This is very accurate! I wonder about the somnophilia part though: Andrea Black in the brief intervew recalls waking up to JT near her. We see the polaroids JT displays in front of him (can't get rid of souvenirs!): each one of them taken when they were asleep, good-looking, at first glance young. We also see the way he entered Karen's room and got rid of clothes in absolute silence, could he have done the same before? Were the pictures the final step of the stalking ritual before assaulting them? To my knowledge there are few ways to render a person unconscious: alcohol (discarded), pills (maybe), trauma (he's quite rude with Emma/Karen during their meeting) and asphyxiation. I'm advocating for the last two, giving how physical he got the three times we see him interacting with a woman who pics his interest (not Grandma Moses, sure, but the hint of pure rage when he says "don't call me that" is tangible). With both Mary and the unnamed prostitute in the motel he pin them down quite easily. Hands on face and neck. It should be easy for him to squeeze a little longer and have them faint. Only then he allows himself to look for an embrace, an intimacy that has its roots in an Oedipaledipal complex and and arrested emotional development.
This is part of the transcript of ep.5 (I'm crazy I know)
"My mom worked in cosmetics...You're no-nonsense, like my mom. You have that same expression, sense of style. She was an amazing shopping companion. But she was kinder. And she used to look at me just that way. I loved getting caught in her stare." But Mary's look is bewildered and disapproving, so what kind of wild idolisation had young JT for the departed mother? What kindness is he referring to? What if his mother was the one who recognised his instincts first and tried to punish him for that? 🤷🏻‍♀️
His "type" seems to be aesthetically pleasing women - the cleavage girl at the mall, Andrea Black, the pictures he briefly shows... I'm starting to think there is a desire of total possession carved in the hole of his absent mother, together with a childlike push for grabbing what he wants and blaming the victim for the consequences of their "rudeness".
With Emma/Karen, he restrained her before playing groom and eventually punishing her for lying to him. Finally, he was condemned for two assaults, but Andrea Black was not one of them. He used a fake name at the job so they never caught him. But she saw him and could recognising him again.
Ok I'm rambling too much. I don't know have an answer. I think I'll try to find the scripts, maybe they'll give some more hints
we get absolutely no backstory on john tyler aside from the fact that he has some flavor of oedipus complex (“i loved getting caught in her stare”) and his mom died when he was 9, so time to create the most fucked up and tragic story i can think of to explain him being Like That
