Okay as the girl who is one of the biggest fans of nerdcore (the community of people making rap music about video games and anime) I have got to explain why I agree with this post.
I'm going to say the subtext that's been on this post for a while: The 'rap is just violence and sex and drugs and wealth' stereotype is racism. Specifically, it's a sympton of the belief that violence/drugs/sex/money is all black people do/think about. There is no deep meaning in rap, it's all posturing and masculine bravado, as is there no deep meaning in black culture, etc. It's probably an unconscious belief, sure, but it's there.
Nerdcore has been a very white medium for most of it's history, up until the past six years. And even then, it's easy to be a fan of nerdcore and not listen to a single black artist. And that's the deciding factor here, because you can list all the black nerdcore artists you want, I know and love them, but they are not required to listen to to be a fan of the genre. White people can insulate themselves from black art in this genre. That is not the case with other mediums of hip-hop.
Nerdcore often has the same keyfabe masculine bravado that talks about being the best through violence, the same thing that white people shudder about in hip-hop. The difference is that nerdcore talks about violence within video games, while some hip-hop talks about real life violence. (Yes, there are nerdcore artists who don't do this, I'm talking about norms rather than a rule)
Or is the real difference that it's white people saying it this time? White people often unconsciously afford only themselves the courtesy of having their art be deep and moving, whereas in their eyes black people's art is base and vulgar. Listening to black artists and taking them seriously is not something a lot of white people do.
So, I encourage nerdcore fans to think about why they like nerdcore and not other forms of hip-hop. if it's a problem with the instrumentals not being as prominent as the bars, or the lack of lyrical miracle style phrasing, you can find black artists who do those things! You just have to look.
I also have to shout out Shao Dow as a black nerdcore artist because he has the most electrifying stage presence I've ever seen and bars to match. Nerdcore ppl if you haven't listened to him pls pls pls do it
fuck killing a victorian child by making them listen to hyperpop all you gotta do is make a white tumblr user listen to rap
