i have been having a dilemma whenever i describe xie lian in my fanfic (cough shameless self promotion cough) where i swear to god i remember xie lian having black hair in the book, and i always swear he looks like he has black hair in most of the covers and he has black hair in the manhua but 50% of the fanart gives him brown hair, and the donghua gives him brown hair, so i've felt like i've been gaslit or somethin n have been second-guessing myself

but i stumbled across it when looking for something else

CONFIRMATION that he's got black hair in the book. fairly certain it's mentioned elsewhere as well but i just happened to stumble across this just now and went 'AHA'

#i mean i guess you can interpret it as black bc it's wet..#but i'm p sure he's just got black hair other than in the donghua #tgcf #so it's like e'ming's eye #it's described in the book that the entire eye is red - pupil and all #but most of the time you see him even in the book art he's got a black pupil #or i guess the shackles. the shackles are described in the book as proper shackles that you can touch/feel through clothing #not a tattoo like they're shown in the art #tho i guess this shit shouldnt matter to me as much as it does since i ignore the art for other stuff..#i prefer hua cheng's tattoo being on the inside of his wrist instead of the outside like in all the art #it feels more normal to imagine your arm palm-up and scribbling on your wrist #versus palm-down. so it makes more sense his tattoo would be on the inside #and also it feels like hc would do something so stupid and dangerous and painful as a child #that'd probably be like the most dangerous place to stick and poke
