#but I've read a LOT of dcu fanfic

It seems that the majority of the dp x dc fandom is more familiar with danny phantom + phandom canon/lore than dc canon, and I'm curious where people are getting their information about dc comics.
I've been thinking about writing fic for a while, and the one I've started writing is based off of Bruce's time lost in the time stream after the fight with Darkseid, and it's already apparent that there are a lot of differences between the events laid out in Batman: Return of Bruce Wayne, than what I expected based off the fanworks in dp x dc. Notably, most times in the fandom we depict Tim/Red Robin as ignored when he tries to present proof of Batman's being alive, but from what I'm reading in the graphic novel, he, Wonder Woman, and Superman are basically leading different task forces in the effort to recover Bruce while preventing him from becoming a reality-ending bomb. Then again, I'm having a hard time figuring out which comics cover the events between Darkseid's defeat and the search for Bruce Wayne aside from Battle for the Cowl, which from the summary Comicstorian's video provides still doesn't depict the events as I see them often depicted in the common fanon
I'm not trying to argue that we should be sticking more to the events as they happen in comics, I'm just genuinely curious where people get their information. To be fair, one of the first DCU fanfics I read had a tag that said something like "DC stands for Disregard Canon", and when I started trying to get into comics one of the first things I heard is that DC doesn't even respect it's own canon all the time so I don't think that there's much point trying to stick to canon, especially when it can be more fun or create a more engaging story when we break it.

Hi! I've binged your reverse robin series and absolutely loved it you are an incredible writer, I am by no means a huge dcu fan but your writing is so good it makes me want to become one! I fell in love with every character you wrote, especially tim drake :) I was wondering if you have any fic recs etc have a nice day x
I'm so glad you liked it!!! Please don't become a DCU fan <3.
And Tim Drake is one of my favorite comic book characters of all time (maybe just behind Bart Allen), so that little jerk's very distinct in the mind lol. I wrote like this whole-ass 50,000 word Cass Cain POV that takes place after the prophetic spring that does him much better, I think, but that story's a bit long to post on tumblr and way too bad to put on AO3.
As for fic recs. Thank you for asking.
There are three good Tim Drake fanfics. "Surely there has to be more -" no there are not. These are the three good Tim Drake fanfics.
Chirp by AmariT does something tremendously difficult and is a very good case fic that feels like a comic book run, with well-defined arcs and character development. It's very comic flavor and I think really nails Tim as a comic character very well.
The Bat's Crest by livierambles is insanely well written, super twisty and intricately plotted, with an excellent nail on a million different characters. I don't know if this one is a "Tim Fic" but he's a big pov character.
Anyway the best Tim Drake fic of all time is Red Raven by PlotlessWanderer because it is, maybe, the only fanfic I've ever read to truly understand and explore how fucking batshit insane this boy is. He is a nut. He is off his rocker. He will crash Gotham's economy. He will take on a League of ninjas. He will fake a family member. He will fake his death. He's a super genius. He's an idiot. He has no friends. He only thinks he has no friends. He's the living incarnation of the pepe silva meme. He's insane. He's too sane. He's found an RPG. He is everywhere. He is nothing. He is totally radical.
I think the best Tim Drake is just a boy who is fucking insane.
#okay. shout out to the fic where tim keeps zombie jason in his closet.#my writing#i realize i have taken a hard stance on this#and i'm certain that if you've written tim drake fic it's excellent#but I've read a LOT of dcu fanfic#and there's only three good tim fics. goodnight.#the reverse robin series makes a lot of sense if you read it with the knowledge that I hate 90% of batfam fanfics#it's kind of a shame I really can't put the cass fic anywhere because it's probably the best tim i've done so far

Hi! I just finished reading the fourth part of your omegaverse series on ao3. It was soooooo good. Your characterizations are really realistic and I love the way you write. I've never been into the DCU fandom before, but after reading your fic, I've been sucked in! I'm not really sure where to start because there's so much. Could you possibly point me in a direction?
You have a few options.
First… comics.
If you’re looking for Batman a good beginner-friendly place to start would be Scott Snyder’s work on the New 52. It starts with Batman: The Court of Owls and continues with some other really good stories after that. You can buy it in trade paperback from any good comic book store or online. Also in the New 52 and by Scott Snyder is Superman: Unchained which is, likewise, a good comic for people just getting to know the universe and the characters.
In fact, while there is a lot of criticism of the New 52 one thing it did do well was make the universe accessible to new readers. I would also recommend Geoff John’s Aquaman and Brian Azzarello’s Wonder Woman (if you’re a fan of Greek Myth) from the New 52. Green Lantern was also amazing but might not be a great place for beginners.
A lot of Superbat fans started shipping with the Superman/Batman series by Jeph Loeb which I personally am not hugely into but because so many people in this fandom are I would still recommend it.
Stepping back a bit I also enjoyed the 90s Nightwing Series by Chuck Dixon and back even further the New Teen Titans by Marv Wolfman is absolute gold once you get over the way comics were written in the 80s.
There are a lot better comics than that but I am trying to think of stuff which inspired my writing which would be good for someone starting out.
If, though, you would rather not do comics there are other options.
Like the animated series and movies.
This is probably a good way to jump into the bat family as they have some simplified versions of famous bat stories. The best in my opinion is Batman: Under the Red Hood.
youtube
There is also a whole chain of movies with Bruce and Damian. I personally am on the fence about them as they are VERY simplified but they’re actually a pretty good place to start if you’re a bit confused as to how Damian fits into everything.
If you’re getting bored of movies and want something longer then the Justice League Animated Series is the place to be. That for me was really where I fell in love with the universe ad with Clark and Bruce. Yes, it’s a kid’s show, but I would highly recommend. It is also a really good place just to get to know other members of the DCU. The series eventually evolves into Justice League Unlimited which has a really diverse cast of characters… but it starts slow with just seven iconic heroes.

Finally you can always just read more fanfic.
Here are some of my favourite DC fanfic writers:
FabulaRasa
Skalidra
Mithen
BuckinghamAlice
ohmcgee
Plus there are heaps of others out there that I either can’t remember, can’t find, or haven’t discovered. If you hunt around I am sure you’ll be able to find some cool rec lists to hit up.
Otherwise, I am really glad you liked my work and thanks so much for leaving such a lovely message. It’s always a treat to come back from work to see another pair of thumb up aimed in my direction.

Thanks for tagging me @darkkitty1208!
Last Song: I Can't Handle Change by Roar. It's just the last song I had playing on Spotify. I'm not too picky about music most of the time so I listen to what comes up. I'm also super willing to listen to music recs.
Currently Watching: Iron Man movies. I watched 1 and am working through 2 and 3. Planning on tackling a lot of other MCU movies as well.
Currently Reading: Haven't read any "book" books lately, but there's an online novel that's in the process of being published that I've been reading. It's called Beware of Chicken: A Xianxia Cultivation Novel by CasualFarmer. It has volumes 3 and 4 online and in progress and volumes 1 and 2 are published on Amazon. Find volume 1 HERE. Fanfic wise, I'm rereading Skin Deep by Mystical_Magician. It's one of my favorite fics!
Current Obsession: MCU in general. Major focus on Doctor Stephen Strange, but if it has to do with the MCU I'm pretty interested. Also frequently divert to Danny Phantom and DCU.
tagging(No pressure to reply, I'm not even sure if any of you want to be tagged *sweats*): @xenocorner @aelaer @infiniteeight8 @mshusbandblog Feel free to join in if you want to and haven't been tagged!
9 people you want to get to know better
Tagged by @greypetrel - thank you! <3
Last Song: Francesca - Hozier (the song is amazing, and I can't help but think it was somehow inspired by the story of Paolo e Francesca in Dante's Divine Comedy).
Currently Watching: ... nothing? I'm terrible with shows because I often end up rewatching my favourites instead of catching up with the newest releases - or I just do other stuff instead (unless it's a period drama, let's be real).
Currently Reading: parallel-reading Rinascimento anticlericale by Ottavia Niccoli (lots of topics that I used to study at Uni- it feels like meeting again a bunch of old friends) and a (very good) fantasy book written by a friend.
Current Obsession: Dragon Age, no questions - thank you, Arja :P I'm playing at snail-like pace the second one, and so far I'm really enjoying it (meta storytelling? a city as a character, almost a living organism, albeit a rotten one? queer characters all around? YES). Will I try to install&play Inquisition too even if technically my pc is not that powerful? Ahaha... yes.
Too tired to think of 9 people, but maaaybe @birdkeeperklink wants to share? No pressure tho!
