#but concert prices and food preferences don't at ALL

it's always funny to me when people say they don't think Harry and Louis are still together because they're *so different*, especially when those differences are about their public image, because to me the absolute precision of the way their public images divide every possible personality trait is just another one of the things that seems way too tidy to be natural to me and makes me think they ARE. Without each of them having a carefully constructed public face that excluded a lot of things there is just literally no way there wouldn't be SO MUCH MORE overlap given how much we know, even so, that they have in common- and honestly sometimes I wonder if that carries over to business stuff too, if that is also deliberately split in two different directions like, let's try both, you try this way and I'll try this way. When they each had that conversation with a dear friend about deciding to prioritize making music in certain ways and reevaluated what they would be doing, did they also come up with two different ways of doing that stuff and each take one route? Crack theory in a way, but I stand by the first half either way- they have way too many common interests and habits (and too much common history) to avoid mentioning the same things publicly WAY more than they do without an effort being involved. IMO.
#there are lots of things that make me think hm maybe they're not together#its something I consider possible for a lot of reasons#but concert prices and food preferences don't at ALL#also when I see people talk about what Louis is like in contrast to harry who wants to be famous#and be in the industry#and so forth and so on#I am simply in awe of Louis' skill at selling himself as our relatable bff boy next door#I really just think harry has chosen to outsource a lot of parts of the harry styles tm machinery and ignore it#and it's not one of the things about him I respect the most#but I feel like it's consistent for him and also part of his need to just kind of check out of some parts of the whole thing#blah blah blah

What are the dads’ favorite bonding activities with their kids? 🥺
hello friend!!
Price: I like to imagine Price's girls are engaged in all sorts of extracurricular activities from ballet to the school play. I think his favorite bonding activity with them would be taking them out to eat after a recital or a performance. Just his little ladies and some good old greasy spoon diner food: what else could a man want? And you know that when the girls grow up, those nights are going to be some of their fondest childhood memories.
Ghost: Caden is a parallel play kind of kid. He's quietly doing his little crayon drawings next to Simon watching a tv show. I could also see them bonding when Simon takes Caden out to run errands with him, groceries and stuff. Caden gets a bit of socialization, and Simon is there if he gets overwhelmed and needs a bit of comfort. It really brings them together: the kid knows that no matter how distant his dad can be, he can always rely on Simon.
Soap: JOCK ALERT. His favorite bonding activity is taking his kids to the park. Impromptu soccer games, roleplaying on the playground equipment, buying them ice cream on a hot summer day. When Elodie's older, she stops going, preferring to hang out with friends or do her own thing. But I can see wayyyy in the future when she's an adult, she'll have a lot of nostalgia for those days and will love going on walks with her dad.
Gaz: Kyle is a planned activities kind of man, a very take the kids to Disney World and make lifetime memories sorta guy. Every summer the family gets an airbnb by the lake, and every winter they're off at a ski lodge. (Here's to that delicious, delicious dual income household.) Violet and Elliott are always the kids blowing into the first day of class full of stories about all the fun stuff they got up to over the summer.
König: Dress-up. Come on, you knew this was coming. He's so girldad. Ava can't keep her hands out of her dad's luscious locks, and loves making him paper crowns because of his callsign (he definitely speaks German with her at home so she knows what it means). He also buys Ava those big plastic playsets that are a grocery checkout or a little kitchen and roleplays little scenarios with her. Ava's a militant chef, by the way. She would make a great line cook.
Horangi: Concerts with his daughter, Ryujin. Probably a few raves, as well. Ryujin's a punk rock and indie scene kinda gal, but she'll listen to anything, and has a few favorite kpop groups whose concerts she's dragged Hong-jin to. He's a diehard Once (fan of the girl group Twice) himself. They've also definitely gotten a few tattoos/piercings together, which would be an odd thing to do with your dad if Ryujin's dad were not so cool.
Keegan: Same as Johnny, except instead of taking his kids to safe parks and soccer fields, he takes them into the woods. Camping, fishing, teaching them a bunch of useful skills. It's such a "things your divorced dad does with you when he doesn't know what else to do for the weekend you're staying with him" activity, but Jason and Cecelia have never had someone do those things with them before, so they're having a good time. Other than that, laser tag and airsoft is a big one. Keegan was hesitant to get them into stuff like that, but they've always been curious about his military career and things just sort of escalated from there. I saw this tiktok of a cosplayer in a Logan mask captioned "when you're playing airsoft with your 15-year spec ops dad" and it's the cosplayer plastering themselves against a wall in terror: that's Keegan's kids. He's not going to hold back when he plays, and they don't want him to.

I always want to go to concerts that my friends have no interest in but Im too afraid to go by myself. Im 21, so Im not too young, it just feels rly intimidating! Do you have any advice for either convincing my friends to go or just getting the courage to go by myself?
I'm going to be honest, unless an artist is one I KNOW my friends are SUPER DUPER stoked about, I don't even bother asking if they wanna go. My preferred concert experience is alone because it can a logistical nightmare to organize a concert trip with friends. People waffling about availability, everyone trying to buy tickets together (though venmo has made this easier), financial incompatibility (ie x friend is only willing to spend x amount while y friend is hardcore and wants to spend y for the BEST tickets), and, as we get older, different willingness to do GA or concerts that require lots of running about in the city.
So, I don't haev tips for convincing friends to go because... I don't care if my friends go. Concerts can be great bonding experiences (looove a good moment screaming lyrics at each other) but... concerts should be focused.... on the performance, so I never really notice their absence.
As for going alone, you have to confront WHY you are afraid going alone?
Afraid of getting stranded somewhere? Look up train times extensively, get a train time app, and bring a portable charger as well as a charge cord/block for your phone. Listen... I've been the person hauling ASSSS to get to the last train but a. I haven't missed the train yet and b. worst possible thing is... you idk stay up all night and catch the first train available, which'll be around 5-6am. Not ideal but... not a disaster? But, again, most concerts end by 10/11 and most of the time this isn't a problem.
Afraid to look like a loser by yourself? You're at a fucking CONCERT, dude?? Unless you are behaving poorly and ruining the experience for the people around you/the artist, it is impossible to be a loser at a concert. No one is thinking about you at a show unless you make yourself a problem.
Afraid to be bored/lonely in line? Just... talk to someone. Offer them a snack. (Carry snacks with you, btw. Snacks you eithre KNOW you will consume by the time you reach doors or you're fijne with throwing out if asked to.) Tell them their concert outfit is cute, evne if it isn't. Nervously say "OMG, I can't wait, this is my first time seeing X!" You're surrounded by people who love the same thing you do. Talk about it!
Afraid of arriving home at night? Night time is just day time with less light. Put your phone's flashlight on while walking to your car or have an emergency number geared up on your phone btu like... you're fine. I've walked home from the train station, with bleeding heels, from a show. At 2am. Besides the disgustingness of me just dropping into bed while covered in sweat and blood, it was fine.
I love my friends. Dearly. But I don't let their lack of availability limit the thing sI can do in my life. If I want to see a movie or a show or go eat some food that they don't want... it's time to fucking od it.
I've been going to shows in NYC by myself since I was like... 17ish. I think I started off going to broadway shows by myself but like... same issues.
Just be safe. Don't drink a lot (alcohol prices at the show will ensure this anyways. be safe if you're pregaming and don't get caught if you're drinking in line). Maybe have a red bull in line if you're worried about being alert. But like... shows are generally safe places surrounded by people who love what you love and do NOT want anyone to get hurt. Even hardcore shows.
Nothing to be afraid of.
#just do basic concert protocol#look up what is allowed in the venue#make sure your phone is charged and ready#bring something to do if you're waiting in line#put a book on your phone#tell a loved one where you are#lok up directions/train times AHEAD of time#maybe screenshot that info if you might lose wifi#like.... idk man!

Okay FINE, I don't go out enough. Yes, I should be wasting money on alcohol and destroying my liver or paying insane prices for bottled water in order to find a mate. Sure. Let's say that is normal
First of all, I've done that. I've spent hours on a weekend sitting in bars or lounges in my sexiest dress, bored out of my mind. I did not get my phone out other than to check the time because being on your phone makes you less approachable. Yes, I read the advice. I smiled at strangers and strangled all my anxietes to make small talk if someone was ordering right beside me. None of that made any difference.
But then they say 'oh you shouln't go alone! Bring a friend! People will approach a couple of chatting girls easier than a lonely girl!'
Ok, I say. And immediately propose: 'Sure then, let's go iut Friday night!'
And all of a sudden:
Oh I have a netflix night planned with my partner, we're watching the Bear
Oh and the following weekend my parents are coming over
Oh and weekend after that we go out of town
Fantastic. Trully unironically happy for you. And my absolute favorite, a response when I ask a friend out:
Oh I can't, I'm going out with some friends.
This response neatly segregates me out as a not-friend-to-bring and ok, I can be grown up about this, people absolutely have the right to have separate groups of friends and they owe me nothing. But this illustrates my situation where I'm either 'going out more' alone or I'm not going out.
This will sound like a childish complaint once again, but I am rarely a priority to the friends I made in the last few years that physically live in the same city. They are good people and I understand and don't hold a grudge, but I'm also not exaggerating above when I say that even getting to tag along with someone is impossible.
And whenever I bring up the topic of where to meet people, the first 3 answers are always the insufferable trio: work-bar-nighclub. If you happen not to enjoy crowded sweaty spaces in covid times or loud music that is never your taste because you prefer string quartets – it's your own fault for being too 'quirky' and lonely as a consequence.
I understand that someone people need the advice of 'go out to eat on your own! Go to a museum date with yourself! Don't refuse experiences just because you're on your own!' and that's true but that's pretty much the only way I've been living my life. I go to restaurants, cafes, concerts, plays, movies, museums and galleries on my own. I keep smiling and attempting polite small talk with staff and other patrons, and helping when people drop things or get lost or can't find the restrooms. I'm not bragging, I just genuinely think all those are decent things to do and the old tune of trying to be what I want to see in others and how I want others to see me.
And nothing. This brings experiences: tasty food, art, music, stories, days lives learning and admiring, but absolutely no human connection. Nothig long term. I collect those moments when I talk to strangers for a minute – with no romantic or any kind of expectations – like little beads of human interaction that I have to stash away for later remeniscing because there's a deficit. I do things that I like on my own and face the world on my own with as much kindness as I can, and I attract noone with that.
And then I tell someone I'd like a romantic relationship some day, and they send me to a nighclub, to go with a friend which they are refusing to then be – the one to accompany me and show me the secret techniques of neurotypical thin people that collect phone numbers like a polished piano collects dust. I have to go alone, so far outside of my comfort zone that it becomes a discomfort zone (with an added touch of pandemic for the past four years), drown my anxietes in an overpriced cocktail, dance to shit music, then in three hours turn around and go home, commuting for an hour on famously safe night streets (although I have been told 'who'd want to rape you anyway?..' which was an outstanding way to make rape sound like a compliment). And I'm supposed to do that repeatedly, weekend after weekend, until it works. This is so miserable.
Or tinder. They also send me to tinder. Recently I was also told to go to a paid matchmaker. Which... Yeah.
Yeah the right answer is hobbies I guess, but theatre courses are expensive, and there are no chess clubs that would work with my commute or that accept new members. So.

Haruka is Makoto's sugar daddy. Not literally but it sounded funny in my head. Anyway!
Haruka starts to earn a lot of money when brands use him in their ads and so on. Of course, he uses a part of this money to pay his bills and have a comfortable daily life, but it is a very small part. Another part, the largest, is kept in a savings account at the bank. And the third and last part, which is a little more than the first, although less than the second, is for Makoto.
Haruka knows that Makoto doesn't need his money to take care of the basics, because he has his own part-time job and his parents help him with one thing or another, but still whenever he asks if he has enough money for the month, he even offers to help him pay for the water or something, though Makoto always tells him it's not necessary.
I imagine that Makoto, although he does not live up to date with money, does not have enough to fulfill every whim that occurs to him. And that's where Haruka comes in.
When they are walking down the street and Makoto insists on going to a cheaper place to eat or that he would like to go to some place, but he has not enough money, Haruka assures him that they will go because he will pay for the food or the coffee or whatever.
If Haruka sees that Makoto is very interested in something in a store window and knows that he wants to buy it, but that he refuses to do so, preferring to use the money for transportation and food for the week, he goes and buys it for him at that moment, or later to give it as a surprise gift.
When they are talking and Makoto tells him with great emotion that a new video game, a book that catches his attention, a new console will come out, or that a band he likes will have a concert soon and in the city, things like that, Haruka is already looking at how to pay the presale even if the price is so high that he could use that amount of money to live well for two months.
Haruka: Makoto, they already announced the [insert new console name]
Makoto: Oh, yeah! It looks really good, right?
Haruka: Yes. By the way, I just paid for the presale.
Makoto: YOU WHAT?
Haruka: I bought it.
Makoto: How so???
Haruka: I saw the announcement, I entered the website and I paid for it. I thought you would want it, so I bought it.
Makoto: You bought a 500 dollar console?
Haruka: Yeah.
Makoto: But you bought it for me????
Haruka: That's exactly what I did, yes
Makoto: You didn't have to! Haru, you should use your money for something more important like yourself or you should save it for when you retire! Idk, you could even use it to buy a house.
Haruka: You're important. And I do have some savings for the future. I'm even saving my money for a house, but I want you to graduate first.
Makoto: Why?
Haruka: So we can find a house where we can live together. I mean, I think it's important that you like it. And I don't want to interrupt your studies.
Makoto: You're saving money for OUR house?
Haruka: Today you are more distracted than usual. Yes.
Makoto.exe stopped working.
Makoto thinks is cute that Haruka gives him gifts all the time, but he feels a little bit guilty.

I’m moving to Boston in a couple of days, is there anything you’d suggest putting on my list to see?
Hi! Sorry it took me so long to answer this, I just moved as well and as you may have experienced already, moving in the Boston area this time of year is hell. But now that I’m (mostly) physically and emotionally recovered from the chaos...
Welcome! There are tons of things to see and do in Boston. Bear in mind that some of these places might be closed or at limited capacity due to Covid, but as of September 2021 the city is mostly open—just don’t forget your mask if you’re going somewhere indoors!
Indoor:
Museum of Fine Arts Boston - My happy place! The MFA is huge and always has something new every time I visit. I recently went to their Monet exhibit and highly recommend it if you have a chance to see it before it ends in October.
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum - This is a smaller, more laid back, but just as lovely art museum with a rich and interesting history. There's a gorgeous courtyard in the center of it as well!
Museum of Science - Honestly super enjoyable for all ages! They also have a planetarium.
New England Aquarium - They have penguins. What’s not to love?
Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) - You might be sensing a pattern here. Yet another art museum! If you prefer contemporary art, this is the place to go.
The Mapparium - Located inside the Christian Science Plaza, this is a giant glass globe depicting a map from 1935 that you can go inside.
Trident Booksellers & Cafe - This place is my go-to for books, gifts, and occasionally brunch. They also host tons of fun events, like Skip The Small Talk, Rocky Horror Shadowcast performances, and even Speed Dating! I went to a Queer Lady Board Game Speed Dating/Friending event there and it was suuuuper fun.
Outdoor:
The Freedom Trail - This is a tour of historic landmarks around the city. You can follow the brick path on your own, or catch a tour, guided by a reenactor in historical costume.
Fenway Park - Even if you don't go for a game, you can take a tour of the park. Definitely would recommend if you're a sports fan.
The North End - Beautiful neighborhood for strolling around, lots of Italian restaurants and bakeries. Mike’s Pastry gets a lot of hype, but I prefer Bova’s Bakery. Bricco Panetteria also has fantastic bread if you can find it ;)
Haymarket - Speaking of food, there’s a pretty large open air produce market that happens on weekends. Gotta beat those expensive grocery store produce prices!
Boston Common & Boston Public Garden - The Common is the oldest public park in the United States! My favorite thing to do in this area is bring takeout from restaurants in nearby Chinatown and have a picnic.
Duck Tours - A fun way to get to know the city! They drive you through the streets of Boston and then into the water.
Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall - Pretty touristy, but honestly kind of a rite of passage.
Seaport - Another nice area to walk around, especially if you like the ocean and/or seafood. Also, it’s home to the Boston Tea Party Museum. I’ve never been, but it looks fun—they let you throw tea into the harbor.
Cambridge/Somerville - Please don’t pahk yah cah in Hahvahd Yahd, but feel free to stroll around Harvard Square! Davis Square is nice too
Newbury Street - A classic tbh. This street is where you’ll find the aforementioned Trident, along with the original Newbury Comics and plenty of other stores.
The Esplanade - This path stretches along the Charles River and is great for walking, jogging, and cycling at all times of the year. I once saw a dude on a bicycle take a little detour to ride on the frozen river. Gave me a mini heart attack but boy was it entertaining. There’s also the Hatch Shell, an outdoor concert venue. They’re all the rage these days!
Leaf Peeping - Keep this in mind for a few weeks from now! Within the city, Beacon Hill has some really nice places to walk around and enjoy fall foliage. If you wanna get out of the city for a nature walk, try driving or taking the Orange Line up to Middlesex Fells Reservation.
Well, that’s all I can think of for now! Sorry most of these suggestions were kinda touristy, but the majority of my time living here has been during the pandemic so I haven’t quite had the chance to explore off the beaten path yet. If any other Bostonians have ideas, drop ‘em in the notes!

BUDGETING
dont know if everyone will still want to know on budgeting lol
I don't want to sound like a bitch yk
BUT
I think the most important thing for me was learning to give yourself the freedom to enjoy things like little by little
I used to do this thing where I was uptight for a super long time and then I wpukd splurge huge amounts and for nothing.
I'm not religious either but I truly believe that setting out a little each month/week for charity is great bc it's always comes back in a form that's greater you know.
Pay rise, new job opportunities, idk good things.
Ik it sounds cringe and gross but I think it's worth it !
THE STEPS LMAO
Okay so I always but in 40%-45% like in the bag already savings I mean (this can obvs be adjusted to fit your own needs but if say keeping over 30% is key!)
And work around everything else in the steps below !!!
If I was brave enough I would send pictures of my last year budgeting plan and how I managed to save !! But I'm not 😭😭😭
the first step for me would be to list your monthly income !
Monthly is way easier to work with and easier to adjust in the long run !
Second would be list out things that have to be paid always. So fixed expenses.
I.e rent, MOT, bills, food ( for this I would highly recommend just having a monthly shopping of like say £20-25 - seems un do able but isnt !!! Frozen veggies are your best friend:)) gym membership, spotify, prime all of that.
Third which is super important for me at least would be to set out a like reward bonus for yourself.
( in cash preferably- like so once it's gone it's gone you know- like monthly rewards for yourself - sometimes you use it and sometimes you dont!! )
Fourth - ALWAYS SET AN EXTRA LIL FUND FOR THE UNEXPECTED THINGS!!! ( car crashes, dentist, medicine if your toaster breaks if your fridge breaks !! all of that lovely stuffs 😃)
So when you look at all that infront you- really just scrutinise it.
Like -
How much of that do you really need to spend?
Is there anything you can cut out on ?
This is super important at least to me bc then I see that yh shit - that is crazy I'm spending useless money )
I think that also keeping student loans separate is SUUUUPER SUUUUPER bc it just. Idk if anyone else is like this but seeing how much they expected from me to be able to learn always depressed me so I made a separate folder for that- made it pretty so it didnt look sooo bad lmao ) but I think the biggest part was getting to grips that I had all that to pay back!!!
Then like random things :
Concerts, events, holidays.
Like make sure you have them planned in advance and make separate funds for all of them.
To cater to what they need! Like for a concert- hotel and food money and merch buying and army bomb and a NEW OUTFITTTT lmao)
And yh - I think setting up a teeny amount for charity or to help ppl is always great aswell bc well idk you feel good and it does always come to find you- doesnt have to be a large amount. Maybe even a food box every month or smn cute and sweet like that !!
This is how I did it : ( kind of irrelevant and just abt silly me lmao but maybe itll help(?))
So i used to work night shifts at this horrible packing place ( it was freezing too but the pay was so good! It was £15-18 an hr ( sometimes even more )and I used to work from 11pm-4am 7 days a week like I didnt take a day off until I quit and i did it for 2 years ! That was like 50k but I had a lot of things to pay off and my parents wanted nearly all of it back off of me 😃)
This is also the NOT the job I wanted yk? Like I used to work with a bunch of stinky ass men and it sucked but I had to do it bc well my parents kicked me out bc I was non religious looool.
I was never enough and I just got kicked out yk? ( oh no not my sob story but just to put it into perspective sort of like I was fucking depressed my money was going like wildfire )
So I had to kind of take everything/every opportunity. They expected a lot back from me too in that way like alot of my learning was going to them :/)
From 5-7
I worked at a bakery ! Cooking and baking and having fun! That was the best job I had the pay wasnt all that but it was something and I needed everything I could get ! It wasnt everyday either but so and so.
I also am bilingual so that way I was able to get a job as a teacher in a daytime school teaching which I did voluntarily! For the first year !
( I had this routine for 2 years!!)
So like I was getting an okay amount from these jobs but god heavens I was spending so unnecessary.
Like a high price for a shit apartment where I would have to pay for things to get fixed to and that was really expensive.
My parents also took alot first year earnings and that's when I was like well shit I have nothing I really need to like get my shit together yk?
There was student loan (- I dont want to like envoke sympathy bc of all this I just wanna like say that my money was kind of slipping away yk I feel like I'm being annoying 😭😭😭 ) - and just a whole lot of wasting on food ( my biggest expenditure- at the time I was struggling with binge eating and bulimia so 🙃🙃 yh )
Dumb shit off amazon, and like just crap you know
Also car petrol and mot and car stuff. and bus and train fares just money can go so easily.
It was just super super tiring to have juggle all these balls at once but when I got the hang of it like doing all those steps I felt more free and more aware of myself and I was able to enjoy while still getting yk the most out of what I do.
I work as a translater/teacher now so the pay is good and like using these steps is how I got the most out of myself
Uh idk If this even makes sense anymore and I'm sorry if come off as bitch too
I don't mean to or come with a sob story
I just think its important to like realise that no matter what and who in your life demands things from you - you always have to choose to look after yourself first- how you choose too look after yourself is ultimately how you choose to look after others too ! Take good care of yourself - give yourself a clearer mind and you'll be able to see a bigger picture- outside of the one built for you !!
If your struggling with other issues - mental health too it can help bring clarity to that too ! Bc it's some sort of semblance.
Gosh I feel gross what if you have to read all of this 😭😭😭
I hope it helps you ♡♡
Budgeting is really important bc we need to buy houses!!
Need property!!!
Start our own businesses !!
Become our own bosses !
It's just super important to know your expenses you can know yourself better too !
And you can be more mature and more self aware
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Gosh I really ate your ear off with this one
for everyone wondering about our bestie w 50k savings: this is her story !!

How much did you pay for your ticket if you don't mind me asking? And what exactly happens at the concert, before it and is there any meet and greet later? With like VIP passes? Are you allowed food and snacks? Sorry for too many questions!!
Well at the last tour the most expensive tickets with the VIP didn’t come with an exclusive meet and greet, but that could change!! I know those tickets had front row or first ten row seating depending on what you pay plus some back stage thingy (but I don’t believe Harry was mentioned to be there). I payed $200 for two tickets, but I don’t believe they were that price on ticket master, it just redirected me to the venue and that was the price they gave me (for high up seats too!! :/). But again I don’t think that was Harry’s price. Usually venues prefer you buy their food so you’d have to ask about the food and snacks, anon.
Before the concert someone will just scan your ticket once you reach your turn in the line, and you can also buy merch and usually food as well. During the concert last time there was an opening act for about an hour and H didn’t come out until about 9 when it began at 8 (my times may be wrong, not sure). You’ll see people setting everything up for him!!
Just remember things can change and it’s all dependent on the venue you’re going to!! Also make sure to buy tickets from a reputable place, even if the price is a bit more, and never feel bad if at the time you’re not able to afford the tickets. I went last time but it’s very possible this time around I won’t be able to go.

10 gift ideas that don't take up any space

10 gift ideas that don't take up any space
Maybe your brother hates clutter, or your best friend lives in a shoebox-size city apartment. Or maybe your New Age aunt has announced that she is eschewing materialism and won’t accept physical gifts this year. When you’re shopping for recipients like these, you can’t go wrong with a present that takes up zero square feet. Instead, focus on giving experiences instead of stuff. And if the experience isn’t too pricy, maybe you can come along too.
Excluding physical vouchers or cards, this list includes no permanent objects or gift cards intended to purchase permanent physical objects. Even with that restriction, we found 10 gift ideas that should suit a range of tastes.
Travel can reduce stress, depression, and even heart attack risk (really!) while increasing satisfaction and creativity. But even if you’re taking a simple weekend trip, the expenses can add up. Subsidize someone’s journey by helping cover these costs. Most airlines let you purchase gift cards that can go toward a plane ticket, and for ground-based travelers, you can buy cards for Amtrak or certificates for specific car-rental services. If you’d prefer to put your contribution toward staying somewhere nice, try a gift card for Airbnb, Hotels.com, or the recipient’s favorite hotel chain. Just make sure that they tag you in any Instagram photos from the trip.
Massages and other spa treatments simply make you feel better. In fact, studies show that even mice enjoy receiving massages. This year, buy your frazzled friend a gift certificate for a massage or splurge on a spa day for both of you. Working with a budget? You can pull off a DIY spa experience with some homemade bath bombs.
We all make New Years resolutions to eat better and exercise more—but science shows that we’re unlikely to keep them. And it’s way more pleasant to hit a nice gym than a cheap one. Help your friend keep those resolutions by paying for a couple months of a swanky gym membership. If a full membership’s price tag is too steep, you can at least purchase a few exercise classes. And if your friend needs more motivation, sign yourself up for the same classes so you can hang out while you sweat it out.
There’s something magical about walking through a museum. The problem is, unless you live near a free institution, those admission fees can add up. Luckily, a membership will take care of the charges. Whether your friends prefer to stare at oil paintings or dinosaur bones, you can probably figure out which nearby museums are their favorites. If the membership fee is too pricey, buy a single admission ticket or write an IOU for a visit.
Rather than a year’s worth of museum access, your friend may prefer a one-day experience. For the bold, an outdoor adventure should fit the bill. After all, a spike of excitement-induced adrenaline once in a while can better prepare the body to deal with everyday stresses. Plus, it puts your senses on high alert and may be able to reduce pain and even prime your immune system. Make it happen with a gift certificate for skydiving, bungee-jumping, or even playing with giant construction equipment in an extreme sandbox. Bonus points for giving a group activity, such as a paintball session: Now it’s a gift for you, too.
Not everyone loves spending time outdoors. So plan a special indoor excursion for your gift recipient, one she would never buy for herself. For an animal lover, buy admission to an aquarium; for a theater buff, get your hands on tickets to a play; for a music lover, book amazing concert seats. Alternatively, let your friend take herself out: Free up her busy schedule with an offer to watch her kids or pets.
Speaking of house-sitting, one of the most useful gifts you can give—and also one of the most cost-effective—is helping around the home. To be clear: This isn’t a cutesy “I will clear up after 1 dinner” IOU. For max effectiveness (and gratitude), you need to promise something that will actually save the recipient time and effort. Giving the gift of time could actually make its recipient happier than a physical present would. So if you intend to clean, then clean the entire house. Or take care of a nagging chore that the giftee really means to tackle, but might not get done without your aid: Washing windows, repairing nail-holes, clearing gutters, shampooing carpets, or even painting a room.
And then there’s food. If you’re comfortable in the kitchen, cook (and clean up after!) a warm, colorful meal or, for someone with a sweet tooth, bake a cake or pie. If you can burn a dish just by looking at it, then cover the cost of a restaurant visit or buy some pastries from a bakery. For the over-21 crowd, don’t rule out alcoholic beverages. You can pick up a nice microbrew or bottle of wine, or make your own beer.
We all like to veg out in front of a screen or two. But between Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube Red, Amazon Prime, and premium cable services like HBO Now, all those subscriptions can sap your wallet. Help a fellow viewer by covering just one of these streaming subscriptions, even if it’s only for a couple months. For music lovers, skip the video streaming and get a subscription to Spotify. Or if your friend prefers to watch a big screen, pony up for a few months of MoviePass.
This item won’t work for every giftee, but if your friend or relative feels passionately about a cause—speaking up for science, fighting breast cancer or ALS, helping the homeless—then consider donating to a relevant organization in his or her name. You’ll be giving a thoughtful gift, reducing waste, and supporting a good cause all at once. And after all that sweetness and light, your friend had better buy you an awesome gift in return.
