10 Best Cities in the World to See Riding on Bicycle
10 Best Cities in the World to See Riding on Bicycle.Getting out on a bike and exploring a new city is a fantastic way to see how locals live. When you pedal a different route, you can also get a fresh perspective on the city’s landmarks and architecture. The Global Bicycle Index ranked 90 cities worldwide to determine which are the best places for cyclists. The cities scored based on their percentage of bicycle users, weather conditions, infrastructure, and bike-sharing programs. - Copenhagen Whether you're on vacation or a local, riding around town on two wheels is a great way to explore a city. It's also a healthy, eco-friendly and fun option. Copenhagen, Denmark, is one of the world's most bicycle-friendly cities. Its expansive bike network makes it easy for people to pedal on their own. - Montreal Montreal is a bicycle paradise, with hundreds of kilometres of bike lanes and paths. It was ranked number one in North America in the latest annual People For Bikes ranking. The city has embraced cycling “in a big way” over the past decade, creating hundreds of kilometres of bikeways and making it easy to hire a bicycle. The Reseau Express Velo (REV) is one of its signature accomplishments. - Tokyo A sprawling metropolis with Michelin-starred restaurants, tiny shrines, high-end fashion and quirky culture, Tokyo offers a variety of ways to explore. Its train system is the busiest in the world, chugging more than 8.7 million commuters daily through its underground tunnels. But there’s a way to experience the city without getting lost in the crowd: rent a bike. - Eindhoven Despite being known as a city for cars, Eindhoven has an exceptionally dedicated bicycle network. In the centre of town, the car free shopping area is surrounded by a huge multi-lane one way gyratory that separates cyclists from cars. The city also has a great art scene with a number of renowned museums and a fantastic yearly event Dutch Design Week that celebrates design and art in the city. - Bogota Bogota is home to one of the best cycling infrastructures in the world, as well as a cycling culture that’s been praised around the globe. It also has a long-standing Ciclovia tradition where every Sunday, a large portion of the city streets are closed to cars and opened for walking or riding bicycles. You’ll cycle through neighborhoods like La Candelaria, a historic neighborhood that houses Spanish Colonial, Baroque and art deco architecture. It’s also a hotbed of street art. - Seville The city of Seville has become an increasingly bike-friendly destination. Thanks to a bike network that has grown over the years, it could soon challenge Amsterdam as the unofficial cycling capital of Europe. Explore Seville by bicycle on safe and green cycle lanes, and get to know this southern Andalusian gem from a whole new perspective. Take in the river, visit monuments like the Torre del Oro and the Royal Alcazar, and enjoy tapas along the way! - Utrecht Known for its quaint medieval center, Utrecht is one of the best cities in the world to see riding on bicycle. This is according to a new study from Luko, a European digital insurance company that compiled a list of 90 cities to determine the most cycling-friendly towns worldwide. In the Netherlands, it is common for young children to ride their bikes independently. This is an indicator that the city takes biking seriously, ensuring that the streets are safe for everyone to use. - Munich The "bicycle capital" of Germany, Munich is a city where the streets are made for two-wheeled travel. In addition to dedicated bike lanes, it has reduced speed limits on certain streets and offers nearly 700 miles of routes. Whether it's riding the Isar River or biking through the English Garden, cycling is a great way to get out and explore this gorgeous city. Besides, it's also the best way to get to some of the best beer gardens around! - Copenhagen Copenhagen is a bike-friendly utopia with an expansive network of bike paths and lanes. It’s also a safe city for cyclists of all ages and abilities. Its bridges, including Olafur Eliasson’s Circle Bridge (Cirkelbroen), offer spectacular views of the city. Bicycles are a big part of everyday life in Copenhagen, and the city has been making a concerted effort to increase cycling rates. - Montreal According to the annual ranking of People For Bikes, Montreal is the best city in the world to see riding on bicycle. This bilingual city, set on an island in the St. Lawrence River, has embraced bicycles in a big way. The city’s bike infrastructure is impressive, with hundreds of kilometers of paths and lanes, according to Copenhagenize, as well as a bike share program called BIXI. You can rent a bike or take a tour from one of the many reputable local companies. Read the full article

"WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS” Y SU MEJOR EXPRESIÓN LOCAL

HOW TO MAKE YOUR TRAVEL WRITING MORE INCLUSIVE
A guide to avoiding writing solely from the Western gaze.
BY MARIANA ZAPATA
2020 changed every aspect of how we travel, from our ability to do so to the safety measures we now take.
As the world comes to grips with the failings of many of its systems, particularly as they pertain to marginalized communities, especially people of color, who have been disproportionately affected by the double pandemic of COVID-19 and police brutality, there is one more aspect of travel that needs to change: how we write about it.
The origins of travel writing are frequently tied to colonizers meandering around the lands they’ve taken, reporting on the customs of the locals, who are often portrayed as less civilized or even as “savage.”
Our idea of travel today may not be all that different. Online travel groups are often filled with fantasy posts about laying on a beach while a sexy Brown person serves you drinks or pictures of White people surrounded by Black children whose lives they claimed to have changed on their two-week trip to “Africa.”
Travel writers aren’t responsible for the behavior of tourists, of course, but we are partly responsible for the images that inform collective perceptions of places. The beach fantasy and the white savior complex were most likely first concocted by travel writers of yore, then sustained by travelers.
When we write for a white Western audience that we assume to be cis, heterosexual, and able-bodied, we effectively close the door to everyone else – and that’s not acceptable. Here are some steps travel writers can take to ensure a wider, more inclusive lens.
Stop and consider
Hold yourself accountable at every step of the writing process, beginning on the road.
“Make sure that the places you’re exploring aren’t just white-owned and operated. Instead, seek out local businesses and places of interest that are owned by members of the community…and that are inclusive of people of all abilities,” says Priscilla Blossom, a queer Latina journalist specializing in travel, culture, health, and parenting.
But don’t tokenize these places in your articles to earn diversity points – authors need to treat them with the same respect as they would a white-owned space.
Before pitching a story, “consider if you are the right writer for an assignment,” advises Uruguayan-American travel journalist Lola Méndez, adding that writers should consider whether they should write about places they’ve never been to or have merely passed through.
Don’t promote places or tourist practices in your content that are disrespectful or exploitative. For example, as a Colombian-American, I find it painful and infuriating to see promotions for Pablo Escobar tours that glorify a mass murderer. Would mass-shooting tours in the U.S. ever be OK? Would you want foreign tourists coming to gawk at the poorest neighborhoods in your city? I hardly think so. Grant other places the same courtesy you’d want for your own community.
Diversify your sources
“Whose voices do you value in your trip planning and research?” asks Bani Amor, a gender-queer Ecuadorian travel writer, in the Bitch Media piece “Check Yourself Before You Wreck Someplace Else.” They add that “travel guides overwhelmingly reflect those who hold the most power in this world – white folks from the West.”
To combat this, Black travel blogger Kay Kingsman advises writers to diversify the media they consume. When you do this, she says, “your writing naturally becomes more inclusive.”
Award-winning travel journalist La Carmina from LaCarmina.com uses her personal experience to inform her approach to writing. “[I] think about the broad spectrum of individuals in my life and include perspectives that they would find most helpful and meaningful,” she says.
But you have to do more than follow a couple of bloggers of color and pat yourself on the back. While researching and interviewing, use local sources and experts who represent marginalized perspectives. Kingsman does this by reaching out to travel bloggers who are local to the destinations she covers on her blog, The Awkward Traveller, and actively smashing stereotypes and misconceptions in her content. Seeking the most authoritative voices to speak about a particular place is essential in travel writing.
Watch your tongue
“In addition to proofreading for grammar and flow, we should look over our writing carefully and consider whether our words are thoughtful to all,” says La Carmina.
Countries are not static postcards but complex webs of intersecting histories, cultures, values, and identities.
Blossom nails the heart of the language problem as “anything that really embraces white culture but ‘others’ the culture of non-white [people] or anyone/anyplace deviating from the standard.”
For example, American writers often use the word “exotic” to describe eating bugs, even though it’s a common global practice. Yet the word is rarely used to describe unusual European dishes like calf’s head. This sends a message that travel content is meant for a Western traveler.
The way we write can and often does erase and invalidate the culture, history, and experience of marginalized groups and locals. One of the best examples of this is the use of the word “discovered,” both in a historical context and as a personal claim of travelers. It is often said that Western settlers discovered the giant sequoias of the Sierra Nevada in California, despite the fact that indigenous groups had known about them for centuries. Likewise, travelers don’t “discover” a spot that locals have always known about, they simply become aware of it. Calling instances like this a “discovery” implies that something only matters when outsiders (usually Westerners) know and care about it. Local knowledge and perspective is not given importance and is thus erased.
It’s not enough to avoid problematic words. You can cut out all controversial words and still write a narrative that focuses on the Western gaze and treats locals as caricatures that simply provide flavor to the story. Again, treat locals with the same nuance and respect usually given to white Western communities.
Don’t glam things up
Countries are not static postcards but complex webs of intersecting histories, cultures, values, and identities. The tendency to glamorize destinations to appeal to fantasies of leisure effectively prioritizes the wants of Western travelers over the lived experiences of locals.
“Be honest about the complicated history that formed the place – colonization still impacts each and every place around the globe that was conquered by foreign forces. Don’t erase that history in favor of gushing over beautiful architecture,” says Méndez.
For example, many solo female travel writers tout their safe experiences in Mexico as proof that the troubles in the country have been exaggerated. This ignores the crisis of trafficking and femicide that local women have suffered for decades.
Black travel writer Teresa Lynn Hasan-Kerr explains that while we don’t want to perpetuate incorrect stereotypes about the countries that former President Trump would call “shithole countries,” we also shouldn’t use our limited experience in a country to gloss over its realities.
Acknowledging problems is also a way to keep readers safe, particularly travelers of color, who often experience discrimination and harassment around the world.
Before moving to Morocco, Hasan-Kerr thoroughly researched the country. None of the information she found prepared her for the anti-Blackness she faces daily. “I really wish someone had briefed me about the racial harassment [in Morocco],” she says, stating that having that information available would have been helpful to her.
Guidebooks already include disclaimers and warnings pertaining to the safety of female-presenting travelers, so extending the courtesy to travelers of color should be a given.
Inclusivity in travel writing goes well beyond the scope of writers’ influence. However, we do have some say in how we present our own work, in the sources that we use, and in the nuance we add to our content. The lack of diverse editors in the industry is not an excuse to continue writing from a Western gaze.
Mariana Zapata is a Colombian-American travel, sustainability, and lifestyle writer. She has lived and worked around the world, making a home in cities like Miami, Paris, Seoul, and Bogota. You can usually find her at street food stands, judging fashion inaccuracies in period films, or falling victim to her non-existing sense of direction

Figuring out a little bit of the native language may also help make your journey much more enjoyable and provide you with an opportunity to satisfy extra locals. Contemplate brushing up in your abilities, even when only a bit, earlier than you allow for Colombia.
3. Or If You Wish to Study, Colombia is a Nice Place to Research Spanish
In case your stage of Spanish doesn’t prolong a lot previous fundamental greetings, don’t fear! You don’t have to cancel your journey. Colombia is definitely top-of-the-line locations in Latin America to study Spanish.
The usual Colombian accent is commonly mentioned to be a bit simpler for brand spanking new learners to choose up. Whereas there may be numerous slang, the accent (particularly in Bogota) is taken into account very impartial and clear for non-native audio system.
As talked about above, Colombia additionally doesn’t have as many English audio system as another Latin American nations. This implies you’ll have much more alternatives to apply what you’re studying in your day-to-day actions with locals.
You’ll discover language faculties all through Colombia. Most provide day, week, and even month-long applications. There are additionally choices to mix your research with a conventional home-stay or volunteer program. Some faculties even provide a mixture of Spanish and salsa dance programs to get a full really feel for the Colombian expertise. Be sure to learn up in your choices and verify for evaluations earlier than committing.
4. It’s One of many Most Various Locations on Earth
Do you know Colombia is definitely the second most various place on this planet, after Brazil? While you have in mind dimension although, it really comes out on high as essentially the most various nation on this planet by space.
If Earth’s biodiversity had been a rustic, it might be referred to as Colombia.
Nationwide Geographic
This isn’t arduous to imagine when you begin exploring a little bit of Colombia your self. From the Pacific to the Caribbean, from the Amazon Jungle to the excessive, snow-capped Andes, Colombia has a little bit of every thing.
In reality, the nation has over 8,000 labeled ecosystems, protected by 59 completely different nationally designated protected areas, together with nationwide parks and reserves. There are over 50,000 recognized species of animals and/or vegetation in Colombia, with 9,000+ being discovered nowhere else on this planet.
It’s not simply the biodiversity that makes Colombia particular, although. The individuals of Colombia are additionally very various with a mixture of indigenous, afro-descendants, Spaniards, and different worldwide ethnicities.
Colombia has 80+ indigenous ethnic teams with 64 completely different Amerindian languages spoken within the nation. It was additionally dwelling to the primary “freetown” within the Americas, Palenque, which was established by escaped slaves on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. You’ll additionally discover smaller communities of Arab, Romani, Jewish, Korean, and different immigrant teams unfold all through Colombia.
This ethnic variety makes Colombia a wonderful place to expertise. The music and cultural traditions of Palenque are thought of a time capsule into the previous, with many African traditions (like drum track and dance) nonetheless practiced locally. You additionally gained’t have to look far for intricately designed conventional handicrafts from the varied indigenous teams of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
Even the meals of Colombia celebrates the nation’s ethnic variety, from almojábanas (a kind of bread) to indigenous herbs like guasca which is used within the iconic Colombia ajiaco soup.
5. Even If You Keep 180 Days, You Gained’t Be Capable of See All the things
After I first talked about that you could possibly go to Colombia as much as 180 days per 12 months, you in all probability thought that was greater than sufficient. Let me inform you from first-hand expertise that even with 180 days to go to, you wouldn’t be capable of see even a fraction of what this unbelievable nation has to supply.
As I discussed, Colombia is various with a lot to see, do, and expertise.
It’s the solely South American nation to have each a Pacific and Caribbean shoreline. It has excessive Andes mountain passes, small pueblos, fashionable cities, desert landscapes, rolling hills, and huge plains. Folks come to go to Colombia for the meals, the tradition, the nightlife, for whale watching and scuba diving, and for jungle treks and journey sports activities.
Guatapé, a must-see in your itinerary
Whether or not you have got six months or six days, you’re going to need to slender down your selections. Fortunately, we’ve a complete itinerary with loads of highlights to see in your go to. Let this function your journey information to profiting from your time.
Should you solely have one or two weeks in Colombia, your greatest guess is to go to simply 2 or Three areas. You possibly can try one of many main cities (Bogota, Cartagena, or Medellin) after which spend a number of nights within the espresso area earlier than heading to the Caribbean coast.
I might advocate swapping out the Caribbean for the Amazon or Pacific areas for a bit extra journey. You possibly can additionally tack on a number of days in Cali in case you are planning to take a look at some salsa lessons.
6. You Must Suppose About How You’ll Get Round
When you understand how huge Colombia is (it’s a little bit over twice as giant as France), you begin to understand the way it may be arduous to see every thing you need to see. Add in the truth that the Andes Mountains run proper down the middle of the nation and also you’ll rapidly perceive why planning the way you’ll get round is vital.
Whether or not you’re taking taxis, buses, or planes between locations, you’ll have to take time restrictions and finances into consideration.
Round Colombia, You’ll Must Navigate Mountains
In the case of Columbia journey, the general public bus system is the most cost effective mode of transportation and infrequently must be booked forward of time. That being mentioned, buses should not the quickest mode of transportation. Winding mountain passes and slender two-lane highways imply even touring between two comparatively shut locations can take a full day.
These wheels will certainly take you over the mountains
Flying is a a lot faster and extra handy choice, particularly in case you are touring between distant areas. Fortunately, Colombia has a lot of finances airways. You’ve received your truthful variety of choices to seek for. On the draw back, this does restrict the spontaneity of your plans a bit.
Up to now, one other consideration when reserving journey was security. Touring by public buses to go to sure areas of Colombia was not beneficial even just some years in the past. Nevertheless, because the Peace Settlement with the insurgent FARC, you possibly can go away these security considerations behind. Opting to take buses vs flying is now rather more a private resolution based mostly on finances and journey model.
Getting Round is Straightforward in Most of Colombia’s Cities and Cities
Within the cities, you can find many ride-share and taxi apps. Uber is in style (although it could or might not be completely kicked out of Colombia in Jan 2020) in addition to DiDi and Beat. You may normally flag down taxis off the road, however I like to recommend ordering one by way of a taxi app or by calling as an alternative.
Bear in mind: taxis flagged on the street might not all the time be metered. Negotiate your fare beforehand.
Simply your typical bus in Colombia!
The general public transportation choices in Colombian cities are sometimes overcrowded however general respectable. In Medellin, the metro system is a degree of pleasure within the metropolis. Then again, the TransMilenio system in Bogota is despised virtually universally by locals and vacationers alike. (I might take it or go away it.)
As a plus, Colombians are very pleasant and normally joyful to assist misplaced vacationers who’re utilizing public transportation programs.
7. It Has a Darkish Previous However a Vibrant Future
It’s truthful to say the recognition of a sure Netflix present has boosted curiosity and journey to Colombia. As somebody who has fallen in love with Colombia—the individuals, the tradition, the meals—it may be irritating that so many individuals nonetheless have that Narco picture of Colombia of their thoughts. Nevertheless it’s additionally a part of the nation’s previous, and it will probably’t be ignored in these Colombia journey suggestions.
Colombia was as soon as one of the crucial harmful locations on this planet. From the streets to the best ranges of presidency, drug cartels dominated with an iron fist. Kidnapping and homicide occurred every day and no nook of the nation was really untouched by violence.
Even after the autumn of Pablo Escobar and the main cartels, Colombia nonetheless struggled with ongoing inside battle between authorities forces, paramilitary, and insurgent teams just like the FARC.
Colourful road scenes in Guatape
However there’s excellent news! In the previous few a long time, Colombia has turned a nook to begin shifting right into a a lot brighter future.
Immediately Colombia is seen as a gem of South America with rising financial alternative and a powerful tourism trade. Its greatest export is now not medicine, however flowers. And other people these days go to to take pleasure in a unique sort of stimulant—scrumptious Colombian espresso.
Whereas we will’t ignore Colombia’s darkish previous, it’s future is brilliant. Your go to offers Colombia a much-needed tourism enhance.
8. Visiting Colombia is Protected
If it wasn’t clear from the part above, Colombia is a a lot safer place than it as soon as was. All the favored depictions of narcos and cartels that you simply examine or see on TV are straight out of the ‘80s. Colombia is safer at the moment than many locations on this planet, particularly for vacationers.
Violent crime charges have plummeted. The cartels have misplaced their maintain on the nation and cocaine manufacturing has dropped drastically. The 2016 Peace Settlement between the Colombian authorities and the FARC rebels even earned then-President Juan Manuel Santos the Nobel Peace Prize.
The most typical crime that guests face is straightforward pickpocketing. When you positively don’t need to go wandering alone at evening with a number of cash, with a little bit widespread sense, most vacationers can be wonderful. Unhealthy luck and dangerous timing can occur to anybody, however general, Colombia is taken into account protected for vacationers.
That being mentioned, there are specific areas you’ll need to keep away from, particularly across the borders, as they’ve a better security threat. It’s all the time greatest to verify your authorities journey advisory itemizing earlier than you go to, as conditions do change.
It Would possibly Be Protected However You Nonetheless Want Journey Insurance coverage
Even within the most secure locations on this planet, typically you simply run right into a little bit of dangerous luck. Having journey insurance coverage in Colombia is an effective way to present your self peace-of-mind irrespective of the place on this planet you go to.
Colombia does have its fair proportion of theft and pickpocketing. Journey insurance coverage may also help you keep away from a ruined journey if one thing does go lacking.
Colombia additionally provides some nice journey sports activities choices. Journey insurance coverage that covers these kinds of actions is sensible in case of any accidents.
General, discovering the very best journey insurance coverage coverage earlier than your journey to Colombia is only a good transfer. This is without doubt one of the most vital suggestions I can provide! My favourite insurance coverage is World Nomads.
9. And as Colombians Say “Don’t Give Papaya”
Colombians have a saying: “dar papaya.” It actually means “to present papaya.” The precise translation although is extra of a warning to not set your self as much as be taken benefit of or robbed.
Like I discussed above, the most typical rip-off vacationers in Colombia face is pickpocketing. Telephones and cash are by far the most typical objects to be stolen. And more often than not vacationers get their pockets picked as a result of they had been “giving papaya.”
Don’t flaunt your costly gear!
Pulling out your cellphone in the midst of the road, flashing your cash on the bar, grabbing sketchy taxis off the road, or casually tossing your cellphone on the desk whereas consuming dinner are good examples of this.
“Giving papaya” doesn’t simply apply to your cellphone or pockets. It’s doing something to draw consideration to your self and probably your valuables. Wish to keep away from being robbed in Colombia? Don’t flash cash or put on costly jewellery, don’t get drunk and stroll dwelling alone, and so forth.
Don’t give papaya, take into account your security while you’re out and about, and you might be positive to have a a lot smoother journey.
