#brotp: it's always a competition

The other thing about the Kirk-Uhura brotp that I have many feelings about:

Of all the ~430 positions filled by people on the Enterprise, I'd argue that there are none for which outwards composure is more important than for the communications officer and the commanding officer. Above all others on the ship, those two have to stay cool under pressure and retain the ability to keep talking (often to large numbers of people), while projecting unfaltering assurance and resolve.

As individuals, Kirk and Uhura have obviously put a lot of effort into developing that bedrock of composure, while also being pleasant or assertive as needed. Throughout TOS, they both come across as confident, charismatic, very skilled, eloquent professionals. Both of them can be lightly charming and easy to underestimate, or sharp-tongued and forceful, and both of them are clever and good liars.

But tbh, I think that TOS also gradually reveals both Kirk and Uhura to be incredibly high-strung people who are just really good at their jobs.

It's not that either is naturally easy-going and chill! As people, Kirk and Uhura have zero chill. They're just very controlled and very deliberate about projecting what's needed.

Neither are perfect at this by any means. Kirk lashes out now and then, and visibly fights off tension headaches or anxiously fiddles with his own hands. Uhura gets intensely nervous or upset every once in awhile. There are points in the show where one of them will just start losing their shit. But that's unusual, and mainly used to flag the circumstances as exceptional. And even in those cases, we repeatedly see them swapping the role of being a calm and reliable rock for the other one as he/she is about to snap. When Kirk's composure starts to crumble, we'll often see Uhura as this steadying, quietly supportive, or challenging presence as needed; when Uhura starts falling apart, we repeatedly see Kirk flip into a calm, affirming figure taking pains to remind her of her importance and capabilities.

I think this is a bit different from the way that, say, Spock works to keep an iron grip on his vulnerabilities and adheres to cool reason while doing Science, or McCoy might get snappish or plainly desperate but always has a clear enough head for Medicine. Kirk's and Uhura's roles, at least as they choose to approach them, require these constant performances of a sort of lightly emotive, personable steadiness that keeps the whole ship smoothly running even as they're doing the intellectual/practical work of their jobs.

Also, in addition to the explicit dialogue around their professional synergy and rapport, quite a bit is carried by physical acting from Nichols and Shatner as well. For instance, we'll see Uhura's expression shift without a word to dawning realization around some Scheme or Shenanigans that Kirk is carrying out while people around her are still visibly ?????????? Or you'll see these moments of solidarity or trust in how Kirk physically carries himself towards Uhura. It's also made really clear that there is zero sexual attraction or romantic interest between them—they're both charming, attractive, intelligent, and even close in age but it's just not there at all, even repressed or stifled.

In any case, Uhura is the only person other than Spock whom Kirk feels the need to name both times that he records potentially-posthumous special commendations in TOS.

Oooo you bring to the table a tantalizingly interesting prospect. I do have waaaaaay too many thoughts, and many of them are admittedly steeped in my own AU because I accidentally sold my soul to it (as authors do) so by all means, do not feel encumbered by my thoughts/ideas. Treat them as a buffet to pick and choose and take inspo from, because unfortunately you just gave me license to ramble :D

(and this is going to be rambley; too tired to make this cohesive beyond bullet points)

—Laxus and Erik brotp is so real to me, fam. It's the "hey we got a lacrima bestowed upon us, whoo" bonding, for one, but beyond that, the sort of....quiet mutual understanding of what it is like to have a "father" figure who is just treating them like a weapon, making them *stronger*, with a faux sort of affection. Beyond the trauma, though, they are both deadpan assholes and I love that for them. If Erik (and this is the htryds coloring) spends a good deal of time having the braincell, then with Laxus he can channel the little-shit-little-brother energy and bully him a bit, and Laxus can be grouchy back and know that Erik can parse through the emotions and figure out what's genuine or not without him figuring out how to put in the effort.

—Also, depending on the setting, they both have the tendency to pull the ~too good for you~ bad boy vibes as a defense mechanism, which makes it utterly unusable on each other, which is fun. Mostly, though, Laxus and Erik have the ability to enjoy a mutual quietness, so to speak; not trying to prove anything, but just leaning back and being normal young adults (with a little salt on the side) and doing whatever. That said, Erik is a bit too much of a dark mirror of how things could have been worse for Laxus, if Ivan was more involved, and this leads to Laxus winning the "big brother instinct" award of the two, which is an experience Erik is not used to but....does not necessarily hate.

—This is a fun headcanon that I haven't had the chance to incorporate into my series yet, but they have fun little music debates. Laxus got Erik into the magic of using music to calm the overstimulation, but they have wildly different tastes. Laxus loves rock and roll and metal, and Erik turned to liking types of bluegrass and straight up classical music. They meet in the middle at alt-rock. They are both always trying to win each other over on certain songs or genres. It works surprisingly often but it's part of the fun to swear undying rivalry to the other's favorite.

—For more Cobra-specific vibes (aka the canon edgemaster), I can see them being a bit more competitive with each other. Which quickly doesn't work when they have completely different specialties, but an effort is made.

—Also something I haven't had the chance to capitalize on outside of the scenarios in my head, but Bickslow and Erik definitely have a fun "we perceive you but we don't care" vibe that I love. Your secrets are obvious but not their business. Sometimes they people watch together for the fun of it, because all of the thoughts they *do* have regarding the things they know have got to go somewhere.

—Evergreen, being the queen of gossip, really really wants in on this. They tease her for it though, and purposely dangle that tea on a string. (Though sometimes Ever *does* get in on it, mostly when it comes to roasting anyone who was particularly rude or annoying, or the silly speculation at the expense of friends, like figuring out what job Nab will eventually go on or what animal Bisca will adopt next.)

—On this same note, Bickslow and Evergreen both have insufferable little sibling energy amongst the Thunder Legion squad, nevermind that Bickslow is the second oldest. Mostly it's just really fun to tease the more serious ones.

—Though Ever and Bickslow are also the most keenly aware of what it is like to be feared. Truly feared. Having eye magic that isn't quite controllable (as a kid, especially) will grant that experience. It is their unspoken agreement never ever to speak of this, of course.

—On an individual note, it is worth it now to bring up that I am an avid fan (read: it's canon to me and sometimes I forget it's not real canon) of the theory that Bickslow was one of the kids experimented on by the Bureau of Magical Development. He's got that unhinged flavor that comes from straight-up trauma, and it does add more context to his otherwise creepy magic. I also hc that the babies are all deceased test subjects, and that is why they have stuck with him all this time. (I am very passionate about the babies as characters, unfortunately, and my little mini series I'm doing for them on tumblr is proof. I am soooo normal.)

—Another theory I love, and that I have somewhat brandished into my own spin, is that Freed is half demon. He sees this as an awful thing, raised by his human parent (mother, in my case), without any real context for demon culture other than the fear of it, so that's why he's super edgy and has locked all of his demon traits away into a single form he swear never to uses unless things are ~Dire~ or whatnot. It's really not that bad though lol.

—The fact that Erik will Know Freed's secrets bother him immensely. Freed is, unfortunately, *just* a smidge too dense to realize that Bickslow has also known all along, just because Bickslow is strangely very good at keeping things to himself, whereas Erik's magic is more obvious. In my au, Laxus knows too, and is literally just waiting for Freed to admit it, because it's not that big of a deal, really.

—Laxus is also the only one who (at first) knows about Bickslow's past, among the team. Mostly because of some variant of Laxus having seen/met him when it was all raw. Depending on the au flavor, this either is what gives the chaotic dude and the stoic dude a sort of mutual respect (closer to canon) or makes them the og best friends (htryds style). In the latter case, they are each other's impulse control and/or voice of reason, which is probably unfortunate because they're not great at it. This is why Bickslow has doodled drawings on half of Laxus's furniture and why Laxus gets away with avoiding his problems a little longer than he should.

—Freed is simultaneously the most responsible and the most edgy and ergo reckless of the crew. Everyone agrees he's got to value his safety just a little bit more. He's also the only one who consistently remembers the schedule/to-do-list.

—Erik shares the "living itinerary, doesn't have executive disfunction problems" braincell with Freed, and in the right conditions, they work very well together. Bonding over the experience of herding cats, that is their teammates.

—Not a headcanon but I want to whack all of them with sticks. The Sad Boi Stick, the Whump Stick... All flavors. Getting the ones who never fess up to their trauma a good thwack makes the trauma spill out, and I enjoy the possibilities that entails. Put them in Situations. >:D

—I do also appreciate them being silly-goofy, too, of course. No need to be angry all of the time, in some of their cases. (They all need affection so bad. The hurt/comfort allure of it all. Just sit down and admit they need it, etc etc.) Something that is conveniently done after a good physical and emotional thwacking— *gets dragged away forcefully*

Fav thing: everything. Everything ever. He’s my little guy. I love his heart and his courage and his spirit. I love his competitiveness and his inability to change who he is for people. I think the thing about James Potter that makes him so special is what people most often misunderstand about him. He is cocky, and he is arrogant and he doesn’t change for anyone. I’ve seen people misunderstand his kindness and love and write him as if he’s a bit of a doormat and while I do think he makes a lot of sacrifices for others, James potter is not afraid to push back! And he will!

Least fav thing: literally nothing. I love every aspect of his character so so so much. Even in Vows Made Of Wine there’s this unwritten rule between everyone to Leave James Alone when they’re being shit and making shitty decisions because he’s just That Kind Of A Guy.

Favourite line: everything he says in sophs of his bones (I’m not caught up tho due to it makes me insane (positive) and unfortunately I have to focus on my real life (very unfortunate) rn)

Brotp: him and James. They are one person split in two. They are trees that grew intertwined. They cannot be seperated because it throws the laws of the universe off.

I will also say, he is always happy with Lily too. The problem is Lily isn’t always happy with James.

nOTP: hmm. I think I more get really annoyed when he gets misunderstood within a dynamic. Like, I think James and Evan or James and Mary would never ever work. But I think you could make a case for a lot of different ships with him just because he falls in love with everyone.

Random headcanon: i want a fic with magical hockey in Canada. James and Regulus vacation to Canada and there’s magical hockey. What does that look like?? I don’t know man. But he needs to become obsessed with it and build an ice rink in their backyard

Unpopular opinion: I’ve expressed this before but I HATE Bpd (borderline personality disorder) James potter. You have to fundamentally misunderstand who he is (to me) in order to say “yeah this works” and I cannot stand it.

I’ve learned and grown in life and very few random things actually get under my skin anymore, but this is in fact one of them. I’m that “I need to calm down” audio about this.

This is going to be centered within MBJR themselves but if you wanna ask about BroTPs outside of MBJR, lemme know~! I can go on and on about these guys and how Aruto basically has tried to adopt them and the YuaNaki brotop and the IkaAruto brotp listen i got so much

Of course, we know Jin and Horobi are close as father and son but Horobi and Ikazuchi are these two absolute adult figures but while Horobi has mostly a level head, Ikazuchi is a bit more brash. He will jump to defend Horobi and Horobi has to physically hold him back. But honestly, these two are these older kindred souls that go out and just sit under a tree and look at the stars and talk philosophical things. Ikaika also tries to get Horobi out of Daybreak Town more and thus, tends to invite him to his workplace and planetarium. Subaru is always happy to see him and even though Horobi is slightly hesitant to get to know Subaru, he warms up to him and basically signed the adoption papers. Horobi and Naki on the other hand are the two parents of MBJR. They tend to sit in silence most of the time and simply enjoy each other's company and often share books and things of the sort. IT's like a mini book club between them. Because of my headcanons that Horobi knits, he gives Naki a sort of scarf even though they don't need it. It's his silent way of showing that he cares. Naki is Horobi's reminder to take time to himself and relax, to enjoy life and if anything...Naki wants to help Horobi find a "dream" even if it's something small. It's one step at a time. Horobi is also fiercely protective of Naki as is Naki of Horobi and while all of MBJR would shoot Gai on sight, Horobi is rushing to get to his ass first just to stab him.

Ikazuchi and Naki share exactly one (1) brain cell and Naki has it most of the time. Ikazuchi is only allowed to have it because he's planning something that could either cause some sort of chaos or he's driving. He tends to rope Naki into dumb things (like how they tore off Gai's clothing) and records these moments to share in the MBJR group chat or to Aruto and Yua. These two are highly competitive with one another and Ikazuchi triggers Naki's feral brain half of the time. Don't let them play Mario Kart together because they can and will yell at each other. Naki on the other hand, is Ikazuchi's restraint half of the time but because they're being...influenced by Ikaika and Fuwa...sometimes they willingly join Ikazuchi on his escapades. Subaru is roped into this most of the time as well.

Naki and Jin on the other hand is more so Naki is the dotting sort of person who reminds Jin to take care of himself and Jin just replies with this cute, "I know~!" if Horobi is a hands-off but caring parent. Jin visits Naki at A.I.M.S often, just to hang out and chat and sometimes with Yua as well. He brings lunches for the humans and a new book for Naki to read. Compared to sitting in silence, Jin is always sitting in a chair beside Naki just watching them work oro stealing Naki's jacket because, "It's unfair that Naki has all the cool clothing!!!" and honestly, these two trade clothing the most out of all of MBJR.

Ikazuchi and Jin are just begging for trouble. Ikazuchi can restrain himself half of the time but most of the time, these two are egging each other on when it comes to like the dumbest fucking shit. Ikazuchi is bringing out his motorbike? Jin asks how fast he can drive that thing vs his own flying and suddenly you hear Yua being called up because those two got pulled over by some cops. But if anything, Ikazuchi is the person Jin goes to for spontaneous shopping trips. Sure he can ask for Horobi and he often does but Ikazuchi (and his knowledge of human things is better than the other's) knows things that Horobi doesn't and Ika is like friends with a lot of vendors and thus, they warm up to Jin too.

They all have made a "Subaru Protection Squad" because Subaru tends to visit Daybreak often whenever he isn't busy. He's still working out his own Singularity but with Ikazuchi by his side, he's gotten a lot better in understanding it. He went to MBJR to understand more about it and Horobi has basically adopted him. Sometimes Subaru makes deliveries to Naki just for the excuse to hang out with them and Jin is always barging into Subaru's personal space just to tackle him into a hug.

Now that Horobi and Jin have a much healthier relationship, Jin actively calls Horobi his father in public. Horobi also has begun collecting magnets since Jin draws a lot and hangs his drawings on the wall with the said magnets but has this framed picture of all of MBJR (Subaru included) on the wall as well.

favorite thing about them: His presence during class trials is so funny to me. Like Hajime has this air of confidence to him, Keade is very confident and extroverted, and Shuichi is a Literal Detective, so them leading class trials all makes sense, but Makoto is like. Just a guy??? Who's trying his best??? I love him so much least favorite thing about them: Like I said with Shuichi, all protags can be a bit mean to the other students. favorite thing about them: waaahhhh so much. god i love zane. his character arc is so so good. His dub voice is I think my single favorite dub voice so far ( a high honor; I love a lot of the dub voices!!), I love how he can go from mumbling to a snarling roar in an instant. I love his Hell Kaiser design, I love the way the show storytells through his deck and how he plays it. He's also in my Single Favorite GX Duel so I think that counts as a Favorite Thing.

least favorite thing about them: genuinely trying to think about. what my least favorite thing about him is. hm. I do adore dub zane but it's a shame a lot of his relationship with respect re: dueling and himself and others got cut in order to play up a little bit of a "edgy mid-2000's tough guy bully older brother" characterization with him in the dub; the respect thing is such an important part of his character and it sucks to lose that!!
