Well for one, they can’t find any of these countries on a map or tell them apart from each other. For two, they don’t actually keep up with news unless it’s a trending topic on social media.
I kept thinking about how weird it was that no one here but Jewish bloggers were talking about a recent case where a Palestinian lesbian was under protection of Israel for her safety… but how it wasn’t well-handled and she became more and more depressed being under what was basically a protective house arrest, until she finally declined protection and went home, where she was murdered in an honor killing by her brothers.
Jewish bloggers, normie Jews on Facebook even, were talking about it at length. Especially Israelis. How Israel has failed this woman, what should have been done instead. And then realizing that you were never going to see most people who see themselves as pro-Palestine activists (by way of social media posts) talk about issues like this.
For one, it’s not black and white enough. For two, they’re just not paying attention like that. They remember that they care about the issue when it’s trending again, and forget immediately after.
They don’t know shit about day-to-day discussion of issues in Palestine and how to work for actual concrete improved living conditions. Arguments about hilltop youth, condemnation of hotheads trying to make sacrifices on the Temple Mount, where Jews aren’t allowed to pray.
If you put them on the spot, not one of them could explain why people were divided re: the famous decades-long eviction case, or to list a single legal entity involved—let alone which Israeli groups were fighting to keep the family’s protected status in that house. They could tell you the headline, but that’s it.
Soon, they’ll abandon the topic again, except for a few posts they share that cross their feed once in a while. And because they’re only invested once in a while, they’ll assume everyone else is too. That way when something truly horrific happens like this, and people express pain for the deliberately targeted innocents, they can screech well why didn’t you care when— while the people they’re screeching at have stayed involved.
I’ve seen it happen again and again and again.
i wonder why almost none of the hot takes i’m seeing about current events are mentioning the saudi deal as a key factor of the timing
