Summary of Stay: Paris is one of my fave cities and I wanted to return for a few days before Christmas. One of the things that was most important to me was location - and it’s one of the biggest draws of the Nolinski. The location is perfect - and I was able to walk everywhere imaginable. The hotel’s location is ideal if you want to be near shopping, museums, galleries, restaurants and the landmarks.
Highlight of the Room: Beyond the sheer space of the suite, the highlight has to be the comfort. From the thick rugs, to the brilliant light, the suite was very comfortable. It was hard to get out of the bed each morning because it was so inviting and plush. People often say they don’t understand why I spend so much money on hotels when I hardly spend any time at them. Well - 1) I do spend time at the hotel, and 2) If my time at the hotel is limited, I want to ensure I feel as rested as possible so I can make the most of the city. And I feel that with the Nolinski, I woke up so rested, recharged and relaxed that I was able to conquer Paris each and every day.
Highlight of the Hotel: While I’m tempted to say the staff, I have to give a shout out to the pool. It really was an incredible place to unwind. The ambient lighting made it very special - and the fact that this was a very “grown-up” pool, made it extra relaxing. The pool is part of their spa, so everything was kept very quiet and chill. It was very easy to lose yourself and just float away. They also had saunas, but I didn’t use them personally. After soaking, I put my feet up and just took some time to decompress in the lounging area. When you’re here, it’s hard to believe that you’re in one of the busiest cities in the world.
Highlight of the Stay: The hotel really took good care of me. And when you’re traveling, it’s nice to encounter a hotel that thoroughly takes care of their guests. One night at dinner, I asked the server if I should get the steak or the cheese plate - and he remarked that they are both incredible. He made the suggestion to have the steak for dinner and have the cheese plate sent up to my room. Which I did - and which allowed me to enjoy both. There were always staff to assist with directions or assisting me with packages. I had purchases delivered directly to the hotel and they were all waiting for me in my room upon returning. The stay was seamless.
Drawbacks: There were only a couple suggestions for the hotel:
Pre-arrival, it was difficult to coordinate events with the concierge. Once I arrived, they were incredible.
The closets - they were very small, and while I don’t think they could add more closets, a set of drawers could provide some more needed room
Lastly, if suites had butler service, this hotel could easily be the best in Paris. When thinking of their service level, it really was the only missing piece.
Must-Do:
The pool - you must check it out. Morning or night - your body will thank you.
I am often reluctant to eat at hotels but I was very pleasantly surprised at the Nolinksi. The Restaurant was pure Parisian elegance mixed with art-deco. My pepper-crusted steak flambed in cognac was a gourmet’s dream. Worth every Euro!
Shop! The shops near Vendome and St. Honore are only minutes away. Galleries Lafayette are just down the street. This is the perfect location if you’re a shopper.

Brooklyn, New York
40°39'0”N and 73°56'59”W
So much has transpired since we last updated you all. In reflection we were in a cocoon, turning into mush, and then emerging. Our wings are still drying, but we made it. We landed on our feet in NYC and still have the strength to smile. For those who don’t know yet, Mary has transitioned her name to Oliver. We are also transitioning the blog to Tumbler.
We can’t dive into NYC without sharing that a piece of our Volcano heart has transitioned to the next realm. Aunty Nona, the driving force behind our business, wedding celebration, and countless other social goods is no longer with us. She was fierce and we are so grateful for the opportunity to have spent time learning from her. She shared so many lessons and the most indelible: when working for the good of others sometimes things get in the way. When that happens you tell um “get out of my fucking way.”
There is no place in the world like NYC. Truly. The Mother of Exiles stands in her harbor, the huddled masses yearn to breathe free on her sidewalks, and the wretched refuse - oh the wretched refuse that many of us descend from is inescapable. A dear east-coast friend said New Yorkers are not nice, but they are kind. We completely agree. 5 months has found us hazed, dropped to our knees, blessed, surrounded in love, amazed, disgusted, terrified, freezing, and dripping in sweat. This is a city of dramatic contrasts and the trick is to master your balance. Here is how we have done it so far:
NYC appears to be the first landing place for many folks coming to the United States for the first time. Returning to the US after selling everything and traveling abroad for an extended time pivots one to a place of great empathy for those just arriving. The internet will have you convinced you can’t get an address without a lease and in NYC you can get a lease without a salary 40X the rent (which is often $3K+ a month). We learned that you just have to be nice to the folks at the post office. With a PO Box secured (eerily similar to our Volcano PO Box number) our next stop was the NY Public Library. A complete gem in a city full of financial mirages. A NYC library card opens a Pandora's box of resources including free access to museums, career support, bathrooms, and more primary and secondary sources than we could ever even imagine.
Hold the celebration for a minute. The city of immigrants also has hucksters and enforcements that will crash a reality in mere hours. You see, when we got to NYC we found a place to rent on Furnished Finders. Lots of hubbub about short term rentals being illegal, so we made sure the landlady lived in the building and we rented for longer than 30 days. All of that ended up being for not as we discovered, by way of a surprise visit by the NYC Department of Buildings, that our cozy little apartment was super illegal. We were 100% below grade. People have died in similar apartments throughout NYC by being trapped in fires and floods. We already experienced two floods in our short time. Our land lady tried to tell us we could stay. It was ok. Krystal did research and a guy on the phone said “DOB doesn’t work on the weekend, but they will be back on Monday to paste a physical vacate order.” Time to go! The Universe lined us up with friends who were headed out of town and needed a cat sitter and two younger girls looking for a 3rd roommate on Myrtle Ave. in the Hasidic neighborhood. We landed. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked. A month of sleeping in a room facing possibly one of the busiest streets in Brooklyn, tucked in the heart of a failing migrant resettling program, and next door to the Hasidic event center made for a really long month. After a bit of suffering we decided to take our dinner show on the road and enjoyed picnics throughout NYC in order to avoid total kitchen and home chaos.
A result of some portions of our hazings granted us a free pass to Cornwall, Connecticut for a few nights. Unlike the majority of the United States in NYC you can reliably get places on the train. We hopped on a few and were whisked away to a sleepy New England hamlet. Steve, one of our hosts, was driving us around and said “this is where the missionary school was. There is the plaque.” Reading slowly we realized we, somehow, ended up in THE town where the ABCFM missionary originated. ABCFM were the missionaries who indoctrinated the Hawaiian Islands with Christinaity. It all started in, what is to this day, a tiny village. Totally freaked out, but not surprised by the synchronicity we headed to the local library for more information. We went to Henry ʻŌpūkahaʻia’s grave and marveled at just how small the world is. Note that his iwi (bones) have been returned to Napoʻopoʻo on the Island of Hawai’i.
We made it through the dregs of shit because of many factors, but the most sassy was Hattie, the black cat. Hattie likes humans and we were grateful her humans trusted us to care for her while they were away.
Speaking of humans - so many folks have come into our lives. New and old friends have been making their way through NYC and our hearts in the past few months. We have lots of space for guests now, so let us know if you are coming. We would love to see you!
Why on earth would anyone put up with such righteous hazing? If for nothing else, the food. Tunisian dates in a Queens bodega are what inspired us to move here and the city has yet to disappoint. Georgia, Philippines, Albania, Sicily, Kosher, Bahrain…you name it there are folks in NYC making the food and speaking the language.
Spring in NYC is pretty spectacular as well. The tulips, cherry blossoms, and hints of spring were really special. And we, as unsuspecting new New Yorkers, didn’t know that sweltering summer was right around the corner. So we really enjoyed the days as they slowly warmed.
Krystal has been busy digging for family records in the NY Public Library Picture Collection and was happy to find originals of some images showing where her great grandmother was handed over to nuns in Palermo. This inspired a fellowship application that was not granted. We are just not NYC enough yet. The concentration of 8 million people pushes human creativity to the absolute edge in order to stand out. We are getting there!
She also landed a job as the Associate Director of School and Teacher Programs at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park. She overlooks Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty while attempting to navigate an ever-shifting field of societal chaos.
Oliver has been dusting off manuscript records and starts as a supervisor for a feminist black owned bookstore in Crown Heights next week. She is also growing chives and hyssop from seed on the south-facing window sills. She found a skateboard in the basement and we have health insurance again.
Our new home is a testament to our house karma. It's a unique Brooklyn solution and we are super grateful. We are in a cohousing set up in a 4 story Brownstone. We have our own 1 bedroom apartment and share the first floor, laundry, and garden with three other folks. The house was built in 1871 and the main newspaper articles about the address mention funerals in the parlor. She has been here for a long time. Long enough to be located on a street named for a slave owner in a historic black neighborhood. We are making friends with the spirits and cleaning out old energy. If this all goes to shit we are going to start an energetic cleaning and decluttering business. It seems to be our calling right now.
NYC is full of more adventures that we can count. Museum archives, eclipses in cemeteries, really old and forgotten buildings, famous paintings in real life, live music, Garibaldi hide outs, and epic old maps. Every day is an adventure and one must be discerning as the capitalists are hiding in plain sight. Today we are writing this blog instead of marching in NYC Pride because we checked the 990 for NYC Pride. 8.5 million dollars last year…and one of the main sponsors is Target. Not sure what Target looks like in the rest of the country, but here they lock up toothpaste and laundry detergent.
The greatest NYC adventure has been the privilege of knowing dear Julia. Julia has been our patron saint (she is also Hattie’s mom) and she took us to her family's beach house on the North Fork of Long Island. Wow. This is how one lives in NYC! It was the greatest gift to slow way down, watch the sun and the sea, and eat really, really good food. Oliver also logged the first swims of the season in the Long Island Sound.
Julia also made sure we saw our first Broadway play! We caught Ani DiFranco in Hadestown and now we are hooked! The production was awe inspiring, heart wrenching, laughing, crying, and reminiscing as Ani’s voice pulled out the baby dyke memories in our minds.
A reflection on Ani the folks singer to Ani as Persephone:
“am i headed for the same brick wall is there anything i can do about anything at all except go back to that corner in manhattan and dig deeper, dig deeper this time down beneath the impossible pain of our history beneath unknown bones beneath the bedrock of the mystery beneath the sewage systems and the path train beneath the cobblestones and the water mains beneath the traffic of friendships and street deals beneath the screeching of kamikaze cab wheels beneath everything i can think of to think about beneath it all, beneath all get out beneath the good and the kind and the stupid and the cruel there's a fire that's just waiting for fuel”
“Sister, even at my age I believe the world can change Sister, this is how it starts A change of heart.”
We believe the world can still change. It IS changing. We are grateful for the youngest voters in our midst for keeping us rooted in the truth under the hood of this crumbling democracy. If New York City is the front line of cultural and political change in the US, fasten your seat belts. We don’t know what the US version of the Storming of the Bastille will be, we just know it is coming. And we also know what Aunty Nona taught us and we will work until our very last breath to make the world a better place.

Siobhan Bracken: I am from Mentor, Ohio and I think the best Main Street in Mentor is Mentor Avenue. This is one of the most travel roads in Mentor, it hold most of the retail, restaurant, and bars. Mentor Avenue is not very walkable, it does have side walks lining the entire street but the blocks are very long and the buildings are set back far from the road and sidewalk. Additionally, there are bus stops along the street but very few have shelters. Mentor Avenue is a four lane road and runs the entire length of the municipality and is technically US route 20. Mentor Avenue has a historical district of Mentor and holds the majority of restaurants and shops in the area. Additionally, it has numerous grocery stores on the road. Mentor Avenue is the best example of a main street of my hometown Mentor, a large suburb of Cleveland. https://www.britannica.com/place/Mentor-Ohio
Trinity Finch: I am from Springfield, Ohio and just south is a village called Yellow Springs. I worked in Yellow Springs for most of my time in high school and some of the time in college. The Main Street there would be Xenia Ave, specifically the strip between Corry St. and Glen St. There are a number of small locally owned shops ranging from a grocery store, coffee shops, a flower shop, and art stores. The main street consists of four total lanes, with the two in the middle being driving lanes and the two on either side being parking lanes. I would like to add that Yellow Springs is surrounded by three national parks, as well as one of the longest bike trails in Ohio, so this village makes efforts to make sure that pedestrian quality is above average with wide sidewalks, awnings and trees that provide shade to those walking, crosswalks with flashing lights and law enforced speed reduction once entering the main street area. In the warm seasons almost every shop has their door open, restaurants have seating outside in the shade, and pop up shops are on every corner. Throughout all seasons, cold or hot, you will always see people out and socializing with shop owners, meeting up with friends, and meeting new people on the street.

Kayra Koprulu: I am from Cleveland Ohio. Now I am saying Cleveland because that is what most say when generally from that area, but I live in the city of Westlake which is probably around 30 minutes to downtown Cleveland. I live on Crocker Road. It is called Crocker road because there is a huge outdoor entertainment center right next to my neighborhood called Crocker Park. Crocker park is a very popular shopping and dining center. There are many different types of clothing stores, furniture stores, restaurants, coffee shops, and even grocery stores. Therefore, a lot of the population who live in and or around Westlake go there and they do this by taking Crocker Road. The outside of my neighborhood complex always has the busiest street, sometimes even more than downtown. There is always some sort of traffic, especially because a lot of people take that road to get to a variety of different places, not just Crocker Park. Alongside of this road, there is a big well known nursing home, restaurants (that are not actually inside of Crocker Park), fast food chains, and lots of neighborhoods and houses. All which bring together the conclusion of attracting people and to a busy street. In my opinion, most importantly, there are walkable sidewalks all along the road. They are bigger than normal sidewalks which I think is nice, because it is meant for bikers to use as well. This makes Crocker road sustainable for the majority of the public because they can get to their food, clothing, etc.. needs by walking or biking. I personally love living right by Crocker park and on Crocker road because I can walk when the weather is nice and it gives a sense of city life due to the high density in that area.
Crocker Park, Westlake Ohio
I am using the Short North Arts district from my hometown Columbus, Ohio as a good example of a main street. A successful main street should cater towards pedestrians, encourage a thriving social life and incorporate many mixed use building and planning techniques. I chose the Short North Arts District and specifically N High street which is the hot spot for many young college kids, and locals who live near this area, while additionally attracting people from the suburbs or travelers. If you had one day in Columbus you would want to spend it in and around this area. There are many unique shops such as thrift stores, local businesses and restaurants and chains that draw in people at all times of the day. This lively street is definitely catered towards pedestrians and the quality of their walking and browsing experience while allocating for the through traffic and buses. There are many plazas in this area and the use of outdoor seating, parklets, wide sidewalks, and general greenery that provides a median to the busy road makes it easy to enjoy whatever activity you're looking to do. The amount of lanes and parking spaces allocated is purposeful and nothing feels too crowded, which is important for pedestrian quality.
Gabriel Manzano
I am from Bethesda, Maryland which is located about 20 minutes from DC. A main street in my town is Wisconsin Ave which is a popular commercial and cultural street. Wisconsin ishome to a mix of businesses, including shops, restaurants, cafes, art galleries, and other services, which also makes it a popular Third Place. Many of the buildings along the street are multi-story, with retail or commercial space on the ground floor and offices or apartments above. The buildings are well-maintained and feature a variety of architectural styles, from modern glass and steel to more traditional brick and stone. Wisconsin with sidewalks dedicated to pedestrian crossings. The street is populated with plenty of street furniture to make it comfortable for pedistrians to walk and spend time there, and there is a lot of greenery to make the walk pleasant and enjoyable.

Mess Is Mine
Hi again babes. I’ve got something for you; it’s a single dad!harry (and single mum!yn). This is something I never thought I would even consider writing (because the thought of the MC having kids not with Harry kills me... I know 😂) but the idea has grown on me and I’ve finally got my shit together and put it down in writing. I think this is one of my favourite things that I’ve ever written so far so maybe you won’t like it but eh I’ll just post it anyway. Right I’m gonna stop rambling. Tell me what you think!
YN had it all; a cosy three bedroom house in the heart of Notting Hill (and by cosy it actually is cosy as in warm, comfy and inviting and not just some word a landlord would say to cover the fact that the place is either cramped, falling apart or has never been updated), a fulfilling job, a drop-dead gorgeous, loving husband with really nice icy blue eyes (and arms and broad shoulders and thighs and… she could go on forever but let’s not dwell on that right now) and the sweetest gurgling little baby boy. People say he’s YN’s twin only with his daddy’s eyes and hair colour.
Two years later, with a baby girl in tow, the cosy little family of three grows into a lively family of four. It all seems perfect, doesn’t it? Their marriage was perfect. They were what people would call the typical Hallmark family.
But nothing truly is perfect, isn’t it? Happily ever after only does exist in children’s tales. With two children, they were no longer “that cute couple plus baby”, they turned into a proper family overnight. James and YN were less of a couple and more of a mum and dad 24/7, which took a strain on their relationship. And as if that wasn’t enough, James was also in the run for a partnership in his firm, which would make him the youngest senior partner in Addleshaw Goddard, one of the most prestigious law firms in the City. Being one of the top lawyers in the City and working with high-profile clients such as large commercial companies or financial institutions, James had already been working long, unsocial hours. But that was nothing compared to the hours after he knew he was in the running for partnership. He basically lived in his office. He took more big cases to put his name on the map so weekends off were merely a myth. He got what he wanted in the end, full equity partnership in Addleshaw Goddard, six figure salary, £500 an hour, but little did he know that in order to get what he had always wanted, he had to lose what was matter the most.
***
“What? Now?” James lets out a heavy sigh. “I can’t now, YN. Av’ got to see a client at lunch. But I’ve already cleared my schedule from 3:30 to 4:30 so I’m still picking up Finn.”
This time, YN lets out a heavy sigh. She knows that she can’t get pissed at her ex-husband for not being able to pick up their three year old daughter at her nursery. It’s her fault after all; she’s the one who forgot that the nursery only opens for half-day on that particular Thursday. Pippa’s teacher had to call her to remind her to pick up the little girl. “Alright, thanks anyway.”
“Anytime. Give her a kiss f’me,” James asks her.
“Will do. Bye,” YN pinches the bridge between her nose as she hangs up the call. Glancing at the clock on the wall for a second, she tidies up some scattered papers and puts it aside as she stands up and walks towards the lift.
“YN!” One of her colleagues catches her as she waits for the lift. “The guests just got here and they’re all in their dressing rooms. Lisa already looked over the script a few times and she said everything’s good. Oh no, wait, I think they’re gonna need to look over the red chair again but other than that it’s fine. And- wait, are you going somewhere?”
“Yeah. Pippa’s nursery is closed at half twelve today so I need to go and pick her up now,” she answers as she takes another glance at the Kate Spade on her wrist. She knows she needs to go really soon. “I won’t be long but just in case anything happens before I get back, find Mike or Tom. Thanks!”
“Ah, alright then,” the crew nods at her. “See ya!”
How could she go from Wood Lane to Portobello Road then back to Wood Lane in less than half an hour, she’d never know. It’s in the middle of the day, mind you. But anyway, YN is back at the studio with her very excited three year old who gets to go with her mummy to work. No doubt, her older brother would be very jealous when he finds out later.
It’s not the first time YN brings her child to work, she had brought even both of them a few times before but she never brought them on Thursday. Thursday is always her busiest day at work because they’re filming the show every Thursday and not Friday when it airs even though the show is filmed as live. As a production coordinator, YN needs to be on her feet most of the time, making sure that everything is smooth sailing.
“Hey! Who have we got ‘ere, eh?” Elliot, one of the camera operators, greets them with a smile as they walk into the set. He looks down at the little girl with a teasing smirk. “D’you work ‘ere, miss?”
The little girl shakes her head and giggles. “No.”
“Pippa!” One of the crews, Chloe, calls her name as she walks towards them and the little girl smiles, turning around to see who has just called her. “Golly! Look at how big you’re getting, sweetheart! That’s a very pretty dress you’re wearing, can I borrow it sometime?”
The little girl let out another fit of giggles. “It won’t fit!”
“Ah! Too bad, s’pretty.”
“YN,” another crew walks towards them, but calling her name this time instead of her little girl. “We’re going in five and Mike asked for you.”
“Ah shoot,” she mutters under her breath, realising that there were things that still need to be done and she’s only got five minutes left. Even less because she needs to find her boss first because apparently he’s been looking for her. “C’mere darlin,”
“I’ve got spare time if you want me to watch her?” Chloe offers. “Props all done for now until red chair and it won’t be for a while.”
“You won’t mind?” YN looks up at Chloe as if she were Mrs Claus and Chloe shakes her head, smiling as she takes the little girl’s hand. “Oh Chloe, you’re an angel! Thanks! Pippa darlin’, mummy needs to work so you’ll stay with Chloe for a bit, alright? Be a good girl and listen to Chloe.”
Knowing her daughter is in good hands, she crosses the list of things that she needs to do before they start filming without worry. Fortunately for them the guests are wonderful this week—yes, some guests could be a pain in the arse. One time some Hollywood A-List (YN truly believes that the A stands for arsehole) demanded not one, not two but TEN dressing room. That’s right, TEN.
YN is still supervising the set as they film when she sees Chloe walks in without her daughter. She knows that someone probably calls her to prep the set for the red chair segment but she thought Chloe was just going to drop Pippa with her before she started working. “YN!” Chloe calls her as she walks towards her. “We bumped into Harry Styles’s daughter in the hallway earlier with her nan. Pippa and her have been playing together since then. I asked Pippa to come with me but she refused and Harry’s mum offered to watch her, so I left her in his dressing room.”
“What?” Her eyes widen in surprise. Her daughter? Playing in the dressing room?
“I’m so sorry. I could go back and-“
“No, no, it’s fine,” YN cuts her short, smiling so Chloe won’t feel like she’s upset, trying to mask the fact that she’s not actually happy about the situation. It may or may not get her in trouble after all. “Thanks for watching her earlier. I’ll just go and get her now, I don’t want her to bother them.”
“They’re having fun, YN, really. ‘Sides Harry’s mum is so nice,” Chloe reassures her.
“I know she must be, but I’ll just go and check on them regardless,” she insists. “We’re gonna have a break in three anyway.”
Standing in front of Harry’s dressing room, YN takes a deep breath before she knocks on the door. She hears a soft woman’s voice, no doubt Harry’s mum, saying “come in!”, before she opens the door.
“Mummy!” Pippa giggles and runs towards the door with her arms wide open and ready to wrap her mum’s legs.
“Hi darlin’,” she looks down at her daughter before turning her head to smile at Harry’s mum and daughter. “Are you being nice to your new friend?”
“She’s wonderful. They’ve been playing nicely for a while,” Harry’s mum chimes in.
YN apologises. “I’m sorry if she’s disturbed you.”
“Oh, not at all!” She smiles at YN. Her smile is so warm and it reminds her of her own mother. “Pippa is so sweet and they’re having fun. Nothing to apologise, love. In fact I have to thank you for bringing her because otherwise Anya would get bored.”
YN chuckles. “Glad you think so. But I can just take her with me-“
“No, no, no, you can absolutely leave her here. I can watch her. They’re having fun and I don’t want to separate them if you don’t mind,” Anne reassures her, looking at the silly little girls who were giggling at each other as they poke each other’s nose.
“Oh that’s really sweet of you, but are you sure?” She hesitates. “My daughter can be a handful.”
Anne laughs. “She’s been wonderful with me, darlin’. Really, it’s great for my granddaughter to have someone around her age to play with.”
Everyone’s head turns towards the door when they hear someone twisting the handle. The fact that they don’t even bother to knock makes YN realise who’s behind it even before the person enters the room.
“Hello!” Harry smiles as he closes the door behind him. “Got a new friend, huh?”
“Daddy!” Anya beams. “S’my friend, Pippa!”
“Hi Pippa!” Harry sweetly crouches down to be at their level, before reaching out his hand to shake Pippa’s. “I’m Harry, nice to meet you.”
“Hi!” Pippa grins and shakes his hand.
“And you must be Pippa’s mum,” Harry smiles as he stands up and walks towards YN. “Sorry, I’m really terrible with names but you do look familiar. Think I saw you last time I was here as well.”
“I was,” she nods, the corners of her mouth quirk up. She chooses to apologise instead of acknowledging his comment. “I’m sorry my daughter has disturbed yours, she’s not supposed to be here. One of the crews tried to get her to leave but she wouldn’t budge.”
“Oh nonsense!” Harry counters. “I’m sure she’s not, they look like they’re having fun. Just let them play, s’nice for them to have someone around their age. If Pippa weren’t here, my daughter would ask for that, and I’m trying to cut down screen time,” Harry says, tilting his head to where the iPad is sat on the table.
YN chuckles. “Alright then if you’re fine with it too. Mrs-“
“Just call me Anne, dear,”
YN smiles at her. “Anne, would you like to save my number so you can just call me the second Pippa starts being a little terror?”
Anne and Harry laugh. YN thinks that even if you don’t know them, you probably could have guessed that they’re related somehow, seeing how similar their facial features are especially when they’re laughing. “I’m sure she won’t, but I’ll save your number just in case she asks for you.”
***
YN’s phone is buzzing for the second time in the span of five minutes, and the same unknown number appears on the screen. She continues to ignore it; first, because she simply hates answering calls. Second, because it’s bloody Saturday so if it’s turn out to be work related, she’s got an excuse not to pick up. Third, she just really really—and she couldn’t stress this enough—hates answering calls.
James picks the kids up every Saturday morning to spend the whole day with him and brings them back every Sunday morning. It wasn’t easy at first for YN; she ended up on his bed with the kids and him on his own couch more times than she would like but she has grown to be alright having the whole day for herself. In fact, now she likes it. And she won’t say this out loud of course but she secretly looks forward to it.
After the third call ten minutes later goes unanswered, she blindly searches for his phone on the end table next to the couch without tearing her gaze from the magazine that she’s reading. Looking at the screen for a second, she sees a notification for a new voicemail and she plays it.
“Hi YN, it’s Harry. We met the other day at the studio. I’ve got your number from my mum. Anyway, Anya has been asking for Pippa nonstop so I was just wondering if you guys are up for a playdate sometime soon? Please call me back if you’ve got time. Thanks! Have a good weekend!”
She’s just realised that she has been ignoring calls from Harry sodding Styles.
YN sits up straight immediately before she dials his number and he picks it up after only the second ring. “Hi YN! Y’alright?”
“Hello, sorry I didn’t hear when you called earlier. I’m good thanks. You?” YN tries her best to sound nonchalant and it’s going well so far.
“Good, thank you. Nothing to complain really,” he chuckles. “Anyway, I was just wondering if you’re up for a playdate sometime soon?”
“Of course! Pippa would love it. They really did get along the other day,” she agrees and she tries to stifle her giggle. If someone told her last week that Harry Styles would call her and ask for a playdate she would definitely laugh at that person’s face and say, ‘you joking?’.
“Great! When’s best for you?”
“Probably on the weekends. Is that alright for you?” She asks.
“Yeah! How about today? Are you busy? Have you got any plans? Anya and I are just chilling around the house and I could tell that she’s bored. She thinks I’m less fun now that she’s made a friend,” Harry jokes.
YN laughs politely. “I’m sure she thinks you’re just as fun. And I’m not busy right now but my kids are with their dad every Saturday. How about tomorrow? Or if you’re busy maybe next weekend?”
“Oh,” Harry pauses before he continues. “Tomorrow’s perfect! What time is best for you? We haven’t got any plans so we can go anytime.”
“Say 3pm-ish?” She suggests.
“That’s perfect for us!” Harry answers excitedly. “Have you got any idea where we should go? Pippa is basically Anya’s first friend so we’ve never done any playdates before.”
“How about the Heath? Is it too far for you guys?”
“Not at all! We live in Hampstead,” Harry informs her.
“Oh, that’s brilliant! We can meet on the east side of the Heath. See you tomorrow, Harry,”
“See you tomorrow! Bye, have a lovely day YN,” says Harry.
“You too!” YN says before she hangs up.
***
“Anyaaa!” Pippa wiggles her hand out of her mummy’s so she can run towards Anya who’s holding her daddy’s hand. Anya grins at her new friend and the two of them share the sweetest hug like two old mates who haven’t seen each other for years instead of two strangers who have just met three days prior. It really is precious to see their friendship blooms in such a short period of time.
“Hello!” Harry smiles as he walks towards YN and the kids. “Y’alright?”
YN nods and smiles back at him. “Yeah, thanks. How are you?”
“Good! Who’s this little man?” He says as he reaches out his hand towards the little boy. “Hi, I’m Harry. What’s your name?”
The little boy, much shyer than his little sister hesitates to shake Harry’s hand. He looks up at his mum and YN has to nudge his shoulder to make him reaches out his hand and shake Harry’s. “I’m Finn,” he says at last.
“Nice to meet you Finn!” Harry says before he turns his head towards his daughter. “Anya, come and say hi to Pippa’s brother.”
The weather is quite nice for early October. Shorts season is definitely gone but the autumn breeze isn’t quite bone-numbing just yet. The colour of the autumn leaves make the scenery as if it comes out of a painting, it’s simply beautiful wherever they look. They ask if the kids want to go for a walk, but they spot the playground and can’t help but run towards it before Harry and YN have the chance to convince them to go for a walk instead. All three of them.
Trying to be discreet, Harry takes a quick glance at YN’s hand as they walk into the gated area of the playground to see whether or not she has a wedding band on, but he’s not quick enough to fight back the smile that’s creeping onto his face when he realises she hasn’t got one. He recalls back to Thursday when they met at the studio as they filmed The Graham Norton Show and he realised that she didn’t have a ring on that day either. Harry knows that once, maybe she forgot. But twice? She’s not putting that on.
They play with the kids on the playground. Harry patiently helps them to climb onto the slide one by one and YN waits patiently for them at the end of the slide. Then they put them on one of those large net swings where they can put all three of them on one swing and Harry pushes them higher every time, earning a shriek of giggles.
When the kids finally had enough of the playground, Harry and YN take them for a walk towards Parliament Hill. Luckily, Anya warms up rather quickly with Finn as well as Pippa so the three of them have been playing together nicely. Finn walks in front of Harry and YN, holding Pippa’s hand on one of his hands and Anya’s on the other.
“Pippa is so sweet,” Harry begins when he realises that it’s the perfect time to start a proper conversation. It was just not possible when they were looking after the kids on the playground. He looks over to YN and smiles at her.
YN lets out a chuckle. “You’re just being nice, she’s a handful.”
“I’m not!” Harry shakes his head. “She’s really sweet. Finn, too. He’s a great big brother.”
“Well, they have their moments,” YN tells him. “But I’m lucky, I guess. They rarely fight. Pippa can be quite bossy sometimes though, so when they fight it’s usually just because Finn has had enough.”
Harry laughs. “Do you know where she gets that from?”
“Definitely her nan,” YN chuckles.
“Is she close with her nans? Both sides?” Harry asks as he waves at his daughter when she looks over her shoulder to see him. “Do you see them often?”
“Quite close, yeah, and with both sides. Both of our parents live in Surrey, mine in Farnham and James’s in Virginia Water so we see them at least once a month,” YN answers. “How about Anya?”
“Well, she’s named after me mum so she’s definitely her favourite grandchild so far,” Harry grins. “She’s basically Anya’s second parent, my mum.”
“Oh, I thought her mother is Russian!” YN exclaims. “I love her name.”
Harry’s grin widens as he shakes his head. “Thank you. No, my mum’s name is Anne and I want to name my daughter after her, but having two Anne(s) would be confusing. So I opted for another version of Anne.”
“That’s a really gorgeous name. Your mum must be very happy,” YN says as she tucks her hands inside her pockets because it’s getting a bit chilly.
“Definitely made her my mum’s favourite grandchild for sure. Well, she’s currently her only grandchild so that may change sometime soon,” Harry says proudly, grinning even wider. “I’m gonna be an uncle in a few weeks.”
“Oh, congratulations!” YN gasps. “That’s so exciting!”
“It is! We all can’t wait to meet the baby,” Harry adds. “But we don’t know how Anya is gonna take this though. She has been the baby in the family her whole life.”
“I’m sure she’ll be just fine,” YN smiles at Harry reassuringly. “Anya is a sweet girl. Bet she’ll love having a little mate to play with. ‘Sides cousins are the best!”
“You’re right, cousins are the best,” Harry nods, chuckling a little. “Finn and Pippa are lucky. They’ve got built in best friend forever.”
“Both me and their father grew up as an only child so even before we got married we knew we wanted to have at least two. We both hated the fact that we haven’t got any siblings,” YN explains.
“Do you plan to have more?” Harry asks, testing the water as nonchalant as possible. He has an assumption but before he can be sure of himself, he needs to hear it from her.
“Uh,” YN clears her throat, pausing before she continues. “We’re separated.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t know,” Harry mumbles, looking down so YN won’t see the smile that’s creeping onto his face. He doesn’t even know why he’s smiling but he does. And he’s clearly having a hard time trying to hide it. “How different it is with divorce if I may ask?”
“Well, we’re just waiting really. Because one of the grounds for divorce is that we have to live apart for at least two years, and during that time we can get a legal separation. We haven’t reached that mark yet so we still have to wait, soon though. After that we can get decree nisi.” YN doesn’t let Harry respond before she continues. “How about you? I’ve never heard you talk about Anya’s mother but I don’t really follow celebrity gossips,” she chuckles. That’s a lie by the way, she reads glossy magazines like OK! and Hello! quite religiously every week.
“That’s because she’s not in the picture,” Harry smiles, pausing to clear his throat before he continues. “We weren’t together or anything, didn’t even know her to be honest. All I knew was that she got pregnant and that she was planning to give the baby up, so I stepped in and took her. Got sole custody. Nobody really knows about this so I’d appreciate it if you’d just-“
“Don’t worry, not my story to tell,” YN smiles at him reassuringly as she cuts him short. “So you took her on your own since she was born?”
Harry nods proudly. “Right from day one. Her mother didn’t even want to see her after she was born so after I got green light from the peds I took her home straight away. She was only five hours old, looking like a little pink sausage in a blanket,” Harry smiles, clearly reminiscing the day he got to bring his daughter home for the first time.
YN chuckles. “You’re bloody amazing. Just want to say this in case nobody has told you. But I’m sure they do.”
“Thank you,” Harry grins wider. “So are you. We haven’t got the easiest job, us,”
“I mean it Harry,” YN says, stopping abruptly from walking to look at Harry properly in the eyes. “Those early days are rough, I really can’t imagine doing it alone.”
“It was a blur,” he stops walking and lets out a giggle as he looks at YN. “T’was rough. But the good thing about being a single parent right from the start is that you’re used to being alone. I’ve never known what it is like to have a second set of hands. Well I’ve got my mum but it’s still different, I guess. And it must not be the case with you, so you’re the real MVP here,” he ends tamely.
YN lets out a chuckle and they lapse into silence. It’s definitely not an uncomfortable silence. They just look around at the magnificent view before them as they walk around, letting the kids take the lead. It has been a while since both YN and Harry feel at peace. They don’t know it yet, but happiness will be back within their arm's reach very very soon.

otp tag!
oh holy shit this was a whole thing. i was tagged by @rosebarsoap, @solasan, @impossible-rat-babies, and i’m sure others but my activity feed is a disaster i’m sorry if i missed u. thank y’all for the tags!!
pretty sure everyone has been tagged at this point? i can’t keep track anymore, my brain is mush. if you wanna do this, you’re tagged now!
DISAGREEMENTS. Who is more likely to raise their voice?: Neither of them. At most, they get a hard edge to their voice or speak in clipped tones. It's always about risks being taken.
Who threatens to leave but never actually does?: NEITHER OF THEM. There is no way Sparrow or Mason would ever do that.
Who actually keeps their word and leaves?: NOBODY LEAVES.
Who trashes the house?: Who the fuck? NEITHER OF THEM!
Do either of them get physical?: NO.
How often do they argue/disagree?: Very, very, very, rarely. It's always about, like, one of them just fuckin doing something and getting injured or being put in danger and the other panicking about it. Or the two of them ignoring the other one telling them to save somebody else and instead saving each other. LISTEN.
Who is the first to apologize?: They both do, like in the middle of whatever they're talking about. It's always like "I'm sorry but I'd do it again" and the other person just "I know and I love you but I think you shaved 5 years off my life."
SEX. Who is on top? Who is on bottom?: This changes every single time.
Any kinks?: Sparrow is with a vampire. You get one guess. A lot of it is Sparrow.......uh, learning things about themself as this goes so like. They discover they're into choking when Mason puts his hand on their neck one time. Ya know. Absolutely into praise as well.
Who has the strangest desires?: I don't know that either of them really want anything considered strange??? I mean, Sparrow wants him to bite them but I feel like Mason would be onboard so.
Who’s dominant in bed?: Mason probably more often than Sparrow, though it definitely flip flops depending. I feel like once Sparrow is more confident, they'd be more up for taking the lead.
Is head ever in the equation?: Of fucking course it is.
If so, who is better at performing it?: Mason for sure.
Ever had sex in public?: They fucked in a haunted house at a carnival.
Who moans the most?: They're both pretty quiet I think, each of them takes great pride in making the other get vocal. A lot of like, soft moans and grunts and whispers.
Who leaves the most marks?: Mason on Sparrow, bc his whack ass healing makes it impossible for Sparrow to leave marks on him, even though they try.
Who is the more experienced of the two?: Mason for sure. Sparrow hasn't........had a lot of experience.
Do they ‘fuck’ or ‘make love’?: They make love baby. Even when it gets rougher, it’s never really fucking. Well, okay, wait, maybe they fucked in the haunted house....that’s not exactly.....an environment conducive to love making.
How long do they usually last?: A...av....average? I don't know enough about sex for this section.
Rough or soft?: Soft most of the time.
Is protection used?: Like 99% of the time, yeah.
Does it ever get boring?: Lol no. Mason is Mason and Sparrow is always up for an adventure or a challenge.
Where is the strangest place they’d have sex?: THEY. FUCKED. IN. A. HAUNTED. HOUSE. AT. A. CARNIVAL.
Where did they not have sex?: I mean they probably wouldn't fuck, like, in a gas station bathroom?
FAMILY. Do they plan on having children/or have children?: This is so complicated and requires it's own post tbh. Currently, no kids and no plans for kids but it's.......yeah, it's just complicated.
If so, how many children do they want/have?: See above.
AFFECTION. Who likes to cuddle?: Oh they both do, Sparrow initiates it more though.
Who gets naughty in the most inappropriate of places?: Fucking, both of them. Handsy mother fuckers.
Who struggles to keep their hands to themself?: BOTH OF THEM. Early in a relationship, Mason more often, but once Sparrow is comfortable? All bets are off, sorry. Don't go into the library ever.
How long can they cuddle until one becomes uncomfortable?: There is no becoming uncomfortable, they both just pass out. Or Sparrow falls asleep and Mason is legally unable to move, it's like cat rules.
What is their favourite non-sexual activity?: Mason will sit and braid Sparrow's hair while they read. Sparrow likes to just sit with Mason, like leaning on each other, watching a show or talking. Just, they really just like to exist together. Also, fucking off into the woods to go camping.
Where is their favourite place to cuddle?: Literally anywhere, Sparrow is not picky and both of them are so tactile, who gives a shit.
SLEEPING. Who snores?: Neither of them.
If both do, who snores the loudest?: Listen.
Do they share a bed or sleep separately?: Oh they share a bed for sure. If they sleep together, do they cozy up together or lay far apart?: Sparrow clings to Mason like an octopus.
What do they wear to bed?: Nothing, they both sleep naked.
Are either of them insomniacs?: Nah. Sparrow runs fine on like 4-6 hours of sleep though.
Can sleeping pills be found by the bedside?: Nope.
Do they wrap their limbs around each other or just lay side by side?: Sparrow likes to wrap themself around Mason but sometimes they will just lay side by side and like, hold hands.
Who wakes up with bed hair?: They both do, Sparrow's is probably worse considering it's long and slightly wavy.
Who wakes up first?: Surprisingly, Sparrow! Only because Mason will fall asleep after they've been asleep for some time already so they wake up before he does.
Who prepares breakfast in bed for the other?: Sparrow is too worried about crumbs in the bed bothering Mason to even think about eating in bed.
What is their favourite sleeping position?: Mason flat on his back, Sparrow with a leg slung over his hip, arm across his chest and their head smashed against whatever part of him is nearest.
Do they set an alarm each night?: Yeah.
Who has nightmares?: They both do, though I think Sparrow is the only one who remembers them after they wake. Mason, luckily, forgets his dreams.
Can a television be found in their bedroom?: Nope, laptops can though.
Who has ridiculous dreams?: Again, both. Again, Mason forgets them while Sparrow remembers.
Who sprawls out and takes up most of the bed?: MASON. He just spreads out and Sparrow tucks themself against him, it works fine really.
Who makes the bed?: Mason most often because Sparrow tends to get sidetracked and forget.
What time is bed time?: When Sparrow next passes out is up to the Gods. Mason just crashes whenever he finally feels tired.
Any routines/rituals before bed?: They'll watch an episode or two of a show. Sparrow will meditate. Mason often tries to break their focus.
Who’s the grumpiest when they wake up?: Probably Mason? Sparrow is an annoying morning person.
WORK. Who is the busiest?: Oh they both are. Maybe Sparrow slightly more because of the whole, working for the PD and the Agency thing.
Who rakes in the highest income?: I feel like it ends up pretty even eventually?
Are any of them unemployed?: Nah.
Who takes the most sick days?: I guess Sparrow would, though it's very rare. Mason can't get sick, bastard.
What are their jobs?: Sparrow is a detective and agency liaison. Mason is a specialist agent for the Agency.
Who sucks up to their boss?: I don't think either of them do? Sparrow is polite with the Captain but he's nice enough. They definitely don't suck up to Adam or Rebecca or whomstever is in charge of them at the Agency.
Who is more likely to turn up late to work?: Neither of them. Sparrow has Anxiety so they're always at least 10 minutes early.
Who stresses the most?: SPARROW.
Do they enjoy or despise their careers/occupations?: Mason enjoys what he does for sure. Sparrow.......never wanted to be doing this. At all. They definitely aren't thrilled but they do like it, it's just......not what they wanted.
Are they financially stable?: Oh yeah.
HOME. Who does the washing?: Even trade off I think.
Who takes out the trash?: Sparrow.
Who does the ironing?: Neither of them lmao
Who does the cooking?: Sparrow! Mason likes to sit on the counter and talk while they cook.
Who is more likely to burn the house down just trying?: Mason lmao
Who is messier?: Even split again. Sparrow will set something down, get sidetracked, and then that book stays on the counter for five days until Mason is like "Bird you forgot your book." It's less.....intentionally messy and more just....brain going sideways.
Who leaves the toilet roll empty?: Neither of them.
Who leaves their dirty clothes on the floor?: BOTH OF THEM. There is a HAMPER and they both just throw their clothes on the ground like HEATHENS.
Who forgets to flush the toilet?: Fucking NEITHER OF THEM.
Who loses the car keys when it comes time to go somewhere?: Nope, absolutely never happens. Sparrow's anxiety kicks in and overrides the ADHD and the keys are always in sight.
Who answers the telephone?: If it's not a work call for Sparrow, then Mason.
Who mows the lawn?: Currently, neither of them bc there is no lawn lmao.
Who does the vacuuming?: Sparrow.
Who does the groceries?: Both together because they like doing it together. Mason enjoys putting random shit in the cart and seeing if Sparrow notices.
Who takes the longest to shower?: dasjgnd they're both very quick about showers, so neither?
Who spends the most time in the bathroom?: Sparrow I guess. They're both very much like, there's no real routine. They just fiddle with their hair and go.
MISCELLANEOUS. Is money a problem?: Nah.
How many cars do they own?: Just Sparrow's ol' reliable right now.
What’s their song?: We Love Like Vampires by Sparks the Rescue. Me & You by Honne.
Do they live in the city or in the country?: Country for sure. Both of them like the quiet.
Do they own their home or do they rent?: Right now, Sparrow rents their apartment.
Do they enjoy their surroundings?: I think so, yeah. Sparrow wishes they weren't still in Wayhaven sometimes but it's fine.
What do they do when they’re away from each other?: Whatever needs to be done? There isn't like something specific they have to do if they're apart, they just go on with their day.
Where did they first meet?: Formally, Sparrow's office when Rebecca introduced the entire team.
Who spends the most money when out shopping?: Gods, both of them?
Who’s more likely to flash their assets?: Mason, I guess.
Any mental issues?: Sparrow is a whole Mess honestly, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, etc. etc.
Who finds it amusing when the other trips over?: Both of them, bastards that they are.
Who’s terrified of bugs?: Eh, neither of them.
Who kills the spiders around the house?: NOBODY. Sparrow scoops them up and puts them outside.
Do they have any fears for their future?: The inevitable "Sparrow is going to die, Mason is an immortal vampire" obviously.
Their favourite place?: Somewhere in the woods together.
Who’s more likely to surprise the other with a fancy dinner?: Mason, since, you know, he doesn't really enjoy eating food.
Who pays the bills?: They both do.
Who’s the tallest?: Mason by like 6 inches.
Who’s more likely to just randomly hop into the shower with the other?: Mason, though Sparrow will too. He just does it more often.
Who wanders around in their underwear?: Oh they both do.
Who sings the loudest when singing along to the radio?: Sparrow, though it's rare they do.
What do they tease each other about?: Mason likes to good naturedly tease Sparrow about their bookish nature. Sparrow will squish his cheeks when he glares and grin at him.
Who is more likely to cringe at the other’s fashion sense at times?: MASON. Oh Gods, Sparrow is....listen, if they aren't dressed professionally for work or going out, they're a hot mess. I'm talking like bright green hoodie, neon yellow leggings, hot pink running shoes. Like a Lisa Frank folder exploded on a human being.
Who crushed first?: Mason. It took Sparrow a bit to be like "oh it's more than thinking his face is just nice, okay."
Any alcohol or substance related problems?: Nah, Sparrow doesn't drink.
Who is more likely to stumble home, drunk, at 3am?: Neither of them, considering the above and Mason's vampire biology.
Who swears the most?: Oh they both do. Sparrow looks sweet but they..........listen. They have the mouth of a sailor tbh. You get the two of them in a room together and let them talk and it's a mess of swearing.

@fatestouch
✩ for Avs and Cecil!
Disagreements:
Who is more likely to raise their voice? - Avelan
Who threatens to leave but never actually does? - I don’t think either would, but maybe Cecil?
Who actually keeps their word and leaves? - Both, I believe
Who trashes the house? - Neither. At least not on purpose…
Do either of them get physical? - Maybe shoulder grabbing and the occasional affectionate touch when they start to work things out?
How often do they argue/disagree? Who is the first to apologize? - Often, on minor things. On major things, it depends on who was wrong. And most of the time that’s Avelan, I think.
Sex:
Who is on top? Who is on the bottom? - They switch around, though I would say Avs usually is unless Cecil’s riding him.
Who has the strangest desires? Any kinks? - ……*gestures at them.* A bit of a bondage kink, power play, role-playing—
Who’s dominant in bed? - Usually Avelan, recently Cecil…<.<….
Is head ever in the equation? If so, who is better at performing it? - Of course. And Avs would say that he is, but he also really loves watching Cecil give it to him.
Ever had sex in public? -I think the most public they’ve ever done it was in the living room, while other people were still in the house…
Who moans the most? Who leaves the most marks? Who screams the loudest? - Cecil moans and screams the loudest, and Avelan leaves the most marks. Especially nail marking on the hips….
Who is the more experienced of the two? - Avelan? Just because he’s older so…ye…
Do they ‘fuck’ or ‘make love’? - Both, depending on the mood.
Rough or soft? - Usually, it’s pretty rough and fast. But they do have the rare night of soft and slow, and taking their time.
How long do they usually last? - *laughs*
Is protection used? - I don’t think so? When they first started sleeping with each other, probably. But after they became exclusive, that habit just faded out and neither of them really have to worry about getting the other pregnant, so…
Does it ever get boring? - *laughs again*
Where is the strangest place they’d have sex? - Probably somewhere in Kapisola, in the stables when all the animals were like gone for a bit.
Family:

Who is the prankster around the house? - Cecil. Definitely Cecil. And maybe Lydia now.
Who loses the car keys when it comes time to go somewhere? - Avelan, but not really accidentally. And why would they take the car? They can teleport…
Who mows the lawn? - Avelan.
Who answers the telephone? Who does the vacuuming? - Avelan probably let’s Cecil handle the phone whenever possible. Probably his phone, too.
Who does the groceries? - Most groceries they can get from Kapisola, so I would say Avelan?
Who takes the longest to shower? Who spends the most time in the bathroom? - Avelan. No question.
Miscellaneous:
Is money a problem? -Nope!

Do they own their home or do they rent? - Own!
Do they live near the coast or deep in the countryside? Do they live in the city or in the country? Do they enjoy their surroundings? - We’ve discussed them moving before, but idk if we decided where? I see them living in that “skeleton house” on Merlow Isle, which now currently the peak of the new continent, once it’s finished being build.
What’s their song? - Love Will Find A Way <3
What do they do when they’re away from each other? - Their godly duties. And they’re pretty different have other things going on aside from each other, and that’s plenty
Where did they first meet? How did they first meet? - The Paradise café? And I would say through tindr, but that seemed like a crack meme so we can say Nero introduced them.
Who spends the most money when out shopping? - Ceeciilll—Avelllan? I’m not sure
Who’s more likely to flash their assets? - Both. *facepalms*
Who finds it amusing when the other trips over? - Cecil, since Avelan is often more on the graceful and nimble side….
Any mental issues? - ….. ;u;’’’
Who’s terrified of bugs? Who kills the spiders around the house? - Neither? I think they’re both pretty okay with dealing with pests. And I don’t just mean bugs.
Their favourite place? - Hmm….speaking for both of them, I would say their new home. But speaking for Avs alone, Avs likes his tree.
Who pays the bills? - They got no bills to pay!
Do they have any fears for their future? - At the moment, I see most of their future fears concerning Lydia. In general, I can’t think of anything specific for them aside from the apocalypse, maybe.
Who’s more likely to surprise the other with a fancy dinner? - Avelan!
Who uses up all of the hot water? - Avelan….*shakes head* It’s all that hair.
-Who’s the tallest? - Avelan: *smirks*
Who’s more likely to just randomly hop into the shower with the other? - Cecil! But I see Avelan doing this, too. On the rare occasion he feels like being bad.
Who wanders around in their underwear? - Same answer as the above.
Who sings the loudest when singing along to the radio? - Definitely Cecil.
What do they tease each other about? - Height. Age. Any stupid or clumsy moments Avelan each other may have.
Who is more likely to cringe at the other’s fashion sense at times? - Cecil.
Do they have mutual friends? - Aside from family, I would say Aile…….I…I don’t think I can think of anyone else…aside from maybe two or a few Angels?
Who crushed first? - Cecil
Any alcohol or substance related problems? - Avs drinks, but rarely allows himself to get wasted when he does. As for Cecil…there was an instance, recently ;u;’‘‘
Who is more likely to stumble home, drunk, at 3am? - ….Cecil….orz
Who swears the most? - Avelan…? Though I think Cecil might be close.

I seriously think I might be depressed and/ or have anxiety. I have never been to a therapist and I can't talk about this to my friends (they barely are my friends anymore) so I'm kinda worried it's gonna get worse. I'm afraid to go to a therapist because I don't know what to tell them and what if they brush it off or they diagnose me wrongly.
It’s common to get both anxiety and depression. I have major depression and generalised anxiety disorder along with borderline personality disorder so i can relate.
But seriously, start therapy and or meds as soon as you can. Because things can get worse. I struggled with my mental illness from about the age of ten till i was like 18 and a half. and thats a long time to go without support of any kind. Honestly, it was too long to wait. I think dealing with my issues alone for like the entirety of my teenage years actually fucked me pretty hard.
Is misdiagnosis possible? Yes. Everything is possible. But you can’t let that rule you. If you have the choice, you can search the doctors you’ll see. If you dont feel a diagnosis is right, you can always seek a 2nd or 3rd opinion. Sometimes you do end up self diagnosing, esp if you have something a bit more than just normal depression or anxiety - in fact I was the one that realised my bpd, but I struggled to get doctors to listen to me, so i said fuck it, and emailed a local psychologist and got an appointment and within 6 months she confirmed it for me. I still see her now two years after because she’s such a stable and consistant person in my life - like I’ve missed one appointment in 2 years. And im a chronic cancel-er of appointments.
There’s a few things about seeking help or therapy, and these two things are: you can leade a horse to water but you can’t make them drink. Therapy is hard work. I can’t gloss over how important it is but it’s so hard, esp when you have trauma, but recovery will always be worth it. It’s not linear and there will be moments, I mean I’ve been in therapy t various degrees since 2014, and I was suicidal, again, last night. The second thing is honesty. Therapy is hard enough, but when you refuse to let yourself open up because you’re anxious or something, it defeats the point of going to therapy. If you feel like you need therapy or help, it should be a priority to open up to whoever you see, because you’ll be living your truth finally and dropping the “nothings wrong” mask because thats what allows depression and other mental illnesses to thrive.
If people ever give you shit for being mentally ill: Well you know where the trash bin is, because you absolutely do not need toxic people like that in your life. The thing is, for not knowing what to say…say everything. Often they’ll ask things like when are you born, your address, your family history. And then from there, they’ll start to make notes. In my experience, you talk. about everything and anything. I’m at the point in my therapy I talk about big shit, and then the next moment I’m going on about how much I love Cody Fern. Like esp once you have a good relationship with a therapist or psychologist, just talking about everything helps. Like this person isn’t going to be your best friend, but they’re there for you to just rant to. I actually believe everyone should be in therapy. Because aving a 3rd person to ask about things, like how your best friend hurt you, or if you’re having self-esteem issues, all of that is so important to talk about. I feel like im just rambling, but seriously, try and seek someone out. Don’t let depression and anxiety rule your life. For more context, from mid 2012 to the start of 2014, I actually spent all that time housebound. I never left the house. I only left to see the doctor and my boyfriend had to go with me. I couldn’t eat in public. I felt like everyone was watching me. I’d have near panic attacks just being on one of the busiest streets in my city. The reality? No one was looking at me. No one cared. But in my mind, I believed they did. I dont remember people i see on the street? why did i think people would remember me or my fat ass??? But thats the thing about anxiety, is that you truely believe these things, and its not easy to overcome that on your own. These days I barely leave the house but thats because throughout all my health issues, from when I was 16, I actually developed chronic fatigue syndrome, so these days, my anxiety is barely an issue, the cfs can fuck off though.
So you are not alone at all. There will always be someone who understands. But do try to seek help because living with these demons alone isn’t something anyone should feel like they’re stuck doing. If you ever need positive mental health things to look at, I have this tag: https://codylangdon.tumblr.com/tagged/positive

Find good examples of Main Street and Third Place in your neighborhood or hometown. Explain their conditions (in terms of building use, social life, and pedestrian quality).
Downtown yellow springs. Ohio. Find It Here. (n.d.). Retrieved March 29, 2023, from https://ohio.org/things-to-do/destinations/downtown-yellow-springs
Crocker Park, Westlake Ohio-Kayra Koprulu

Politics and Prose – Chevy Chase
315
5015 Connecticut Ave NW Washington, DC 20008 (202) 364-1919
Curbside pick-up will resume tomorrow, and orders can be placed either by phone or online. Pick-ups can be done at any of P&P’s three locations. For those desiring curbside pick-up, select that option at checkout on the web site. Once the order is filled, an e-mail notification will indicate that items are ready for pick-up. Phone hours have now been extended to 11-6 (Tuesday-Sunday), and pick-up hours are from 1-5 p.m. on Tuesday-Sunday. Pick-ups at the main (Connecticut Avenue) location will be in the parking lot behind the store – and at their other two locations (The Wharf & Union Market), pick-ups will be in front of the store. More pick-up instructions: Wait for notification that your order is ready for pick-up. Call the phone number of (whichever) store upon your arrival and then your order will be placed on a table. Wear a mask and maintain six feet of distance from others.
I love Politics and Prose. I love books and reading and this bookstore is truly dedicated to that. I also prefer to support independent stores in my community. Politics and Prose has a fantastic selection. The children’s selection is on point, plus they have super cute merchandise. Clearly, the politics/world affairs section is big. They also have a nice cookbook selection. Staff is friendly. I was most recently there for an author talk and signing. I was able to buy the book, “Cool Beans” and have author Joe Yonan sign it. He was in conversation with Pati Jinich, which was great. and Little Sesame (my favorite) had samples for that event. So they do cool things like that. Plus, heading up here gives me a reason to check out restaurants I wouldn’t normally get to, so there’s that bonus as well. Definitely a great D.C. fixture.
A very cool and interesting bookstore. It is very well known. Politics and Prose is the best place to get reading material. Fun activities like social clubs come to meet here. They have books of almost any interest. Bookstores are not as common as they used to be. If you can read something on a pad or phone, why do you need a book? There’s many reasons. If you’re looking for an older book. There’s lots of older books here. It also has lots of newer books. Some people just like actual books, especially if these are classics. There’s also certain benefits to going to bookstores that you can’t get on a screen. At this store they often have visits by famous authors. There always seems to be a book signing. It becomes rarer to find a bookstore. This one always has something interesting to read or see. You can check the calendar to see when a famous author might come to visit.
In the age of online shopping, bookstores are becoming a dying breed (RIP Borders). No need to fret! I’m here to report that Politics and Prose is alive and kicking! This location has the qualities of a quintessential neighborhood bookstore…D.C. homegrown, warm staff, loyal customers, family-friendly, and a cozy coffeehouse to boot. Space is well-organized, roomy, and clean. There’s a plethora of topics to explore and choose from: politics, fiction, nonfiction, history, poetry…the list is endless. Selection in children’s books are second to none. Since whodunits are my jam…I’m usually browsing the mystery section. Found several hard to find Walter Mosley novels (Gone Fishin’, Devil in a Blue Dress, and White Butterfly). Special mention: Looking for a cool and unique gift? You’ll probably find it here. There’s something for all ages…from the quirky magnets and colorful graphic tees to the most adorable baby bibs. Side note: Still living in the Dark Ages and having a hard time finding CD’s? Politics and Prose has you covered! A nice collection of musical genres…jazz, international, classical, folk, and so much more. Pro tips: Stop by The Den in the lower level for a tasty cup of espresso or tea. Also, the Smoked Salmon Toast is out of this world! Interesting tidbit: The delicious smoked salmon comes from the local Ivy City Smokehouse…need I say more? Definitely a fan of this one of a kind bookstore, and that is why I’m giving it five stars!
Classic DC spot. Great for book browsing, especially for political books. Decent cafe downstairs.
Love coming here! Their prices are good, tons of books to choose from, and the downstairs cafe is delightful!
I am a book lover, and this is book heaven! There are a ton of books to choose for every genre. There’s a’ways some great signings and discussions going on here. If you’re looking for book accessories this is also your place to look. Parking is on the street but there’s plenty of it. There’s a cafe called “The Den” below with wine and coffee.
Politics and Prose is an institution – the premier independent bookstore in the DC area. The events they hold almost everyday is proof of their status. Almost every high profile politician on a book tour will come through P&P for an event, in addition to celebrities and popular authors. Below I will mostly focus on the Conn. Ave. store and café, but the P&P brand is strong. The store: It has a fantastic selection, particularly for nonfiction books. When you walk into the store, you are immediately overwhelmed by the floor to ceiling bookshelves. The space is super inviting and it’s set up for perusing. Go to the left first and you’ll find new releases, than work your way around clockwise. I really like the new sale section in the addition. The room is much more open, given that the clearance section used to be in the basement. The new P&P stores by the Wharf and Union Market don’t have sale sections and are major let downs to me, although I can touch more on that in those respective store reviews. Advice to student visitors: sign up for the P&P membership – it’s free! After buying a certain amount of products, you get money off. Overall, I’m always up for a leisurely trip to P&P. The café (The Den): P&P’s The Den, which is located in the basement of the store, is underrated. It has a partnership with Little Red Fox which is a couple storefronts away. The few times I have been here while visiting P&P, I’ve gotten coffee and/or lunch. Both seemed like they were of very high quality. I got an iced latte and a peanut sauce Soba noodle bowl the last time I visited – both were fantastic. It’s difficult to find seating in the Den on the weekends, but usually if you wait around for ten minutes something will show up. Conclusion: P&P is a must visit for someone who wants to get a figurative and literal taste of the city.
I love when a book store (with events) & a cafe are combined! I came here last weekend with my friend who lives a few blocks away and absolutely loved this place and it’s charm. We went to the cafe downstairs and each had the Salvadoran Corn Cake and shared the Ricotta & Fig toast. I had their homemade raspberry iced tea and she had their cold brew. It was just the right amount of food and everything was delicious and fresh. I loved the artwork from locals hung around the shop and the overall vibe of the place. If I lived in the area, this would definitely be somewhere I would frequent!
Great store! It has a good stock of books and is socially conscious as well. A good combo if you ask me! My one issue: I went to the store to buy a copy of “Visions of Jerome” by Jack Kerouac. Jack wrote this book about me when I was a drunken hobo in my youth. I did not find my book, but I found “Visions of Gerard.” Gerard was my understudy in those days as we road the rails. I have no idea why his book is there instead of mine!
Politics & Prose is great! It’s an independent bookstore that offers excellent customer service with a wide selection of books. The bookstore employees are very knowledgeable and helpful. Just a few of the awesome ones are Terry, Nora, Michael, Sly, Jamal, Alecia, Carolyn, Adam, Ellie, and many more. They have member sales with great discounts on books. Downstairs with the children’s section is the cafe, The Den. This place is always busy, but especially on weekends. Most of the baristas are college students (usually American University) who are 18-20. I want to push back against some of the bad reviews directed at customer service. For some of these kids, this is their first job ever. Also, they’re working there because P&P offers a living wage AND benefits that surpass most university health care plans. Yes, they sometimes make mistakes, but if you show them the same courtesy with which you’d like to be treated, they are very kind and accommodating. Honestly, I think the fact that the Den is always a busy and lively place is a testament to the service and awesome atmosphere. A couple things: This is NOT a quiet space. Like almost all coffee shops, the place is full of people on laptops working, on mobile phones, or conversing with friends. It’s still quieter than Tryst, but it’s also much smaller. That’s another thing: even though there are signs saying to give up your seat if you’re not eating or drinking, people will park in their seats for hours. The coffee house turns off the WiFi from 11 am to 2pm on weekdays and has no WiFi on weekends to discourage people from doing this during their busiest times, but it still happens. So just be aware, around lunchtime and on days where there are member sales or well-known authors speaking, there will little to no seating. Lastly, because P&P is an independent business who treats their employees like human beings, there is no forced enthusiasm/forced smiles policy like at Starbucks where you are expected to “genuinely love coffee,” as if forcing your employees to grin like Wal-Mart greeters makes them more efficient baristas. P&P understands that conditions like depression and bipolar disorder can make the “37 pieces of flair” TGI Friday’s approach to customer service difficult. That said, I have never had anyone be unpleasant to me. But I appreciate that P&P lets people have a flat affect without worrying that it might cost them their job. Soon the Den will also have more and better coffee options, plus they have an awesome new coffee manager (Kenia) in charge of quality control for espresso drinks. So be sure to stop in and try some of their blends in the near future!
Any description of this book store by me is eclipsed by the volumes of works found here. When in town, I stop by here just to browse and purchase the newest editions of books that attract my fancy. It attracts an A list of literary personalities and authors. Here you can run into Presidents (the ones who read), poets, authors great and small, and think tank wonks. It is as if the Academy, Académie Française, and Real Academia Español were reduced to English and placed here. This is Washington’s literary Pantheon. Go, revel in it, support it and immerse yourself; you will thank yourself.
Wonderful indie bookstore in an indie bookstore kinda town. We are chasing NYC as the top US indie bookstore destination. Solid State and Kramerbooks are worth supporting, too. There are others. We are lucky also to have a few Barnes and Nobles left in the area. P&P sponsors author talks and has a nice cafe downstairs. They have a membership program w sales and discounts. I ordered a turkey sandwich from the cafe and the fellow preparing it came out to ask me if, since I swore off the pesto mayo, I would like extra avocado to help hold the thing together better. He must have unicorn blood in his veins. This place is America at its best. Pride and meaningfulness.
This is my favorite bookstore in DC! I love the amazing selection of new and classic books, the quirky items, and the events. Many of the books I have purchased here are also signed by the author. The cafe downstairs is lovely – its great to journal, do some work, and read a book.
I am so excited that this bookstore exist! Let it be known that you can still buy books inside of a store… Wait what? Yes that’s right, ladies and gentlemen you can still purchase books inside of a bookstore. While the idea of a bookstore is slowly dying, I for one enjoy being able to pick up a book and skim through it before deciding to purchase it or not. I also really appreciate this bookstore because often authors come in to do Q&A’s along with book signings. The one downside is definitely the location. Parking can be extremely difficult to find. However; once inside the store you will find books on almost every topic you could desire. Cookbooks, religion books, political… Obviously, autobiographies, children’s books, and a bunch of other knickknacks that you never knew you needed but definitely want. This is also a great place to stop if you are in need of a gift. I recommend checking this book store out if you are in the area.
This review is just for their cafe. My friend and I came here to get some work done, but apparently they turn off their WiFi from 12-2 to empty their seats faster. That was unfortunate, since we were there to work on our laptops. As for food, cappuccino was good, but chocolate croissant was amazing!! I’m a sucker for a good flaky pain au chocolat
About a month ago, we went here about 45 minutes before closing for some coffee, a glass of wine, and to have a relaxing conversation. We tried to order an Americano and latte. We were told that the espresso bar “closed at 8:00” so we had to order coffee. The coffee was fine, but we were still perplexed as to how an espresso machine “closes.” The guy behind the counter wasn’t interested in providing much of an explanation or apologizing. We sat down, and about 15 minutes later, the same gentleman yelled “Closing in 30 minutes!” as loud as he possibly could. We were the only people sitting in the store – was not really necessary to yell as though the shop was crowded and needed to be cleared out. Fifteen minutes later, a female employee walked near our table, and about 5-10 feet away from us yelled, “CLOSING IN 15 MINUTES!” It was like something out of a Saturday Night Live sketch. I finished my coffee as fast as I possibly could, spit the grounds back into the cup, then we left. Never returning to this place. Unless that was some sort of candid camera episode or Punk’d, that was truly the worst customer service I have ever experienced.
I enjoy everything about the downstairs cafe except the peanut noodle bowl. YUCK!
This amazing bookstore and coffeehouse is the perfect place to be productive and/or avoid all your problems. With multiple genres of books to choose from and a delicious menu with toast, wine, teas & coffee, etc. Politics & Prose is one of the best bookstores in the D.C. area. I really enjoyed the time that I spent here. The book selection is vast and wonderful. They also have a lot of gadgets, stationary, and gifts that you can purchase for yourself or others. Their coffeehouse- named “The Den” is downstairs; there is plenty of seating, but the seats fill up fast. There is Wi-Fi, but not on the weekends. I think this is a great idea. I ordered two hot chai lattes, traditional grilled cheese sandwich, and a smoked salmon toast. The presentation was just as great as the food I ordered. I definitely recommend this place to others. I will definitely be coming back!
Cute place! Great for studying, they have a good selection of drinks and pastries to eat. Wish there a few more outlets around the cafe.

In Dallas, Tracking Merit Coffee’s Texas-Sized Expansion
Merit Coffee’s Deep Ellum cafe.
They say there is no rest for the weary. There is also, unsurprisingly, no rest for those unwilling to slow down. Few know this better than Robby Grubbs, the owner of San Antonio’s Merit Coffee, who has overseen significant statewide expansion in the last 18 months, first into downtown Austin, and now into Dallas. Turns out Merit has a whole lot in store for the Big D, including a stunning new coffee 2,500 sq. ft. coffee bar in the Deep Ellum district of downtown, and overseeing a brand new cafe in the tony Highland Park neighborhood, open this very day of publishing, April 2nd.
Let’s start with Deep Ellum first. The neighborhood is a Dallas cultural epicenter, but as a district it’s been historically rough on coffee shops (or anything that isn’t a concert venue, bar, or tattoo parlor for that matter). A dearth of nearby housing has for the longest time relegated one of the only walkable areas of the city to a nighttime only destination. A lack of daytime foot traffic is death to coffee shops. But Deep Ellum is seeing that axiom bend—if not break entirely—thanks to revitalization efforts bringing in more businesses and eateries over the past few years that require an audience during sunlight hours.
The newest edition to these efforts is Merit, who is betting big on this changing tide. Working with Austin-based architect Michael Hsu—whose previous work includes Austin favorites Uchi, La Condesa, Sway, and the iconic burger stand P. Terry’s—Merit has transformed the space that was previously home to funky antique store Lula B’s into a modern cafe. What was once a warehouse-like space has been given a total overhaul, including near-floor-to-ceiling windows comprising a majority of the southern- and eastern-most walls that allow in lots of natural light throughout the day, imparting a sense of openness to the cafe.
Inside, the space’s antique shop past life is equally unrecognizable from the clean, buttoned-up cafe in its place. Through the front doors, guests are greeted by white counter-topped light wood bar offsetting the not-quite-navy-not-quite navy backsplash tiles, a nod to Merit’s preferred color palate. A matter-of-fact white lettered, light-wooded menu board along with the pastry case full of tasty treats from local Bisous Bisous Pâtisserie give subtle cues to how, where, and what to order. Following the bar space back, a pour-over station consisting of two Modbar modules jut from the clean counterspace, where baristas make single-serve coffees via Kalita Wave brewers with coffee ground through the white Mahlkönig EK-43 sitting at the right angle bend of the bar, the demarcation between the brewed coffee and espresso sections of the bar. For espresso-based drinks, Merit has stuck with the white Mahlkönig/Modbar combo but have switched it up to include to PEAK grinders, three espresso modules, and two steam valves from Modbar’s new AV line.
The remainder of the space is divided between tables, zig-zag bench seating, and a glass-encased training center where Merit will host wholesale clients and other training classes.
There are no half-measures in this build-out. No bets have been hedged. Even as a relatively unknown brand to the Dallas consumer—save for the occasional guest spot at Communion in Richardson—and opening in a difficult part of town for coffee shops, Merit is going all-in. For Grubbs, a former Dallas resident whose ties include opening the Texas’ first Starbucks here some two decades ago (not to mention meeting his spouse just a few blocks away), the timing was right for the move. “Dallas felt like the natural direction to go,” Grubbs tells Sprudge. “The opportunity presented itself thru the Developer, Asana. We met them through a deal in Austin and we fell in love with their portfolio and their history of doing things right. We realized that we are a little early in what we believe is a killer transition in Deep Ellum, which made it even more attractive. We are super stoked about attracting more daytime traffic here.”
The Deep Ellum cafe is just the first step in Merit’s plan to grow their presence in Dallas. The second Dallas outpost is located in the Highland Park neighborhood—next to what Grubbs tells me is the “busiest Drybar in the country”—opens today. Building two shops simultaneously in a brand new city is an aggressive growth strategy, but as Grubbs explains, “We knew we wanted at least two locations. It just so happened Deep Ellum and Highland Park came on the radar at the same time and both were too good to pass up.”
Merit Coffee’s now-open Highland Park location.
Merit will also ramp up wholesale efforts in Dallas once they’ve gained a bit more of a footing in the city. In order to meet the demand, the San Antonio-based roastery commissioned a 45-kilo Probat roaster, up from the two 25-kilo and one 12-kilo Probats they currently run.
Once the two new cafes get up and running and the wholesale program is humming along, surely Grubbs is going to slow down, right? Nope. Even with all this Dallas activity, Merit has been simultaneously developing a third Austin location. That will bring the total count of locations for the Merit/Local family of coffee bars up to 11 here in 2019, making them inarguably the most prolific and expansive of the new generation of Texas independent coffee companies. That it’s all come at such a blistering pace over the last two years is nothing short of astonishing.
Grubbs closed my interview with him by teasing further Texas expansion, as well as continued growth and development within the three cities they currently call home. One thing is for certain: Merit is putting a premium on growth, even if it comes at the detriment of sleep. If the opportunity too good to pass up comes along during the planned and much-need breather, well, then it’s like Grubbs says: “Plans schmans.”
