Fictober 18 - "You always have a plan"
"What do you want?"
Donna shrugged. "I dunno. Whatever's on tap."
"Alright. Be right back."
Eric disappeared around the corner to the bar, and Donna turned her attention back to the game. This bar was on the outskirts of Point Place and had a dingy reputation, but at least they had a big TV with the football game on. The Cowboys were making mincemeat of the Broncos.
"Look at him go," a voice came from behind her and Donna turned around, startled. She thought she and Eric were the only patrons in the back room, but now she saw that a large, sandy-haired man was sitting in the shadows of the far back table. The man caught Donna's eye, and then nodded to the TV. A Dallas receiver had just gained his team another first down.
"It was an impressive catch," Donna nodded. She didn't want to invite any further conversation, so she turned back around.
"Man, what I wouldn't do for a girl who likes football."
Donna's shoulders tensed. She didn't say anything, hoping he'd take the hint and stop trying to talk to her.
"'Specially one who looks like you."
Now the hair on the back of her neck stood up as her fear was confirmed. He was definitely hitting on her.
Where the hell is Eric? she thought. Why's it taking him so long to grab a couple of beers?
She kept ignoring the Creepy Guy - maybe he'd think she didn't hear him, that she was so engrossed in the game.
No such luck.
"Are you a natural redhead, sweetheart?" He belched indelicately. "There's only one way to find out, you know." His voice got louder as he approached her now, flexing his arms against the table.
Donna put on a brave voice. "Back off. I'm just trying to watch the game."
"And I'm just trying to talk to you," he drawled, undeterred. He was so close now that Donna could smell the alcohol on his breath.
She flinched and raised her voice, hoping Eric would hear. "Leave me alone!"
"Yeah? And who's gonna make me?" Creepy Guy reached forward, like he was going to touch her shoulder.
"Hey! Me."
They both looked up, and Donna sighed with relief. Eric had returned. He stood a few feet away from their table, holding a glass of beer in each hand.
"Eric!" Donna ran to him. He set the beers down and embraced her with one arm, while he gave Creepy Guy a hard look.
"Are you bothering my girlfriend?"
Creepy Guy snorted. "You're kidding me. You're with this scrawny guy?" He was still talking directly to Donna.
That was it. Eric started to roll up his sleeves - like he was preparing to hit the guy. "Are you gonna leave her alone? Or do I need to make you leave her alone?"
Eric's menacing words didn't seem to have the desired effect. Creepy Guy looked bemused, not scared.
"Oh yeah, tough guy?" He stepped forward, so his face was just a few inches away from Eric's. The guy had a few inches and at least 100 lbs on Eric. "I'd like to see you try," he snarled.
To his credit, Eric didn't back down. "Fine. You wanna step outside and settle this?"
Creepy Guy's smile stretched wide across his pointed, rat-like features. "It's your funeral." He turned on his heel and walked towards the front door.
As soon as he was out of earshot, Donna grabbed Eric's arm. "Don't do this," she begged him. "Please. Please, Eric. That guy's huge, he's gonna beat the shit out of you."
"I know."
"You - you know?"
Eric nodded. "Look, I want to pummel him for the way he was talking to you, but he's like, two of me put together. And he seems... unhinged."
Donna nodded with relief. "And dumb. You'll be able to talk your way out of this."
"I just did."
"What do you mean?"
Eric jerked his thumb towards the side door. Donna didn't notice it before.
"I mean - he's waiting for me up front. And we're about to slip out the side door."
A slow smile spread across her face as she realized what he was thinking. "You always have a plan," she said, in wonderment.
Eric tapped his temple. "Fight smarter, baby, not harder." Then he gave her a once over, with concern. "Are you okay?"
"I am now." She looped her arm through his. "Let's get out of here."
She couldn't wait to reward him.

Like the painting I did of Norwalk’s House Robots, I had another failed Polaroid photgraph attempt I recycled into a canvas. For a while, I had no idea what I wanted to do with it— but a few days ago, I found my inspiration.
Browing Team RioBotz’s website, I was on the page that detailed all their active combat robots. While most know this team for their BattleBots entry Minotaur, they’ve been in the world of robot combat since the early 2000s. They’re most known for their lineage of drum spinners, with most of them featuring Touro (Bull) in their name.
(The reason why Minotaur broke this naming trend is because of another bot named Toro (a flipper-bot from the same team that created Bronco) that competed in the Original BattleBots, so the team presumably changed the name to better differentiate the two)
When I came across their Middleweight (120 lb) drum-bot (simply named “Touro”), I saw this little logo and knew that it would make for a great painting! Given the bot’s metallic color, I wanted the background to look as such— hence the varied shades.
I’m happy with how this came out, even if it’s not a one-to-one replication of the logo. Regardless, it’s so cool that it’s the word “bull” shaped like a bull :D
(For reference, here’s the webpage I mentioned that contains the image featuring this logo; https://www.riobotz.com/combat)
