It was easy to feel like a small boat out in the fields, bobbing in an endless stretch of grass ocean, grounded only by the brush of weeds against your legs. Brie felt a prickle in her chest looking up at the sky and seeing clearly every speck of star it had to offer.

Instinctively, she located Orion, counting the three stars of his belt and eyes tracing with practiced movements to Sirius, that glimmered brightly to the left of the constellation. Orion pointed southwest, which was a good enough indicator as any that Brie was, in fact, heading towards Parish. Not that celestial navigation was needed to spot the faint glow of the town, but it was a habit constructed from her childhood spent always gazing up at the sky.

It made her skin tingle up and down the length of her arms when she lingered too long on thoughts of how she was not in fact looking up, but down into an endless wide prairie of nothing, dotted with small falling spheres of rock and gas. It was a teetering sensation, like coming off a merry-go-round or looking down from the top of the Redwick reservoir, punctuated with the strange compulsion to jump.

The grass rustled, not the soft sway of a breeze but the rapid and frenzied scramble of some animal or animals, startled by her approach. It startled her in turn as Brie whipped the light of her booklamp over the tops of the grass, wanting to see, but also not wanting to see the glinting pair of eyes that might be gazing back.

There was nothing there.

Thoughtlessly, Brie continued forward, making it a few more steps before the sound again drew her attention. This time it came from the other side. The shiver that went over her arms now had nothing to do with vertigo, her legs itching against the phantom sensation of something brushing against her legs. She quickened her pace, half running through the grass that was growing taller as she went in, tangling around her calves as it stretched up to her knees. There was a strong smell of earth, wet mud and the decay of plants, though the ground beneath her boots was solid and dry.

Brie wasn’t sure when she broke out into a straight run, only that the glow of the street lights was fast approaching and the grass was once again thinning out. When she got beneath the first lamp, panting, sweat damp on her hairline, she turned abruptly, looking out over the grass with wide, impatient eyes.

Nothing had followed her. The field was quiet.

The sound of a chittering raccoon or possum broke through the silence and Brie took in a breath, not realizing how hard she was itching at her side until she felt the scab beneath her shirt loosen and fall away. She hoped silently she wouldn’t bleed again.

Brie turned off her book light and continued down the gravel road until it turned to pavement beneath her feet and led her home.
