Introduction to Iego - The Diathui
With an endonym meaning “People of the Diathim,” Iego’s indigenous near-human ethnicity is shrouded in secrecy and mysticism. Hailing from the original human inhabitants of Iego and the Diathim who ventured beyond its moons, the Diathui are an ancient race with a proud history.
In ancient times, during the era of rudimentary space travel, a human sleeper ship crash-landed on the planet; in the ensuing chaos, the population separated into multiple warring bands that ultimately evolved into the legendary Twelve Tribes. It became the precedent for the tribes to be led by half-human, half-Diathim hybrids. As time went on, the majority of each tribe’s population eventually all had traces of Diathim ancestry, often as a result of each chieftain’s expansive harem–at least, according to legend. While the tribes themselves have long since disappeared, individual Diathui will often claim ancestral ties to a certain tribe, although the only real value to this is bragging rights. Individual cultural distinctions of each tribe have fallen into obscurity, and it can only be assumed all their attributes evolved into a single overarching–yet still small–culture.
There are few Diathui left on Iego, numbering only in the thousands, yet their mysterious reputation is firmly cemented in the minds of the wider galaxy. Often referred to as “fairies” or “elves,” these epithets are regarded as patronizing at best, fetishistic at worst, and overall derogatory. Stereotypes about them are quite widespread, mostly surrounding their mystical heritage and religion. For example, one common misconception is that Diathui are immortal, citing their Drolic healing practices, angelic ancestry, and generally longer-than-average lifespans. They’re regarded in a way similar to both the Ghostlings and the Dathomirians; they’re infantilized and made into objects, like the Ghostlings, and are viewed as esoteric tricksters, like the Dathomirians.. For the most part, however, the Diathui are seen as purely fictional, much like their parent species–little more than magical beings from a fairytale.
The rumored supernatural abilities of the Diathui are the primary focus of the stories surrounding them. All Diathui have baseline features stemming from their Diathim ancestry–faintly glowing skin, mild radioactivity, a wider spectrum of vision–but only females inherit the sacred powers, save for the legendary Drolic prophet who united the Twelve Tribes. Details surrounding these abilities are closely guarded by the triyi, who are selected from among those who display the most prominent powers. These sacred powers are indeed manifestations of Force abilities, although a handful of which are most likely exclusive to those of Diathim ancestry.
