One thing I REALLY HATE about the anime is that no one will ever understand how truly STRONG Akame is actually. Like yes, we see great feats of strength and speed, but as far as she was in the manga? She is so damn underpowered it’s not funny. For example!

In the anime, when a person is CUT with Murasame, it’s a slow acting poison, where it slowly creeps along the body. Where you have almost a couple MINUTES to reflect your life before succumbing to the poison. In truth, it’s more terrifying, sure, but to SMARTER foes, that’s not a good thing, because they can overcome it by things like amputation, etc. We look at Esdeath for instance in the anime, where she cut off her arm seconds after noticing. She was able to WATCH it creep along her arm, and then react. More on this in a moment though.

In the manga, this was not the case. Her poison in the manga? Was instant. In the first instance we saw someone hit by it, where she killed three BANDITS threatening to R.APE her, she slit their throats instantly. But, one of them DIDN’T die, he lived. Lived long enough to turn to try and kill her, but then instantly was hit with a fast acting poison that spread to his heart. He only had the second to utter a couple words before succumbing and dying in seconds. It wasn’t drawn out. But then, they were just grunts. So we move on to something more hard hitting: ESDEATH. Like I said up in the previous paragraph, in the anime, she was hit in the arm and amputated her arm, yes? She had time, etc.

This happened in the manga too...but she did NOT have time to watch it creep, or feel the poison effecting her.

The only one to LAND a decisive blow was Akame, out of MILLIONS of foes, and as stated, this poison is SUPER fast acting. So, in this position, where even ESDEATH was caught off guard, what must she do? She doesn’t have time to react. She will die in an instant. After all, One Slash Certain Kill is the nickname of her blade.

Simple: Esdeath wastes her one time a day shot of her TRUMP CARD to save her life.

To those who are unfamiliar with MAHAPADMA, this is a special ability created by Esdeath that she can use ONCE a day, to stop ALL TIME around her as she sees fit for several minutes if she so pleases. But once more, it can only be used once a day, and it takes A LOT of her energy to do it. So what did she do? She had to FREEZE TIME to stop the flow of the poison fast enough to take off her own arm.

This poison is NOT weak by any means, as no antidote in the entire world can be made to combat it. Because it isn’t a true poison: it’s a CURSE in the acting form of a poison. And there is no antidote, and no way to combat it.

Esdeath is the only one able to fight it off, because she is able to treat the wounds with her Ice Magic. For instance, she also gets several fingers cut off in the future fight, when she mistimed a dodge, and Akame’s speed once more catches her off guard. On the spot, she freezes her fingers over and creates ice digits to take position of the fingers.

Now then, the LAST point this post will touch on, is her CURSE FORM, or Trump Card, Ennoodzuno. Anyone who has followed me knows I’ve spoken about this at length many a time, but not once on this blog, and though in the future I WILL make a lengthy, full explanation of this form, this one will be just a small excerpt of the longer one being made.

The form is SUPER DIFFERENT between both Manga and Anime. And this one seriously pisses me off cause it shows how lazy the makers of the anime wanted to be with this form and this fight. But let’s get into it.

In the anime, we watch Akame activate this form after a not-so successful one on one fight with Esdeath as her normal self. This was not a thing in the manga. In the manga, Akame and Esdeath NEVER had an upright duel until she already activated this form. In the manga, MILLIONS fight to keep Akame secret, and let Akame rush around through their shadows and around their bodies. She kept her aura hidden, and she kept her BLOODLUST gone, and she waited for an opening. She waited. She watched. Esdeath was a monster on the battlefield. She was able to BEAT all the millions of foes around her with EASE, and only when she saw that opening did she STRIKE. And we see the conclusion.

Tatsumi in his Tyrant form, breaks through MAHAPADMA, and Esdeath drops it in time to fight back. But this results in Tatsumi being thrown aside. When Akame rushes to him, she is assaulted by him, and here is where we once more differ to the manga and anime.

In the anime, by this point, Tatsumi is already dead. He died saving the Imperial City from the First Teigu crashing down onto it after defeating it. He dies in her arms, even, and she SCREAMS in tears that he promised to return home to her alive. She couldn’t lose another friend. It devastated her. But this is when Esdeath arrives, and turns her back even on the empire she serves, WIPING OUT her own soldiers and the soldiers of the revolution, to block herself and Akame in and fight her one on one. Now, this is partly correct to the manga, but we move on.

After Tatsumi loses control to Tyrant, he BEGS for Akame to kill him. Because he doesn’t want to fade away. He doesn’t want to lose control again and kill her or anyone else. And so she does: and this is where her true TRUMP CARD activation kicks in. In the anime, all she had to do was CUT HERSELF and succumb to her own poison. Her body would be strengthened by it. But she could only do it one time: logically, that doesn’t make sense. If you overcame the poison ONE time, why can’t you many other times? Even after the effects of it wear off and her curse is branded on her, she STILL logically could do it again, and risk death even more. But it’s still possible.

The manga is different though: the true activation is in killing the one CLOSEST TO HER HEART. Because she casts off her humanity to do this, and becomes a true DEMON, in a sense. She becomes a true WIELDER OF THE DEMON SWORD. And then the fights truly start, both anime and manga.

Now, in the anime? She is seen going toe to toe with Esdeath, the two are now equals...and this is shown in the gifs I have down below. none of which are sped up, by the way. I made sure to grab gifs ACCURATELY representing the exact speed of the anime fight.

Now all of this? This is all wrong. This is where the anime pisses me off. Because this is not at all the case. These two should NOT be on par with one another at this point. ‘But Wolf, Esdeath clearly is stronger, so shouldn’t they be on par with Akame in this form? They are equals now! Two demons on the field!’ Great question in theory.

In the manga, not only is the parameters of the change different, but so is the actual change and activation. In the anime, Akame is consumed by her poison and put through severe pain. A mist forms around her body and face, and she is changed. In the manga...no. She literally EXPLODES with energy on a nuclear level. To the point that Esdeath, in the HEAT of her warhungry bloodlust, PAUSES from killing a person in her grip, and TURNS with fear towards her.

This alone is a huge change, but then we add on this: Akame is literally FLOWING with dark energy. And it’s not just like, the mist of the explosion. She BURNS an aura of pure darkness. And if this wasn’t enough, ESDEATH cannot even see her fighting. Esdeath is the strongest fighter of the Empire, she is a menace...and even SHE cannot fight Akame now with how fast and strong she has become.

Now, we are nearing the end of the SMALL version of this topic. This all shows how DANGEROUS that my little Akame truly is. But, here is where we conclude it: the difference in their strength is literally day to night.

Review: Dauntless (Open Beta)

I denote that it is in fact, in it’s open beta but I’ve played betas before and typically games don’t change too much upon release. There are a few changes in the works including fixing up the rather wacky UI and some weapon buffs. I’ll elaborate more on that shortly.

Dauntless is, as many are calling, a Monster Hunter clone. This is not an insult, in the same way many ARPG’s are called Diablo clones or passable MMO’s sometimes get called WoW clones. They’re simply the codifiers of a very specific kind of game, and there is no shame in riding their coattails to a degree. I have little to no experience with the Monster Hunter franchise except for a brief stint on the PSP during a road trip with a friend. I have little memory of it, but now I have what I guesstimate to be 40 to 50 hours and have reached the current endgame. Whatever the lore is, it’s minimal. You start as a recruit (naturally) on some magically inclined airship (as they do) which crashes on a floating island where you face a single behemoth called the Gnasher. What follows is several minutes of frantic slashing as the game does very little to tell you how to play. I didn’t learn that “TAB” brought up a combo menu until well after the fact, which tells you how to use the varied weapons in the game.

It’s not necessarily as complicated as it might look. Weapons don’t typically have more than three or four combos and there’s typically one or two go-to’s that you find works for you and just stick with. With the sword, I find that three basic attacks and a dodge is enough to get some hits in and then avoid the very inevitable spin attack most behemoths do. Each weapon functions a bit differently. Chain blades are noteworthy of being part-destroyers which is vital if you want to get any crafting done. However as of the beta they are considered underpowered and not often seen in higher tiers of play. Swords are solid all around and hammers are built for staggering enemies. Axes hit hard but are slow. War Pikes are mostly support, creating wounds that let the team do extra damage to certain parts. Most weapons are capable of staggering or interrupting a behemoth which is important, and it can only happen during certain windows in their attack patterns. I’d love to say every behemoth is unique but some are very easily seen to be reskins of others. The Pangar and Hellion for example are basically just Gnashers with extra armor plating and maybe a slightly different face. However they all have a very similar tail slam attack and they’ll even roll around the same way. Drask, Nayzaga, and Charrogg all look like they share the same skeleton but still manage to function a little differently in terms of how they fight. That’s fair enough, but on a visual standpoint I wish they stood out more.

The gameplay is largely comprised of “hunts”. There are different forms of hunts but it’s all the same thing but with varied rewards depending on what you are trying to focus on. Are you suffering from a plant shortage to craft helpful potions? Go on an Expedition, where you’ll get a small boost of materials regardless if you pick them out of the ground yourself or not. You go on a Patrol when you need a boost in weapon and armor upgrades, and you can go on a direct Pursuit if you need a behemoth’s very specific part (for me it’s almost always those damn tails) but at the cost of lower resource gains. Chiefly, the gameplay is mostly just learning behemoth attack patterns and dodging the right ones or ideally, all of them. The idea is that behemoths will have certain attacks based around how they’re being hit. For example, the Pangar will kick its feet around if two or more players are slicing at its heels. If some people are hitting its tail, it will do a tail slap on the ground. Most behemoth’s attacks are random but they do follow a pattern and learning them is highly necessary, as they all have openings to exploit. I say that, with the utmost frustration when trying to fight the Kharabak, a flying insectoid type thing with openings that only last a couple seconds at a time.

He and his higher level “Razorwing” variant are easily my least favorite bosses. Attacks fast, moves quickly, rarely lands, and when he does I’m usually a mile away from all the running and strafing away from his high damage attacks. Yet his equipment boosts my stamina functionalities as well as part damage. I will not enjoy farming them. For those wondering; No, this is not an MMO. Every hunt is instanced for parties of one to four. The city will have a handful of players but they are not typically very chatty. Despite however many thousands of players actively playing right now, I never see more than a dozen running around the hub town (of which there’s only one, and could benefit from being just a touch smaller so the crafting vendors are closer together). Some may be concerned about the level of grind that may be involved and I can tell you, it’s not too bad. The game gives you quests to progress through each island and a lot of the earlier behemoths you may only face a time or two. Really, the most important part of the game is understanding the behemoths is the most vital part of playing the game well and there are a couple of learning curves that spike more than others. There’s the Hellion in the fourth island that you discover who acts as a test for players and I can tell you from personal experience, queuing with random players rarely ended in a success. Beyond a couple of walls, you only need to hunt the same behemoth a handful of times in order to get a full set of armor. This changes in the fifth island (or “tier” as they’re called) when you need more and more parts and upgrade tokens in order to maximize your equipment. In the endgame the upgrades needed become a bit more elaborate, so you will be facing the same behemoths a couple dozen times but you’ll very likely fetch some upgrades regardless.

Those upgrades come in the form of perks that can be added and removed, and consistently acquired through Slayer, Weaponmaster, and Alchemist ranks which function as the game’s “daily” system, always giving you something to focus on. In theory, you will never not progress. In practice, I find that randomly queuing with strangers in the higher tiers of play rarely ends in success, and you get nothing when you fail a hunt. Like many party-based multiplayer games, you’ll have a higher chance at progressing if you join a discord community, guild, or just gather your friends for behemoth ass-kicking. There are micro-transactions but good news, it’s all cosmetic. Well, most of it. You can actually purchase resource packs that give you chunks of useful potions which might help smooth out certain hunts. I bought one that had a whole fifteen “Bulwark” potions which reduce incoming damage by 45% for three whole hits, not even in a time window. Just three hits, whenever they may occur. I find this incredibly useful and they’re vital for keeping me in the fight. However not one of those supply packs will give you any boost to your armor and weapon and you won’t have any technical edge otherwise, just pure utility.

The game, as it stands, is very playable. There’s some difficulty spikes here and there, and plenty left to do once you hit the gear ceiling. It’s still an open beta so I’m not sure what their content plan is. Obviously I expect more behemoths in the future but I do hope they add some in-between tiers and not just an ever increasing top ceiling of powerfully annoying behemoths that some of the player base may never see. I hope they add more content in the downtime of hunts. I feel it could use some minor monsters to kill while looking for the behemoth, to charge up weapon meters for their special attacks and maybe gain some extra resource types to fuel some potion-like utilities. There’s much more for them to do and I’ll be happy to review it again when the time comes, where I may reiterate some of these points but time will tell if the experience improves overall.

Darksiders Genesis PC Review

Every so often a game comes along that completely redefines whatever we thought was possible within its genre. Sometimes it finds a highly innovative use for a simple mechanic, or invents a new form of gameplay altogether. Either way, this game leaves players floored, and it sets a new standard for the genre from then onwards. Well, nothing in the Darksiders series has ever been that game.

Instead, the main selling point of the Darksiders franchise has always been how tried and trusted mechanics within the hack-‘n-slash genre could be joined in the best, possible combination. Whatever their faults were, the gameplay in Darksiders I through III always tried to engage the player on multiple levels of gameplay. They were the very definition of becoming more than the sum of their parts.

The final Horseman, Strife

Therefore, I find myself not quite sure what to make of Darksiders Genesis. Airship Syndicate made a substantial departure from the third-person, Zelda style of the previous games, and tries to embrace an isometric, dungeon-crawler design. Unfortunately, Genesis fails to commit towards this new direction in certain ways which makes it difficult to recommend over other more established games of this sort.

To Hell and Back

The overall narrative and lore of the Darksiders franchise has become so vast that the games have spawned their own Wiki site. Genesis, to its credit, is perhaps easier to digest than previous titles, but that’s like saying a fractured femur is better than a fractured skull. I still had only the vaguest idea what was going on despite this being a series first with a codex for the characters and events in the world.

What I eventually learned (after enough research on the Darksiders Wiki to warrant a PhD) is that Genesis is a prequel to the first game, though I have yet to discover what exactly ‘Genesis’ in the title refers to. Anyway, the story follows two of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse – War, and newcomer Strife – on their mission to confront none other than Lucifer himself in the realm of Hell.

Strife gets a berserk mode with his guns where they switch to maximum power for a few seconds.

For the unacquainted, The Four Horsemen are enforcers of the Charred Council – a multifaceted entity that has taken on the task of ensuring a balance between the realms of Heaven, Hell, and the kingdom of mankind. It seems the demon lord Lucifer, naughty boy, has secretly been smuggling powerful artifacts out of Eden as favours to four lesser demon lords residing in Hell.

The Charred Council therefore sends War and Strife to see what ol’ Lucy is up to since they fear the demon overlord could represent a serious threat to the balance if left to his own devices. As you’d expect, the two Horsemen yet again find themselves in the midst of a theological soap opera in which every step closer to Lucifer adds increasing complexity to their mission.

The game is as such divided into 16 chapters where the player completes one dungeon mission to the next with puzzles, boss fights, secrets and loot to gather. It is the classic, dungeon crawler modus operandi, really. Thankfully, you don’t have to complete missions to save your progress as the game will happily drop you right back where you left off for players who need a coffee break.

In between missions, the player yet again has the option to trade currency with one of my favourite characters, Vulgrim, and his new accomplice, Dis, for all sorts of damage perks and combat moves. The classic arena mode also returns where facing off against several waves of enemies allow players to hone their combat skill, but also to farm some currency like souls and creature cores.

Literally between angels and demons

What sets Genesis apart is not just the withdrawn camera, but also the fact that there are two, playable horsemen for the first time in one game. Throughout all the dungeons and areas of Hell for the player to explore, there is always the option to switch instantly between either Strife or War. This holds true even for boss fights, and players also have the option of joining with a co-op partner.

From a single-player perspective, the interchangeable nature of the Horsemen adds to the variety in combat. War deals more damage through melee strikes up close and personal with his colossal sword. A surprising number of classic combos and attacks from Darksiders have accompanied War’s appearance in this game which felt pleasantly nostalgic during the moments I switched to him.

Strife, on the other hand, is the ninja of the duo with quicker and more agile sword moves, which go with a choice of several ranged attacks from his guns. It is upon switching to Strife that the gameplay in Genesis begins to lean towards the more classic, ‘bullet hell’ type shooter. Strife can use several different types of ammo, but the charge shot and the ‘laser beam’ remained my best friends for the most part.

My general take-away from the combat is that it plays… fine I guess. The combos offer a decent variety of attack possibilities, and the option to swap between two protagonists ensured that I always had access to an alternate strategy to mix things up. Unfortunately, it is when comparing this system to others in this genre that the shortcomings in Genesis’s structure go from negligible, to glaring.

On those sticky points

My main issue with Darksiders Genesis is how it feels suspended between two genres. It plays like a classic in the original series by THQ Nordic, but it is as if Airship Syndicate decided at the last minute that Genesis should be an isometric action game, so they shifted the camera angle without fine-tuning the rest. The result is a game which has feet on both sides of the fence without really enjoying the green grass on either side.

Take the environments and graphics, for example. Genesis is practically just as gorgeous as any non-isometric Darksiders game, and the levels have a similar scale which favour a flat design. Both War and Strife therefore often became obscured behind certain environmental objects, and even on my 24 inch monitor, the viewing distance made me forget which horseman I was playing sometimes.

Don’t try to hide from me!

I know that fans of the game have been very vocal online about the fact that Genesis is not trying to be Diablo… but perhaps it could learn a thing or two from Blizzard. Diablo III is a masterclass in isometric level design as the paths sort of curve in on themselves to imbue the game’s dungeons with a sense of verticality and depth.

In Genesis, levels feel more one-dimensional and linear, which in turn make them less interesting than they could have been, and combat suffers from a similar issue. A particular advantage of having a withdrawn camera is that the player can visually appreciate their character’s badass moves more holistically. You feel empowered as you get a full view of how the protagonist’s fighting affect everything in their surroundings.

In my experience, War and Strife feel too underpowered. On normal difficulty War would chop away enthusiastically at even some of the weaker enemies only for their health bars to drain at a complete snail’s pace. Strife is even worse. In a game that was supposed to be his debut, I actually preferred to avoid playing as Strife because he is surprisingly ineffective in close quarter fighting.

This is War’s chaos form where he gains immunity from damager and delivers maximum damage too. Strife turns into a giant scorpion with a tail mounted machine gun.

My point is not that Genesis ever felt overly difficult. The problem is that this type of gameplay would have been more suitable for a traditional, third-person fighting game where stats are less important than your timing and your fighting techniques. To place fighting that requires this much input from the player into an isometric game seems like forcing a square peg into a round hole.

The rough in the diamond

So the point is therefore to explore dungeons, find loot, grind it out in the arena, and then apply them to your character, right? The thing is that loot in Darksiders Genesis is not that interesting. The levels can offer good replay value since the abilities that War and Strife will gain later act as metroidvania-style keys to finding new items.

Yet, the loot that I did find throughout my incessant explorations of all the dungeons felt like it had a very subtle impact on gameplay. Enemies mostly drop health, ammo or souls, and I never felt like I stumbled upon that truly rare or ‘legendary’ piece of loot. What I did find mostly felt like it was passively adding small increments to abstract numbers running in the background.

Where’s the fun in that? A varied and robust loot system is an utterly crucial component of all dungeon-crawlers, and the rather limited variety in Genesis shows its importance for the incentive to explore. Also, don’t get me started on the skill tree and the creature cores I meantioned earlier. It is dull, it is unintuitive, and I barely noticed a difference in gameplay.

Back to the drawing board then

Frankly, I am not the biggest fan of isometric RPG’s. It just happens to be a genre that I inexplicably neglected in my portfolio as a gamer, and all I can put down as experience is Diablo III, and a healthy dose of the Divinity series. The faults in Genesis are probably more obvious to me than players who have more patience and investment in this area of gaming.

I am, however, utterly fanatical about Darksiders, and I am sorely disappointed that this is how they chose to give Strife his debut. He was the most mysterious and most anticipated horseman for players to meet, and this game does not do his introduction to the series justice. As a long-time player, I must be honest and say Genesis leaves too much of what made previous games enjoyable behind. I feel absolutely no connection to it as a fan.

Yet, Genesis cannot rightly be called a terrible game. In fact, I might even have difficulty calling Genesis a bad game. Forgettable is perhaps the defining word I would use. By itself, Genesis would have made for a decent hack-‘n-slash title. It’s true moment of failure is trying to squash itself into an isometric, action mould: It simply doesn’t fit.
