Tues 15 June â21
Venice MP filming is underway, romantic canalside walks and gondola ride are a GO, as seen in pap pics and many (many) videos from fans gathered on site! Iâm sure they appreciated all the little sheer polo showing off Harryâs tits, who doesnât love a good hiddies moment huh? GQ probably did too; they already wrote a whole article about the outfit Harry wore yesterday! But even they canât say anything better about those shorts than that they look âpresentableâ LMAO. TAKE THAT corduroy shorts! What about those fans though? Well, they are certainly bringing us plenty of videos- Harry handing co-star David up out of a boat like a sweet gentleman, aww, Harry skipping about between shots, Harry with a lil purse, Harry just trying to live his life and like go eat food when not working, etc etc... maybe folks could take a few steps back? Looks like Harry is really getting hounded through the tiny Venetian streets and on set, by pretty large crowds, to the extent of disrupting filming, oh no. Harry signed a picture for a nearby school-- âstay outrageousâ, again dating it (June â21) but possibly by the end of the day he was wishing people would not be quite so outrageous.
Meanwhile the antis stuck at home are frothing at the mouth trying to convince larries (or maybe themselves?) that we now ship David and Harry- uh sorry sweaty but having the ability to understand that holding hands for cameras does not have to mean that people are really fucking is actually a pretty major core component of the whole larrie thing?! But good luck with that! It makes sense that seeing Harry acting lovey dovey with someone that they know he isnât actually sleeping with would throw them in a tizzy though, after all their whole identity is based on denying thatâs a thing thatâs possible... poor things, babyâs first cognitive dissonance! It can really make you question things huh, and thatâs always rough.
But theyâre not the only ones with things to say about Harry! Superstar of stage and screen Mandy Patinkin posted video of himself and his wife getting four minutesâ worth of lightning round pop culture trivia questions wrong, but he nails one of em- asked what a Harry song (WS) is about, he remains silent. Well done, thatâs just what Harry would have said! And Selma Hayek told a story about Harry coming to her house where her pet owl (who Harry was enthralled with and wanted to hang out with him) regurgitated an owl pellet in his hair! LOL poor Harry; naturally she said he handled it very well and was very sweet. Yes, itâs possible Harryâs interactions with her were because sheâs in Marvelâs Eternals; itâs also possible he was at her house because her husband is the head of the company that owns Gucci, or for some other reason entirely.
Liamâs Lonely Bug NFTs went on sale today!! Liam was excited and happy and all over the internet posting and chatting and watching it all happen. The auctions are still open for most of them so final news on that tomorrow! Today was just Liam being hype about it- âFandom is working its magic thank you!â he said when his request to get LB trending got it up there worldwide in like half an hour, he said more interactive content will be added to the NFTs as time goes on, that Louis cooking was âvery funnyâ, when asked to describe his NFT collection in one word he chose âliberating,â and his hair guy reposted comments Liam has been making in the discord talking about maybe going blond with a âhmmmâ. Oooh? He did a long live talking about everything, patching in the other Lonely Bug creators and quite a few other NFT people (enough that at one point Liam jokes that there are enough of them to dress up as the band to satisfy commenters asking for 1D stuff). Anyway one of them compares this NFT to âthe original Nirvana recordingsâ hmmm I mean⊠that is another thing that is rare I guess yes, but thatâs very specific and random sir? âI know for some of you this NFT world is slightly different than what youâre used to from me,â said Liam, âbut your support so far has been amazing (as always!)â
And not only that- another new Liam song coming?! We havenât even got the one yet! (or maybe this is the same one..?) Anyway, school pal S-X (Liam hyped his music a couple weeks ago) talked about him in an interview, saying "Liam is a good friend of mine and we've got stuff coming soon. I don't want to say too much as you know how those One Direction fans get [HEYYYY⊠oh wait yeah heâs totally right]- when I mention him I can't even open my Twitter. But we've got a song coming and it's a smash. It's sooner than you think and that's all I can say." OH RILLY?? INTERESTING! I was just eyeing him for the artist showcase Liam said he was gonna do on veeps but OKAY! He also said "We're both from Wolverhampton and I was in college with him at the same time, and going from that to global stardom at 17 is not normal for any person. To have toured the world, done stadium tours and everything, he is one of the most famous people in the world. So he will go through scrutiny from the media and whatever, but I can tell you he is one of the nicest people, one of the most genuine people I've ever met. He's a real good friend of mine."
And speaking of unexpected songs; another Zayn demo leak was posted! This time heâs singing You with Ellie Goulding; the song ended up being released by Troye Sivan.
And Anne Marie posted ârehearsals for #OURSONG live! I just love this song so much. I also miss your face @niallhoranâ with a picture of them singing away; apparently sheâs referring to the recording of the acoustic version which is out on Friday. Niall posted a picture of the Danish football player who collapsed during play the other day giving a thumbs up from the hospital; indeed it is very good to see that heâs all right.
#harry styles#liam payne#zayn#niall horan#my policeman filming#my policeman spoilers#leaving aside the thing antis can't seem to grasp which is that we don't ship harry and louis at all#shipping and thinking people are queer are literally NOT THE SAME THING#but I neither think harry and david are fucking nor ship them so that's that on that#15 jun 21

20 Questions: Writer Edition
@markcampbells WHO I ADORE tagged me. Thank you bby
How many works do you have on AO3?
21
Whatâs your total AO3 word count?
151,962. Wowzer.
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
8. Barry HBO, Defending Jacob, Graceland TV, Killing Eve, Les Mis, Marvel, Pacific Rim, Veep.
What are your top five fics by kudos?
Still I Run Right Into You (Pacific Rim (2013))
I'm the Bad Guy (Killing Eve (TV 2018), Barry (TV 2018))
A Minor Overreaction (Pacific Rim (2013))
Baby, You Don't Know What it's Like (Graceland (TV))
Oh, Baby, Baby, Merry Christmas (Darling) (Veep (TV))
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Absolutely. The fact that someone would take time out of their day to say something about my work is so flattering.
Whatâs the fic youâve written with the angstiest ending?
(jet set) bonnie and clyde series for Barry did not end happy, but thatâs because I firmly believe Hader wants that show realistic. I tried to stay true to that.
Whatâs the fic youâve written with the happiest ending?
Oh, Baby, Baby, Merry Christmas (Darling) (Veep (TV)). Christmas fluff and what Amy and Dan deserved.
Do you write crossovers? If yes, whatâs the craziest thing youâve written?
Yesâm. The wildest one was Barry and Killing Eve because Villanelle was merciless to Barry about everything. Iâm the Bad Guy. It was so much fun.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yes, but I donât have enough RAM in my brain to remember all of them. I remember someone being angry about the shoes I gave Hermione which were based on my prom heels. When I wrote it, I was 18 and no idea shoes could be slutty. (They canât. Theyâre shoes. Feet fingers are neither prudes nor sluts).
Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I do. I used to be a fade to black type. Now, I try to focus on feelings, sensations, and what it means to the story. I canât do super explicit because I will laugh because Iâm a weirdo.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Donât think so. Part of me would be angry cause hard work and the other part would find it hilarious.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
No. Have at it though.
Have you ever co-written a fic?
A long time ago I wrote a Supernatural/Harry Potter fic with a lot of help from someone.
Whatâs your all time favourite ship?
Um. What do I ship again? I donât have an all time favorite anymore. David x Patrick on Schittâs Creek, Danny x Mindy on the Mindy Project, Amy x Jake on Brooklyn Nine Nine, Dan x Amy on Veep.
Whatâs a WIP you want to finish but donât think you ever will?
It will get finished, but due to the fucking horror of the last two years, Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince is on hold. Itâs Veep. Itâs heavy. Itâs about Dan and Amy handling a scandal in Danâs family.
Whatâs your writing strengths?
Dialogue. Jokes. Plot. Being a screenwriter, Iâm very dialogue heavy.
Whatâs your writing weaknesses?
Descriptions. I cannot write as beautifully as @odinsdottir-rogers or @starfleetstgmgr or @beca-mitchell. I wish I could. Alas, this is what we got. From writing scripts, Iâm used to having a limited amount of space and Iâll just write âShe walks to the doorâ instead of going into detail about how she feels, what the door looks like etc. Iâm trying.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in fic?
If you speak it or you know people who do, then itâs totally awesome. I used some Hindi in Log kya kahenge for Defending Jacob and I think that made it more authentic.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
I wanna say Star Wars or Harry Potter.
Whatâs your favourite fic youâve written?
Umm. I like a lot of them especially my Veep series because of the twins. I love making OCs which is probably cause I write some original scripts. However, my current love is but itâs golden like daylight because I love Nicolette Stark. Iâve spent the most time ever crafting her and making her fleshed out. She keeps that Captain on his toes.
tagging: @starfleetstgmgr @odinsdottir-rogers @muttpeeta @casliyn @beca-mitchell @adecila and whoever wants to do this. If you donât, no worries.

about me!
hey! i'm vio.
that's not my real name (by real name, i don't mean dead name - i mean chosen name that i use in real life), but it doesn't mean i chose it at random. viola (vio) is my online name for a reason.
i chose the name viola because even though it's a girl's name, it's also the name of one of shakespeare's most sexually ambiguous characters to exist. vio, while also being a nickname for viola, is it's own name that comes from the word vita, meaning life.
in fact, i want vio to be my middle name once i legally change my name.
â°â°â°
i've kind of come to terms with my good traits and my not-so-good traits. i've been described as charismatic, kind, intelligent, patient, caring, thoughtful, good at giving advice, and funny. but the downside to being (supposedly) charismatic is that i can be manipulative. i also lie a little more than i should because of my anxiety.
â°â°â°
sexuality and gender wise, i'm not someone you can put into labels. i'm equally okay with he/him and they/them pronouns, so i'm perfectly comfortable with either the label trans ftm or nonbinary.
although i'm TECHNICALLY pansexual, I enjoy the term queer because it makes me feel less self conscious about if i'm more straight than gay (or vice versa) and things like that.
â°â°â°
i'm: - a pisces - a slytherin (although i don't support j.k. rowling herself and i don't love the harry potter series either, knowing my house will probably help you get a feel for who i am) - an enfj/infj (it changes a surprising amount) - an 8 (then a 3, then a 5) in the enneagram - chaotic neutral - a son of loki - a son of either hermes or hades (it's been a long internal debate)
â°â°â°
i love: - hunter x hunter (ăăłăżăŒĂăăłăżăŒ / hantÄ hantÄ) - attack on titan (éČæăźć·šäșș / shingeki no kyojin) - my hero academia (ćăźăăŒăăŒăąă«ăăăą / boku no hÄ«rĆ akademia) - death note (ăăčăăŒă / desu nĆto) - haikyu!! (ăă€ăă„ăŒ!! / haikyĆ«!!) - violet evergarden (ăŽăĄă€ăȘăŹăăă»ăšăŽăĄăŒăŹăŒăăł / vaioretto evÄgÄden) - nura: rise of the yokai clan (ăŹăăăČăăăźć« / nurarihyon no mago / nurarihyon's grandson) - ouran high school host club (æĄèé«æ Ąăăčăéš / Ćran KĆkĆ Hosuto Kurabu) - black clover (ăă©ăăŻăŻăăŒăăŒ / burakku kurĆbÄ) - yuri!!! on ice (ăŠăŒăȘ!!! on ICE) - westworld - the politician - the haunting of hill house - the good place - good omens - brooklyn nine-nine - on my block - lost in space - many more
i'm a big shipper and it causes me quite a bit of pain considering i mostly ship gay ships and i also mostly watch animes so they'll never happen.
â°â°â°
i used to play basketball and tennis, but now i mainly just use my dad's peloton bike and go on runs. oh, and i also snowboard and surf! i'm pretty good at surfing although i need someone to push me on a wave and i'm getting a lot better at snowboarding (although i'm not GOOD).
â°â°â°
i enjoy cooking too, but don't have enough time or energy for it. i love horror movies and house plants, but i can't take care of them for shit.
â°â°â°
i really like to listen to music!!! it's very hard to describe my musical taste, but my top grneres are modern rock, indie pop, indie, pop, rock, electropop, and dance pop.Â
i used to listen to more emo music, but recently iâve found that it just gets me down, so i try to listen to upbeat/chill music.
my spotify account name is strangecharm if you want to follow me! the playlist currently. has music that rotates as i find my favorite songs, but seventh grade. has all the music i've liked this year! i also really enjoy the playlist chill.
i also like musicals (dear evan hansen, be more chill, heathers, six the musical, and hamilton for the most part), but they're not what i listen to for the most part.
oh! i'm a singer and a pianist! i've always loved singing, but i always hated piano. a while ago, i got significantly better and started playing songs i enjoyed. it gave me this sense of motivation i've never felt when it comes to piano. i've even composed a couple piano pieces at this point!
â°â°â°
another really nerdy thing about me is that i genuinely enjoy philosophy and poetry (particularly from one of my favorites, rumi).
i love: - john green - david levithan - terry pratchett - neil gaiman - tomi adeyemi - rick riordan - jalÄl ad-dÄ«n muhammad rĆ«mÄ« (aka rumi; heâs an ancient persian poet, and heâs queer as hell) overall, i don't really read by authors, though. for the most part, when i choose a book, it's because it was recommended to me or is of value to me as an author.
â°â°â°
i'd like to grow up to be an author, but i also want to teach writing so i can share what i know! my (dream) life plan is kind of to go to college in london or, if not, somewhere on the east coast of the united states.
from there, i'd either want to study abroad in japan or get my english abroad permit and teach english in japan.
â°â°â°
i'm re-learning spanish and learning japanese, too! i want to learn them for four main reasons among many: 1) knowing spanish is really helpful in america 2) i can write novels in english, spanish, and japanese! 3) both spanish and japanese are absolutely beautiful languages- way more beautiful than english. 4) i can watch animes and have peace of mind because i won't have to read subtitles that are insanely off from what the voice actors are saying.
â°â°â°
i'm an eclectic witch (although i am particularly drawn to divination and green witchcraft)!
i really love tarot cards! some people think they can tell the future which is okay (i guess), but personally, i just use them to help me recognize themes in my and other people's life/lives from an unbiased perspective and help make things better.
my favorite kind of spells are jar spells and tea spells. if i'm doing spells, they're normally protection spells, self-love spells, or anti-anxiety/depression/bad vibe spells. i don't really believe in trying to use hexes or curses because then you're no better than the person you're cursing.
â°â°â°
i love art, but i'm not very good at it, so for the most part i do abstract art instead of realistic art. abstract art is pretty fun, too!
i'm trying to get better at using proportions and things, though. my favorite method is the loomis method and i love the youtube channel proko.
you can check out my book on wattpad, artistic elixir (i know, cheesy; i thought i was cool and iâm too lazy to rename it), if you want to see some of my art.
â°â°â°
i have a lot of unpopular opinions. some are big and some are small. that's just who i am. my mom's insanely left wing and lgbtq+ herself, but my dad's neither left nor right wing, leaving him hated by both wings. i've become a weird mix where i'm definitely more left wing than right, but i'm also not really either wing.
for example, i think that, if I'm being honest, the amount of labels in LGBTQ+ community has gotten out of hand. i'm not saying that the feelings aren't real. I'm not saying that it's impossible to not want to have sex or feel physical attraction until you get to know someone. but some genders & sexualities sound a lot more like a preference to me. i think that a lot of labels that exist could easily fit into other ones that already did exist. i also feel that you need some kind of dysphoria to be genderqueer and that neopronouns are a bit unnecessary.
basically, the rule of thumb for me is that i don't give a fuck. by saying this, i mean that i both do not give a fuck: 1) in that you can do whatever you want and be whoever you want and don't have to to live by my opinions. i understand and respect that and iâll love you the same as long as youâre not hurting anyone with your actions. 2) in that i won't tiptoe around you, trying not to hurt you. i will share my opinion, regardless of whether or not it hurts you. i speak my mind; that's how i've always been and always will be.
â°â°â°
i have a pinterest, a wattpad, an archive of our own, a spotify, and, obviously, a tumblr, so just ask me if you want my account on any of them!
â°â°â°
thatâs basically all i can think of, but iâll always answer questions for you guys! just send me an ask or even a pm if you want to ask any other questions, or even just want to talk! iâm always up for making friends!

Letâs debunk this hot trash
âPart of the problem in front of Marvel Comics is the Marvel Universe is one long, mostly-unbroken line since its inception in 1961's Fantastic Four #1. There have been retcons, changes, tweaks, and cuts, but by and large it's a straight run. The universe has seen a number of resets, but it's mostly been returned to the state that long-time fans are comfortable with.â
Why is this a problem? Marvel is the highest selling comic book company in America and the long continuity is objectively not a problem.
Itâs just something people incorrectly claim is a problem.
By the 1990s Marvel already had shittons of complicated continuity that had been going longer than most other long running franchise stories.
The readers back then jumped on ship just fine.
The AMOUNT of continuity you have is never the problem itâs how you manage it. In the days where every issue was treated as someoneâs first and made accessible the amount of continuity was never a problem.
âMarvel Comics as a whole and the current creative stewards of its characters have to roll with 57 years of punches. They have to take the good and the bad. In the case of Spider-Man, the current writers, artists, and editors have to occasionally tackle the fact that Peter Parker hit his wife, made a deal with Mephisto to wipe out his marriage, or that Gwen Stacy had sex with Norman Osborn. â
They donât HAVE to deal with any of that.
They already dealt with the first of those things and simply SHOULD deal with the other two by erasing them.
But itâs also not like the presence of those things (sans OMD) is a huge hamper on the storytelling abilities or sales of the writers.
âMany of these are moments that readers and creators would simply like to forget, but they're a part of the fabric of the character. â
Yes and welcome to âThis is how a dramatic character on serialized fictionâ works.
âWith Marvel's Spider-Man for PlayStation 4, Insomniac Games had the chance to start from scratch. They get to pick and choose what works for their version of Peter Parker and his alter-ego. The only backstory he brings to the table is that which Insomniac has carefully considered. This allows the team to drop the facets of Spider-Man that maybe didn't work and play around with some new ideas that might be better. And if Marvel's smart, they should steal some of what Insomniac Games did here.â
Why?
Insomniac already stole from Marvel.
Sales and storytelling potential for Spider-Man is NOT hampered by large continuity or even negative patches of it for the most part.
When bad stories happen so long as they are fixed then things get to move on. Even something as bad as Sins Past isnât overly a drag because the story itself is so nonsensical it might as well not be canon, people have isolated and ignored it and the scope of the damage it can cause is fairly limited, it doesnât really cut to the heart of the franchise. The time he hit his wife on the other hand was dealt with and moved on from.
So the existence of bad patches doesnât really matter. Doctor Who has had no end of bad stories merely in itâs TV incarnation (to say nothing of itâs plethora of spin-off media which are all canon to varying degrees) and all those things still happened. But the show is still going strong and hit stratospheric popularity in the mid-late 2000s and early 2010s.
Hell the Simpsons is still going despite there being at least 20 years of mediocre-bad stories.
âI'm going to be honest. I'm not a huge fan of Mary Jane Watson. I don't necessarily have a problem with the character, but I've never really been a fan either. The marriage of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson was done on a whim and many writershated it at the time.â
Oy vey this shit again.
The marriage was not done on a whim. Stan Lee, the creator of Spider-Man wanted it to happen and EIC Jim Shooter decided to synch it up with the comics.
At the time Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz had been building up to Peter and MJâs wedding with the intention of her jilting him.
But the build up from them, and other writers like Peter David, was still there.
Only the outcome changed.
As for this âmany writers hated itâ thing, the article links to ONE writerâs opinion on the subject.
If we actually look at the majority of Spider-Man writers to have written for Spider-Man during and after the marriage we see most of them were okay or neutral on the subject.
David Michelinie wasnât thrilled with it, but he came on side eventually. Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz were the same. Matt Fraction wasnât too sure about it but wasnât innately against it either. Nick Spencer clearly liked it. Howard Mackie has given statements indicating he was against it at a time but might over all be neutral. Roberto Aguirre Sacasa has never said anything on the subject to my knowledge but his work implies heâs supportive of it. Mark Millar has never said anything on the subject. J.M. DeMatteis, J. Michael Straczynski and Peter David have been outright supportive of it, as was probably Todd McFarlane, Jodie Houser and for sure artist Ryan Stegman.
Oh and Stan Lee the creator of Spider-Man. Letâs not leave him out.
Compared to that we have Roger Stern, Terry Kavanagh, John Byrne, Paul Jenkins, Gerry Conway and Jim Owsley who were against it.
Conwayâs opposition was possibly due to his going through a divorce at the time. Sternâs opposition was based upon his idea of MJ being stuck in the Silver Age but he wasnât innately opposed to Spider-Man marrying in general. Jim Owsley on his linked to blog (where he routinely lies, including claiming Ron Frenz was potentially suicidal when he never was) had a stupid sexist rationale for disliking the marriage. John Byrne is creepy shithead who wouldâve preferred Spider-Man was dating underage girls anyway and along with Terry Kavanagh never wrote a good Spider-Man story in his life. In Kavanaghâs case he never even wrote a good story in his life.
So of all those people only Paul Jenkins dislike of it wasnât unjustified. But he was an outlier.
Every other writer either liked it, was neutral on it, disliked it for nonsensical reasons or didnât know about good storytelling in the first place to make citing them worth a damn in the first place.
And aside from aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall of this...does the author realize Peter and MJâs relationship and MJâs whole character doesnât begin and end in the years they were married?
Like he talks about their marriage as though this being bad proves their relationship and her character is bad when there was 20+ years of MJ prior to that.
âI think Peter has had better love interests over the years, including Gwen Stacy. â
And the author would be wrong.
Gwen Stacy is neither better nor more interesting that Mary Jane.
Thatâs why THEY KILLED HER!
âPart of that is giving Mary Jane something to do. She's been a model and an actress, but the books were always more concerned with the superheroics, so you never really got the chance to feel her drive there. She was a nightclub owner, but again, the same problem persisted. â
Except Spider-Man stories ARE NOT MORE CONCERNED WITH THE SUPERHEROICS!
My God. How the fuck can someone have read any number of Spider-Man stories and not realized, oh yeah, the book is about Peterâs life over all and his normal life is as if not MORE important than whoever he is punching this month.
By this logic Harry Osborn, Aunt May, Flash Thompson and literally every supporting cast member who isnât J. Jonah Jameson or like Ashley goddam Kafka, is a better supporting character than Mary Jane.
Mary jane doesnât have to be involved in the superhero side of Peterâs life because the Spider-Man series isnât about that. Itâs about his life in general and sometimes one blurs over into the other but not always and frankly if you go by the classic stories not even most of the time.
Thatâs why on the occasions where such things did happen it was a big deal.
âOther than supporting Peter Parker, what did Mary Jane Watson really want? â
To be an actress
To be taken seriously as more than a model
To support her sick cousin
To earn a psychology degree
To avoid commitment
âSometimes she just wanted Peter to not be Spider-Man anymore, which is a downer of a conflict.â
This is another lie.
The ONLY times during which Mary jane didnât want Peter to be Spider-Man were during the Clone Saga when she was pregnant, heâd retired and Ben Reilly was the new Spider-Man and new main character (meaning there was no issue there) or during the Mackie/Byrne reboot where she was being written deliberately out of character as an act of sabotage.
Unless the author meant like in specific stories where Peter was injured and she didnât want him to go off and be Spider-Man at that moment or in that specific context, as opposed to wholesale retiring. At which point...how is this a downer conflict? Itâs a starkly realistic and emotionally justified conflict in a series built off the back of realistic emotions because Spider-Man is a human drama and soap opera FFS!
âSometimes, things are good... ...sometimes, they're not.
Go to the article itself and notice the second image the author uses.
If youâve ever encountered similar lines of anti-MJ/anti-marriage argument before those panels, that artwork or stuff similar to it might strike you as familiar.
Why?
Because itâs from the exact same story. Maximum Carnage.
Every asshole who tries to make this argument uses Maximum Carnage, one of the worst Spider-Man stories over all to bolster their claims. The repetition of scenes from this story (and usually the same scene) is telling because itâs either cherry picking from a notoriously bad story and pretending like it represented a norm (and removes it from important context FYI) or...these people donât know what they are talking about and just parrot one another with the same examples.
âOver in the Ultimate Comics line, writer Brian Michael Bendis would give Mary Jane a career choice that dovetails well with superheroes: journalist. See, the reason DC Comics' Lois Lane works is her driving motivationâto be the best investigative journalist in the worldâputs her on a path to run into Clark Kent and Superman. â
Yeah and the problem is that MJ worked as well for decades even when she wasnât a journalist. Shit she worked for the majority of Ultimate Spider-Manâs run prior to her becoming a journalist!
Yeah, remember that tiny piece of vital information the author conveniently ignored. For MOST of Ultimate Spider-Manâs 10 year tenure with Peter Parker as the lead character Mary Jane wasnât a journalist!
Shit, she worked for her school paper so the idea that it made her involvement in heroics more organic is pretty bullshit.
More importantly prior to her journalist job Ultimate MJâs role and function within the narrative was strikingly similar to her 616 married counterpart!
âHer intense curiosity and lack of self-preservation makes her endearing; the audience knows what she wants and the lengths she'll go to get it.â
And MJâs goofy deameanor at times, inner strength, sociable nature, insecutirs, struggles with guilt and commitment make her endearing.
âSo Insomniac decided to take the Ultimate version of Mary Jane and play it up to Lois Lane levels. She's an investigative journalist at the Daily Bugle searching for more on the recently-arrested Wilson Fisk. Her own adventures put her on the path to meeting with Spider-Man. You get that moment where they're both asking, "What are you doing here?" and you realize there's old, unmentioned romantic history. MJ already knows Peter is Spider-Man and she's fine with that side of his life. â
And it works great...in a video game setting where you truly are spending 90% of your time in the middle of action and the plot needs to be entirely in service of that plot.
But in the context of a comic book more about the normal lives of the characters than revolving around superheroics and starring the most famous character (whoâs clad in red and blue) of one of the two biggest companies in the world MJ as a journalist would die on itâs ass because it WOULD just be derivative of Lois Lane.
I mean Jesus Christ people also deride Black Cat and Norman Osborn for being derivative of Catwoman and Norman Osborn even though they deviate in big ways. But if Spider-Man major love interest/wife literally also became an investigative journalist and primarily interacted with Spider-Man (at least within the context of the main plot) within that role it would literally just be Lois Lane.
âThis Mary Jane's problem is one of equal partnership. She's a great, inventive journalist. Sure, she could die on an investigation, considering where she decides to focus her talent, but in her mind, that's no different from a police officer or firefighter dying in the line of duty. The truth is important. This flips the dynamic a bit; her problem is that Peter doesn't acknowledge that she's also right where she needs to be. She's his equal, even if she doesn't have fancy Spider-powers. â
MJ was Peterâs equal in the comics too.
Being someoneâs equal as a person doesnât mean doing the same job as them, working in the same line of work or directly contributing to the superhero action.
You just need to be an equal in your personality and agency which in-universe MJ has had.
This is to say nothing of how by this logic Alfred, Batmanâs FATHER FIGURE, is not his equal or how Ganke Lee in Miles Morales comics wouldnât really be HIS equal either or how, again, Spider-Man stories do not innately codify the superheroics as MORE important than the normal life stuff.
  âIt's a great change.â
Yes it is, in the context of a video game.
âThis Mary Jane is funny, a bit headstrong, and leaps sometimes before she looks. â
You mean just like comic book Mary Jane.
â Comic Mary Jane has many of these facets, but it's tough to get a grasp on what she really wants outside of Peter. â
Unless youâve literally read the issue immediately after Peter meets her where she makes it clear she wants to be an actress. Or read any comic in the interim where she wants to have financial security, be taken seriously, reconcile with her family, indulge in/get over her commitment issues, help her cousin, learn psychology, etc.
âJournalism doesn't have to be the answer, but there needs to be one that intersects with the lives of Peter and Spider-Man. â
No there doesnât. In the real world couples jobs donât have to intersect. Many of Peterâs supporting cast members do not have jobs that intersect with his life outside of the fact that they are his friends and/or family. This is true of other heroes too.
MJ being Peterâs friend/girlfriend/wife is enough of a reason for her to intersect in his life and be featured in this stories, beyond that she can be given subplots of her own just like many other characters had.
Two of the best subplots in Spider-Man involved Flash Thompson. One of them was his and Betty Brantâs affair and the other was his struggles with alcoholism. These were problems that for the longest time Peter wasnât even aware of but they were compelling and entertaining unto themselves because Flash was a great character and we cared because he was Peterâs friend. However these stories also at no point ever really involved Spider-Manâs life. It was strictly confined to the problems of Peter Parkerâs world.
MJâs job can be much the same.
MJâs normalacy is in fact a MAJOR reason why so many fans love her so much and why so many people love Spider-Man himself.
Why make her more like Lois and her dynamic like that of Lois and Superman, those two characters who famously are awesome but also not as relatable as Spider-Man and MJ!
âWith Insomniac's Mary Jane, everything just clicks into place.â
As would it for comic book MJ if you bothered to pay attention.
âThe problem here is Marvel never sat down and explained how this worked. Again, Peter's death was the impetus for Miles becoming Spider-Man. In the Ultimate comics, he had the powers long before he actually put on the costume. Miles' creator Brian Michael Bendis never sat down and explained the new backstory before he jumped over to DC Comics. We don't know the specifics of why this version of Miles took up the mantle, the question of his motivations always remains a bit fuzzy.â
No it isnât. Miles wasnât REBOOTED into the 616 universe. He was integrated in with everyoneâs memories altered around.
His backstory was the same as in the Ultimate Universe he just literally, physically migrated over.
Miles motivations were thus the same albeit undermined from a creative POV.
âWhen the title of Spider-Man was passed on in the Ultimate universe, that made sense. But the question the Prime universe needs to answer now is: Why do they share the title? â
Because that was Milesâ chosen title and Peter gave his blessing for it and on a meta-level it is intended to represent how anyone can be Spider-Man.
âPeter has offered it to Miles, but why does this version of Miles want it in return?â
Because Ultimate Peter died and Miles wanted to honour him.
It isnât the case of he just ALWAYS existed in this universe. You cannot time travel back like 15 years into the 616 Marvel universe and locate baby Miles Morales He literally, physically doesnât exist there.
âThat's really why these new versions of the characters work. I can see what they offer Peter and what he offers them in return. â
Comic book MJ offered Peter a human connection, a friend, a confidant, someone to support him and companionship.
Why does she need to offer any more than that when in real life no one is hinging their deeper relationships upon the basis of what that person does for them in terms of their jobs or hobbies.
âAnd that facet is sometimes missing in the Marvel Comics iteration. â
 No it isnât.
âI see what they offer Peter, but sometimes it's hard to see what they get out of the relationship.â
MJ gets a friend, companion, someone who understands and supports her, someone who helps emotionally fulfil her and make her a better person and sometimes someone who can help her in times of emotional and physical crises.
âGreat artists steal, Marvel. The comic publisher is already bringing Insomniac's Spider-Man into the the universe with the upcoming Spider-Geddon crossover (shown below). Now it's time to steal certain facets of the storytelling for the universe. Marvel Comics is stuck with the millstone of continuity around its neck, but that doesn't mean there aren't new directions the company can move Spider-Man and his amazing friends toward. â
Marvel has never rebooted itâs history since 1961.
DC has done so in varying ways 5 or 6 times.
 Marvel outsells DC.
Of all iconic characters owned by DC, Batmanâs history has altered the least from one reboot into the next.
Batman outsells every other DC character.
In the 1980s Marvel fans had no access to the internet, few information books or other resources and few reprints with which to catch up upon the 20-25 years worth of history for the characters and of the few resources they did have not everyone had access to them.
Marvel comics sold more physical copies back then than they do now.
The highest selling Marvel titles of the 1980s and 1990s were the X-Men related titles which had objectively the most complicated, convoluted and least accessible .
So STFU about too much continuity oh my God!

Mary Watson
general opinion: fall in a hole and die | donât like them | eh | theyâre fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would banghogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff (no hablo Harry Potter)best quality: loving and not possessiveworst quality: mishandling life-or-death situationsship them with: aah... Johnbrotp them with: Sherlockneeds to stay away from: David the shoulder to cry onmisc. thoughts: When it comes to Mary, it's important to remember that no one is only 100% good or evil. She's neither Saint Mary nor The Villain. I love it that she didn't try to separate John and Sherlock and actually tried to make them be friends again. I like it that after the first shock in HLV, she behaved like an agent and revealed nothing to Sherlock. 'Seriously, Shezza?' and 'it's a tiny bit sexy' are other fun Mary stuff, as well as being such a troll ('Miss me?'). Mary and Sherlock as brotp warms my cold heart. And God, I love the plot twist of her being an assassin. About the shooting and being such a creep afterwards, I'm halfway between the apologists and the team jlock. What biased people don't realise, there was a mirror behind Sherl, so the giant face-licker saw Mary's face. I think that sly smile of hers was for CAM, whom she couldn't kill then. Having another pressure point was a big problem, for sure the abnormally tall face fetishist was going to be harder to kill, so she shot Sherlock to a) show heâs not her pressure point, b)get the hell out of there.
Was it really âsurgeryâ? Most likely, Mary was prepared to sacrifice Sherlock and his surviving was just a bonus. Did she threaten him in the empty houses? I think she did. Was it bc she's evil and wanted to kill her husband's gay lover? I don't think so. Again, she's an agent who worked for the CIA. Leaving talkative witnesses behind is never good for people like Mary. She knew she fucked up and her priority was to a) keep her secret identity from John, b) get rid of the face freak (definitely not 'save and protect John from the fireplace pisser'). Sherlock, who would totally tell John everything and/or try to help, was an obstacle, even though she liked him. I did like her in HLV, the coin scene was great. What's important is that Sherlock forgave her and liked her so much that he wanted to prevent her death. But dear God above, how many times did she mention the hat in TLD? I think it was 4-5. Shut the hell up, Mary, fuck that hat. Jesus, that was so annoying. How did team silly hat is hetero-normativity survive that? Â
I do believe Mary was killed off because she accidentally became a better, more interesting Watson than John. Also, I like her part in TLD Adlock bit and her wanting to know who else didnât like her in the wedding episode. Is she 100% good person and would I want to meet her in real life? God, no. Is she an interesting character, fun to watch? Duh. Would a perfectly sweet and innocent Mary still be hated by the gay fans for cockblocking Jawn and Sherl? Yes. Admit that, Mary haters, itâs time.
My fav crap meta about her is that 1) ACDs Mary was invented by Watson to be safely gay with Holmes and 2) s.4 Mary storyline was forced by Amanda Abbington or inspired by the end of her relationship with Martin Freeman. Obviously.
Thank you.
