#but iditarod's greatest scrutiny is of dog care

ngl i am side eyeing iditarod officials a bit for them penalizing dallas seavey for not "properly gutting" the moose the he shot to protect his team. the rule about gutting downed animals does not define what "properly gutted" means. He gutted the moose and i myself would have also eschewed "properly" gutting a dead animal to ensure my dogs were okay (especially relevant knowing Faloo was critically injured, but is now home safe).
i understand the spirit of the gutting rule (saving meat for surrounding communities and in general low/no waste of resources), but it needs to be weighed against providing dog care which imo of this situation should absolutely take precedence.
#iditarod#sorry like....iditarod as an organization has a lot of eyes on them i know this intimately#but it's weird to penalize for having your dogs take precedence imo#like dallas did run further up the trail after gutting the moose and camped for a bit before proceeding to the checkpoint#likely to check each of his dogs in detail to assess potential injury#and to reset and water them to make it safely to the checkpoint after such an encounter#at least he's first into cripple but also allegedly ran 420 miles straight without rest himself? bruh#it just blows my mind that with all the criticisms from outside sources#that iditarod will penalize for this and say for the mushers that one year recently that sheltered their dogs against a storm#like i understand the 'why' of the rules'#but iditarod's greatest scrutiny is of dog care#so why make mushers providing proper care to dogs take penalties#make it make sense
