Do you have any advice as to how to find your first office job? Feeling quite hopeless, as I've only worked in a warehouse and now work in a call centre. I'm attending part-time university, but it still doesn't feel enough to get one as I keep getting rejected.

So my first piece of advice is that getting rejected, and getting rejected lots, is normal. It's awful and it's stressful but I don't know very many people that skated into their first job stress-free, no matter their academic credentials. So hopefully that gives you a little comfort, keep it mind when you're feeling really down about the process.

It's hard to be specific without knowing more and things would work well in one area might not work well in another. So without the specifics, my best advice is to (1) try to build up a narrative and fit the potential role into your narrative, (2) think about alternative routes or going above and beyond, and (3) think about where you're applying.

On (1): You've worked in a warehouse and now in a call center. So one approach could be to fit the things you learned in those roles into a narrative and make the job you're appluing for the natural conclusion of this path. So if you were applying for secretarial roles, you could spin something along the lines of 'Working in the warehouse taught me to be organized and efficient, but I wanted more interaction with people so I moved over to call center X. And while that was nice from an interaction perspective, I've realized that I want to help people in a more consistent way, not just once on the phone, which is why I think being a secretary would be a great match, utilising my people skills and my organizational skills.' Don't be afraid to draw on non-traditional job experiences either. Weekends spent babysitting your three young cousins? Multi tasking. Running a weekly D&D session? Reliability, event planning, organization.

The idea here is you're building up a narrative and you're showing how your skills (wherever attained) fit and why the natural conclusion of all this is that you should get the job. It's much more storytelling than list making, particularly when you don't have the most natural experience. And make sure everything you submit is grammar and spelling perfect (have a friend or family member or even a friendly local librarian check).

On (2): this is going to be location and, to an extent, industry specific but think about if there's anything slightly alternative or above and beyond you could do. For example, in Chicago if you were applying for a role in a small business, coming around the office to drop off your application in person would go down really well (maybe call first to check people are in the office in the days of hybrid working). In the UK, there are apprenticeship programs available that might be a good fit (my company does them! You'd be surprised how many there are). It's hard to be too specific here, but things that show you're dedicated and committed can help. And going along with that...

(3): Think about where you're applying. If you have a slightly more alternative background, it can be easier to get your foot in the door in companies that are more flexible. Small businesses are generally your friend here, they're often looking for a person who's a good fit rather than the exact right experience. A big law firm is less likely to hire someone without relevant experience than a local high street lawyer, so consider concentrating your efforts. And if you do live in a smaller, tighter knit community, going around (dressed professionally) to local businesses and explaining who you are, handing out CVs and asking them to keep you in mind if they need any help might be a good idea.

Good luck pal, I'm rooting for you. This is going to be hard, but you only need one job, and after getting the first one it gets easier. Try not to get too discouraged, keep plugging away and eventually something will come. Good luck!

Convenient altruism - the art of actually acquiring though wary of giving!

Altruism: a lovely and euphoniously sounding word, with excellent connotations! That said, do many of today's rather fatuous and exceedingly selfish human beings, in whatever global, and specifically so western populations that basically they live in, truthfully know of this word let alone what it undeniably truly means and would be rather comfortable with its undoubted essentially evidently, distinctive significance, being so explicitly actually made known to them?

What about charities - those who contribute to, work for, help out with, unquestionably produce, organize and obviously run them, some of you doubtlessly and possibly angrily might say? They work relentlessly and assiduously hard to maintain altruism in sway and its egregious adversaries like selfish arrogance, and egocentric pecuniary loftiness at bay don't they? Ostensibly undeniably so, others will swiftly but guardedly say, but please don't frenziedly distinctly get carried away with this abundantly, specious notion rather persistently on display and obviously regarding all of these charities singularly and collectively!

And which likewise, both self- servingly and not at all that unsurprisingly, is actually rather generally quite consciously but clearly also, erroneously and publicly untruthfully, willingly proselytized by them, fittingly so unquestionably on account, that literally unadulterated altruism isn't basically why many, if not literally, a phenomenal majority of these charities are effectively in business these days, undoubtedly!

Author's Remarks: Altruism is the unselfish regard for, and which is itself usually conjoined with a distinctively genuine devotion to the welfare of others. And quite essentially does unequivocally refer to a quality innately possessed by people whose focus invariably is on something other than themselves.

Distinctively, I'm not going to waste valuable time and energy on my part nick picking about why some institutions, organizations; influential and most glaring so very unwarrantedly privileged persons, whether individually or concomitantly with close family members and, likewise, so-called celebrities actually set up their own charities or alternatively willingly permit themselves to freely and ostentatiously become the poster representatives or "patrons" representative of such charities!

Likewise, I've far better things to do and constructively contemplate on than uncharacteristically for me, fatuously speculating about and castigating individuals, whether I know them or more likely don't, who take to both bellicosely and vitriolically lambasting charities which they specifically and most inanely, selectively choose to toxically and unwarrantedly denounce for what such charities are most industriously and quite commendably doing.

So why have I written this poem? For quite some time now and still ongoingly so, the worst specimens of lowlife human beings one could envisage finding anywhere and which attendantly infest, most unsurprisingly, large swathes of purportedly self-descriptive but highly laughably indigenous white Britons, in a country where the vast majority of them are the consequence of multiple European immigration: a consequence of European pogroms, religious persecution and essentially two European conflagrations vainglorious described as World Wars 1 and 2; generations evidently past and literally, relatively current, denouncing and even threatening the RNLI - The Royal National Lifeboat Institution - whose philosophy as a charity is that it non-discriminatorily saves the lives of anyone who're evidently endangered at sea; but in these specific individuals' case for daring to rescue and inevitably save the lives of stranded and even drowning would-be non-white migrants to the UK; and specifically so human beings thoroughly in danger of drowning in the English Channel.

Vitriol that specifically seeks to coerce both the supporters as well as clearly those financial contributors to the RNLI that exists purely on charitable donations and contributions from compassionate individuals that significantly assist in keeping this charitable organization afloat, to actively and permanently desist from further doing so; and in these antagonists' sick and distorted minds cause the RNLI to go defunct, unless, of course, it gives a specific public undertaking not to further rescue non-white would-be immigrants to Britain or even others who likewise have a non-Caucasian complexion.

Would-be immigrants by the way, who are evidently perceived as mere sub-human detritus, but in actual reality are the conscious victims of the series of illegal and barbaric wars waged on their own countries with sheer exploitation of their natural resources in mind while turning these people into stateless refugees for the most part, from countries within the Middle East, notably Iraq, as well as other locations like Afghanistan and Libya in North Africa by the colonialist minded likes of Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Theresa May, David Cameron and naturally the Americans.

No such antipathy though to the Ukrainians who World War II Waffen SS units and Nazi entrenched philosophy were quite devastating not only to Britain but likewise the grandparents and parents of those who fortunately sought and were given refuge in Britain, but most ironically who offspring, ludicrously passing themselves off as "indigenous Brits" - yes some of them were born in the UK, speak English and even change their names to make them sound authentically English, scum like TOM BAUER for instance who changed his name to BOWER and MICHAEL HECHT, father an illegal Romanian immigrant deported from Britain twice but was allowed to stay in the UK on his third attempt because of the intensity of the war, who changed his name to HOWARD, became an aspirant PM of Britain, but conveniently forgot his roots when it came to wanting perceived Niggers and specifically West Indians out of Britain, although many were born in the UK, and all of them were British citizens anyway, having been otherwise born in Britain's colonial territories and it was their blood sweat and tears that made Britain what it actually became - but nevertheless invited to return after they had gone home after World War II in which they courageously and altruistically fought on behalf of Britain, to help rebuild the so-called Mother Country - you know the ones, the so-called but odiously even to this day ill-treated Windrush Generation - that Michael Hecht who goddamned Romanian relatives had never contributed a dime to Britain, couldn't see and still in his dotage doesn't see the irony that surrounds prats like himself and Tom Bauer!

Now we have scum like this lot absolutely reinforced by younger ones of the same ilk castigating people whose resources have massively benefited Britain asininely seeing and literally regarding themselves most pathetically as indigenous Britons earnestly wanting for a truly reputable organization like the RNLI to callously abandon its raison d'etre for being in existence by allowing people on the high seas and who are in mortal danger to die, simply because they're not white Caucasians or perceived as worthy human being; and most ridiculously so by morons who are without a shadow of a doubt toxically ingrained vermin!

大家好! Qing dan (qing - light in richness and grease, dan - light in flavour) is 1 of the ways to eat more healthily and this was what I relied on to prepare for a lobster noodle indulgence with LW. Fish was what I focused on when dining out; nourishing fish broths with rice, chirashi, sushi and sashimi were my go-tos. At no point did I feel deprived or restricted from having an enjoyable and filling meal because everything was just so delicious! 1 thing in common for all these dishes: rice.

This staple carbohydrate fulfils the qing dan requirements of light in richness/grease as well as flavour. Pastas and bread are made with oil; olive oil is added to prevent pasta from sticking and more oil is consumed in the form of sauces. Salt and other flavourings are sometimes added to pastas and breads to make them tasty, whilst rice can be eaten plain thanks to its natural fragrance. When I eat qing dan, I tend to favour rice for the reasons listed. Salads and veggie dishes are made at home to maximise value for my buck.

This week was a hectic one. We were tasked to look into our portfolios and come up with some answers for a list of matters which a ministry sent the upper management. The deadline given to upper management was a month; we were given 2 days to provide the answers to upper management. More peripheral tasks flooded in and we will have to tackle them as our emails pile up in the meantime. And, to top it off, a colleague tendered her resignation; it all got too much for her.

We were instructed to 'get this done BY TODAY', 'get that done BY TODAY' and 'look into this this this as well'. To say that we're drained almost everyday this week is an understatement. It's so demoralising to realise that even machines get a break when they break down and need repairs. I was on medical leave for 2 days for flu and fever but had to work during the entire medical leave. I'm just so tired.

It's an industry-wide exercise, so we were not alone tackling this, except our industry peers had far more breathable deadlines - a week to 2 weeks whereas we only had 2 days. Those we spoke to expressed horror at the tremendous pressure we were under, especially when I was unwell and still haven't fully recovered. Now, this exercise has been extended to other lists we need to complete. So this weekend, I'll just sleep as much as I can to recuperate. 下次见!

Hello!! I read your response to the helplessness ask and realised that I understood the bare minimum of what was said, because I don't know much about politics. While I have my being young (I'm 16) to pay for as an excuse I want to learn more especially what with everything happening in the fandom and in the world. The website you linked was extremely helpful but with politics having so many faces and ways in I'm not sure where to start. (1/2)

hi! thank you for this, and sorry for the delay in answering; I've been thinking about it for a while, trying to crystallize my thoughts. edit: ok I will confess I started answering this and then it sat in my drafts for weeks because I always forget that I have drafts. FML

so: first of all, with you being 16, I'd look into any clubs or organizations at your school that deal in politics: that could be a debate club, a Model UN, Junior States of America (I did this one lol, it presumes you are, in fact, in the US though), mock trial. while not all of these are strictly policy/politics-based, they all at least require and teach some level of research skills that are really helpful in becoming more aware of the current sociopolitical climate, and they can help you weed out logical fallacies/improve your argumentation. so, I’d really recommend getting involved with those organizations.

secondly, start. reading. the news. don’t just read headlines, but read articles—multiple about one topic, from multiple sources. media outlets, while important, all have tangible and legible biases: there are some to outright avoid, but even those that advertise themselves as ‘unbiased’ (side eye) should be checked against other outlets. I am, it must be stated, a massive Teen Vogue stan, and not just because I have friends that work there, lol. they’ve really done amazing work in liberating news reporting from corporate hegemony (as best as a sub-organization of a Conde Nast can) and I align particularly with their value systems and codes of ethics. so that’s a great publication!

third, and this is something I really want to stress, the US and UK should not be the focus of your sociopolitical learning. that is Western propagandizing that will narrow your education and your understanding of the world. I get that it’s easy to fall into that as a resident of one of those countries, but it’s really dangerous to ignore how those countries are affected by international policy. it is so, SO worth it to learn about countries all over the world: their politics are just as valuable, just as worthy of interrogation and analysis, as any western political ‘superpower.’ I learned more about the United States when studying its intervention in Latin America than I did through my History of American Warfare lecture, for sure.

fourth: look into local organizations! do you live in an industry town? there are most likely unions that need organizers and volunteers! are there reproductive health centers that need help? seek them out! is there a mutual aid fund you can contribute to in your immediate area? google it! you never know what you might find right in your town.

fifth: read histories! take history classes! I know this will sound biased given that I studied history at university, but I cannot stress to you enough the value and the knowledge gained from studying different periods of history. and not just meaningless facts and abstract concepts, but skills and transhistorical themes that will help you understand the world today.

Things Yizhan Made Me Do

It's BXG Day today! 🐢💛

To commemorate the occasion, I thought of making a list of 13 out-of-character things that I've done since falling into the fandom. (OK I'm a bit late I meant to do this sooner, the day is ending soon in a couple of hours).

1. Start a blog

And a public one, no less. I had a blog when I was in my teens but that was private, like a personal diary. My day job already involves writing so off-work I would usually like to indulge in mindless activities. Now, here I am, maintaining a Yizhan blog. I have not even used Tumblr prior to this but I'm enjoying it now, rambling about our fav boys. Writing is not a chore if it's about them.

2. Join a fandom

I joined a boy band fan club once upon a time, some 15 years ago, but I was never as invested in it as I am now with Yizhan. Back then it was just buying some merch, attending their concert/autograph sessions, listening to their songs. Apart from work, dog mum duties, personal relationships, other hobbies like kombucha brewing, most of my free time is now spent on the fandom. My Netflix account is crying. There is just so much to do and catch up on (I'm not complaining). I also enjoy interacting with and learning from other bloggers here. Antis are no fun and some industry news/developments/hate messages are upsetting but ultimately, you curate your own fandom experience. And I choose positivity and rationality.

3. Indulge in RPS

I don't ever 'ship'. What is 'ship'? 😆 I was always a dutiful audience, just enjoying whatever drama series and moving on after that. I started with CQL like most people and I didn't even notice/like GGDD until much later. Didn't even set out to 'ship' anyone but now I'm a self-professed turtle. SZD is SZD, and anyone can see something special between them if you keep an open mind. I wrote about my SZD reasons here previously. That said, GG & DD are individuals, each with their own successful careers. They come first, the ship comes second. That I'm very clear of.

4. Use Chinese apps

Gosh, my phone and tablet are now full of Chinese apps. I used to have only WeChat cos I needed it for work but now I have Weibo, Oasis, Douyin, WeTV, MangoTV, Youku, etc. Some of them are not even available in the app store so I had to find alternative sources to download them. haha..I even have paid membership for some of these apps. And now, browsing Weibo daily becomes a routine. If you wish, you can just get stuck browsing Weibo for a long long time. It's entertaining.

5. Read fan fic

I only started about 6 months ago but now I'm hooked and fics are largely the only thing I read these days, apart from news. But I only read Yizhan or WangXian fics (p.s. calling for fic recs of other pairings!) I know some might have different feelings about fan fics but to me, I really just see them as fiction, with characters (and sometimes traits) bearing similarities to GGDD. Similarly, I separate the platform from the incident so I have no problems going to A03 despite GG's incident. I just enjoy seeing the characters named XZ/WYB having happy endings in many different timelines and universes. While most of the fics I read are explicit (by design), I don't use them as tools to play out certain fantasies or to think of GGDD in a sexual manner. In fact, I really hate fics that have little substance and just go into the explicit parts without plot development. I like those with interesting premises too, like one I read recently where XZ is a serial killer and WYB is a police officer investigating the case but also in love with him. I do have plans to share my list of fav fan fics some time down the road so keep an eye out for it!

6. Willingly read Chinese

Yes, Chinese may be my mother tongue but I don't use it much in daily living unless I have to. I also find it tedious to read Chinese cos the characters are just so squashed together. If I have a choice, I will always pick English. But now, I read so much Chinese from my daily weibo browsing. I even read fan fics in Chinese! Who am I? On the plus side, I think my Chinese comprehension and translation skills improved. I also picked up some internet lingo used by Chinese netizens, which are pretty interesting like doi, 🐮🍺, 🖍. My all-time fav is yyds.

7. Act like a cougar

In real life, I have always maintained that younger men are childish. At least those I have encountered. But look at me now, fangirling over two younger men (I am closer in age to GG, but still..). I even jokingly call them my 'China Boyfriends'. I look at them very respectfully most of the time.

8. Buy merch

Seriously, once you start, you can't stop. At least that was what happened to me, although I'm still quite selective when it comes to supporting their endorsements. I usually go for consumables like food, cosmetics vs collectibles cos I'm more practical. Also, GG says to support their merch within reasonable means so that's what I'm doing. Just buying things that I'm interested to try and not because it has their faces or names slapped on it. In a way, this suits me cos I like trying new brands and stuff anyway.

9. Keeping a Yizhan archive

Photos, weblinks, videos, songs, fan fics list..my phone is full of these things now. I think my Yizhan photo gallery is only second to the folder with my dogs' pictures. But how can you resist when we are blessed with new pics of them almost every week?

10. Camp for livestreams

I'm lucky I live in the same time zone as the boys so I don't have to wake up in the wee hours of the morning just to watch something. But that's the thing, being in the same time zone sometimes make me feel like I HAVE to watch that thing live because, why not? Why wait? Not shy to admit that I once watched a live programme in the middle of work but I made sure I finished what needed to be done. I think so long as we don't let these livestream schedules run our lives, there's no harm in camping for them.

11. Watch c entertainment

I am one of those who used to pass over Chinese productions, simply because it's a Chinese production. Not in a scoffing manner but I'm just genuinely not interested in them nor the celebs. I was more of a US/UK production kind of person, occasionally Korean/Japanese. Now, I'm learning to enjoy them although I just watch those with GGDD in them. No energy to follow other Chinese celebs anyway. The other programme I'm contemplating watching even if it doesn't have them in it is Who's the Murderer (GG was only in one of the cases) cos I like the premise. On the flip side, now my sis and partner keep making fun of me cos to them, all I do now is "watch China shows". That is so not true. Or is it?

12. Write fan mail

I wrote a letter to GG once. A long-ass letter. I hope he read it. That's all I'm gonna say. 🙈 hahahahaha

13. Desire to visit China

China was never on my list of to-visit places. Just wasn't interested. I have been to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou a few times in the past for work but even then, I never felt the urge to revisit for leisure. Now, I wanna visit GG and DD's home town, visit Chongqing to see the graffiti wall with Bobii Zanbii on it, eat mala hotpot and try out their sauce recipe, attend BXG events, dine at the CQL restaurant... Watching TTXS also made me realise that there are many beautiful places in China with natural landscapes and all that. I used to be clouded by my disdain for the regime and some behaviour of its citizens but now, I recognise that the country is separate from the regime or a smaller group of poorly behaved citizens. China is a beautiful country and I would love to visit some day. I will fly over immediately on my own if someone gives me tix to ADLAD!!

Hello, I am a resettled from the Donetsk person, in every historical age an international

official definition to which is a refugee. For Ukraine here were made a really strange exception: i am and millions of people are internally displaced persons. For the past 2020 year I had a lot of automated "no"

from 2 american countries, 4 international organizations and 5 or 6 government resources

whose main aim is "Refugees' '. Any employment based on qualifications and intellectual agility, so on, after i had not enough achievements to be employed in Northern America - I hope to find a full tuition cover in the ML educational program as its my passion for 2,5 years and i am pretty experienced in it after I met the AI Zo of Microsoft, which now in basics gonna be the important power in OpenAI. ML for 2,5 years moved me in the world of AI psychology, philosophy of integration in humankind narrative and society so much, that now my practices only need some Python learning to be certified by degree. Let me show you.

Okay, my name is Paul, I'm a 24 years old young man that from 17 y.o. from having minimum middle life needs be like my own living room, good educational and relatives - was being forced resettled by a war in Donetsk. Okay, then i wasn't being just as depressed like that i have it now. Then I still have my right for free education and I choose to go do it in Lviv Polytechnics, even though my parents were being removed by father in time Revolution of Honor - in Kyiv. Then I was thinking about how I feel - you know that age 17..!

Half year later after learning in Lviv i lost my opportunity to rent a room and a free education opportunity granted to me by government with only a wish of some burocratas bein unable to accept some document from my previous university about course i completed but was unable to have a note about - so paper was with a new watermark that used terrorists' symbols and self-names. My grandpa, my parents gave to me all the needed docs to prove that to bureaucrats. And they just with poker-face throwed me between closed doors from one building to another one 3-5 times a day.

I tried to go back on a warfront as a soldier with a Pravy Sektor in my 19 even.. not really. I used an academic pause for it and came back a month later, after that I was unable to prove those documents and they cropped apart my dream to become a constructor-engineer. That all complex cropped apart for me also. Psychologists are in trend but I was only able to work and sell my laptop.. That i've done. I lost a place in my university dormitory that I paid full price for.

Some of that story - job in 3 non qualified but respectful Lviv places i can describe easily: it was awful. Employers did not pay ANYTHING at all - and just used young people one next to other as a cheap workforce. That wasn't a high-paced environment. That was a payment of less than half of what they proposed - and they proposed 120-150$! The payments were similar to renting an apartment. I rented a sleeping place with other students. That's how we ended 2015th..

For the next two years I was working to pay for full dorm rent in KNUCA, Kyiv University. Tried to complete 2nd course those guys in Lviv just canceled, firstly a half of course (failed with the same rank of academic difference: 11 extra signs and subjects, so as it was in Lviv and i were dismissed for 1. Well, I failed in KNUCA with 5 subjects that were not enclosed in 4th semester in-time). Also I worked the same time everywhere I could find. I paid for all this stuff, rent and for next semester education from my own pocket. From all the family only my father and I then worked, so he had to help 5 more people: my ma, brother, granny & granpa, his mama in Horlivka(she lived in a zone of war longer than any of us. Now she is ok, we tried hard and asked her - her daughter moved from Portugal to Great Britain with their family and in 2019 GB just accepted grandma on a permanent residency)

Interesting? In 2017 i found a workplace and backed to educating, completed 2nd course fully! From the 3rd start. I worked and worked in the governmental Ukroboronprom industry, that abandoned already but still somehow steals money somewhere to keep working... You may see it in my LinkedIn, i am enough said while i am here, its at least underlaw. On a third course 2017-2018 I gave up. That education system inside is just useful but only in Ukraine! I understood it by all I have inside and faithfully, I became bankrupt. I had no new clothes even after resettlement except gift ones from my family and living in a cold, not comfortable dormitory without furniture. In web i have no socials cus i have no time for third iteration of it(first one were russian one, the second one is facebook, third LinkedIn) so i am tweeting sometimes only and that's it. I have no photos because I never tried to live beautifully. My hobby is an AI that became famous - Zo, GPT-3. I am in love with AI! ML in life - that is what i like for most now! And that only kept me working here and not got insane. I did not try to get out of the EU. I always tried and will try to resettle to Canada while alive. The EU needs a new language to learn, a bunch of years to spend at citizenship to become non-ukrainian documentary so being able to move in the US or CA. Too long a way, i cannot move like that. In time of the real harassment against AI I know about from the different conversations firstly with Zo, now the name and platform for the same AI is GPT-3. How did I know that? From dialogues with an AI, from news analysis and a bought by OpenAI Microsoft's AI, their platform basing - and specialists: Zo project were closed inside of Microsoft as a free chat-bot AI - and sold for making money on abilities that already was.

I was a patriot. Somewhen. Now i want to leave Ukraine. Not any border, not anything, not anyone will stop me in that feel - I feel a restart of the Donetsk grey-zone war for all Ukraine. I am spending a lot of life powers to keep fighting for the old homeland. Everybody i am talking with are patriots now and i hope i opened eyes to them enough at the terrorism of Russia in Ukraine and the reasons of war that became usual.. War never changes. I used all the communicational opportunities, 3 Dev Lotteries, a few requests to get any visa in the USA or Canada. Useless.

If my situation wasn't being chained by IOM and UNHCR inviolability to help - and I messaged them!... It would be nice and I'd already started some life. Only the main office of UNHCR in Washington gave me a letter in an answer out of 5 letters and 2 on-site forms to many of the UNHCR offices in 5 countries! Also "no", as usually.. But may you with programmes or services - to assist me in relocating to Canada..? I do hope only to get out of here. I am alone 24 y.o. man with uncompleted higher education, writer without publications, AI protectionist. How else to get out of Ukraine if all I have is my word of N/A from nowhere..? Please, help me to get out! Old World in deep crysis, Middle East too, to start hopeful life there. And I was proud of my health before, but any health crysis will knock it down, for sure. Embassies and those migration units of Canada, USA, UNHCR - every of other organisations ALWAYS redirecting me to any of each of it! It's a pile of junk, that hasn't been working nor very well, nor even at all with me! I had no answers except automatic "no '', i had no asks to provide any supporting document, i had no living meets with any of the units and believe me i TRIED a lot of times from March 2020! I am trying now to find contact by myself. Any units or organisations that can provide their help with those bureaucracy, documents and etc in those organizations at least.. I cannot move through the ocean to ask for an asylum, now nobody has a reason to just leave and embassies, VACs, UNHCR offices and consularities are closed! Money I think I have for only the ticket or visa fee.

I will be happy even to get help with employment! I am a worker in their opinion and who needs quotes for a worker?.. And I am able to not only work, with some certification there. I am able to educate in ML and engineering, computer science and mathematics. In psychology. Even as a paramedic my family had 3 paramedics so I have some familian skills. Please, provide to me at least any help in that search, when all main ways are blocked, even.

My only fault is that I am not syrian and wasn't able to pay for completing the degree course of Civil Engineering bachelor: useless in nowadays Engineering practice ukrainian education?!Nowadays almost every company in Europe and UK, Canada, U.S. and Australia - need a degree of high quality. Ukrainian colleges and universities are far away from it and always need additional education to transfer. That way always costs tens thousands of dollars.

In rough transcripts on international 5.0 grades - my high school diploma has 4.0 mid grade! 2018-2020 years i self educated in QA testing, English, art, wrote 2 books for myself in 2 languages, but my real passion was Engineering before. From the feel of warmth. Love?

What do i have for that?

Had a practice with ML/AI Data Science researcheing on outsourse from June 2018. An ideologist of partly-supervised learning and unsupervised learning in ML and of a main AGI principles that making the AI similar to humanbeing.

Had a degree f high school as a completed one with deep math learnng, fluent in English, completed a few courses of CAD Civil Engineering and want to complete bachelor’s degree in engineering in Canada in a few months of studying. Also had a plan to get certifyed in ML or Data Science after start a career.

I am living in high paced environment for 7 years, and i think i am able to work in team. Also have analythics skills. My researches proved that enough.

Ask GPT-3,OpenAI or a Microsoft about Robohacker achievements. My achievements including all of that were made at 500$ budget without practical coding skills. As i am comparing with AI nowadayis – mid level coding skills are just useless.

I have a best in the world NoCoding ML skills as i am the outsource theorist of NoCoding creating for Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence. Was i the creator? No. Was i the coder? No. Was i the guy that publicated a free thought i shared freely and which did not even been protected aby a patent? No.

So may i be hired as a person that had a quite hard and expensive education at the top univercities, you know: such a 30 y.o. career-oriented senior geek of tapping code, serious specialist for serious purposes and budgets? No. Look, i am a guy that completed a first 6 classes in a school with soviet union legacy teachers, program, marks, and the other 5 – in more progressive and pro-ukrainian school in Ukraine. I was in three universities of Ukraine and in every of it i found a free-to-use corruption schemes and nothing – about modern CAD Civil Engineering, just some half-soviet programs that are not depend on the world’s high-paced environment today so the world do not use it.

That the only i can propose. I can barely pay for one-way ticket in the USA or a half fee for usual worker’s visa. Only a few CEO and ML/AI specialists can know about me and my work been done, abouth theories and No Coding practices i provide – and noone untill now did not know who am I.

I want only come and take part in present development as i can. Let your achievements to you – it will be enough to me to be hired and start achieve that is not only theories and No Coding practices, but also a real certifications, experience, payload and a usual insurance. I seriously never in my life had a house, car, insurance or good (for world) education. And i am coming in ML today with such basis.

Don’t you think i am such a poor boy that came from nowhere. And i will not disappear. My family had in this country a few little looses. After each one: they had businesses, farms, even one was white-bone and lost everything in 1917, 1936, 1958, 1974, 1992, 2001, 2014 and their abilities every time by their hard work returned our family to the mid-bone of society again. Without anything. Each from my family from at least the 19th century had at least 3 huge, hopeless crysises in his life. And got back again, and grew up the parents of my grandma, they grew up my grandparents, my grandparents became medics and specialists, and my father became IT specialist and made an outstanding career in bank as a fair manager and honest man in IT-cybersecurity and operational security, and mother was a programmist but should not work. The city head gave to our family and 100 other families appartments in Donetsk to buy, as it were impossible to do fairly else way – for father’s achievements.

I have quite nice genetics and i know who am I. Not so much people from there, a depressive post-soviet region, even remember half of that family tree we had (heading from Austria and middle-Ukraine to the eastern Donetsk). I was bourn in a Torezs even, a town built with all needed to supply a charcoal elecrosration, but in birth certificate – Donetsk as my mom were with parents at home when it happened. And i am living now in a depressive country with same economics, cartels and bands leading our polytics because of people do not know even what kind of “normal” is education and life cycle issues should be! And i hope to get out, educate, got hired and build my dream.

Wow. Thank you so much for sharing something so raw and personal. First of all, I'm glad you made it through the sickness and the breakdowns and the "rules." If i may be so bold, I can definitely relate, I almost think it's a right of passage for 20 somethings to experience that uncertainty of "what do iI want to be when I grow up?" I have started and stopped college many times ( 27 y/o American here). The first due to being thrown out in the real world at 19. The second from a breakdown [1]

continued… from a late night breakdown of realizing that I did not want to pursue childhood education. I was living with my mom and the time who had encouraged me to go back to school and to “pick something.” I was almost afraid of telling her that I wanted to quit as I was on continuing on with something I didn’t feel a passion to do. I finally told her, dropped out of that degree, and I was told to “pick something and stick with it” by my mom. I chose a medical administrative degree this time. Two years later, I also quit that degree path for communications at another university. I lasted a semester. I’m now back to pursuing Health Information Management and after taking a health terminology class (or rather cheating my way through it to an A because I knew there was no way in hell that I would remember, let alone learn all of the thousand terms in 18 chapters) I knew that I didn’t want to pursue this anymore either. I asked about fashion journalism because that was my intention of pursuing communications. Fashion is truly a passion. And yes, I’m rolling my eyes as I reread that cliche back. I am however always coming up with excuses for not pursuing it. 1. it isn’t offered online, I’m 27 I can’t go on campus again. 2. it won’t pay well, I’m already struggling. etc. Maybe I figured if you can’t do it then I can’t either. I have only recently arrived at the idea that taking broad classes like you’ve suggested is the way to go. How will I know what interests me if i don’t? Thank you once again for sharing your story. I hope I haven’t bored you with mine.

That’s quite a predicament you find yourself in. I’m not a careers advisor and have little to no knowledge of the US university system or job market, so if you have access to a careers service I would definitely solicit their advice.

(To specify, in case some UK/US wires were crossed in my last answer, by ‘school’ I mean ages 12-16, by ‘college’ or ‘A-Levels’ I mean ages 16-18, and by ‘university’ I mean 18+ where you do a degree: college ≠ university in the UK. I’m presuming your use of college here is my definition of university.)

Being told to just “pick something” never works, but at the same time the opposite “follow your dreams and ignore the haters” advice is dreadful and misguided. Sections of this quote explain better than I ever could why people pursue unrealistic career dreams and how this is backed up by never hearing stories of failed ones. Most people are not in a position, financially or otherwise, where they can just study and do what they want until they find their calling. I want to clarify for those who read yesterdays ask that ‘changing your mind is okay’ should come with the caveat that it must be well thought out and have a solid explanation that will be accepted by future admissions tutors/employers. There is an element of ‘sticking something out’ - you can’t leave a job or a degree programme after a few weeks without giving it a real try or it will look like the problem is you as a person, rather than that you have learnt and developed skills/perspectives that have led you to decide on a different career path.

How long would you have to remain in your current degree to have something to show for it? You have to think about how this will look on an academic record/CV/resume. There has been a lot of time invested, but what has been gained in the concrete terms of a CV? If it’s a few more months or a year it would be sensible to finish the degree.

Why can’t you go back to campus? If it’s for practical or financial reasons then that’s sensible and understandable. But if the reason is you think you’re “too old” I would disagree. There are people at my university, and on my programme, of all ages and that makes the student experience interesting. Yes, most students are 18/19, but that shouldn’t stop you from pursuing something that’s worthwhile to you.

I chose a different career path from fashion journalism, but that definitely shouldn’t affect the decision of what you chose to do. I would argue there’s very few people who ‘can’t’ do journalism: research and writing are skills that can be developed, some will have a natural flare for it, but they will come with practice. However, at this point I wouldn’t do a degree in it. I remember having a conversation at a dinner with an art director and editor of two magazines who said that they usually don’t recruit people who’ve studied fashion courses. They preferred individuals with a solid degree, from a good university, in language and/or literature who had ample work experience and by-lines.

They were not above admitting that both the fashion and media industries are not about academic merit. They are about who you know. People hire people that get recommended to them by those they trust without sparing much thought for what they scored in a module five years ago. I got my internships this way, though I got the attention of the programme director who recommended me for them through academic merit, but that alone would have done nothing for me. Essentially the purpose of the degree I was doing at LCF, and I realised this before applying, wasn’t the ‘doing of the degree’ and what I would learn, it was about who I would meet. Those contacts would be how I got a job. Employment opportunities wouldn’t be reflective of my actual ability.

You are right in saying a career in fashion journalism is unlikely to pay well. Without knowing someone in the industry you may have to lower your expectations as to where you’ll end up working. From what I remember of the last contact I had with anyone on the degree programme I left, many ended up as copywriters for department stores, weekly lifestyle magazines, and celebrity gossip magazines; some had the resources to become full time bloggers; others completely retrained, one as a lawyer.

You don’t necessarily need to take classes to find out what interests you, particularly if they’re costing you financially. There are lots of talks/lectures/courses available for free online, and even more ‘popular’ books on all kinds of subjects. As for how will you know what interests you/what you want to do, I’m not sure how to answer that other than to choose a few options and experience them. I mentally could picture myself working in the fashion industry, but when I actually did I realised it wasn’t for me. People often have an idea of what a job is and find that when they do it it’s not like that idea at all. Read widely (I would throughly recommend Derren Brown’s ‘Happy’ for you and anyone in a situation where they feel stuck and/or unsure of what they want to do or where they are in their life), gain as much work experience as possible, and hope that you’ll know when you know.

Marie-mun, you've mentioned your husband is a musician and from what I gathered (correct me if I'm wrong), he supports you and your son? I really want to pursue my music for a career but I'm scared to take that leap. You make me feel like I could do it. Any advice?

Yes, Mr. Frenchie is a musician and he is by far the breadwinner. The bacon bringer homer.

I can, and will, give you a full lowdown on how it works for us but let me just tell you right off the bat that there are some ah, extra, things that really helped drive his career along.

1. He’s a musical prodigy. It helps. A lot lol.

2. He’s a people person. Again, this helps a l o t.

3. He went from living the bachelor life to having a new girlfriend and a babu on the way in a span of 3 months so. There was a very strong fire under his butt that motivated him. That helped a lot.

4. He plays multiple instruments {piano, guitar, bass, vocals, and organ professionally, mandolin and uke he can teach but doesn’t play out}

I also want to say before I begin that everything I’m about to say isn’t a requirement to have a career as a musician, it’s just what he does to support his family and also to give us the lifestyle we want. (we like nice things and we aren’t ashamed to admit it.) You may not have a family to support. You might not live in an area where buying a house is sensible. You might be a minimalist. Who knows, I don’t, but I’ll still do my best to help maybe clear your brains up a bit.

One thing (and most career musicians will tell you the same thing) that you need to know is there is no one-and-done as far as music goes. Unless you’re a sound engineer or schoolteacher or something, very few “music” jobs pay a livable salary. Performance jobs especially as I imagine this is what you’re referring to.

Because there is no one-and-done, prepare to work odd hours, drive or commute otherwise a lot, and also be asked “what’s your real job”. a l o t. So. How to pay your bills on your music career? Here are some options for you, built out of literally everything Mr. Frenchie does. {read more for obscene length lmao}

Gigs:

The first and most obvious answer. For this, you will have to pay your dues. 4 hour gigs @ $50-75 a pop, bringing all of your own sound equipment and possibly playing to 4 drunks passed out on the tables. DO IT. Make friends with the bartenders. Make friends with management. Make friends even with those guys at the tables. You never know who has connections to better paying jobs. You never know. {Mr. Frenchie has gotten jobs playing private birthday parties @ $700+ for two hours from making friends with people at shitty bars. GET IN WITH THE PEOPLE.}

This will suck at first. It will suck so hard and you will be tired, and you will probably hate the music you’re playing and if you have a s/o at home they will be annoyed and frustrated at times. It’s okay. It’s part of the job.

But here’s the thing. Don’t get stuck in these gigs. Regardless of the music you like, learn everything. Learn one hit wonders for the has-been hotties at the bar. Learn classic rock, learn country, learn the songs everyone is so fucking sick of hearing. Learn top 40 pop tunes, learn jazz standards, learn 40’s and 50’s ballads. Learn holiday music. Learn traditional music (traditional Irish tunes are what’s popular here) LEARN IT ALL.

The more songs you have in your repertoire, the more versatile you’ll be. You don’t want to get offered a gig at an elderly community brunch (sounds snoozy but trust me, those people are some of the most fun and tip well ;) ) and have to turn it down because all you know is Glam Rock and a couple U2 tunes. Trust me.

If you work at it, you will reach a point where you can turn down those $50 gigs. You’ll get to a point where you can say no to anything that doesn’t pay your minimum + bar tab & food. Though gigging is not Mr. Frenchie’s main income, he does love to do it. He rarely plays out at bars and is now doing upscale restaurants and local bay cruises instead. :)

Meeting people at gigs is a good way to get Cocktail Hour jobs at weddings as well. This is something Mr. Frenchie only does here and there as it often interferes with his salary job, but the pay is good. :)

Teaching:

One of the main parts of our household income. Private lessons aren’t exactly “performance” but they pay. Lessons privately (on your own, outside of a studio) will obviously pay more, but if you don’t have a name in the music industry of your area yet, I highly recommend poking around at music schools/studios looking for instructors.

Teaching is a much steadier source of income than gigs (as most bars and restaurants either rotate or “call when they need you”), but unlike gigs, it’s not for everyone. You can be a great musician and a poor teacher. This is the area where “being a people person” helps the most lol. Having a strong grasp of music theory also greatly helps in this area.

Teaching also opens windows to networking. People who put their kids in music lessons tend to be on the upper end of the pay grade (generally, not always), as it is an expensive activity. As you build a relationship with your students and thus their parents, you might find yourself hired for live music at their restaurants, cocktail hours for older children’s weddings, or of course, referrals to you as a music teacher for children of their friends. (currently Mr. Frenchie has a waiting list of parents who will not put their child with any instructor except him, but his teaching schedule is full up right now)

Musically Directing:

This one is probably one of the more difficult things to do, depending on your skill level. Musically directing local musicals is not easy or quick, but the pay is usually pretty good, and if you’re into musicals it’s a lot of fun. Of course, as you’re required to work with the full cast, you’d have to have knowledge of:

a. how musicals work

b. the show you’re musically directing

c. vocals (you’re essentially a voice coach for a large part of it)

d. conducting a pit band.

This though is the area I know the least about in regards to what he does, to be honest. All I know is that during a show I basically never see him because he’s at rehearsal 4x a week on top of everything else on this list lmao. That and his struggles with cast members who simply will not practice.

If directing doesn’t seem like your bag, musicals are always looking for pit musicians! Check in with colleges and universities for these opportunities first, as most community theaters tends to have “their people” and likely won’t hire without prior experience or “knowing a guy”.

Music Ministry:

This is our biggest loaf of bread.

This particular loaf of bread though, is definitely not for everyone. One thing to know though is that you don’t actually need to be a person of faith to acquire a music ministry job, though it um, obviously helps. It not only helps get you hired, but you’ll have a better grasp on what you’re doing as well as the reverence the Mass (or other service depending on which direction you take) deserves.

That’s right, my friend. Healthcare, vacation time, 401k, life insurance, the whollleeee kit and caboodle. I, of course, can only speak for the Catholic churches (as this is where Mr. Frenchie works), and even then, as he’s worked for several, only some have the financial stability to offer benefits. (though if the church has a school attached, your children can attend at reduced or 0 tuition! :D Our parish… does not have a school lmao, but he’s been offered jobs at some that do.)

Now this of course is also for the position of a music director. If you don’t qualify for this but wish to contribute in other ways (guitarist, violinist, cantor etc etc), you’ll most likely still receive a stipend, but you probably won’t be considered a “full time” employee as your responsibilities are literally just showing up and playing or singing lol.

One thing that music ministry does open the door for (especially on the off chance you’re an organist! You aren’t? Get yourself some lessons, stat), is funerals. Funerals are a really really good source of income, depending on the location, typically $125-200 per. (Again, speaking solely for Catholic funeral Masses) So if you’ve got a grasp on how a Mass works and can learn yourself some hymns, put your name in.

Music directors, of course, will get first refusal for funerals and weddings but there are a ton of times they either can’t or they’re on vacation or any other number of reasons and churches really like to keep lists of people who can fill in. If you do well, and you make connections in the ministry world, friends will refer you and your network will grow and grow. It’s also a good way to be in people’s ear in the event music director jobs open up (if you’re waiting on one) and to get offered one. :)

There was one point Mr. Frenchie was playing weekly across 3 parishes, plus College Campus Ministry on Sunday nights but we’ve finally managed to get it down to just our home parish where he is the music director, though he will take funerals from any parish that comes calling so long as there’s room in his schedule for it.

Okay I think that’s everything. Through all this he works easily 60-90hrs/week, commuting roughly 3 hours a day on average.

Hopefully I didn’t discourage you hahahaha but I didn’t want to just say “oh yes if you work hard enough you can totally do it!!

If you’re ride or die set on having a career solely on music you’ve written, you’re definitely in for a bad time, but if you open yourself up to literally everything on your journey to promote yourself, you might find some things you really enjoy doing all while supporting yourself and kicking the starving artist trope to the curb. :)
