mix things up a bit, we moved both phones about 25 feet away from the routers, but still with clear lines of sight between all devices. Transfer time using the Orbi-powered 802.11ac network dropped to 19 minutes and 15 seconds, while the Nighthawk AX8 AX6000 enabled the transfer to be completed in 13 minutes and 4 seconds.

Though Netgear optimistically lists the Wi-Fi range of the Netgear Nighthawk AX8 AX6000 as “very large homes” (instead of an actual figure), in our experience, the range was only slightly bigger than that of an individual Orbi node.

Verdict

There will be a time WiFi 6 will be ubiquitous, and the Wi-Fi experience in our homes and offices will, hopefully, be a whole lot better. Unfortunately, that time isn’t here yet. While we are starting to see some WiFi 6 devices hit the market, it’s still very much limited to top-end devices, and very select ones at that.

So if you are looking to buy a premium router with a budget of about Rs. 25,000, you have a decision to make. If you want to buy something that will serve you well for the next three to five years, you could buy something like the Nighthawk AX8 AX6000 and be pretty happy with the experience.

Its day-to-day performance is very good, the range is better than that of most routers, and you get a product that’s future-proof. However, if you have a very large home and you value getting Wi-Fi coverage in every corner today, you’d be better served by a premium mesh Wi-Fi solution like the Netgear Orbi.

A brief history of bad times, part 1

So hi, it’s been a while.

Quick answers to your questions:

- Yeah, i probably should do that podcast. Sorry. I recorded a bunch of interviews with cool people but never had the faith in myself or what I was doing to actually fully press ahead with it. It’ll likely see the light of day soon.

- Yeah, i will blog some more. Spoiler alert, I have like 3 tours worth of absolute nonsense with a particular band to write about that i’m trying to structure in my head. It’ll happen, probably soon. Difficult second album and all that. The thing is, 2017 has actually been a great year for me as far as the tours I’ve been a part of and there hasn’t been that beautiful air of resentment about my life choices that was present the year prior. And as far as the ones i’ll be writing about, I guess I wanted to let the dust settle on them a bit.

- Yeah, old blue is still running. German engineering, right?

EDIT: I’d originally intended this to be a single post about a fairly short tour as it wasn’t quite as action packed as the last one, but I guess I really know how to waffle on when I’m whinging. I think this will probably be in 3 parts if this is anything to go by.

So, with that out of the way, let’s take a brief stop in early spring 2016. It’d been a really rough end to 2015, and with an impressively lengthy and expensive MOT in January behind me i’d had to pick up basically whatever I could get in terms of work to, you know, not starve to death in an alley somewhere. It was around this time I had one of my favourite tours ever with Allison Weiss and Jenny Owen Youngs (that’s them up there in the cover photo, don’t they look pleasant, well behaved and friendly?) but pretty soon afterwards I had a period where i had to kind of jam a few short runs together. Basically the sort of thing where i’d be finishing a tour in Liverpool one night, then starting another tour in Norwich the next night with a drop off in London inbetween.

Well, exactly that, actually. It meant agreeing to do some silly, inadvisable driving stints, but that’s pretty much my M.O at this point and I really needed the money. Plus the second run was with Ducking Punches who i’d previously had some great experiences with. I just had to get through 5 days on a metal tour first. I hadn’t had the best of times with metal bands prior to this (just you wait…) so I wasn’t exactly foaming at the mouth to get out on this run, but also it was only 5 days, how miserable could it be?

“I’ve brought Green Street, let’s stick it on. Can’t wait to get fucked up and go to a strip club tonight.”

Ah, fuck.

So day one of this run is an early morning pickup in London followed by a full days drive up to Newcastle for the first show. The band are tour support so there’s no backline/major stress about being there early, as is evident by us leaving a good hour or so later than planned after one of the guys slept in AND decided to go for breakfast.

First impressions, the guys all seem alright. Guitarist is a bit of a geezer and a bit of a scene veteran, clearly the driving force behind this band. Friendly enough, but you can imagine him trying to gouge your eyes out with a broken bottle after a minor disagreement about what the best Metallica album is. Drummer is a total space cadet, who doesn’t really seem to have much of a vested interest in being at all helpful ever at any time. He constantly wanders off during load ins and load outs leaving everyone else to carry his stuff. Also none of his stuff is in cases, that kind of drummer. Second guitarist and bassist I learn are temps as the band doesn’t have a full time solid lineup. Both very pleasant guys who didn’t have the perceived ego of the ‘actual’ band and were fairly chatty. Finally, the vocalist is the guy who got here late and decided to go eat, making us later. He’s a bit posh, a bit quiet, but seems alright.

So we finally get on our way, and roughly half an hour into the journey DISASTER strikes. One of the TV’s in the back loses power, and they can only watch Green Street on one screen.We’ve previously covered my anxiety when it comes to things like this, and so with this being the first day of a new tour with a new bunch of people I don’t know, I want to try and get it resolved ASAP. I pledge to stop once we’re out of London and take a look at it. This apparently isn’t good enough for geezer guitarist who continues to moan about not being able to watch a film about football hooligans that he’s probably already watched 15 times this year. I carry on regardless, until about 5 minutes later when a horrible acrid burning smell reaches me. I shout to the back, and the verdict is that they can’t see or smell any evidence of a fire or anything to be worried about. I pull over anyway.

It turns out that one of the power cables leading to the now defunct TV has overheated and is melting into itself. I remove the fuse, apologise, and break the news that it’s unlikely that this TV will be back online for the remainder of the tour. Green Street Geezer Guitarist is understandably mortified and begins to display the five stages of grief.

“Nah, it’s fine. I can’t believe this, FUCK! Is there nothing we can do to fix it? This is the worst, I just bought 5 new DVDs for this tour. Alright, fine, we’ll just stream the Chelsea match on my phone instead.”

After a long, football violence-less drive, we arrive in Newcastle. I’m informed we have a travelodge for the night, and we’ll check in there before we load in to the venue. It’s fairly central so i’m a bit worried about parking, but Newcastle isn’t too bad for city centre parking and i’m feeling good about having a bed. We load in, I go for some food with the vocalist and we make the kind of awkward small talk two people who clearly have nothing in common make. I get a pizza with chips on. It’s not good.

I stay for the show, the band are really not to my taste and the headliners even less so. Looks like i’ll be sitting in the van playing 3DS a fair few nights on this run then.

We head back to the travelodge fairly soon after the gig has finished which was surprisingly efficient, but it turns out it’s only because they’re all keen to shower and get changed before they go out and visit Newcastle’s finest clothing removal specialists. I’ve got a key to the room and they don’t need to get in the van, so i have a good nights sleep in a bed.

Day 2 we’re up at a reasonable hour. Those who went out apparently had a great time but are feeling a bit worse for wear, so the consensus is a spoons breakfast, obviously. Spoons is a happy place where nothing bad ever happens, so not much to say about that.

Show 2 is in Peterborough, a grotty forgettable town. Really, that’s what it says on the sign. The gig is super uneventful, and after I realise there’s a huge 24 hour Asda within walking distance of the venue that’s me sorted for entertainment for the evening.

We’re heading to London afterwards to stay at grimey green street guitar geezers gaffe so we have a bit of a drive, which is made all the more fun with a drop off in Welwyn Garden on the way as the singer wants to sleep in his own bed tonight and will get a train to us tomorrow. I’m assured it’s a 2 minute detour, and whilst that’s obviously an understatement it’s not massively far out of the way, so it’s agreed to without much fuss. We drop him off, then proceed to glorious central London. The rest of the guys want to stay up and watch Metallica live shows and in true metal band fashion take up all the comfortable surfaces before I even step foot in the house without a second thought for the well being of the man behind the wheel of the 3.5 tonne deathtrap they’ll be in the back of, so I opt to sleep in the van. As is tradition.

4WD’s open up a whole new world of places to explore, and that’s one of the reasons they are so popular. However, before you head off and enjoy some of these brilliant spots you need to know how to safely, correctly and easily recover a bogged 4WD.

For those of you who’ve been doing this for many years, you’ll know there are a variety of ways to get a stuck 4WD moving again, and hopefully the risks associated with each method. In this post, we are going to cover everything you need to know when recovering a bogged 4WD.

It’s essential to know how to safely recover your vehicle.

4WD recoveries can be very high risk

Let’s start with the most important factor; safety. Yes, we live in a world where safety is continuously shoved in our faces, and it’s easy to be complacent and not heed the advice when you are out on your own time, having fun. However, I will make a statement here that will hopefully ensure you take the time to perform 4WD recoveries carefully, and safely.

Since 2003, at least 7 Australian’s have been killed in 4WD recoveries gone wrong. In several cases, it’s been innocent people who have stopped to offer assistance to someone they didn’t even know.

Please think about that for a minute. Recovering a bogged 4WD can result in some extreme forces, and if something breaks the results are catastrophic. No 4WD trip is worth your life.

The good news is with a basic understanding of the right techniques your chances of being injured or killed in a 4WD recovery are extremely low.

The right tyre pressures will ensure you don’t get bogged.

Why do you get bogged?

4WD’s get bogged for a number of reasons, but the most common one is incorrect tyre pressures. When you head off road, you should be reducing the amount of air in each tyre. This helps to cushion the ride, look after your 4WD and it increases flotation and traction.

Particularly on beaches, tyre pressures that are too high are a guaranteed recipe for a bogged 4WD. The other common reason 4WD’s get stuck is simply related to clearance – if you drive over something that is taller than the undercarriage of your 4WD, it’s going to grab and you won’t be going anywhere.

Understanding why the 4WD is stuck in the first place is the key to setting up the right 4WD recovery. If you don’t know why the 4WD is bogged in the first place, it’s hard to pick the right recovery technique.

If you are stuck, don’t make it harder

One of the worst things you can do if your 4WD comes to a grinding halt is to jump on the accelerator and hope to spin your way out. You can very slowly turn your wheels forward or reverse while turning the steering wheel back and forth, but spinning the wheels quickly makes your 4WD sink even further, and a simple recovery can turn into one that takes a long time!

How can you recover a bogged 4WD?

There are lots of methods for recovering a 4WD. One of the most commonly used methods is the snatch strap. These are useful tools if used properly, but they are also by far the riskiest method of 4WD recovery. They also shouldn’t be the first recovery option!

Other ways to recover a 4WD include using a winch, traction aids, reducing tyre pressures, digging around the vehicle, jacking the vehicle up and putting sticks or rocks under the wheels and getting a few people to assist pushing a 4WD (where safe to do so).

What’s the right order of recovering a bogged 4WD?

Once you understand the risks of 4WD recoveries, the order that you do each recovery in becomes fairly obvious. Start with recovery options that are safest, like reducing tyre pressures, using a shovel to clear the way and traction aids to drive out. If that doesn’t work, a winch is the next safest option, with a snatch strap being the least safe. In many cases, the fastest, easiest and safest way to recover a 4WD is using traction aids.

High force 4WD recoveries

There is a time and a place for high force recoveries, but it’s not every time. High force recoveries generally refer to the use of snatch straps, but it can include winching as well.

High force recoveries are dangerous.

Snatch straps

I mentioned above that the humble snatch strap is one of the most common ways to recover a 4WD. This is because they are cheap, lightweight, most people have them and they seem simple enough to use. A snatch strap is relatively simple in theory – it’s a special rated strap that when pulled stretches up to 30% in length.

This allows a recovery vehicle to get a bit of a run-up before the towing starts to take place. Instead of one harsh yank like chains or a normal tow rope would apply, a snatch strap stretches while building up energy and then releases it more gently.

Snatch straps should be used carefully.

However, when you are talking about recovering 4WD’s up to 3.5 tonnes in weight, the forces can be huge. If anything breaks during a snatch recovery, the object will flick through the air at speeds of up to 400km/h. A little piece of steel becomes a deadly object, as it has done several times in the past.

When using a snatch strap, make sure it is suited to the weight of your vehicle. You want a breaking strain of around 2 – 3 times the weight of the lightest vehicle in the recovery. They should also never be used in recoveries where a 4WD is very badly stuck. This mainly applies to mud, as the suction is too much to break in a quick pull; winching is a much better option.

Only use rated gear in good condition.

Imperative safety practices when winching or using a snatch strap

If you’re going with a high force 4WD recovery, there are a number of things you absolutely must do. The first is to ensure your tyre pressures are actually correct for the terrain you are driving on. Especially on beaches, you need to let a substantial amount of air out. The general rule of thumb is somewhere between 12 and 20 PSI, depending on the vehicle’s weight.

From there, you need to reduce the force required on the recovery. This means spending 5 minutes on a shovel digging around the tyres, and under the chassis if it’s belied out.

After that, you need to grab rated equipment, in good condition. This means it has a tag, or stamp with a safe working load (SWL) or MBS (Minimum breaking strength). Never, ever attach a snatch strap or winch to a point on a vehicle that is not stamped and rated. Everything from the recovery point, to the shackles used, to the strap or cable need to be rated, and in good working order.

The next step is to use recovery dampeners over the snatch strap or winch cable. These are dampeners that sit over the strap (preferably in two places!) and are filled with sand. If something does break, they stop the strap or cable from flicking through the air at huge speeds.

When you are ready for the recovery, everyone except the two drivers needs to be at least 1.5 times the length of the strap/cable away from both vehicles, in case something breaks. Communicate between the two drivers and proceed with the recovery. If using a snatch strap, use the right gears (normally 2nd low for the vehicle recovering, and 1st low for the one being recovered) and start with a gentle pull first.

Pay careful attention to the amount of effort you are having to apply to get the vehicle moving; if it’s significant you may need to come up with a new recovery method.

Never recover from a tow ball.

Never use a tow ball for a 4WD recovery

Tow balls are designed for towing, not for being shock loaded in a 4WD recovery. They have a nasty habit of shearing off, and a shiny ball of steel is a very, very scary object to have hurling through the air.

Work as a team to set up a 4WD recovery.

Other things to know about 4WD recoveries

4WD recoveries can be high-stress situations. The reality is, unless you have the tide rolling in on your 4WD there’s no need to move quickly. Don’t rush around, as mistakes are commonly made. Work as a team; talk to each other, and make sure you are all on the same page with what is going on.

Don’t add any further objects into a 4WD recovery than needed. Snatch straps should never be joined together with shackles, and if you can get away without having a shackle in the recovery, do so. If something does break, it means there are fewer missiles involved that could hurt or kill someone.

Lastly, a quality 4WD course is worth its weight in gold. You will be physically shown how to drive a 4WD, what to do when you get stuck, how to recover a 4WD safely and you’ll go home with the right techniques.

Prevention is better than cure.

Avoid getting bogged in the first place

For those who have been driving 4WD’s for a long time, you’ll know that prevention is better than cure. Adjust your tyre pressures, drive where your vehicle is suited for any avoid getting bogged in the first place. It might be a bit of fun the first few times, but after that, it gets old really quickly.

There’s nothing new, or wrong with getting bogged in a 4WD. It happens hundreds of times every week. However, please take the time to recover 4WD’s safely; we’ve had enough accidents and deaths already.

Air pollution: How does London's new emissions zone compare?

London’s tough new Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) is the latest – and one of the strongest – steps yet taken to limit emissions of pollutants from cars, vans and trucks. So how does it compare with other cities in Europe and the rest of the world?

CAZ? LEZ? ULEZ? What do they all mean?

These are all different ways of describing geographical areas of cities or towns that have placed restrictions on the use of vehicles, with the goal of tackling air pollution. A CAZ is a clean air zone, a LEZ is a low-emissions zone. Now we have London with the world’s first ULEZ, or ultra-low emissions zone.

In the UK, CAZs are areas that can decide to use charging as a means of cleaning the air, but don’t have to. If they do impose some form of charging for the most polluting vehicles, they are called a LEZ.

Across Europe there is less clarity about definitions, and LEZ is the term widely used to describe around 250 areas in different cities, with considerable variation.

“Not all LEZs have been created equal,” said Yoann Le Petit from the research group Transport & Environment.

“In Brussels, in terms of coverage, it’s quite a large LEZ, but in terms of ambition level, it’s very low. It started last year, banning Euro 1 cars (registered before 1992). These are very old vehicles; you hardly see them on the street.

“You also have a very high ambition LEZ in Madrid and the one just introduced in Stuttgart, but there is no agreed definition of what an LEZ is.”

Who’s got the most restricted areas?

Across Europe, Italy has the most low-emissions zones – some of them permanent, many of them seasonal. There are also around 80 in Germany, 14 each in the Netherlands and the UK. France has also 14 LEZs, but most of these are emergency schemes that are enforced on a daily basis when there are pollution peaks.

What’s happening in the rest of the world?

There are initiatives under way across all continents. Some are more successful than others.

Tokyo was one of the first cities to ban diesel vehicles, starting back in 2000.

Seoul in South Korea only introduced measures in 2017 to ban diesel cars that failed to meet emissions standards.

Bogota in Columbia has been working since 1974 to get cars off the streets. Every Sunday sees large numbers of roads closed until 2pm. They have also attempted to restrict cars based on number plates with less success.

Mexico city has also developed restrictions based on number plates and by banning cars on Saturdays. However, a study from 2017 says that it hasn’t worked as well as hoped because people car-pooled, used taxis or bought extra vehicles.

In the US, San Francisco has plans to ban cars on Market Street; and Los Angeles, Denver and Charlotte are thinking about how to reduce emissions in the future. But no American city has yet banned diesel cars in any form.

Surprising lessons from the world’s oldest LEZ?

One of the most curious things to come out of the introduction of a LEZ in Sweden in 1996 was the demand from trucking companies to make them bigger.

“Before the introduction, some hauliers were really angry about it,” said Anders Roth, formerly the civil servant in charge of the Gothenburg LEZ.

“Then they realised it wasn’t that bad and the big hauliers who invested in new vehicles realised they could make more money from having a good environmental profile, and they wanted the zone made bigger.”

The world’s first LEZs for vehicles were introduced in Gothenburg, Stockholm, Malmo and Lund in Sweden back in the mid 1990s. The restrictions put in place were targeted at the most polluting diesel trucks and buses in the city centre. Essentially, any vehicle over 3.5 tonnes.

Private cars were not included; they’re still not banned.

“The next step would be to include cars, but that’s a more controversial question in Sweden. We already have congestion charging in Gothenburg and Stockholm, but politicians are reluctant to enforce more regulations,” said Mr Roth.

He believes that because the Swedish cities started earlier, they have had to place fewer restrictions on vehicles to achieve cleaner air.

“We started early and people got used to it and now it’s normal – people would think it would be silly to take it away.”

He’s a supporter of the London ULEZ.

“I think that’s the best way to go. You don’t have to ban vehicles totally if they are not really bad; you can have the same effect but without the same high cost for society.”

Do these restrictions make a big difference?

Undoubtedly all the zones are having an impact – but the scale of the difference varies, depending on the type of pollutant. They’ve worked well with diesel particulates which the World Health Organization has linked to cancer.

“They have made a huge difference with all forms of particulate matter,” said Lucy Sadler, who previously led the London Mayor’s air quality team and now runs a website that collects information on how cities are tackling air pollution.

“Nitrous oxides (NOx) are harder, no thanks to vehicle manufacturers.”

“If you look at Milan, which has a low-emissions zone and a congestion charge combined, they’ve reduced NOx by 10%, they reckon. That’s huge in a city because there’s not that many things you can affect.

“A low-emissions zone won’t be a single magic wand, but it can usually be the biggest single measure.”

Is London’s new zone really the “toughest” in the world?

It’s very hard to say definitively as different cities have different levels of restriction. Certainly, it is one of the most ambitious among the world’s largest cities. But some critics say that it could be tougher by banning polluting vehicles instead of just charging them.

Some experts believe this is down to the level of authority in the Mayor’s hands.

“In London they have the power to charge for it; others have the right to ban,” said Kate Laing from C40 Cities, a group of major world cities committed to tackling climate change.

“But if you are willing to drive and pay the charge three days a week instead of five days a week – that is still making gains in air quality.”

Apart from London, two cities in Europe are said by observers to be the most restrictive.

In Madrid, there is a zero-emissions zone since last November, about the same size as the new London ULEZ.

To drive into the Madrid zone, you have to have authorisation and that is only given to zero-emissions vehicles such as electric cars. However, residents are given an exemption that they can continue to use their existing cars until they get a new one.

It is more relaxed for residents, say experts, because it was introduced with much less lead time than London,

“Madrid is a small zone but it is very ambitious,” said Yoann Le Petit. “They could already see a NO2 reduction of around 40%. Even outside the LEZ, they saw a slight decrease in traffic, as people know they won’t be able to go through the city centre. They even saw a slight increase in business in the zone.”

Oslo also has very ambitious plans. The city has already removed 700 car parking spaces to create bike lanes and small parks. It also has a zero emissions zone in the centre of the city.

Do local governments make money from these schemes?

According to experts, low-emissions zones don’t make money.

“The more you enforce, the more expensive it gets,” said Lucy Sadler.

“If you fine someone £40, it won’t cover the cost to enforce it. They don’t make money. It’s a myth that some organisations like to promote, but it’s absolutely not based on fact.

“Combined congestion charging is different. Across Europe, London is best-practice as the money raised is spent on local public transport. In other countries, it’s not the case.”

Where do we go from ULEZ?

To zero, most likely. The direction of travel is to increase the size of low-emissions zones, and then, over time, to go to zero emissions. This means that only electric cars, or vehicles powered by battery or hydrogen, for example, would be allowed in.

“Zero is a big step from low. It will require serious investment in electric vehicles and hydrogen, and shifts towards more walking, cycling and public transport,” said Kate Laing from C40 Cities.

“In London, the Mayor’s transport strategy is to try to achieve 80% of trips across London in walking, cycling and mass transport by 2040; the ULEZ is feeding into a long-term vision of the city by 2040.”

This thrust is not just because of air quality; it’s also down to climate change. Emissions from transport are proving very tough to curb, and will require continued restrictions on internal combustion engines.

“Increasing numbers of cities are saying zero-emissions zones,” said Lucy Sadler.

“In terms of where we are going – this is the final destination,” said Yoann Le Petit.

What is plastic?

Plastic is a type of synthetic or man-made polymer; similar in many ways to natural resins found in trees and other plants.

The history of plastic goes as far back more than 100 years; however, when compared to other materials, plastics are relatively modern and new. Over the century, the usage of plastic has enabled society to make huge technological advances. Although plastics are thought of as a modern invention, there have always been “natural polymers” such as amber, tortoise shells and animal horns. These materials behaved like today’s manufactured plastics and were often used similarly to the way plastics are currently applied.

Plastic has been of use for daily tasks to our most unusual needs, and have increasingly provided the performance characteristics that fulfil consumer needs at all levels.

In the present time, plastic is everywhere around us. Plastic has existed for the last 60 to 70 years; however, it has transformed everything from packaging to product design and retailing. The downside of it is that plastics are designed to last and nearly all plastic that has been created exists in some form even today. Plastic could end up in the ocean, and it could take hundreds of years to break it down, if at all.

Coffee cups are not recyclable due to the plastic membrane that lines them and can take up to 30 years to degrade.

When one of these things in up in the ocean, they can be devastating to our marine wildlife who get entangled.

Plastic bottles

The energy required to produce and transport plastic water bottles could fuel an estimated 1.5 million cars for a year, yet approximately 75% of water bottles are not recycled – they end up in landfills, litter roadsides, and pollute waterways and oceans.

Plastic cups

The chemical bonds of plastic cups make them durable, but also resistant to breaking down. Moreover, they can also release toxic chemicals over time into the environment and are more likely to be ingested by vulnerable marine wildlife.

Disposable diapers

Disposable diapers need to be exposed to oxygen and sunlight in order to decompose, and they don’t decompose well in a landfill. Once in a landfill, they can contaminate groundwater, posing serious threats to the environment.

Coffee Pods

These coffee pods can take up to 500 years to break down because of the plastic that’s inside them, and it is releasing harmful amounts of methane gas as it is breaking down.

Plastic toothbrush

3.5 billion toothbrushes are sold worldwide each year. Most get lost in the recycling process and end up in a landfill or make their way into rivers and oceans. These toothbrushes are made from polypropylene plastic and nylon and can take up to 500 years or more to decompose.

How does plastic get into the ocean?

There are more than eight million tonnes of plastics that enter the world’s oceans every year, and here are some common ways:

Through rivers

According to the scientific research that I have found on the internet, it suggests that as much as 90% of marine plastic debris enter our ocean through 10 of the world’s rivers.

This doesn’t involve plastics being dumped directly into rivers, although this does happen. However, due to its lightweight nature, it’s easy for plastics en route to landfill to escape containment. This can then enter waterways and eventually, our oceans.

From boats

An estimated 20% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch trash comes from ships and offshore oil rigs. This can happen from the people cutting loose their nets on a fishing trip to large cargo ships losing of dumping significant quantities of waste.

From factories

There isn’t enough care when factories producing, transporting or disposing of plastics, and therefore, this contributes significantly to the amount of marine debris.

Down the drain

To put simply, the journey of plastics to the ocean can all start in our bathroom. A high profile example involves the recent banning of microbeads by several countries. These tiny plastic balls are found in common items such as exfoliants, shower gels and glitter-based makeup. However, microbeads aren’t the only culprits. Cotton buds, sanitary products and face wipes often contain plastic, and some will escape cleansing operation at wastewater plants and make it to the ocean.

What happens to the plastic at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?

There are two properties of plastic that make it such a visible problem in our ocean:

It’s light - many plastic objects won’t sink.

It’s durable - because plastic is relatively new, we don’t know how long it takes to break down.

The majority of the plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch will simply float there. They will gradually be worn down by the waves and sunlight. However, even when this happens, the plastic doesn’t simply disappear entirely. Instead, it becomes microplastics. According to scientific results, it is believed that estimated of microplastics makeup 94% of the object count at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

What are the dangers of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?

The obvious answer that we know is that plastic pollution is killing marine life. An estimate of 1 million seabirds and 100,000 wildlife mammals are affected every year, as well as many other species. For example, sea turtles often mistake plastic bags for prey such as jellyfish. Furthermore, abandoned fishing lines, fishing nets and equipment can ensnare and drown dolphins, porpoises and whales.

This is obviously the bigger problems we are seeing, and how can people expect there would be no danger to the wildlife when humans aren’t free from the potentials dangers of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Microplastics have been found in the stomachs of nearly half of the most important species for global fisheries, and this could simply mean that we could be eating our own trash. If these plastics make their way up the food chain and into our bodies, there are concerns over potential health implications.

How many birds die from plastic pollution?

A lot of the data regarding birds and plastics comes from studies of seabirds, as the presence of plastic in the ocean has garnered a lot of media attention. The number of seabirds dying as a result of plastic is currently estimated at 1 million a year. This shocking statistic becomes even more worrying when we consider just how quickly this problem has grown. In 1960, fewer than 5% of seabirds were found to have plastic in their stomachs, but this number had rocketed to 80% in 1980. Based on this research, and modern studies, it’s expected that by 2050, 99% of all sea bird species will be ingesting plastic.

Why do birds eat plastic?

It looks like food - small particles of plastic floating in the ocean can be easily mistaken for prey.

It smells like food - studies show that the smell of krill feeding on the algae that coat marine plastic debris is similar to natural scents that many seabirds follow when hunting for food.

It floats - plastic’s lightweight��nature is also a huge part of the problem. Albatross species, in particular, feed by skimming low over the water and inadvertently consume plastic as a result.

What happens to birds that consume plastic?

The impacts of plastic consumption for birds depend on what they eat. Some birds die quickly as a result of sharp plastics puncturing their internal organs, but others may starve to death as they feel full from eating plastic but receive no nutritional benefits.

This could also be a huge problem as due to the amount they’re eating, birds are at risk of toxic effects of the chemicals that coat plastics. Moreover, adults birds that leave nests to hunt often return with plastic they have mistaken for food and feed it to their chicks.

What happens to birds that become entangled in plastic?

This really depends on where and how the birds become entangled.

Drowning in nets - for gannets, penguins and other birds that dive for their food, becoming caught in underwater plastic will mean they can’t get back to the surface, and so they drown.

Risk of infection - if the plastic is tightly wrapped it can cut the bird, leading to infection.

Inability to move - entanglement can mean that birds are unable to escape natural predators, or find food themselves.

How does plastic affect marine life?

Around 100,000 marine mammals die every year as a result of plastic pollution. This can include whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals and sea lions.

Why do they eat plastic?

A plastic bag ballooned with water can look a lot like squid, or other prey, to the seals and marine mammals that hunt them. However, even species that don’t identify them by sight aren’t completely safe. For example, toothed whales, and many species of dolphins use sophisticated sonar-type techniques called echolocation to find their prey. According to research, it is believed that unnatural objects such as plastic waste can confuse this sonar, and are incorrectly interpreted as food.

Single-use plastics or often referred to as disposable plastics are commonly used for plastic packaging and this can include items such as grocery bags, food packaging, bottles, straws, containers, cups, and cutlery where they are intended to be used only once before they are thrown away or recycled.

How long does a plastic product take to biodegrade?

Plastic is still relatively new compared to other materials and although plastic has revolutionized how we store our food and packaging - the downside of it is plastic items can take up to 1000 years to decompose in a landfill. But plastic bags we use in our everyday life take 20 years to decompose, while plastic bottles can take up to 450 years.

Which countries have the highest/lowest rate of plastic pollution?

According to what I have found on the internet, a team of researchers in the United States and Australia led by Jenna Jambeck analyzed plastic waste levels in the world’s oceans.

In 2010, 8.8 million metric tons of plastic waste came from China with an estimated 5.53 million tons of it ending up in the ocean. The United States is also polluting the oceans with plastics; however, at a much lower rate than China.

How has it affected the environment?

The world is currently producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic each year - a significant amount of which could end up in our ocean.

Not only is plastic harmful to the environment and oceans, but it is harmful to wildlife as well. According to the Ocean Conservancy, plastic has been found in more than 60 per cent of all seabirds and 100 per cent of sea turtle species.

What is being done to tackle plastic use?

To tackle plastic being used, many countries such as Canada, Costa Rica, Great Britain, Greece and many more have ban plastic straws. Moreover, many businesses such as Alaska Airline will be removing all non-recyclable plastic stir straws and citrus picks and replacing them with sustainable, marine-friendly alternatives on all domestic and international flights. Plastic bags have also been ban in many countries such as Australia, Boston, Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, and many more.

What are the creative responses to plastic use?

There have been some very creative responses in using plastic and turning it into something creative. For example, washed ashore rallies volunteers to clean beaches are using collected debris to create larger-than-life sculptures of the marine life affected by ocean trash and teaching students about the impacts of marine debris through art.

Another creative process is transforming lost fishing nets into energy. The Fishing for Energy partnership helps fishermen properly dispose of old and abandoned fishing nets and other gear - much of it plastic - at no cost to the fishermen. In addition to donating their own worn-out nets, some fishermen also directly retrieve lost fishing gear out of the ocean. After being collected and sorted, any metal parts are recycled, and everything else is converted into electricity, with roughly one ton of old nets producing enough electricity to power a house for 25 days.

What are the long-term consequences of plastic use?

The plastic that pollutes our ocean and waterways have severe impacts on our environment and our economy. For example, seabirds, whales, sea turtles and other marine life are eating plastic pollution and dying from choking, intestinal blockage and starvation.

Now Bangalore is 78% concrete and if this trend continues those numbers could go up to 98.5% by 2025. And with more concrete, there is less vegetation, recreational spaces, and trees. For 9.5 billion people that live in Bangalore there are only 1.5 billion trees. There isn’t enough air for everyone!

When speaking with Dr. Ramachandra he explained the concept of an oxygen cylinder and how people are paying about 300 rupees for two days worth of oxygen. AN OXYGEN CYLINDER! People are BUYING oxygen! This is how bad it’s gotten.

There are a few players that you need to know about: the political leaders, corporators, the garbage contractors, and the Pourakarmikas that collect waste for the BBMP. This nexus is the root of the problem. Many contractors have to pay almost half their salaries to the corporators as illegal commission to allow them to operate in the area. This money feeds to the political leaders who want their share. I led a group of 10 volunteers around the Koramangala area to go door-to-door educating people and collecting any E-waste people had in their homes. In the training guide I remember one of the first points being that people should not trust Kabadiwallahs (local aggregators) to collect their E-waste. There’s honestly so much going on that it’s difficult to know who to trust with your waste and who will ensure it gets properly managed. In my time volunteering I went into hair salons, shops, apartment complexes and spoke with people who didn’t really know what E-waste was or why they couldn’t trust local garbage collectors to dispose of it responsibly. They were interested in learning more about the management system and what they could do to help.
