1) How old were you when you first starting writing fan-fiction?

I think I had just turned 22, I was fresh out of undergrad and wanted a way to keep my writing and editing skills sharp while I job hunted.

2) Do you prefer writing OC’s or reader inserts? Explain your answer.

I think I’ve only written reader inserts. I usually leave their physical attributes nondescript but I definitely create intense personalities to all my reader inserts. I think I do this because I want my readers to imagine themselves as these strong, kickass females, who are also vulnerable, but have weak spots, the same way all of us do. I put a lot of effort into creating strong female characters that still have flaws, no Mary Sues for me!

3) What is your favorite genre to write for?

I love writing Marvel. I pretty much only write Marvel, predominantly Canon because I have so much comic book knowledge, plus I love writing fight scenes.

4) If you had to delete one of your stories and never speak of it again, which would it be and why?

Oh lord, probably Compensation and Consequences, its just a small little one shot that I did as a request but its a Game of Thrones AU. It definitely has some problematic choices in it, I totally shoe horned the sex and attraction into it. Overall it’s just trash.

5) When is your preferred time to write?

I always find myself writing at 1am or onwards. A lot of the time I’ll just knuckle down around 1am and do what I call a writing sprint, where I’ll write all the new parts for whatever stories I’m working on and get them all done in one night, then edit the next day and start queuing them up.

6) Where do you take your inspiration from?

This is so embarrassing but I get most inspired by listening to musical soundtracks. There are a couple of my stories that have direct song quotes from Waitress and Heathers. Musicals are so rich and overdramatic, they have always been a big part of my emotional development. So whenever inspiration strikes I have a whole playlist of angst songs or love songs from various musicals that I just play in the background on repeat and I will shamelessly pull lines directly from them.

7) In your Divided series, what’s your favorite scene that you wrote?

Ooo that’s such a tough one, honestly that whole series is just one of my absolute favorites. But if I had to choose, I think the chase scene in Bucharest. It’s so dynamic and there is so much happening and I honestly watched that scene frame by frame for a week and worked this original character into it step by step.

8) Have you ever amended a story due to criticisms you’ve received after posting it?

I’ve never changed the story itself. A couple times I’ve changed the formatting at peoples suggestions. I didn’t chunk my paragraphs well when I first started, but someone suggested I break it up more so I did. It’s little changes like that, but I would never change what I write because someone dislikes it. My writing is for me, I’m just sharing it with others for fun.

9) Who is your favorite character to write for? Why?

Bucky. Absolutely Bucky. Though I am warming up to Steve. He has such dimension to him, he’s been a favorite of mine ever since I started reading comic books. His story is so sad and in-depth and there has always been room for new details and development in every reboot. He’s such a dynamic character and that makes him such a treat to write.

10) Who is your least favorite character to write for? Why?

Hahaha I guess Thor, but I actively avoid writing him cause his tone is so hard to get right without over doing it, so I’m not sure if he counts. Tony is tough too, cause you want to be quippy and clever without being over the top, and that’s a very fine line.

11) How did you come up with the title for the Divided series?

I am a big fan of one word titles, maybe I am just on the Disney train with Tangled, Brave, Frozen, etc. I love it when one word can encapsulate what the series is about and also when the word has more weight than just it’s basic meaning. Aftershocks, my first series, is a good example of this. The main character has suffered from shock torture and has a lot of scars and residual issues from it, but Aftershocks is also a psych term sometimes used to refer to the radiating effects of PTSD on the victim and those around them. Divided was the same way, it encapsulated both the theme of Civil War which is the changing and division of Tony and Steve’s relationship and also shows how Bucky and Steve, though still perceived as a unit are Divided now by not only their different experiences but their competition for the same woman.

12) How did you come up with the idea for Divided series?

I’m honestly not entirely sure. I had this basic idea of working a reader into Bucky’s story in Civil War, but the original plan didn’t have Steve involved at all and definitely wasn’t on the level that Divided eventually became. Once I decided that the reader would start with Steve, it immediately raised the stakes of the whole story and this character of The Scorpion began to take shape. After that, the whole thing got pretty easy, she was a fully formed character and a lot of what happened in Divided was just me asking myself what choices this character would make and how the surrounding characters would honestly respond. I try really hard to just develop my characters thoroughly and then let them make honest choices, I think that’s the best way to keep a story real and authentic.

13) Do you have any abandoned WIP’s? What made you abandon them?

Oh yes, my hidden shame, and it haunts me. It’s called Royal Flush, and it currently has 3 parts. It’s a T’Challa fic and a lot of people have found it and liked it and I feel so guilty that it hasn’t gone anywhere in a year. Honestly, this mess up is totally on me. I never draft out my stories, and I know I should, I usually just make it up as I got along and sometimes I just hit a blockade with where it’s going to go. I definitely want to finish that fic, but just have no idea how, so if anyone has any ideas or suggestions, throw them my way!

14) Are there any stories that you’ve written that you’d really love to do a sequel to?

I’m going to say Divided, just because it is one of my favorites and I so deeply love Scorpion as a character. Her struggle in Divided was so hard and I hate to leave her there just heartbroken. I have drafted a couple followups for that story, but after how Infinity War ended, I feel like it would just be cruel to put her through losing Bucky all over again.

15) Are there any stories that you wished you’d ended differently?

I am happy to say that there are none that I would do differently. I’m extremely content in how they all ended.

16) Tell me about another writer(s) who you admire? What is it about them that you admire?

I mean first and foremost, I have to talk about @imhereforbvcky, she was my first real friend on here. We started talking when I was writing Aftershocks and I eventually convinced her to take a crack at writing herself and she finally did and wrote this incredible fic, I’ll Be Good. It honestly is so amazing! Mee specializes in the fem fatale, she writes these incredible badasses that are all dark and twisty, I honestly don’t know how she makes violence so elegant, but she does.

@denialanderror is another one, her Melodies series is so perfect and lovely, she gets this beautiful vulnerability to Bucky that just attacks my heart. It’s such a wonderful change of pace from the way that I write and I always reread it whenever I need to be reminded of the soft parts in his personhood. I honestly love it so much and recommend it to everyone. Plus she is an amazing friend and such a fun person to send memes back and forth with.

Finally @bitsandbobsandstuff just full on destroyed me as a person with Safe With Me. That story honestly puts everything I’ve ever written to shame, her deep understanding of Bucky as a character is just like nothing else I’ve ever read. It’s such an in-depth story with an incredible slow burn, if you haven’t read it yet, you are missing out.

17) Do you have a story that you look back on and cringe when you reread it?

I cringe a little bit with Aftershocks, my first series, but I also see a lot of value in it. Whenever I get stuck or think my writing isn’t good enough, I reread it and remind myself how far I have come as a writer, and that always helps to get me back on track.

18) Do you prefer listening to music when you’re writing or do you need silence?

Both, sometimes I just have the same song playing on repeat in the background, other times I need complete silence cause the monologue in my head is flowing so quickly. I definitely edit in silence, I cannot hear my tone or catch my mistakes when rereading if I don’t have silence.

19) Have you ever cried whilst writing a story?

Hahaha I have, I cried while writing a couple parts of Divided, that story is very close to my heart cause the love triangle in it is unfortunately something that happened to me, and I accidentally hurt someone I cared for a lot.

20) Which part of your Divided series fic was the hardest to write?

Hahaha probably the one or two sex scenes I snuck into it hahaha. It was just not a story that really leant itself to smut. Like you’re not going to be running for your life, camping out with fellow teammates and just quietly have a fuck in the dirt. So squeezing those sex scenes in there always felt a bit funny to me, but I think in the long run they both fit and were put in at appropriate times.

21) Do you make a general outline for your stories or do you just go with the flow?

I probably should make an outline but I always just go with the flow, I honestly have no idea where my stories are going till they get there. But I do reread my story whenever I get stuck so that way I can tie things back in or close up lose ends.

22) What is something you wished you’d known before you started posting fan-fiction?

To breakup my paragraphs and use the keep reading button hahaha

23) Do you have a story that you feel doesn’t get as much love as you’d like?

I am currently feeling that way about a story I just started called Siren’s Soldier, so I paused it for a little bit to see if it was worth continuing but it recently got a bunch of love while I was in Italy so it might be time to come back to it.

24) In contrast to 23 is there a story which gets lots of love which you kinda eye roll at?

Nothing that I’ve written to be honest. There are a couple of exceptionally problematic stories that have an absurd amount of notes and that bums me out, just because I don’t like seeing those kind of relationships idolized or modeled. To clarify, the issue I have is that these kind of stories have a lot of gas lighting, self harm, non consensual sex, and sometimes even violent relationship dynamics. I work very hard to make sure that my characters model healthy relationship habits and positive communication because we need to stop romanticizing rape and abuse in relationships, so it bugs me when fics that do that are popular.

25) Are any of your characters based on real people?

I model my readers off of specific parts on my own personality. I essentially take one side of myself and just exacerbate it into a whole character. I am a very independent person and a feminist myself so a lot of my female characters have those similar qualities of independence and confidence. Especially when doing reader inserts, you want to make the character someone that you yourself want to be, your alter ego, someone to escape to. That’s why I’ll let my characters, be selfish or shitty communicators but I’ll never let them get down on themselves, we do enough of that in our real lives, lets not do it in our fantasy lives.

26) What’s the biggest compliment you’ve gotten?

Hmmm this is a hard one, @imhereforbvcky sent me a very disarming compliment the other day that totally moved me to tears. But most of the ones that really hit me are when people recognize the amount of effort that goes into everything, or when they message me to talk about my story and see all the little easter eggs I’ve tossed into the early chapters. I also live for every reblog you’ve ever done, they always make me feel so loved and valued, I’ve honestly have gone back and reread your reblogs when I’m feeling down on my writing and they always pick me back up. It takes a lot of time to create a world and characters and tie everything together in one neat story and having that recognized always makes my heart sing!

27) What’s the harshest criticism you’ve gotten?

I haven’t really gotten a lot of harsh criticism, I’ve gotten bullshit anonymous messages that are just mean, but no real criticism. I’ve gotten constructive criticism but a lot of that has been kind and helpful so I don’t take that personally at all.

28) Do you share your story ideas with anyone else or do you keep them close to your chest?

@imhereforbvcky and @denialanderror and I have a group chat on instagram so whenever I’m particularly jazzed about something I drop the premise into that chat and get their feedback but most of my big twists or turns I keep close to my chest so that way they can be a surprise to everyone.

29) Do people know you write fan-fiction? In my real life?

Some people. My best friend knows but she’s never read it. My boyfriend knows and sometimes reads the smut I write and will use it against me in bed. He frequently likes to quote some of my own lines to me, he thinks its funny, I don’t find it as amusing. But he is a lot of my inspiration for writing positive relationship dynamics, we work really hard at having a healthy, communicative relationship and that manifests in my writing frequently.

30) What’s you favorite minor character you’ve written?

I really like Om, this character I wrote for Siren’s Soldier, they are non binary and do not have a set gender identity so that was fun to play with and extrapolate on, especially because their non-binary personality had a lot to do with their power so that was really cool to explore to explore.

31) What spurs you on during the writing process?

I generally get really excited when things are free flowing so I guess I spur myself on. I take a lot of joy and pleasure in the things I write and feel my stomach twist when I’m writing suspenseful parts, so a lot of it is just my own enjoyment.

32) What’s your favorite trope to write?

I’m a sucker for the slow burn, so I love writing the enemies become lovers trope. Usually I don’t actually start them as real enemies, but they never start close or as friends. I’m not a big fan of the falling in love with my best friend trope, as I have a bunch of guy friends that I have never once had an urge to fall in love with haha.

33) Can you remember the first fic you read? What was it about?

Oh god, I honestly can’t. I wish I could. I didn’t start reading fanfic until after Civil War came out and I graduated from college. I remember being in a place where I was just disenchanted with porn but I was super into marvel so I went looking for marvel smut on the internet and found the Bucky smut rabbit hole. I remember reading a lot of different stories and never finding exactly what I wanted and also finding a lot of problematic sexual relationships. At that time I was working as a sex education teacher and I remember thinking that I could write better smut with healthier relationship dynamics, and I did. That’s how it all started.

34) If you could write only angst, fluff or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?

Ooooh blimey, this is impossible because I write a combination of all three most times. I guess I would have to say angst, causing it doesn’t get boring so easily. There are so many angst tropes to explore and play with. So yes, definitely angst.

Meditation: Who do you love and cherish the most? God did not intend for us to be alone, but to be with others. He gives us many opportunities for developing relationships with family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Why does Jesus seem to ignore his own relatives when they pressed to see him? His love and respect for his mother and his relatives is unquestionable. Jesus never lost an opportunity to teach his disciples a spiritual lesson and truth about the kingdom of God. On this occasion when many gathered to hear Jesus he pointed to another higher reality of relationships, namely our relationship with God and with those who belong to God.

God offers the greatest of relationships

What is the essence of being a Christian? It is certainly more than doctrine, precepts, and commandments. It is first and foremost a relationship - a relationship of trust, affection, commitment, loyalty, faithfulness, kindness, thoughtfulness, compassion, mercy, helpfulness, encouragement, support, strength, protection, and so many other qualities that bind people together in mutual love and unity. God offers us the greatest of relationships - union of heart, mind, and spirit with himself, the very author and source of love (1 John 4:8,16).

God's love never fails, never forgets, never compromises, never lies, never lets us down nor disappoints us. His love is consistent, unwavering, unconditional, unrelenting and unstoppable. There is no end to his love. Nothing in this world can make him leave us, ignore us, or withhold from us his merciful love and care (Romans 8:31-39). He will love us no matter what. It is his nature to love. That is why he created us - to be united with him and to share in his love (1 John 3:1).

God is a trinity of divine persons - one in being with the eternal Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and a community of undivided love. God made us in his image and likeness (Genesis 1:26,27) to be a people who are free to choose what is good, loving, and just and to reject whatever is false and contrary to his love and righteousness (moral goodness). That is why Jesus challenged his followers, and even his own earthly relatives, to recognize that God is the true source of all relationships. God wants all of our relationships to be rooted in his love and goodness.

The heavenly Father's offer of friendship and adoption

Jesus Christ is God's love incarnate - God's love made visible in human flesh (1 John 4:9-10). That is why Jesus describes himself as the good shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep and the shepherd who seeks out the sheep who have strayed and lost their way. God is like the father who yearns for his prodigal son to return home and then throws a great party for his son when he has a change of heart and comes back (Luke 15:11-32).

Jesus offered up his life on the cross for our sake, so that we could be forgiven and restored to unity and friendship with God. It is through Jesus that we become the adopted children of God - his own sons and daughters. That is why Jesus told his disciples that they would have many new friends and family relationships in his kingdom. Whoever does the will of God is a friend of God and a member of his family - his sons and daughters who have been ransomed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ.

Our brothers and sisters redeemed in the blood of Christ

An early Christian martyr once said that "a Christian's only relatives are the saints" - namely those who have been redeemed by the blood of Christ and adopted as sons and daughters of God. Those who have been baptized into Jesus Christ and who live as his disciples enter into a new family, a family of "saints" here on earth and in heaven. Jesus changes the order of relationships and shows that true kinship is not just a matter of flesh and blood.

Our adoption as sons and daughters of God transforms all of our relationships and requires a new order of loyalty to God first and to his kingdom of righteousness and peace. Do you want to grow in love and friendship? Allow God's Holy Spirit to transform your heart, mind, and will to enable you to love freely and generously as he loves.

"Heavenly Father, you bless us with many relationships and you invite us into the community of your sons and daughters who have been redeemed by your son, Jesus Christ. Help me to love my neighbor with charity, kindness, compassion, and mercy, just as you have loved me. In all of my relationships, and in all that I do and say, may I always seek to bring you honor and glory."

HAND-SHAKE

“Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord swept the sea with a strong east wind throughout the night and so turned it into dry land.” —Exodus 14:21

After the Israelites had crossed the sea and the Lord had bogged the Egyptians’ chariot wheels in the midst of the sea, Moses again “stretched out his hand over the sea, and at dawn the sea flowed back to its normal depth” (Ex 14:27). This drowned the Egyptian army.

When Moses stretched out his hand, he did miracles. However, when Jesus extended His hands (Mt 12:49), He did even greater things. Jesus extended His hands to us, His disciples, and said: “There are My mother and My brothers. Whoever does the will of My heavenly Father is brother and sister and mother to Me” (Mt 12:50). When Jesus extended His hands, He told us, who obey His Father’s will, that we are His brothers, sisters, and mothers. We are members of God’s family. We have a personal, intimate relationship with Jesus, Son of God, God Himself, second Person of the Trinity.

Stretch out your hand to the extended, nail-scarred hands of Jesus. Give Jesus a hand, even if that means having nail-scarred hands yourself. Be more than a Moses (see Mt 11:11). Be a member of God’s family.

Prayer:  Father, when I receive Holy Communion, may I consecrate my hands to You.

Promise:  “I will sing to the Lord, for He is gloriously triumphant.” —Ex 15:1

Fire Emblem Three Houses Points: 4.25/5 Status: no walkthrough used (only for the lost objects) played through in approximately 70 hours (2/4 routes)

I've been a big fan of the franchise ever since the first GBA game came out here in Germany. Since then I've been buying each game, playing it through rather quickly before hoping for a new one thus I have been waiting for Three Houses for quite a while and was very excited to get my hands on a copy. Three Houses grants you the biggest freedom of any FE game. It was released in July 26, 2019 and I've played through 2 of 4 routes, since I am not much of an Edelgard fan. It took 12 years for Fire Emblem to be back on a console rather than a handheld and it's undeniably one of my favourite games in 2019.

Artwork/Design FE has always features an anime style and Three Houses is no different, but in comparison to the other games of the franchise I must say, that Three Houses looks very different, a very unique and distinctive style that can easily be adapted. FE games always feature many many units and there will easily be one character that catches your attention or heart. Every character in FE looks damn amazing and is nicely put into motions during the fights.

The Monastery is a beautiful and large place. At first it was almost too much, but once you know where everything is, you'll learn to appreciate the sight of the huge dining hall, the market place, the gardening house. Everything has been designed with love and detail. The cutscenes are also very beautifully animated and out into action, but there are very very few. I would have loved to see more of that.

Not so impressive are the battlefields of course, but it's a tactical game, so I can't complain. As for the support conversations:the backgrounds are horrible. They're always generic pictures, not even in 3D.

Story/Combat system Three Houses delivers a massive, strong, sharp and interesting plot and this in various ways, routes! You take on the role of either a male or female mercenary named Byleth who joins Garreg Mach Monastery as a professor. You'll be forced to join a house: Black Eagles with charismatic strong leader Edelgard, the Blue Lions led by the sweet blond prince Dimitri or the Golden Deers with (damn attractive and smart) Claude as their leader. I firstly chose Claude and for my 2nd playthrough I chose Dimitri, because both leaders appealed to me and the characters that interested me could always be recruited. Needless to say the story changes a great deal due to the house you choose.

Fire Emblem is first and foremost a game about war, about losses, sacrifices, wins and success. About life and death, so making your decision will be one that changes history. That will lead your house to success, which means that the other houses will inevitably not be your best friends in the latter part of the game, because it is divided into two parts: pre and post time skip. It's a highly political game, close to reality despite it many fantasy elements. Revealing even the tiniest bit of plot would be a spoiler and hence I won't say more.

FE lives due to its strong characters, which all let you take part in their life and this becomes even more apparent in Three Houses. Byleth may just be the most mysterious character overall, but everyone has a role and a background which will definitely pull you in and you are the professor, their teacher, the one to take care of them, to lead them through the battle. It would be a lie to say, I didn't feel responsible to have them all survive. You can choose between different modes, depending on how hard or how easy the game should be for you. I chose the normal mode, which also eventually led me to use the divine puls, a method to turn back time and go back a few turns.

Most of the time will be spent at Garreg Mach though: You will be teaching your students! And due to that there is so so so much to do. It's overwhelming at first, but once you run through the same facility a 3rd time, it's easy to maneuver. There's a very good map and apart from that you'll be: gardening, fishing, bringing back lost objects, having tea time and dinners with your students, you can make them sing and cook with them. On the menu you can choose classes, upgrade abilities, buy weapons and items, listen to support conversations, watch your students take part in events etc. Three Houses grants you the biggest kind of freedom. While your students have preferences and strength and weaknesses, you can still raise them in the way you want. It's not always the most logical thing to hand someone a sword when they have an obvious interest in magic though!

But you as a teacher can grow as well! With a higher rank you'll be able to do many more activities in the Monastery and hence – since you can transfer certain achievements to your 2nd playthrough – I chose to keep my teacher rank.

Needless to say: The Combat system is a strategical one, where you'll be moving your units on the battlefield to slay new fiends such as the demonic beasts or other soldiers. The handling is extremely easy and very well arranged. The battle is turn based and a few new additions have been made such as letting your units have their own battalions. I never had any complaints about the original system, so I won't start here.

I love the fact, that there are different outcomes and your decision brings about change. Three Houses was easily one of the best games in 2019, absolutely fabulous.

Meditation: Do you want to be on fire for God? Jesus shocked his disciples when he declared that he would cast fire and cause division rather than peace upon the earth. What kind of fire did Jesus have in mind here?

The fire of God's purifying love and cleansing word

The image of fire in biblical times was often associated with God and with his action in the world and in the lives of his people. God sometimes manifested his presence by use of fire, such as God's revelation to Moses through the burning bush in the wilderness which was not consumed by the flames (Exodus 3:2). God assured the Hebrew people of his continual presence, guidance, and protection for them through the wilderness for forty years with the pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day (Exodus 13:21-22). The prophet Elijah called down fire from heaven to reveal God's presence and power and to purify the people of false idols (1 Kings 18:36-39). The image of fire was also used as a sign of God's glory (Ezekiel 1:4, 13) and holiness (Deuteronomy 4:24), his protective presence (2 Kings 6:17), and his righteous judgment (Zechariah 13:9) and holy wrath against sin (Isaiah 66:15-16).

Fire is also a sign and symbol of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist said that Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire (Matthew 3:11-12 and Luke 3:16-17). When the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the disciples at Pentecost "tongues of fire" appeared above their heads (Acts 2:3). We can see from both the Old and New Testament Scriptures that God's fire purifies and cleanses to make us clean (sins washed away) and holy (fit to offer him acceptable praise and worship), and it inspires a reverent fear (awe in God's presence) and respect (obeying and giving God his due) for God and for his holy word.

Loyalty unites - division separates

Why did Jesus link fire from heaven with costly division on the earth? Did he expect his followers to take his statement of "father against son and son against father" and "mother against daughter and daughter against mother" literally? Or was he intentionally using a figure of speech to emphasize the choice and cost of following him above all else? Jesus used a typical Hebrew hyperbole (a figure of speech which uses strong language and exaggeration for emphasis) to drive home an important lesson. We often do the same when we want to emphasize something very strongly. Jesus' hyperbole, however, did contain a real warning that the Gospel message does have serious consequences for our lives.

When Jesus spoke about division within families he likely had in mind the prophecy of Micah: a man's enemies are the men of his own household (Micah 7:6). The essence of Christianity is loyalty to Jesus Christ - the Son of God and Savior of the world - a loyalty that takes precedence over every other relationship. The love of God compels us to choose who will be first in our lives. To place any relationship (or anything else) above God is a form of idolatry.

Who do you love first and foremost?

Jesus challenges his disciples to examine who they love first and foremost. A true disciple loves God above all else and is willing to forsake all for Jesus Christ. Jesus insists that his disciples give him the loyalty which is only due to God, a loyalty which is higher than spouse or kin. It is possible that family and friends can become our enemies if the thought of them keeps us from doing what we know God wants us to do. Does the love of Jesus Christ compel you to put God first in all you do (2 Corinthians 5:14)?

The Gospel message is good news for those who seek pardon, peace, and the abundant life which God offers us through his Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus offers true freedom to those who believe in him - freedom from slavery to sin, Satan, and the oppressive forces of hatred and evil that can destroy body, mind, and spirit. Do you listen to the voice of your Savior and trust in his word? Commit your ways to him, obey his word, and you will find true peace, joy, and happiness in the Lord your God.

"Lord Jesus, may the fire of your love consume me and transform my life that I may truly desire nothing more than life with you. Fill me with the power of your Holy Spirit that I may always seek to please you and do your will."

ALL IN THE FAMILY

“I kneel before the Father from Whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name; and I pray.” —Ephesians 3:14-16

Today’s first reading is possibly the greatest family prayer ever. It teaches us that, when we pray for our family and others, we should first of all pray for “gifts in keeping with the riches of His glory” (Eph 3:16). Family life is humanly impossible. We must admit this and then pray for supernatural gifts from God.

The demands of family life are overwhelming. The only way we will survive is by asking for and receiving inward strength “through the working of His Spirit” (Eph 3:16). We need not only divine gifts and inward strength, but we need God Himself to reside in our family (Eph 3:17). We bring this about by inviting Jesus into our hearts through faith (Eph 3:17). With God actually living in our family, love can now be the root and foundation of our family life (Eph 3:17), for God is Love (1 Jn 4:16). Because “love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Pt 4:8) and “never fails” (1 Cor 13:8), our families will be holy families, built up in love (Eph 4:16).

This may seem impossible to you, but God’s “power now at work in us can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine” (Eph 3:20). So start praying the family prayer in Ephesians 3:16-17. Keep praying and obeying. Your family will be so transformed that, when you have a family reunion in heaven soon, not one family member will be missing.

Prayer:  Father, may my family “grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ’s love, and experience this love” (Eph 3:18-19).

Promise:  “I have come to light a fire on the earth. How I wish the blaze were ignited!” —Lk 12:49

What drew you to this character? | firstly, when i decided to write another application, i thought it was about time to go through characters linked to one of the mobs. though i love neutral characters with all my heart, there is a different demeanor to a character who is tied to any of the three mobs within verona. and thus, i was torn between three different characters in each of of the three mobs; and obviously, brielle tugged a little harder than most. which is indicative of who she is, really. brielle has this beautiful strength to her that is difficult to ignore. she is someone who is undoubtedly forging her own path, no matter how many times life grabs her at the ankles to cause her collapse. she is someone who is nipping at the bit for a chance to be remembered, and yet refuses to forget why she is doing so. she burns so brightly in her passion and determination, steadying her own flames or fueling them when necessary. she is linked to the spades, to others within the city, yet she will always belong to herself, and she doesn’t hesitate in throwing a wry smile and reminding people of that fact. she is someone that, in the end, i would love to explore if i earn the chance!

What is a future plot idea you have in mind for the character?

( plan i ) each and every one of the spades are on different levels compared to her. it was bound to occur, with her a sleeper agent and them unifying miles and miles away. she isn’t exactly a loner among them per se, but she doesn’t seek them for companionship first and foremost. she was important as she worked for the spades undercover, and yet, now that they are in verona, she cannot help but feel frustrated at the loss of power she once held. a part of her is glad there are more spades to cover the the vast size of the city; another is seething at the lost opportunities. the desire to succeed and rise through the ranks is something she hopes happens sooner rather than later, as irrational as that is. how will she build further relationships with those she is meant to work with? there is alva, the gentle soul with a killer’s eye; calina with her foreboding presence and calculating gaze; faron, with a charm she remembers and a demeanor that she never expected. will her independence, her own damn pride, keep her from developing the vital relationships needed in the mobs of verona? or will they be the first domino to her downfall within the group?

( plan ii ) there is a priest bound to God, and a being who regards themself as one. two different figures who have struck a match and lit a wall of flames onto her path. there is a pull to one, perhaps because of the gratitude she harbors toward him saving her when he didn’t have to ( though she wonders, if he had known she was a spade, what he would have done ).  and perhaps it’s a touch of curiosity and understanding that has her returning to him again and again. then there is an avoidance of the other, exactly because of the unexplained offense she has caused. and perhaps a shred of doubt that whatever she’s done — whatever they believe she will do — will cause her unraveling. how will either of them affect her in her life? will she become close to hea and distant with hugo in a strange twist? or will hea strike her down as they have done countless others, denying her a chance of another talk with hugo? these two, while not her closest relationships, have direct cause and effect on her life. will either wall of flames calm, or will she one day burn?

( plan iii ) what will happen if her prides causes her to take a step too far? what if her need for her independence rattles cages meant to be left alone? she was once neutral in a territory that doesn’t easily forgive, if it ever does. she has removed one mask, and the city of verona gasped at the reveal; they will not forget the slight she has caused. how will she clash with other members of different mobs? how will those neutral characters choose to interact with her now that she is clearly not one of them? all of this and more begs for exploration.

In Depth

“What is this for again?” The question is drenched with an incredulous tone, her raised brow more a warning than curiosity as she peers over her shoulder. The girl following her, with a steno pad and pen tucked behind her ear, is harmless. This Brielle sensed since the girl peeked her head into the stables, her voice echoing against the walls asking if Signora King was in the vicinity. Still, as the girl offered her hand for a shake, Brielle couldn’t help but notice the stitching at the cuff of her sleeve and the sheen to well-worn boots. That flare of caution rose at the signs of wealth. She had learned her lesson over and over and over as to how she needed to treat such people — and how she wanted to treat them.

“School project. For journalism,” the girl replies, hand still wavering between snatching the pen behind her ear or keeping it in place until — whenever. Brielle barely manages to keep her eyes from rolling, opting to look ahead instead and slide into one of the stable units. The horse resting is not Chasing Tales, but she treats them all as if they were own. Has to, if they majority would ever feel they were treated right.

As she reached for the brush, her gaze flicked back to the girl. She finally decided to grab for her pen, eagerness dripping from her very being. “You’re going to have to manage with me continuing my work. I don’t exactly have time to stop and humor a school interview today.”

“Would you stop and humor me if I were a legitimate journalist?”

“Not at all.” Brielle shoots a small smile, and turns back to the horse before it can nudge her for attention. “You may begin.”

What is your favorite place in Verona?

She muses over this question as she brushes. Now that she was a permanent resident, despite only being in the city for a few months, there were more places she could list as being ones she enjoyed. The cafe, for one. The soup kitchen another. However, whether she would be allowed in such places was a different story at the present. Besides, relaxation or interacting with others in the same position as her family, while good things, brilliant things in their own regard — were they her favorite places? Should they be?

                               ( yet whenever should popped as a form of question,                                              in retrospect, she already knew the answer. )

“There’s a moment,” she finally begins, her eyes meeting that of the horse’s, “when the race has already began, and maybe I’m doing what I planned to do, perhaps I’m falling behind. There’s a moment when I lean forward, knees pressing to Chasing Tales side, where he and I — we merge as one. Which is what should happen as a jockey and horse, you know. But that sense it’s happening, it’s so freeing, like the world is in your hands and millions of miles below you at the same moment. That — that is my favorite place to be.”

What does your typical day look like?

“I believe no days are typical.” Not anymore, at least. If she were home, the rigorous, menial tasks she was ordered to do would be a typical day. And she partook in every task with the sense something better would set itself before her feet, wrapped in a way that allowed her to know it was a genuine present. And that had finally come, after twenty-one years.

Whether Faron’s smile was the same gift now as it was then —- well, that was a question with a difficult answer.

“While I am here at the stables more often than not, routine work only deems me here in the morning to take care of the horses and to train. If there is a race, I’m here not matter the time of day. In general, though, I walk where my feet lead me. If there are errands needed to be done, someone who knows me needs my assistance and I’m able to do it, then I’ll do those things. Every day brings something new somehow, you know? And that’s what typical I suppose; the variety, the unexpected.“

What are your thoughts on the war between the Capulets and the Montagues?

“You trying to paint a bigger target on my back?” Brielle asks, coming to the door I plant her face in the other girl’s. While her voice didn’t raise, her piercing stare causes the girl to avert her own after a few moments.

“Everyone has an opinion,” the girl mutters, and Brielle immediately replies, “And not every one needs to be shared.”

Sighing, she rests her arms over the stable’s door, letting the horse nudge her shoulder until he lost interest. “Listen, all I’ll say is that it’s time for their dispute to end.” And for someone new to rise. She doesn’t know Faron’s plans, and maybe those like Calina didn’t know either. But the Spades already disrupted the flow of conflict;one day, they would be the ones to put an end to it all.

Licking her lips, she flicked a hand at the girl. “We done here?”

In-Character Para Sample:

Her breaths escape ragged, pooling over the mane that keeps whipping at her face. At some point, the hair needs to be clipped, shortened to an acceptable length that is comfortable for her and the judges. It is a note for later, a menial task compared to the training. What matters more is working hard today, and the next,

and the next.

It’s that needling sensation that has her digging her knees into further against Chasing Tales’ side, urging him to speed down the track. They weren’t attempting to break their personal record – that would be saved for an actual race – but she understood by the patter of his hooves and the glance to the marked rail that they were faltering. Practice couldn’t allow too much leeway in awful times; the road to success couldn’t be longer than it already was.

The upcoming turn was sharper than normal, and she eases the pressure of her left knee, leaning into the turn. In near parallel, Chasing Tales leaned, a harsh breath resounding. It was all she could hear, her breaths and his echoing under the instrumental of pounding hooves. This is how she knows she is alive.

As they round the turn, the thought is sudden, dangerous; she immediately disregards it, though as it nags at the back of her mind, she reaches a compromise with herself.

Chasing Tales’ stride lengthens out of the curve, and she feels the strength of his muscles as he drives himself forward. His mane still tickles her face, a reminder of how dangerous her idea is. Yet there are few she trusts in this world, and she has placed her life in this horse’s heart before.

Another breath. Her heart pounds against her chest. She closes her eyes, imaging the track laying out before her. There is the image of her arms spread wide as Chasing Tales runs forever. And she smiles, so wide and young and alive.

When she opens her eyes, she gently tugs at the reins, finally bringing the two of them to a halt. She leans forward, her hand brushing down the side of her horse’s neck. “What a brilliant run,” she whispers, and her gaze flicks to the movement of his ear, a giggle soon leaving her curled lips. She swings from her perch, landing without a sound. “Let’s get these sweaty things of your back, yeah?” The two of them are damp, a matching pair of hard workers, and her smile blooms stronger.

Yet it soon fades as she grabs the reins and turns. There along the railing, perhaps having watched her last run, is a man with the same smile that graced her presence months ago.

“Brielle King,” he says as if they met just yesterday.  "Faron Vasiliev,“ she replies, as if lifetimes had passed. She walks closer, Chasing Tales a beat behind her. When she draws near, her back straightens, her eyes on his. His smile widens a fraction. "It is time,” he murmurs. “Will you be prepared?"

And perhaps this is him giving the a chance to walk away. To return to the life she once knew, despite how suffocating it was. Or perhaps it was a test wrapped as a genuine gesture, and if she answered incorrectly, he would latch onto her until she was no more. Or perhaps it was nothing at all, given how she already had an answer prepared long ago.

Chasing Tales rests his muzzle on her shoulder. Her hand reaches up, fingers gracing a soft velvet. She is a sight to behold; a knight and her stead, sweat dripping down their faces and a glint of determination in their gazes.

A ragged breath. A flicker of a smile.

"I will always be prepared.”

chasing tales is the horse she runs at verona. she was the jockey of two other horses when she ran competitively before she moved, but chasing tales is by far the fastest and easiest horse she has worked with. while she has never owned any of the horses she rides to victory, her heart soars when she takes care of them. chasing tales is no exception to this, and she spends the most time of any jockey ensuring his comfort and that he is healthy before each race. she has never hesitated in pulling her horses from a race if she deemed them not fit, and there have been a few races since the explosion that chasing tales has been too spooked to race. she cares naught for the bets on her and her horse; his life is more important.

she wears her hair in a ponytail or braided; rarely does she let her hair cascade over her shoulders, as she finds it to be in the way more often than not. yet she doesn’t cut it, for when she looks in the mirror, she sees her mother’s face framed by her long hair. in those moments, she doesn’t convince herself her longing for home will fade.

she’s broken three fingers on her left hand and her fight arm from falls off a horse. they were injuries long ago, when she was a teenager still working too hard and too long, and they have never quite bent the same since. they don’t inhibit her riding or everyday life, so she doesn’t think much of them.

(May 25, 2019) Our Lady tells us "Little children, you are all called to pray with all your heart for the plan of salvation to be realized for you and through you..." The call we have been given is to first and foremost be intercessors with Mary for the plan of salvation in this world. But does our prayer really make a difference? I think that it can be easy to undervalue our prayer. We can wonder if our prayer helps Our Lady at all. I wonder if we undervalue prayer when we don't pray with the heart. Prayer that consists of words or even ideas, is not prayer. Prayer is a conversation with God, a meeting of old friends who can speak to one another even in silence. Prayer is a joining of hearts in the desire for peace, for the good of others. This kind of prayer moves mountains. This kind of prayer changes things. In prayer with the heart, God listens to our hearts and shares His heart with us, and the meeting is filled with power. The Holy Spirit is present in this kind of prayer. And things happen. If our heart is far from God, the words of prayer are in vain. 2563 The heart is the dwelling-place where I am, where I live; according to the Semitic or Biblical expression, the heart is the place "to which I withdraw." The heart is our hidden center, beyond the grasp of our reason and of others; only the Spirit of God can fathom the human heart and know it fully. The heart is the place of decision, deeper than our psychic drives. It is the place of truth, where we choose life or death. It is the place of encounter, because as image of God we live in relation: it is the place of covenant. 2564 Christian prayer is a covenant relationship between God and man in Christ. It is the action of God and of man, springing forth from both the Holy Spirit and ourselves, wholly directed to the Father, in union with the human will of the Son of God made man. Do you want to be on fire for God? Jesus shocked his disciples when he declared that he would cast fire and cause division rather than peace upon the earth. What kind of fire did Jesus have in mind here?

The fire of God's purifying love and cleansing word The image of fire in biblical times was often associated with God and with his action in the world and in the lives of his people. God sometimes manifested his presence by use of fire, such as God's revelation to Moses through the burning bush in the wilderness which was not consumed by the flames (Exodus 3:2). God assured the Hebrew people of his continual presence, guidance, and protection for them through the wilderness for forty years with the pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day (Exodus 13:21-22). The prophet Elijah called down fire from heaven to reveal God's presence and power and to purify the people of false idols (1 Kings 18:36-39). The image of fire was also used as a sign of God's glory (Ezekiel 1:4, 13) and holiness (Deuteronomy 4:24), his protective presence (2 Kings 6:17), and his righteous judgment (Zechariah 13:9) and holy wrath against sin (Isaiah 66:15-16).

Fire is also a sign and symbol of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist said that Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire (Matthew 3:11-12 and Luke 3:16-17). When the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the disciples at Pentecost "tongues of fire" appeared above their heads (Acts 2:3). We can see from both the Old and New Testament Scriptures that God's fire purifies and cleanses to make us clean (sins washed away) and holy (fit to offer him acceptable praise and worship), and it inspires a reverent fear (awe in God's presence) and respect (obeying and giving God his due) for God and for his holy word.  

Loyalty unites - division separates Why did Jesus link fire from heaven with costly division on the earth? Did he expect his followers to take his statement of "father against son and son against father" and "mother against daughter and daughter against mother" literally? Or was he intentionally using a figure of speech to emphasize the choice and cost of following him above all else? Jesus used a typical Hebrew hyperbole (a figure of speech which uses strong language and exaggeration for emphasis) to drive home an important lesson. We often do the same when we want to emphasize something very strongly. Jesus' hyperbole, however, did contain a real warning that the Gospel message does have serious consequences for our lives.

When Jesus spoke about division within families he likely had in mind the prophecy of Micah: a man's enemies are the men of his own household (Micah 7:6). The essence of Christianity is loyalty to Jesus Christ - the Son of God and Savior of the world - a loyalty that takes precedence over every other relationship. The love of God compels us to choose who will be first in our lives. To place any relationship (or anything else) above God is a form of idolatry.

Who do you love first and foremost? Jesus challenges his disciples to examine who they love first and foremost. A true disciple loves God above all else and is willing to forsake all for Jesus Christ. Jesus insists that his disciples give him the loyalty which is only due to God, a loyalty which is higher than spouse or kin. It is possible that family and friends can become our enemies if the thought of them keeps us from doing what we know God wants us to do. Does the love of Jesus Christ compel you to put God first in all you do (2 Corinthians 5:14)?

The Gospel message is good news for those who seek pardon, peace, and the abundant life which God offers us through his Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus offers true freedom to those who believe in him - freedom from slavery to sin, Satan, and the oppressive forces of hatred and evil that can destroy body, mind, and spirit. Do you listen to the voice of your Savior and trust in his word? Commit your ways to him, obey his word, and you will find true peace, joy, and happiness in the Lord your God.

**Prayer:                                                                                                                        "Lord Jesus, may the fire of your love consume me and transform my life that I may truly desire nothing more than life with you. Fill me with the power of your Holy Spirit that I may always seek to please you and do your will."

Former Head of Google China Foresees an AI Crisis—and Proposes a Solution

Q&A: Kai-Fu Lee talks about AI, jobs, and the human heart

When the former president of Google China talks about artificial intelligence and its potential to cause global upheaval, people listen. His hope is that enough people will listen to avert catastrophic disruption on three different scales: to the global balance of power, to national economies, and to human beings’ delicate souls.

Kai-Fu Lee has been fascinated by AI since he was an eager computer science student applying to Carnegie Mellon University’s Ph.D. program; his admission essay extolled the promise of AI, which he called “the quantification of the human thinking process.” His studies led him to executive positions in Apple, Microsoft, and Google China, before his 2009 founding of Sinovation Ventures, a venture-capital firm focusing on high-tech companies in China.  

His new book, AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), is something of a bait and switch. The first half explores the diverging AI capabilities of China and the United States and frames the discussion as a battle for global dominance. Then, he boldly declares that we shouldn’t waste time worrying about who will win and says the “real AI crisis” will come from automation that wipes out whole job sectors, reshaping economies and societies in both nations. 

“Lurking beneath this social and economic turmoil will be a psychological struggle,” he writes. “As more and more people see themselves displaced by machines, they will be forced to answer a far deeper question: In an age of intelligent machines, what does it mean to be human?”

IEEE Spectrum: Why do you believe that China will soon match or even overtake the United States in developing and deploying AI?

Kai-Fu Lee: The first and foremost reason is that we’ve transitioned out of an era of discovery—when the person who makes the discovery has a huge edge—and into an era of implementation. The algorithms for AI are pretty well known to many practitioners. What matters now is speed, execution, capital, and access to a large amount of data. In each of these areas, China has an edge.

That’s why I began the book by talking about China’s entrepreneurism. It’s not like Silicon Valley, which is built on iPhone breakthroughs and SpaceX innovations, it’s built on incredibly hard work. Chinese entrepreneurs find areas where there’s enough data and a commercially viable application of AI, and then they work really hard to make the application work. It’s often very hard, dirty, ugly work. The data isn’t handed to you on a silver platter. 

Spectrum: You say that Chinese tech giants like Tencent have a clear advantage in terms of access to data that’s needed to train AI. Do they really have more data than companies like Google?

Lee: There are a few ways to look at the data advantage. The first is how many users you have. Google probably has more users than Tencent, because it’s international. The second question is: How homogenous is your data set? Google’s data from Estonia may not help its work in India. It may be better to have rich data from one set of people who have the same language, culture, preferences, usage patterns, payment methods, and so on.

The third way to measure is how much data you have about each person. Tencent has a catch-all app, WeChat, that does basically everything. The average Chinese Internet user spends half of his or her time online in WeChat. When you open WeChat, you have access to everything U.S. users get from Facebook, Twitter, iMessage, Uber, Expedia, Evite, Instagram, Skype, PayPal, GrubHub, LimeBike, WebMD, Fandango, YouTube, Amazon, and eBay.

Spectrum: You describe China’s startup ecosystem as a brutal “coliseum” where companies don’t win because they’re the most innovative, but rather because they’re the best at copying, using dirty tricks, and working insane schedules.

Lee: There is creativity, but it’s just one tool. Another is copying. Entrepreneurs do whatever it takes to win, to build value for the user, and to make money. If you look at WeChat, you can’t point to one moment when it shocked the world like an iPhone. WeChat today is an amazing innovation, but it didn’t come about because someone at Tencent dreamed it up and built it and shocked the world. They kept layering on features that users wanted, they iterated, they threw away the features that didn’t work, and at the end they had a product that was the most innovative social network. It’s so good that Facebook is now copying them.

“50 Percent of Jobs Are in Danger”

Spectrum: You write that the big AI question isn’t whether China or the United States will dominate. Instead it’s how we’ll deal with the “real AI crisis” of job losses, wealth inequality, and people’s sense of self-worth.

Lee: AI will take many single-task, single-domain jobs away. You can argue that humans have abilities that AI does not: We can conceptualize, strategize, create. Whereas today’s AI is just a really smart pattern recognizer that can take in data, optimize, and beat humans at a given task. But how many jobs in the world are simple repetitions of tasks that can be optimized? How many jobs require no creativity, strategizing, conceptualization? Most jobs are repetitive: truck-driving, telemarketing, dishwashing, fruit picking, assembly-line work, and so on. I’m afraid that about 50 percent of jobs in the world are in danger. 

Whether these jobs will disappear in 15 years or 20 or 30, that’s debatable. But it’s inevitable. Not only can AI do a better job, it can do the job for almost marginal cost. Once you get the system up and running you just pay for the server, electricity, bandwidth. To be competitive, companies will be forced to automate. And this shift will happen a lot faster than has ever happened before in the history of humanity.

Spectrum: Why do you think “techno-utopians” have it wrong when they say that AI will ultimately create entirely new categories of jobs, just like the industrial revolution?

Lee: People say that in the industrial revolution, more jobs were created than destroyed. They say it was the same with electricity, and that we shouldn’t worry, because the same thing will happen this time with AI. I would agree with that if we had enough time. Those earlier technological revolutions took a century or longer. Electricity has been around for over 100 years, and we still don’t have electric cars, we’re still working on the grid. That gave people time to grow, and develop, and invent new jobs. But we have basically one generation with AI, and that’s a lot less time.

Spectrum: You argue that even if governments figure out a way to distribute money to all these jobless people, it will still be a crisis.

Lee: Most people don’t think of their job just as a source of income. It brings meaning to their life, it’s their contribution to the world. That’s how we decided to structure our capitalistic society: There’s the idea that even by working routine jobs, they can make money and make better lives for their families. If we pull the rug out from under them and say, you have no job, but here’s some money from the government, I think that would lead to bad outcomes. Some would be happy and retire early. Some will learn a new skill and get a new job, but unfortunately many will learn the wrong job, and get displaced again. A large number of people will be depressed. They will feel that life has no meaning, and this can result in suicide, substance abuse, and so on.

The Inevitability of the AI Revolution

Spectrum: If this kind of economic and societal upheaval is an inevitable consequence of AI, is there any chance that we’ll decide to turn away from the technology, and decide not to use it?

Lee: Individual governments can make certain decisions to slow down the deployment of AI. But for humanity as a whole, it’s not possible. We’ve opened Pandora’s box. We did, as humans, control the proliferation of nuclear weapons, but that technology was secret and required a huge amount of capital investment. In AI, the algorithms are well known to many people, and it’s not possible to forbid people to use them. College students are using them to start companies.

Take autonomous trucks as an example. While China is building cities and highways to facilitate autonomous trucks, the American trucking union is appealing to President Trump to forbid testing on highways. If the U.S. is currently ahead on autonomous trucks, but chooses to slow down the development for fear of taking away jobs from truck-drivers, the only outcome is that China will catch up. Chinese companies will test the trucks, get the data, that data will make the AI better, at some point the technology will be so good that China will export it to the rest of the world. At that point, the U.S. will still have to give in to automation.

Facing Death

Spectrum: You call this a grim picture, but then go on to say that there’s hope, and that the potential for human flourishing has never been greater. You had your own grim experience that led to your own flourishing. Can you talk about your cancer experience?

Lee: I had been a workaholic for my whole life, and I always put work as my top priority. It was only when I faced cancer and possible death that I realized that no amount of money, success, or fame could substitute for the love I have from other people. And I felt great regret for not giving back what they gave me. That was a wake-up call.

After I became better and my cancer was in remission, I changed my life. It’s not that I don’t work hard anymore, I still do. But I prioritize differently. I prioritize family, I found a much better balance. I realized that the optimization that I used to do at work brought me money, success, and fame, but those are not the things that really matter to me—although I once thought they were.

A Blueprint for Coexistence

Spectrum: So that experience led to your idea for what you call a blueprint for coexistence with AI, in which the use of AI gives people more time to love each other. You write that we must “forge a synergy between artificial intelligence and the human heart.” Can you give me an example of how this synergy might manifest in the job market?

Lee: One of my favorite examples is in medicine. Imagine a future clinic, in which the room is enhanced with all sorts of sensors that take readings of your body and give the human doctor lots of information. The doctor will help tease out information like family history and specific symptoms. 

AI can make a great diagnosis and suggest the treatment, the prescription, and so on. In early days, AI will give statistics and the doctor will make the final choice. But in time, it will be very rare that the doctor overrides the system. So the AI will do the diagnosis, then the doctor will deliver the message in a way that feels caring and warm. The doctor will also let the patient tell his or her story. In many countries, each person gets only five minutes of doctor’s time—but while the doctor may only need five minutes, the patient needs much more to feel heard, to ask questions, and to be reassured. 

If each doctor spends more time with each patient, there will need to be more doctors. Maybe they don’t need to be full MDs with 10 years of education and internship, since they no longer need to memorize all the symptoms and treatments. Instead they could get four years of education to become caring, compassionate caregivers, similar to nurse practitioners. Then the cost of health care will come way down, people will get better care, and the number of caregivers will go way up.

Meditation: Who do you love and cherish the most? God did not intend for us to be alone, but to be with others. He gives us many opportunities for developing relationships with family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Why does Jesus seem to ignore his own relatives when they pressed to see him? His love and respect for his mother and his relatives is unquestionable. Jesus never lost an opportunity to teach his disciples a spiritual lesson and truth about the kingdom of God. On this occasion when many gathered to hear Jesus he pointed to another higher reality of relationships, namely our relationship with God and with those who belong to God.

God offers the greatest of relationships

What is the essence of being a Christian? It is certainly more than doctrine, precepts, and commandments. It is first and foremost a relationship - a relationship of trust, affection, commitment, loyalty, faithfulness, kindness, thoughtfulness, compassion, mercy, helpfulness, encouragement, support, strength, protection, and so many other qualities that bind people together in mutual love and unity. God offers us the greatest of relationships - union of heart, mind, and spirit with himself, the very author and source of love (1 John 4:8,16).

God's love never fails, never forgets, never compromises, never lies, never lets us down nor disappoints us. His love is consistent, unwavering, unconditional, unrelenting and unstoppable. There is no end to his love. Nothing in this world can make him leave us, ignore us, or withhold from us his merciful love and care (Romans 8:31-39). He will love us no matter what. It is his nature to love. That is why he created us - to be united with him and to share in his love (1 John 3:1).

God is a trinity of divine persons - one in being with the eternal Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and a community of undivided love. God made us in his image and likeness (Genesis 1:26,27) to be a people who are free to choose what is good, loving, and just and to reject whatever is false and contrary to his love and righteousness (moral goodness). The Lord is all-powerful and all-knowing. Therefore, He is never at a loss, never surprised, and never on the defensive. Logically, the all-powerful, all-knowing Lord must always be on the offensive. Therefore, events opposed to God’s will are necessarily defensive maneuvers by Satan and those he is using. For example, the terrorists’ attacks on September 11, 2001, were in opposition to the Lord’s work of salvation. We naturally wonder what the Lord was and is doing that would be such a threat to the evil one. Why did Satan react so violently?  Of course, we probably don’t know the specific answer to what the Lord is doing behind the scenes.  However, we can be sure that God is showing “wonderful signs” (Mi 7:15), having “compassion on us, treading underfoot our guilt,” casting “into the depths of the sea all our sins” (Mi 7:19), and showing faithfulness and grace to us (Mi 7:20).

By faith, see the awesome works of the Lord dwarfing even the most shocking defensive actions of the evil one. Jesus’ victory is won. He is enthroned forever as the King of kings and the Lord of lords (see Heb 10:12-13). “Despite the increase of sin, grace has far surpassed it” (Rm 5:20). Alleluia forever! Thank You, Jesus!

Meditation: Who do you love and cherish the most? God did not intend for us to be alone, but to be with others. He gives us many opportunities for developing relationships with family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Why does Jesus seem to ignore his own relatives when they pressed to see him? His love and respect for his mother and his relatives is unquestionable. Jesus never lost an opportunity to teach his disciples a spiritual lesson and truth about the kingdom of God. On this occasion when many gathered to hear Jesus he pointed to another higher reality of relationships, namely our relationship with God and with those who belong to God.

God offers the greatest of relationships What is the essence of being a Christian? It is certainly more than doctrine, precepts, and commandments. It is first and foremost a relationship - a relationship of trust, affection, commitment, loyalty, faithfulness, kindness, thoughtfulness, compassion, mercy, helpfulness, encouragement, support, strength, protection, and so many other qualities that bind people together in mutual love and unity. God offers us the greatest of relationships - union of heart, mind, and spirit with himself, the very author and source of love (1 John 4:8,16).

God's love never fails, never forgets, never compromises, never lies, never lets us down nor disappoints us. His love is consistent, unwavering, unconditional, unrelenting and unstoppable. There is no end to his love. Nothing in this world can make him leave us, ignore us, or withhold from us his merciful love and care (Romans 8:31-39). He will love us no matter what. It is his nature to love. That is why he created us - to be united with him and to share in his love (1 John 3:1).

Ron Legrand – How to Get Rich with Your IRA and Never Pay Taxes

Did you know there’s a secret IRS regulation you can use to get rich without pay taxes on your newly found wealth? Don’t feel left out of the loop if you didn’t because this secret is one most CPAs aren’t even privileged to. While I’m a law abiding citizen and grudgingly pay my taxes on time each year, I’m only interested in paying what’s legally owed and not a cent more. I’m a firm believer in President Eisenhower’s philosophy that it’s the duty of every American to pay no more in taxes than what he or she owes legally.

In my quest to live up to my patriotic duty, I talked to every tax expert under the sun, but no matter which expert I talked to, I always felt like I was overpaying. So I set out on a mission…a mission to discover how I could legally pay the absolute bare minimum in taxes or maybe even no taxes. I continued to scour the country to find the best minds available to show me how I could legally pay no taxes, and, quite frankly, I didn’t think it could be done until I found one man with the answer I was searching and hoping for. “You really can legally make a fortune and pay no taxes on it. Furthermore, the government actually wants you to do this!”

Back in 1997, Congress, in a rare stroke of genius, passed what they called the “Taxpayer Relief Act.” Hidden in that act was a provision by the then Senate Finance Committee Chairman William Roth that created a new kind of IRA (Individual Retirement Account) designed to encourage more savings among Americans.

Unlike a traditional IRA where you get a tax deduction on the money you contribute and pay taxes when that money comes out, the Roth IRA works just the opposite. You don’t get a tax deduction on any contribution you make up to $5,500.00 a year depending on your current income; but you also don’t have to pay taxes when you take money out, and it grows tax free inside your IRA.

Here’s the kicker, though, and I want you to pay close attention. I’m about to reveal the HUGE SECRET very few accountants or lawyers have a clue about, and the ones that do have a vested interest in keeping this secret from you…

Here it is: Your Roth IRA can be “self directed.” I realize that at first glance, that secret may not sound like a big deal to most people, but to the smart real estate investor, i.e. the one who follows what I teach, it is a big deal, a HUGE DEAL. One that can effortlessly make you rich!

Here’s why: The way the law is written, you can only contribute up to $5,500 a year, BUT you can make as much money within your IRA as fast as you want by controlling HOW you invest the money.

If you still aren’t jumping out of your seat with excitement like you should be, let me give you an example the “Average Joe” has no clue about. Most people listen to their accountant or financial advisor, as they think they should, and put the money they contribute in their IRA into stocks or mutual funds that grow at wimpy rates of return, or in recent years not at all. Even if you’re putting away the maximum contribution every year, it takes a long, long time for it to grow into anything substantial, even though it grows tax free when you’re investing in stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Pathetic and irritating, huh?

Who wants to wait around to get rich? Not me and hopefully not you; however, consider the results when your Self-Directed Roth IRA does a real estate deal, following the IRS regulations to the tee: it makes a tiny investment in a house, I recommend $100, then you turn right around and sell that house, turning a huge profit (the average profit my students make in the “pretty house business” is $35,000.00 by the way). Since it’s an investment by your IRA, not a personal contribution, that money goes right back into your IRA, TAX FREE, FOREVER.

Think about that for a second…. how many real estate deals like that do you have to do to absolutely flood your IRA with enough tax-free cash for yourself and your family? How many times do you have to invest $100 to make $35,000.00 to pay your children’s and grandchildren’s college tuition? Not many!

In our example, the Average Joe following the advice of his financial advisor invests $100 and, if he’s lucky, gets back $112 in a year, and that’s at a good 12% return rate that is unheard of during this recession and less commissions, of course. The savvy real estate investor takes that same $100, invests it in a house that doesn’t even require his own money to buy if he does it my way, and gets back $35,000 in only a month or two. Now, THAT’S what I call a return rate!

Now that you know one of my many secrets, think about what you can do when you have real money in your IRA. All of a sudden you can make $100 investments in houses while the cash in your IRA simultaneously grows tax free in other investments at 15%, 25%, or even 30% per year, passively with no extra work on your part.

Would you like to know the step-by-step process to do that? Would you like to know exactly how to stuff your IRA full of tax-free cash on a constant and consistent basis? Would you like to sit back and watch $100,000, $500,000, or even $1 million grow tax free day by day, hour by hour before your very eyes? It’s the way they were taught by those who came before them, and they simply don’t know any better. Plus, very few of them are real estate investors, and if they are, they’re the traditional, “buy and hold” crowd, not “transaction engineers” like myself and my successful students. When you talk to one of these professionals about how to make money buying and selling houses my way, you might as well be speaking a foreign language to them because THEY JUST DON’T GET IT. In fact, it scares them.

Even when you try to patiently explain how your Roth IRA can buy real estate with little or no money, their eyes glaze over, they refuse to listen, and they continue to hold tightly onto the stale methods they find comfortably familiar. It’s so far outside their normal reality, they actively resist what you tell them and do their best to counsel you against it.

Plus, even if you order them to look into it, their financial institutions won’t let them set up a true Self-Directed Roth IRA. At best, what they claim is “self directed” is really multiple choice where you get to choose from three underperforming mutual funds and a pool of low interest, but “safe!”, bonds. They most certainly will NOT let you invest in real estate. You have to find a financial institution that specializes in self-directed IRAs, and not one in ten thousand financial professionals knows where to find one, BUT I DO…
