I have my bones to pick with Soule's writing sometimes, but there's always the feeling of the Jedi Order feeling like home and a community that binds its members together when in his work
#when I first read his Avar#that was the first time I'd seen *light side* powers be this badass and aspirational totally OP thing#bc for so much of canon it's that the dark side is quick and easy and so much more powerful#(and in some of its sloppier canon/fanon interpretations can be used in a situation with little consequence and a mea culpa)#but Avar connecting Jedi through her song and having that all draw them together? Badass as shit while also maintaining the Light Side Vibe#like I guess I had it in my head for a while but it really clicked when I read how he wrote Avar#it's that and it's how Bell and Loden are a calm assuring presence and on the same wavelength#and conversely in dark lord of the sith#granted it's a pretty common theme in Vader works now#but before I read Soule's Vader I really only knew Vader-as-power-fantasy#but Soule's Vader is undeniably a miserable isolated and hurting bastard#super powerful. kills people wherever he goes and wins duels effortlessly#but his daily choice to turn to the dark leaves him empty#ditto the inquisitors—facades of power and the illusion of camaraderie which can be shattered at any time by anyone#the dichotomy of the dark getting someone cheap/limited power and the light being hard but very rewarding/powerful shines in his writing
