The true nature of sacrifice! This week, Peaches and Michael are dancing around the maypole in honor of 1973’s THE WICKER MAN! In addition to discussing this cult classic’s five decades of cinematic influence, our hosts delve into its foreboding commentary on the precarious nature of belief. Joining the conversation is filmmaker and acclaimed horror host Melissa LaMartina (aka Aurora Gorealis), whose evolving love of the movie led her to create a uniquely immersive experience. Then, producer extraordinaire Bren O’Callaghan speaks on his own devotion to the film, sharing details on creating Summerisle specific scratch-n-sniff cards, as well as his visits to the movie’s actual shooting locations. From hobby horses to Christopher Lee’s Cher wig, this episode has it all! Go!

bren/zee & lucky/garth in a western au ??
heCK YES thank YOU
Comet feels a hard yank on his shirt, and his body hits the ground with a grunt. Overhead bullets pierce the air, lodging into the wall where he had been leaning against just moments before. On the ground with him, Zatanna gives him a steady glare. He smiles sheepishly back to her in thanks.
“Lucky!” Zatanna calls her partner over the gunfire. “Are you okay?”
There’s a loud gunshot that rings out and Lucky’s head pops up from behind a few barrels. The feathers in her hair are messy and there’s a smoking pistol in her hand. “Yeah!” Lucky replies quickly, her eyes scanning the main street of town, whoever remained of the group of crooked lawmen took off running with the rest who first ran at the sight of Comet and Tempst riding in.
Zatanna sighs in relief, allowing Comet to help her stand to her feet. She gives him a grateful smile before slugging a fist against his shoulder. “What was all that?” Zatanna demands, the plumes of her own feathers tip down over her face and Comet can’t help but grin at the sight. “We had that under control,” Zatanna says, crossing her arms. Lucky comes over with Tempest at her side, a bit more happy to see him than Zee was with Comet.
“You Pinkerton gals sure had it under control,” Comet nods “Now tell me did you have everything in control before or after those bastards had you and Agent Day there kidnapped and shipped off?” He counters, raising a brow behind his mask. Zatanna’s face turns a shade of pink and mutters in a foreign language. Something Comet was sure wasn’t exactly nice.
“Well we always welcome the rescue, fellas.” Lucky sighs, rolling her eyes. “But this one cost us our one eye witness,” She adds, pointing to one of the bodies lying in the dirt road.
Tempest glances at the sight, then after the trail Mayor O’Callahan’s men took off. “We could catch up to them,” He suggests, looking to Comet. It was their one chance to finally pin all the underbelly crimes and handling Mayor O'Callaghan had been pulling since the day he was elected. Comet, better than anyone, knew this. The masked riders share a look before nodding.
“We’ll see if we can cut them off,” Brennan says quickly. Zatanna watches him, placing a hand firmly on her hip. “Don’t worry, Agent Zatara. I’ll fix this up, you have my word,” He promises with a wink. He sees the way she smirks slightly and her face flushes from something different than anger. There’s a dreamy sigh that comes from Lucky when Tempest gives her hand one more lightly squeeze and the corner of their lips ghosting in a rushed kiss that promises more for later.
Once on their horses, Comet and Tempest ride off. The girls look at the mess left behind and sigh. “We had it under control,” Zatanna insists, fixing the feathers on her head. They’d be fortunate not be fired from the saloon. Lucky lifts her skirts quickly, tucking her pistol away, nodding.
“Of course we did, we’re Pinkerton's,” Lucky agrees. “Though...I ain’t gonna refuse their help now and then,” She adds. “You either, I’m sure, ‘specially from Comet,”
Zatanna speaks in a foreign language again and Lucky laughs.

Portfolio Review with Bren O'Callaghan (10/02/21)
Tumblr media
(View the Portfollio as a Presentation)
I was lucky enough to have a portfolio review with Bren O’Callaghan, where I was able to talk through my current and emerging ideas and gain some really valuable feedback. Bren O’Callaghan is the Curator at HOME in Manchester, and also an artist at Paradise Works. I was excited to be able to talk with Bren as an important figure, not just in the Manchester artistic community but also the national one.
I began the review by giving a visual overview of my practice, showing 6 pieces that I felt were relativity representative of my work, while also allowing me to touch on the key themes and methods that have emerged across my practice. I then introduced the themes I was considering currently, and we talked further about the ideas surrounding queer utopianism.
Bren pointed me in the direction of some of the key moments in the Queer Utopian genealogy- some of which were already on my radar of things to research further, particularly the work of Derick Jarman. This was extremely useful as it has given me a girth of material to draw from and look into, including the Radical Faeries and Nwando Ebizie. Bren also then gave me some very practical advice, including festivals to bear in mind when thinking about applications and how best to go about approaching galleries and curators.
This Portfolio Review was incredibly beneficial not only in the artistic and practical advice I received but also as an experience presenting myself and my work to an important figure in the art world. Over the course of the last two years I have become much more comfortable engaging with and communicating with others, but due to the nature of how communication and events has been impacted by the pandemic, actually having the opportunity to talk face to face (even only via teams/zooms) about my work has been limited. I was able to prove my professionalism and increased confidence through this experience. I am very grateful for the opportunity, and I will be implementing Bren’s advice as much as possible.
