Tumblr media
Masterlist
Summary: Fifteen calls and fifty texts were enough to let her know something was wrong, but Daniel was there to hold her hand in the middle of the storm.
Pairing: Daniel Ricciardo x fem driver!reader
Warnings: Angst and fluff because that’s the only combination we know in this house. Also I suck at writing warnings.
Word count: 5.4k
A/N: This is the last part let’s gooo! Okay, I just wanna thank you all for the love in the other two parts because never imagined having so many notes in something that I made. The insanity. You’re awesome. Anyway, now we’re gonna go back to regular schedule of my dear M&M, but let me know if there’s something you’ll like me to write? I’m up to suggestions. Okay again, thank you for the love, means the world to me. Enjoy and see you soon!
---
Part 3.
Everything started in Brazil, but the downfall was in Abu Dhabi because it seemed like all the weird things happened there. Under the sunny and absolutely warm Brazilian sun, things started out good in the race, but in the last ten laps she could feel something was wrong. Breathing was starting to get harder; her head was starting to get dizzy, and her stomach was feeling weird. She figured out it was the heat but she couldn’t really think about it; all she knew was that she needed to finish that race. She was P4, it was her best finish yet in a race, and even if she was far from the Redbull in P3, she needed to push and finish. She needed to do it, but it was the hardest thing she ever did. Those ten laps were the longest and shortest of her life. She couldn’t even remember them when they were done, and at the same time every single lap felt like it was eternal. It was a normal thing for any driver to have a hard race when the temperature was too high, but this was worse. It was way worse.
The problem was when she reached the parc fermé. It felt like her brain was shut down and she couldn’t react. All she could do was stop the car and stay there, sitting waiting for her brain to react and give the order to her body to do something, anything, but especially to get out of there. The thing was when it didn’t happen. Daniel was the one who realized as he was speaking to Lando, or that’s why he said to her later. He had to explain everything to her because she couldn’t really remember. All she could remember was Daniel calling her name over their helmets and then feeling claustrophobic. Never in her life had she felt claustrophobic while wearing a helmet; it was her second nature; it was part of her and of who she was. She loved her helmet and it was probably one of her favorite objects, but that afternoon it became her worst nightmare. She had no idea if Daniel heard anything over the noise and their helmets, but out of breath she whispered a little ‘Danny get me out’. It was a plea that her team could clearly hear from the garage, but somehow, she just could think of her boyfriend who was right there in front of her. She couldn’t think about her team or anyone else around but him. She had no idea if it was the way she begged at him, but in an instant, she could feel someone unbuckling her and then her helmet. Then she felt two pairs of arms getting her out of the car and her lilac helmet getting off her head. Then she saw Daniel and the panic in his eyes.
It was all a blur, and all she remembered were pictures of it. All she remembered was Lando, Alex and Mick by their side, trying to cover them from cameras even if it was impossible, all while Daniel took her to the medical center in his arms. Then she remembered George asking Lando what was happening as she begged Daniel to not let her go. She also remembered the worry on her friends’ faces doing as much as they could to help because it wasn’t just Daniel carrying her to the medical center; it was her boyfriend taking her and all the boys knew. At first, the only who knew about them was Alex, and he found out by accident. One of the things she never liked about Monaco was how terribly small it was. So small that she lived near part of the grid and in the same building that Alex. It was practical, considering she and Daniel were living 30 meters from each other, but it was complicated for all the other things. Until that day they had never run into Alex. She thought it was a miracle, considering she had run into his girlfriend more than once, but neither had she run into Alex or Lily into Daniel.
But their luck ended a Monday morning as they started to move their things to their new apartment. As soon as they got the keys to their new home, they were so excited that they decided to take something there. The easiest choice was some of their trophies and the first helmets they switched at the end of their first year at Renault. She loved the ‘Stop being them’ design on this helmet and he loved the purple design on her ‘The Man’ helmet, so it was an easy choice when they decided to do it. But her favorite part was probably the ‘For my favorite teammate from your favorite teammate’ inscription Daniel wrote in his cute handwriting, followed by a little heart that made her melt and made her love it even more. When Alex ran into them, Daniel was carrying a box with the inscription ‘Cherry’ on the side, and she was carrying another similar box that had written ‘DR’. It was easy for Alex to put two and two together, and even if they wanted to act like nothing was happening, he dropped a very simple ‘I know you’re together, so cut the crap. Want some help with the boxes? Lily is upstairs so we can help’. She froze in that instant, thinking about excuses and justifications for why they could be carrying boxes with their names to her car. She wanted to invent a good excuse, but before she could even say a word, Daniel threw a simple ‘Na, don’t worry, mate, we’re fine. Just don’t say a word about us’. She looked at Alex smiling while Daniel kissed her forehead and kept walking like it was nothing, all while she stood there with her jaw hanging. But it was probably worse the way the rest found out. It was a weird thing to happen, but most of them went to the same club in Monaco. It started as a normal night out with friends, drinks, and music in the VIP section of a club. After a Monaco race, they all deserve it, especially to get their heads out of racing, even if for a couple hours. They drank, laughed and danced like regular human beings, and it was fun, leaving aside the fact that she couldn’t kiss her boyfriend. All she and Daniel would do was looking at each other from the distance, wink and smile, maybe sit together, dance a bit, and from time-to-time Daniel would rest a friendly arm around her waist or shoulders, but that was it. It was fine considering they were going to get out of there and go straight to their home to rip each other’s clothes. It was fine until Pierre and Charles started trying to set her up with one of their friends. Very politely she said no a hundred times, but they would insist. She knew they meant well, they just wanted their friends to be happy, but they never imagined that her ‘Guys, believe me, I’m okay, so I pass’ was because she already had a man to go home to. Of course, she told her boyfriend about Charles and Pierre’s idea and Daniel wanted to jump in their necks but she managed to calm him down with promises of a mind-blowing blowjob and of letting him do whatever he wanted with her as soon as they got home.
It worked for a while, but when the Monegasque and the French man introduced her to their friends, Daniel just lost it. He got tired of seeing someone trying to take his girl away from him, so he asked very politely if they could stop trying to set his girlfriend with someone in front of his face because it wasn’t fun. She could never forget the reactions in their faces. They were all with their jaws hanging, waiting for the couple to say it was a joke, but they never did. The thing was that Pierre and Charles weren’t the only ones who heard. Mick had his mouth in a perfect O and his eyes fully open. Lando had a cheeky grin probably waiting for it to be another joke from his teammate. Charles and Pierre were just hitting each other’s arms. Antonio and Alex were trying to contain his laugh all while George, Max and Carlos looked at each. The moment Daniel decided to round her waist with his arms and kiss her bare shoulder and then her neck was when they finally understood it wasn’t a joke. She was too focused looking at Daniel, who looked nothing but proud, but she could hear from a ‘What’s going on?’ and ‘Que carbron, macho!’ to a ‘What a son of a bitch, he got her’ and some ‘I can’t believe this’ in British accent. When she finally turned around, she could finally see Pierre talking with Antonio and him shrugging and shocking his head, probably saying he wasn’t going to fail her best friend.
But her probably favorite part was how they asked again if they were really together. To prove that it wasn’t a terrible bad joke, she dragged Daniel with her and moved to a blind spot where nobody could see them except their party companions, and then she got in her tiptoes to give Daniel a very much PG peak on his lips as she smiled like a little happy girl. But Daniel was having none of that, and to prove his point, he went one step further and gave his girlfriend a proper kiss, making out with her for a couple of seconds as if they weren’t in a room full of people. No regular friends would kiss like that. No regular friends would place his hands were Daniel placed his, over her small back, almost touching her ass like there were no was people around them. All she did as a response was to slap his chest to put him in place, even if she loved it and they were all smiles because of it. All they got as a response was their friends telling them to get a room, but then a bunch of congratulations as they swore to keep the secret. Then Valtteri found out thanks to Tiffany who could somehow smell it, and then Lewis found out because of Valtteri and Yuki found out because of Pierre and she also made them all swore to not say a thing, turning it into the biggest secret of the paddock and the grid. But they did keep the secret, especially at the worst of times and when the couple needed it the most.
What happened in the medical center was a complete mess that everyone on the grid tried to hide from the press. She knew about it because she saw the interviews later and she made a mental reminder to send everyone gifts as a way to thank them for covering their backs. All the boys said that what Daniel did was what any of them would have done. All of them talked about how great friends her and Daniel were, and some even mentioned the pair were best friends and the press actually believed it. He told her how he saw her not getting out of the car and not answering when he was calling her; how even Lando didn’t really understand what was happening. Daniel told her how she was speaking so softly that he thought that she somehow lost her voice; how he somehow heard her begging for him to let her go from the belts, and how she was absolutely pale even with the high temperature coming from the car. He told her how he didn't though twice about carry her all the way to the medical center as she was holding onto his neck, asking him to stay with her.
What happened was as simple as somehow her pressure getting too low, and that mixed with the heat, the pressure for the race, and the water her body lost made it all a terrible mix that ended up in a very bad heatstroke. The doctors said it was a miracle she didn’t faint while driving and they decided to leave her there resting for some time until she felt better to go. The problem then was Daniel. He didn’t want to leave. He refused to leave, and even when Michael and Blake came for him, Daniel told them to start writing a check because he was not going anywhere without her. Daniel only got convinced to leave and do his job when her trainer walked in and told him to not worry because he was going to call him if anything happened. They also insisted for Daniel to leave because her Alfa Romeo team was coming and they couldn’t find out, not like that. It wasn’t until they were in her hotel room, snuggled between the white sheets, that she asked why he risked getting caught when there were cameras everywhere. She knew the answer because she would have done exactly the same, but she somehow needed to hear it from him. Daniel didn’t have to think for a second about his answer. A very serious ‘I saw your face and I got terrified because I didn’t know what was wrong, but then I became blinded by worry and fear, and I knew I had to take you out. I knew I had to protect the woman I love. Fuck 'em if they don’t like it’. That answer wasn’t rehearsed like the rest; it wasn’t like the prepared ‘She’s one of my best friends and my former teammates, but also a fellow race driver’ that he repeated in front of every single camera. That answer came straight from his heart, which only made her fall in love with him a little more. Besides, how couldn’t she love him a bit more every single minute of every day when Daniel loved her so much that he was willing to risk everything to carry her to the medical center right in front of all the cameras and people at a full Interlagos circuit? Part of the people who already thought there was something between them got convinced when they saw the way Daniel took care of her. Part thought they were just besties taking care of each other. But another part started to believe right there and then about them having something. They were indeed best friends, but a pair of best friends who also were a very happy couple, who were very much in love and who were living together in a beautiful apartment they got together in Monaco. Best friends who were making plans for a life together and were going to spend their winter break together in Perth to have some peace on his farm. Best friends who organized everything perfectly so their families could formally meet after New Year. Best friends who made each other moan the other’s name almost every night until they were exhausted. Really good best friends. That day in Brazil was when the rumors started again and they began the terribly boring task of denying everything day after day. She explained that Daniel just wanted to make sure she was okay. She denied everything single rumor and she answered that she was happy when someone asked if she was happy with her current dating situation. Every single answer was rehearsed and written down by her team; everything was calculated and planned, and everything was working perfectly fine until it wasn’t. She had no idea how it happened, but as soon as they got to Abu Dhabi everything blew in their faces.
They were sleeping in his hotel room without a bother in the world and without having any idea what was happening. They were snuggled and tangled in her hotel bed as any other Tuesday morning before they went out to train and it was quiet and beautiful, but then Daniel woke her up telling her to check her phone. She couldn’t ask what was happening because Daniel was also on the phone speaking with someone. It was a little moment of stillness and even silliness that she had as she tried to find her phone on her nightstand, rubbing her eyes as she wondered what could be so important that she didn’t even get a good morning kiss. But the question was answered as soon as she saw the notifications on her phone. She didn’t hear any of it because her phone was in silence as every single night, but she had fifteen calls and over fifty texts. She didn’t even get to open the text to know something was wrong. All she had to do was look at her boyfriend’s worried face to know it couldn’t be good. Then she saw it. There were at least twenty pictures of them together. In some pictures they were sitting in his Mclaren, laughing and smiling like happy kids, which was nothing bad or new, but then in other pictures they were kissing in his car. Then there were more pictures of them in her car as Daniel was kissing her knuckles and cheek or she was kissing his jaw. Then they were in the door of their building, Daniel’s arm around her waist as he kissed her forehead and she buried her face in his neck, both with big smiles on their faces as they opened the door and got in. But the last one was probably the worst because it was a video of them hand in hand walking out of their home. Someone had been following them to prove they were together and they had no idea about absolutely anything. Someone had been following for a long time and decided to drop it all that day, right before the last race of the season. Their little bubble and biggest secret were gone in a second and they didn’t even have an option or an opinion on the matter. She couldn’t understand how it happened; she couldn’t understand who did it. She couldn’t understand how they went from spending the previous night absolutely jet-lagged, snuggling in bed while they made plans for their vacations in Verona and Australia, and making love to each other in a mess of smiles, kisses and love, to that nightmare they were living. Daniel was still on the phone when she threw her phone to the end of the bed and away from her. She didn’t want to see it. She didn’t want to hear any of it. All she wanted was to run away from there and hide in their home. She wanted to forget about the next and last race of the season and go back to her normal, domestic life with Daniel. She wanted to go back to the regular, silly problems like still not finding the perfect curtains for their bedroom, the perfect rug for the living room, or organizing her books in the built-in library, even if the eighty percent of the shelves where full of their helmets and trophies. She wanted to run away, but it was Daniel’s hand grabbing hers who made her stay in place. He laced their fingers together and kissed her knuckles as she felt the tears start to run down her cheeks because she was terrified. She knew perfectly fine she was lucky if she wasn’t losing her seat because of it. She wasn’t a Grand Prix winner, and she knew she could be replaced any day with any other driver, simple because she was sleeping with the enemy. The conflict of interest was too big, and to add to the mess, she had been lying to everyone for months. She had been lying to every single person on her team and on the factory. Everything she worked for could disappear in a second, but on the other side was the man she loved more than anyone in the world and with whom she was planning to spend the rest of her life with. Daniel was also risking everything for her. He was also sleeping with the enemy and getting himself into an absolute mess, but there he was, holding her hand tightly as he spoke on his phone, probably trying to fix the mess. She wasn’t paying attention to what he was saying, especially not when she heard her phone buzzing. She picked up because Daniel winked and smiled at her, trying to make her feel that everything was fine when it wasn’t. She picked it because she was a grownup woman who could deal with her problems and disasters, but as soon as she saw the name of her PR officer on her screen, she felt like a little girl. The conversation was shorter than she expected, which somehow made it worse. She answered some questions with short phrases as she heard the disappointment in the voice on the phone and then the line went dead.
The first thing she did was throw her phone to the bed again, not wanting to know anything about the outside world, at least not for some minutes. The second thing she did was hug Daniel and bury her face in his chest as she cried even more. That’s not how they were planning on doing things. That’s not how they wanted to tell the world they were together. They didn’t even know how they wanted to make it public; they didn’t think about it because they were busy with everything else. They were planning on thinking and talking about it while they were on vacation and perhaps doing it public the next year, but all their plans were ruined.
She stayed there for a long while, not even caring what time it was or if they had somewhere to go. She couldn’t care less about training when Daniel’s arms were protectively wrapped around her body, while he kissed her forehead again and again, whispering everything was going to be fine. There was nothing she wanted to believe more than that, but in that second everything looked far from okay.
She had no idea how long it took her to stop crying, but it could have been a long hour. It felt like she ran out of tears, but she was feeling as terrible as she was in the first seconds when they found out. What also didn’t change was the knock in her throat. It was hard to breathe, so the last thing she could do was talk, but then she decided she needed to do it, if not for her, then for her boyfriend. “They asked me how serious this is” she finally whispered, her hands holding onto his shirtless body as if her life was depending on it. “What did you tell them?” Daniel asked in a soft voice, the one that he normally used to not affect her nerves more on very bad days. The one he normally used to calm her down on those very bad days. Then she thought about the conversation with her PR officer. She thought about the questions and her answers and how she had to explain shortly the reality of her personal life. She thought how she'd have to speak about it for longer than she would like to, and then another wave of tears came to her eyes. “That we are very serious. That we are a couple. I had to tell them that we live together. I had to tell them about Monaco. I didn’t want to, but I had no option, Dan” she sobbed, trying to clean the tears from her cheek with the back of her hand, but it was useless because they were automatically replaced with more.
“Hey, hey, it's okay” Daniel insisted, moving his arms from her waist to hold her face with both hands. “Its okay, baby” he repeated, and by the way he was looking at her, she knew it was really okay. He wasn’t mad because, after all, she didn’t have any more choice. “They wanna have a meeting later today. They’ve talked with your team and we’ll have a meeting here in the hotel” “I know, they told me. They want us to be there at 4” Daniel affirmed, stroking her cheeks carefully with his thumbs. “What if they make me choose between you and racing?” she whispered, closing her eyes for a second because she felt stupid. She knew the question was stupid. There was no way anyone could make her choose. There was no There was no a single clause or part of her contract that said who she could or couldn’t date, but there were other excuses they could use to take her out. After she saw Antonio lose his seat, she was just scared, even if her contract was signed for two more years. But then again, even if the question was stupid, she somehow needed to hear from her boyfriend that it was going to be fine, even if he had no idea either.
“Look at me. Eyes on me, baby girl” he stated, kissing her forehead as soon as she opened her eyes. “That’s it. Listen to me very carefully. We’re not gonna break up. Nobody is gonna pull us apart. Nobody can and nobody will because I’m not gonna let it happen. I love you and what we have and what we've built together, so nobody is taking you away from me. I’d give you my seat if I had to, but we’re not breaking up and you’ll keep racing, did you hear me?” “You’re a silly” she breathed, stroking his cheek with the back of her hand. She knew things weren’t that easy, but the fact that Daniel thought about it made her heart melt. “You’re adorable and silly for thinking I wouldn’t do it for you. I’m closer to retiring than you, so if I had to give my throne to anyone, that'd be my girl. Besides, it would be fun to follow you around the world while you race and kick asses” Daniel joked, finally making her smile. Even if it was an absolutely sad smile, Daniel was the only one who could make her smile at the worst moments, and they both knew it.
But that smile disappeared as fast as it came when the ghosts came back in an instant as her phone buzzed again. “When all this shit happens and everything gets loud and crazy, I just- I’m so happy you’re here” she murmured, trying to ignore everything around them. “I couldn’t be more thankful and in love with you and God, I can’t lose you, Danny. I don’t wanna lose you and us. They can take everything from me but not you, baby” Daniel insisted, and she knew he was going to repeat all those words until she believed it. But besides repeating again and again the same words, he opened his arms for her to find shelter there. There were counted things that made her feel safer than his hugs, and there was nothing that made her feel more at home than being against his skin, so it worked. Damn, how it worked.
“You won’t lose me. You won’t. They won’t take us apart. They can’t break us. They can’t and they won’t. I promise they won’t” Daniel affirmed, kissing her forehead again and again while she rested her head on his shoulder. She had no idea how she had the strength to move even if it was just to get more comfortable. It was too early, earlier than they normally woke up, and she was already exhausted, but she moved to look at her boyfriend. She moved to sit on his lap and place their foreheads together as she looked at his eyes. It was the warm chocolate color in his eyes, the way he stole the smallest and softest kiss from her lips; the way his hands were carefully stroking her skin to comfort her, and the way their noses were brushing together, what made her feel like she could really face everything that came their way. It was the simple way they could stay in absolute silence and make all the noise go away that made her believe that they could fix all the mess. But it was the way Daniel looked at her that made her feel like the most powerful and loved woman in the world, and heaven knew she loved him in the exact same way. “I love you so much, Dan. I love you so, so much. You have no idea” she whispered, stroking his cheeks once again, because she needed him to know no matter what happened later.
She was expecting Daniel to say he loved her back. Maybe waiting for some cheesy or silly comeback to make her smile even more. Instead, Daniel moved one of his hands away from her skin, clearly looking for something on the nightstand with his stuff over them. Knowing Daniel, she thought he was probably going to put one of his –their– playlists on his phone, but he didn’t. The room kept quiet and Daniel didn’t grab his phone, but she knew he picked something up that she couldn’t see because she was too distracted looking at him. “Marry me” he whispered after he placed his forehead against hers, once again, stroking her cheek with his free hand. “Marry me, Cherry. Let’s prove them wrong. Let’s prove them this is for forever and way beyond our job” he begged, and she ran out of air and words. There it was, Daniel goddamn Ricciardo, the man who she loved more than anyone in the world, asking her to marry him, probably in the worst and most terrible moment. The man who had too much shit to handle and who had been dealing with people criticizing and talking bullshit for too long. But even with all that, he was asking her to marry him when the press -and everyone- was going to eat them alive for denying everything for months. He was asking her to be his wife when she less expected it; and it was so typical Daniel that she should have imagined, but she was clueless at the same time.
There was nothing she wanted more than to say yes. She wanted him for forever since the moment they met and even more since the day he stole that cherry lollipop, but she didn’t want him to feel the pressure of doing it in such a bad moment. She wanted him to ask because of the right reasons and not because he felt pressured. “Baby if this is about this whole mess, there’s no need to do it. We don’t have to do it now” “This is not about that, princess. This is about me wanting to spend the rest of my life with you. This is about me not wanting to be apart from you. I’ve been thinking about it for a while and this is not how I was planning to do it because I don’t even have a proper ring, but here” he explained, finally grabbing her left hand in his to put one of his rings on her finger. That was what he grabbed from the nightstand. “I’ll get you a cool one as soon as this is all solved, but please marry me. Please” As she was looking at the silver ring on her hand and how it looked huge on her finger, she couldn’t help but let the tears roll down her face and a smile appear on her face. They were a disaster; her face was full of tears, their eyes absolutely tired, and they were half naked only and only wearing their underwear -and his shirt-. And the worst part was how they were in the middle of a hurricane that was going to turn everything upside down. They were a disaster, but his happy smile was all she needed to believe things were going to be okay. They were a disaster, but she couldn’t be happier to be a disaster with him. They were going to be a disaster together for the rest of their life and that’s all she needed to know. “You really have a wonderful timing, ain’t you, Ricciardo?” she smiled through the tears that at least, this time were happy ones. “Yes. Yes, baby. Goddamn, yes, I’m marrying you” she nodded, grabbing his cheeks to give his future husband a proper, loving, long kiss. And suddenly that 4pm meeting got even more interesting and complicated than she ever thought, but there was nothing they couldn't handle.

"I always just rode the waves,” Rebecca Ferguson says with a shrug. The comment hangs in the air, as if the Anglo-Swedish 37-year-old is only now processing that a combination of currents and tides has led her not just to an acting career but to the brink of big-screen stardom.
“I’ve never been ambitious,” she says. “I’ve always thought that that was a bad thing.” She’s seen others in the industry consumed by constant striving and asked herself why she hasn’t hungered for fame since childhood, slept in cars outside castings, barged into directors’ offices or thrown herself in the path of a producer. “But should I not be burning for this? Out meeting people and networking for the next job?” says Ferguson, who has chosen the sort of quiet, private life outside the big city that so many actors claim to crave. “My life just took another turn. But I’ve always thought: Am I where I should be?”
At the moment, on this late July day, Ferguson is slumped in the backseat of a Mercedes-Benz sedan, crawling through rush-hour traffic on the M4 out of London. She is capping off a hectic week during a particularly busy period. Most immediately, she’s coming from a table read for Wool, the Apple TV+ adaptation of Hugh Howey’s bestselling postapocalyptic trilogy. Ferguson is both the star and, for the first time, an executive producer. “I’m sitting in all the different rooms, listening and learning like the students,” she says. She’s filming Mission: Impossible 7, her third tour of duty in the long-running series that first brought her widespread recognition. She’s also promoting the film Reminiscence, the sci-fi noir written and directed by Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy in which Ferguson stars opposite Hugh Jackman. And now she is starting a press push and festival prep for her role as Lady Jessica ahead of the much-delayed release of Dune (in theaters October 22), director Denis Villeneuve’s reimagining of Frank Herbert’s novel. “After this film, I think everyone will see what I see in her,” the filmmaker says. “She has a beautiful, regal, aristocratic presence, elegance. But that was not the main thing: The most important thing for me was that depth.”
After tracing a long, meandering path, Ferguson has landed in a rare and rarified position: ascendant in her late 30s (still an anomaly for women in the film industry) and sought after by some of the biggest names in the business. “When you meet Rebecca, you just see it. She’s very open, candid, collaborative, hardworking, funny—and not pretentious,” says Tom Cruise, who handpicked Ferguson to star opposite him in the Mission: Impossiblefilms, which are known for their demanding shoots. “She just rose to the occasion every single time.”
In February 2020, when the pandemic began, Ferguson left Venice, where she’d been shooting Mission: Impossible 7, and hunkered down with her husband, their 3-year-old daughter and Ferguson’s 14-year-old son from a previous relationship at their farm in Sweden. After four months, Ferguson returned to the M:I set and basically hasn’t stopped working since.
Dune has sat idle for far longer. By the time the movie premieres, more than two years will have passed since it wrapped. Ferguson recently asked to screen the film again: “I miss it,” she says. She ended up bringing along her Mission: Impossible co-star Simon Pegg. After the credits rolled, Pegg broke into a smile and wrapped her in a congratulatory bear hug. “That’s all I needed,” she says.
Despite being a sci-fi epic based on a novel from 1965, Dune feels “very timely,” Ferguson says, pointing to its handling of environmental issues, religious zealotry, colonialism and Indigenous rights. The plot of the film, which cost an estimated $165 million, centers on occupying powers battling for the right to exploit a people and their planet, named Arrakis, for melange (or spice)—the most valuable commodity in Herbert’s fictional universe, a substance that provides transcendental thought, extends life and enables instantaneous interstellar travel. “Spice,” Ferguson says, “is equally about the poppy and oil fields.”
Ferguson’s Lady Jessica is a member of the Bene Gesserit, a powerful secretive sisterhood with superhuman mental abilities. She defies her order by giving birth to a son, Paul (played by Timothée Chalamet), who may be a messianic figure. “She basically just f—s up the entire universe by having a son out of love,” says Ferguson. In her hands, Jessica is equal parts caring parent, protector and pedagogue. Among the skills she wields and teaches Paul is “the Voice”—a modulated tone that allows the speaker to control others.
The movie was shot in Norway, Hungary, Jordan and Abu Dhabi, whose desert landscape stood in for Arrakis. Filming there was particularly arduous, as temperatures exceeded 120 degrees Fahrenheit, limiting the shoot window to only an hour and a half each day at 5 a.m. and again at dusk. “We were running across the sand in our steel suits being chased by nonexistent but humongous worms,” Ferguson recalls, referring to the sand-beasts later rendered in CGI. “To be honest, it was one of the best moments ever. It was the most beautiful location I’ve ever seen.”
Back in London, Ferguson is approaching home. She leaves the following day for a small town on the coast of England, where she plans to spend her first vacation in two years and to do some surfing. “Let’s hope it’s good weather,” she says. “If not, I’ll surf in the rain.” Not that she’s the sort to paddle out into storm swells. “I think I’ve managed to stand on a board once in my entire life,” she says. “But it was quite a high. Complete surrender to the waves and total control all at once.”
Born Rebecca Louisa Ferguson Sundström to an English mother and Swedish father, Ferguson grew up bilingual in Stockholm. She immersed herself in dance from a young age, enjoying ballet, jazz, street funk and tango. Despite being shy and prone to blushing and breaking out when forced to speak publicly, Ferguson found she was at ease in front of the camera. She dabbled in modeling and then, at 15, attended a TV casting call at her mother’s urging. Ferguson ended up getting the lead role in Nya Tider (New Times), a soap opera that became wildly popular, splashing Ferguson’s face into Swedish homes five times a week.
When her role ended about two years later, Ferguson was adrift. She had no formal acting training to fall back on, no clear sense of how to steer a career and no major connections to the industry. She had a short run on another soap and appeared in a slasher flick and a couple of independent shorts, then…nothing. “I was famous in Sweden, but I didn’t really have an income anymore,” she says. “So I went and I worked in whatever job I could get.” That meant stints at a daycare center and as a nanny, in a jewelry shop and a shoe store, as well as teaching tango, cleaning hotel rooms and waitressing at a Korean restaurant. She eventually landed in a small coastal town named Simrishamn, where she lived with her then-partner and their toddler son, content to be a where-are-they-now celebrity.
When fame again came calling, Ferguson ran away. She was at the flea market when she recognized the acclaimed Swedish director Richard Hobert, and he saw her. As he shouted her name, Ferguson grabbed her son, who lost his shoes and sausage, and fled. “I panicked,” she says. “I don’t know why.” When Hobert eventually caught up to her, Ferguson tried to act nonchalant as he proceeded to tell her he’d admired her work and pitched her on the lead role in his next movie: “I’ve written this role, and I think I have written it for you. Do you want to read the script?”
Her work in Hobert’s A One-Way Trip to Antibes earned her a Rising Star nomination at the Stockholm International Film Festival. She quickly got an agent in Scandinavia, then one in Britain. On her first trip to take meetings in London, she read for the lead in The White Queen, the BBC adaptation of Philippa Gregory’s historical novels about the women behind the Wars of the Roses. Ferguson got the part, and her portrayal of Elizabeth Woodville, queen consort of England, earned her a Golden Globe nomination and the admiration of at least one Hollywood heavyweight.
Ferguson was in the Moroccan desert filming the Lifetime biblical miniseries The Red Tentwhen the assistant director whisked her off her camel. “We’re going to have to pause shooting,” he said as he asked her to dismount. “Tom Cruise wants to meet you for Mission: Impossible. We’re going to fly you off today.”
Cruise had seen Ferguson’s work in The White Queen and her audition tape and couldn’t believe she wasn’t already a major star. “What? Where has this woman been?” Cruise recalls exclaiming to his new Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie. “She’s incredibly skilled,” Cruise says, “very charismatic, very expressive. As you can tell, the camera loves her.” Ferguson landed a multi-picture deal to star opposite Cruise in the multibillion-dollar franchise. He and McQuarrie built out the role of Ilsa Faust for Ferguson, creating the anti-Bond girl, an equal to Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. “We could just see the impact she could have,” he says. “She’s a dancer. She has great control of her body, of her movements. She has the same ability to move through emotions effortlessly.”
Ferguson threw herself into the films and quickly found a shorthand with the cast and crew. “There was a dynamic that worked very well with all of us,” she says. “One of the things I absolutely love is doing all the stunts.” That physicality has given her a reputation as an action-minded actor. “It doesn’t matter that I’ve done 20 other films where I don’t kick ass,” Ferguson says. “Mission comes with such an enormous following. That was what made my career.”
Ferguson’s M: I movies bracket a number of films in which she played opposite marquee names: Florence Foster Jenkins, with Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant; The Girl on the Train, with Emily Blunt; The Greatest Showman, with Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams; Life, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds; Men in Black: International, with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson; The Snowman, with Michael Fassbender; Doctor Sleep, with Ewan McGregor. And now Dune, opposite Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem, Zendaya and Chalamet, whom she calls “one of the best actors, if not the best actor of his generation—of this time.” She was similarly impressed by Zendaya, who plays the native Fremen warrior Chani. “She’s quite raw and naughty and fun,” says Ferguson. “She has an enormous f— off attitude.”
When Ferguson first spoke to Villeneuve about appearing in the movie, “he started telling me about this woman who was a protector, and a mother, and a lover, and a concubine,” she recalls. “I was like, ‘I’m sorry. You want me to play a queen and a bodyguard? And you want me to kick ass and walk regally?’ I was like, ‘Denis, why would I want to do that? That’s the last thing I want to do.’ ”
After the call, Ferguson says, “I went downstairs to my hubby and said, Oh, my God, he’s amazing, but I’m not going to get the job. I just criticized the character.” Ferguson worried she was being cast as a stereotypical “strong female character,” where “it’s constantly, ‘She looks good, and she can kick.’ That is not what I want to portray.”
Ferguson hasn’t always been able to work with collaborators who’ve given her the space to question or opine. “I’ve been bashed down. I’ve been bullied,” she says, though she opts not to say by whom. That was never a concern with Villeneuve, who welcomed her critique. He and his co-writers had already decided from the start to make women the focus of their screenplay adaptation, and he promptly offered her the part.
“I want Lady Jessica to be at the center, the forefront. For me, she’s the architect of the story,” Villeneuve says. “I needed someone who will convey the mystery and the dark side of the film in a very elegant and profound way. Rebecca was everything I was hoping for. She’s so precise. She brought a beautiful, controlled vulnerability—it becomes very visceral on-screen.”
Ferguson vaguely recalls trying to watch the 1984 version of Dune, directed by David Lynch, in her youth, but she fell asleep. And she had never opened Herbert’s novel until being offered the part in the new adaptation. As she dug into the book, she says, she learned that her character was subservient and far more like a concubine, forced to eat alone in her bedroom, not spoken to and not allowed to speak. Ferguson ended up relying primarily on Villeneuve for her research and prep—his notes and comments, his references and the pages in the book he suggested she focus on. “I would feel ignorant not to have read Frank’s book at all,” Ferguson says, though she admits there are parts of the sprawling novel (which Villeneuve is splitting into two films) she’s only skimmed. “I have to finish it.” That will not happen on her upcoming vacation, however. “Absolutely not,” she says “I am surfing.”
By the way, if you saw, I am snaking on the ground, snaking around my room to get good Wi-Fi—it’s not some dance or yoga thing,” Ferguson says. “You have to do that in this old house.” It’s a week and a half after our first meeting, and Ferguson is at her new home, a more than 500-year-old property southwest of London that has, over the years, been home to numerous English Royals. It’s more spartan than stately now. “Empty except for a rock star,” she says, turning her phone’s camera to reveal a framed duotone poster of Mick Jagger that’s leaning against the wall. “We haven’t even started renovating.
Ferguson has returned from her holiday fortified and with renewed confidence, thanks in part to her success on the surfboard. “I went up nearly every time,” she says cheerfully, “but the waves weren’t very high.” She shrugs. “I was proud. I was up. I rode them, not the other way around.”
After years of going with the flow, Ferguson is eager to replicate that sense of control in her career. She values her role as an executive producer on Wool, she says, “because I am, for the first time, a part of it from the beginning.” She relishes weighing in on every aspect, from casting (the show recently added Tim Robbins) to cinematography to her character—which has not always been easy for her. “Why do I feel it’s difficult to speak up? I still battle with these things,” she says. Alluding to those times she was pushed around in the past, Ferguson says, “I was angry, but it was more me getting off at ‘How can I let that happen? Why am I letting myself react this way?’ And I take it with me to the next thing where I go, ‘OK, how do I stop that from happening?’ ”
She is learning that she can ride on top of waves without giving up her agency or maybe just let them break against her. “I want to feel I can go home and think, That was a hard day or that pissed me off—and that’s OK,” Ferguson says, with a nod and tight smile. “Because I still stood there as Rebecca. I didn’t shift.”

Behold Dune: An Exclusive Look at Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and More
Timothée Chalamet remembers the darkness. It was the summer of 2019, and the cast and crew of Dune had ventured deep into the sandstone and granite canyons of southern Jordan, leaving in the middle of the night so they could catch the dawn on camera. The light spilling over the chasms gave the landscape an otherworldly feel. It was what they had come for.
“It was really surreal,” says Chalamet. “There are these Goliath landscapes, which you may imagine existing on planets in our universe, but not on Earth.”
They weren’t on Earth anymore, anyway. They were on a deadly, dust-dry battleground planet called Arrakis. In Frank Herbert’s epic 1965 sci-fi novel, Arrakis is the only known location of the galaxy’s most vital resource, the mind-altering, time-and-space-warping “spice.” In the new film adaptation, directed by Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, Chalamet stars as the young royal Paul Atreides, the proverbial stranger in a very strange land, who’s fighting to protect this hostile new home even as it threatens to destroy him. Humans are the aliens on Arrakis. The dominant species on that world are immense, voracious sandworms that burrow through the barren drifts like subterranean dragons.
For the infinite seas of sand that give the story its title, the production moved to remote regions outside Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, where the temperatures rivaled the fiction in Herbert’s story. “I remember going out of my room at 2 a.m., and it being probably 100 degrees,” says Chalamet. During the shoot, he and the other actors were costumed in what the world of Dune calls “stillsuits”—thick, rubbery armor that preserves the body’s moisture, even gathering tiny bits from the breath exhaled through the nose. In the story, the suits are life-giving. In real life, they were agony. “The shooting temperature was sometimes 120 degrees,” says Chalamet. “They put a cap on it out there, if it gets too hot. I forget what the exact number is, but you can’t keep working.” The circumstances fed the story they were there to tell: “In a really grounded way, it was helpful to be in the stillsuits and to be at that level of exhaustion.”
It wouldn’t be Dune if it were easy. Herbert’s novel became a sci-fi touchstone in the 1960s, heralded for its world-building and ecological subtext, as well as its intricate (some say impenetrable) plot focusing on two families struggling for supremacy over Arrakis. The book created ripples that many see in everything from Star Wars to Alien to Game of Thrones. Still, for decades, the novel itself has defied adaptation. In the ’70s, the wild man experimental filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky mounted a quest to film it, but Hollywood considered the project too risky. David Lynch brought Dune to the big screen in a 1984 feature, but it was derided as an incomprehensible mess and a blight on his filmography. In 2000, a Dune miniseries on what’s now the SyFy channel became a hit for the cable network, but it is now only dimly remembered.
Villeneuve intends to create a Dune that has so far only existed in the imagination of readers. The key, he says, was to break the sprawling narrative in half. When Dune hits theaters on December 18, it will only be half the novel, with Warner Bros. agreeing to tell the story in two films, similar to the studio’s approach with Stephen King’s It and It Chapter Two. “I would not agree to make this adaptation of the book with one single movie,” says Villeneuve. “The world is too complex. It’s a world that takes its power in details.”
For Villeneuve, this 55-year-old story about a planet being mined to death was not merely a space adventure, but a prophecy. “No matter what you believe, Earth is changing, and we will have to adapt,” he says. “That’s why I think that Dune, this book, was written in the 20th century. It was a distant portrait of the reality of the oil and the capitalism and the exploitation—the overexploitation—of Earth. Today, things are just worse. It’s a coming-of-age story, but also a call for action for the youth.”
Chalamet’s character, Paul, thinks he’s just a boy struggling to find a place in the world, but he actually possesses the ability to change it. He has a supernatural gift to harness and unleash energy, lead others, and meld with the heart of his new home world. Think Greta Thunberg, only she’s a Jedi with a degree from Hogwarts. Paul comes from a powerful galactic family with a name that sounds like a constellation—the House Atreides. His father and mother, Duke Leto (played by Oscar Isaac) and Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), take their son from their lush, Scandinavian-like home world to preside over spice extraction on Arrakis. What follows is a clash with the criminal, politically connected House Harkonnen, led by the monstrous Baron Vladimir (Stellan Skarsgård), a mammoth with merciless appetites. The baron, created with full-body prosthetics, is like a rhino in human form. This version of the character is less of a madman and more of a predator. “As much as I deeply love the book, I felt that the baron was flirting very often with caricature,” says Villeneuve. “And I tried to bring him a bit more dimension. That’s why I brought in Stellan. Stellan has something in the eyes. You feel that there’s someone thinking, thinking, thinking—that has tension and is calculating inside, deep in the eyes. I can testify, it can be quite frightening.”
The director has also expanded the role of Paul’s mother, Lady Jessica. She’s a member of the Bene Gesserit, a sect of women who can read minds, control people with their voice (again, a precursor to the Jedi mind trick), and manipulate the balance of power in the universe. In the script, which Villeneuve wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, she is even more fearsome than before. The studio’s plot synopsis describes her as a “warrior priestess.” As Villeneuve jokes, “It’s better than ‘space nun.’ ”
Lady Jessica’s duty is to deliver a savior to the universe—and now she has a greater role in defending and training Paul too. “She’s a mother, she’s a concubine, she’s a soldier,” says Ferguson. “Denis was very respectful of Frank’s work in the book, [but] the quality of the arcs for much of the women have been brought up to a new level. There were some shifts he did, and they are beautifully portrayed now.”
In an intriguing change to the source material, Villeneuve has also updated Dr. Liet Kynes, the leading ecologist on Arrakis and an independent power broker amid the various warring factions. Although always depicted as a white man, the character is now played by Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Rogue One), a black woman. “What Denis had stated to me was there was a lack of female characters in his cast, and he had always been very feminist, pro-women, and wanted to write the role for a woman,” Duncan-Brewster says. “This human being manages to basically keep the peace amongst many people. Women are very good at that, so why can’t Kynes be a woman? Why shouldn’t Kynes be a woman?”
As fans will know, there’s a vast menagerie of other characters populating Dune. There are humans called “mentats,” augmented with computerlike minds. Paul is mentored by two of them. There are also the bravado warriors Duncan Idaho and Gurney Halleck, played by Jason Momoa and Josh Brolin. Dave Bautista plays a sinister Harkonnen enforcer Glossu Rabban, and Charlotte Rampling has a key role as the Bene Gesserit reverend mother. The list goes on. In the seemingly unlivable wilds of Arrakis, Javier Bardem leads the Fremen tribe as Stilgar, and Zendaya costars as a mystery woman named Chani, who haunts Paul in his dreams as a vision with glowing blue eyes.
The breadth of Dune is what has made it so confounding for others to adapt. “It’s a book that tackles politics, religion, ecology, spirituality—and with a lot of characters,” says Villeneuve. “I think that’s why it’s so difficult. Honestly, it’s by far the most difficult thing I’ve done in my life.” After finishing this first movie, he’ll just have to do it all over again.

Xiao Zhan: Extraordinary Journey, Starting from This
Translator’s Note: This article comes from Harper’s Bazaar Oct 2019 Side Issue.
To Xiao Zhan, the Summer of 2019 was destined to belong to “The Untamed”. The drama’s popularity and high viewership garnered Xiao Zhan, who was the lead role in “The Untamed” as “Wei Wuxian”, the most attention of this summer. Our extraordinary journey shall stop its time in the summer. The Abu Dhabi Emirates Palace Hotel glistens under the brilliant sunlight. This grand palace, costing 3 billion USD, carries with it the lovely dreams of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with hopes that it will become a local landmark building. Whereas for us, this is where we will start our extraordinary journey.
Tumblr media
This summer was very hot, and there was not a single shower that was memorable.
We strolled on the Sir Bani Yas Island, the “Noah’s Ark” of Abu Dhabi, the capital of UAE, measuring 5,963km away from Beijing, with ground temperatures at 45°C.
If there were really a “Noah’s Ark”, it probably looked like Sir Bani Yas Island. It carried the hopes of the founding father of UAE – in its history, the clan family of UAE used their enormous wealth on this desert island and created the biggest wild animal reserve; they grew more than 3.5m fruit trees on this arid land and carefully cultivated them everyday; they brought in more than 30 different endangered species onto this island for release.
Xiao Zhan was just 20 meters away from a 4 day old giraffe calf. The young calf stumbled ahead, learning its steps. This was the first time Xiao Zhan was up close to a wild giraffe. Everyone was bending low and looking down, moving carefully and silently, so that we would not provoke the alert mother giraffe. The guide informed us that these seemingly gentle animals actually have a irritable temper, and an angry giraffe could easily kill a grown lion with their kicks. As our jeep got closer to them, the hidden giraffes became clearer, and we saw 5 to 6 adult giraffes surrounding the trees, quietly eating the leaves. Under the sunlight, Xiao Zhan slowly moved closer, until he was standing next to them, quietly observing them, and enjoying the rare peace and serenity of this summer.

“Packing my bags for an unknown journey”
The Summer of 2019 was destined to belong to “The Untamed”. This web drama, adapted from “The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation”, became one of the hottest topic online after a few days of broadcast. Xiao Zhan, who starred as “Wei Wuxian” in the drama, also became one of the hottest names of this summer.
The first time Xiao Zhan performed on stage was on X-Fire, a talent search show, as an amateur contestant. Thereafter, the first real big performance was when he was part of the performance for Zhejiang New Year Eve broadcast. After multiple rehearsals, as he stood onstage and the spotlights came on with a “pa” sound. Instantly, his mind went blank, and he said that his movements were entirely based on survival instincts.
Tumblr media
“I remembered I was especially nervous, and when I was backstage, I was so nervous that I was shaking nonstop, I could not say a word. When the spotlights came onto us, there was one or two seconds of memory loss, as in my mind went blank. After that I had no choice, I saw that my teammates got into their positions, so I quickly walked to mine.”
To the amateur Xiao Zhan then, the entertainment business was all glitz and glory – an interesting world filled with the unknown. Only after he really entered the business, he realized that everyone had to put in a lot of effort in order to gain a little bit of attention. After entering an idol group, Xiao Zhan spent a great deal of effort practicing singing and dancing, wanting to use hard work to catch up with the others’ professional training – once he practiced until his toe nail came off, but even then, he never stopped. His character is warm but tenacious, when he encounters difficulties he rarely speaks of them, instead he will learn to cope, he always says “it will be fine after a night’s rest”, and continue to fight the next day. In 2017, he joined the production of two dramas consecutively, “Battle Through the Heavens” 《斗破苍穹》 and “The Wolf” 《狼殿下》. These two dramas opened the doors to an actor’s world to him. From the first scene until the last, from the winters of Shangri-La to the hot summers of the Elephant Mountains, his exhausted body could not contain his itching desire to become an actor. He was deeply fascinated by the roles and lives of the people in the scripts.
Tumblr media
When he first received the script for “The Untamed”, Xiao Zhan felt that he was totally different from “Wei Wuxian”. Xiao Zhan is not a talkative person, instead, he is a very quiet person. When they were script reading for the first time, the producer was there as well, and Xiao Zhan had to continuously remind himself that “I am Wei Wuxian, Wei Wuxian is me, I am WeiWuxian, I am now a very lively talkative person, I have to make everyone adore me”. After establishing this belief, he blended into his character, and allowed the character’s emotions and his merge into one. After the broadcast of the drama, he himself would read reviews online – “It seemed like his smiles are different every time, possibly even his cries are different as well, did he design it as such?”
However, it is precisely that Xiao Zhan does not know all these techniques, but instead he blended into the role, and allowed the story to direct the character’s emotions, and used that character’s status and feelings in his acting.
Xiao Zhan said “The role is really very big, and the span is really long. Because when we shoot dramas, it is according to scenes, for example, the final scenes were shot like 2 days into the start of the shoot, and I needed to quickly get into the situation. And then the next day could be another different scene, switching back and forth, I would get into a confused state. I remembered the most anxious period was in Heng Dian, I would be drowsily doing my make up in the morning, after which I got pushed onto the bus by my assistant, dragged to the studio, start shooting, after that was done my assistant would say ‘We are OK with this side, let’s go to B group’. At that moment made me feel like ‘Am I alright? Is it alright performing this way?’, it was a very concerning period for me.”
Tumblr media
But when it was time to shoot, another actor told Xiao Zhan that no matter what happened behind the scenes, as long as the director shouted “Action”, you need to adjust yourself to your best status, you need to give your greatest passion, because the audience will only see what is done after “Action”. Even if you are in low spirits that day, you might be going through the darkest days of your life, but once you are at the studio, standing in front of a camera, the director yelled to start shooting, from that moment on you are no longer yourself.
Xiao Zhan smiled as he said, “That’s cruel, but that’s an actor’s job.”
Tumblr media
“I am not a brave person, but I need to become a brave person”
In the winds, a herd of antelopes and deer ran past us, Xiao Zhan grasped the dagger that signified strength and bravery, as he stood on the red rocks on the side of the cliff. The scenery before us are a rarity – it took billions of years of tectonic movements to create this miraculous sight. On an island in the Gulf of Arab, there actually exists such an alien sight. In order to get to this cliff, you need professional guides and you need to climb up and down for half an hour or so. The usually quiet Xiao Zhan also exclaimed “So beautiful!” in spite of himself. We could use an unknown adventure to describe life – the more mysterious it is, the more you want to explore.
Xiao Zhan said that he is not a brave person, but it is life required him to become braver – only the brave can face all of the unknown and mysteries in an unknown adventure. Previously, he had to face the transition from an amateur to an artist, the adjustment from a commoner’s life to a life under the bright spotlights of the stage; now he faced the tight scrutiny of his life under the spotlight.
Tumblr media
After the end of shooting of “The Untamed”, many felt that Xiao Zhan became more lively than before, and he spoke more often. In the past, he was always uncomfortable facing strangers, but now he will use a very active attitude to communicate with others, in hopes of receiving more information from that. The role not only gave him more attention, it also gave him strength and growth.
For his future planning, he laughed as he said that he had not decided. He was just passionate about acting and hoped that he could move ahead in the path of becoming a good actor, one problem at a time, and become braver and stronger. He felt that this is not just about himself, many of his friends and young people are the same – undaunted by the difficulties in life, and become stronger as a result. This is like the antelopes who are almost being baked under the intense heat of the desert, unafraid of the sun, sprinting ahead, never looking back.
Tumblr media
“No one will like you for no reason”
Xiao Zhan’s father once said this “No one will like you for no reason, if someone likes you, you have to cherish that person’s feelings.” Xiao Zhan truly believes in this.
In his youth, Xiao Zhan liked Stefanie Sun, and went to her concerts and album sales events. He hoped that he could catch a glimpse of her from afar, watch her shine onstage, immerse himself in her voice, and learn from her, become a better person, become a star who could shine for another person. He said that that was how the youth of his era fan an idol. The idol is a truly an idol, the motivation to encourage himself forward. Now, he cherishes all of his fans’ love for him, and he does not reject the term “traffic” – this is a term that many would avoid. (TN: Traffic is a term that is used in China to describe idols with a lot of fan following.)
“You might feel that traffic is not good, right? Feel that traffic is another derogatory term? Actually I feel that traffic is quite fine, of course the term to me means that a lot of people know you, like you, I feel that’s a good thing. At least I feel that no one can be high traffic forever, what’s most important is how you handle it, how you face the traffic, and let this traffic become a motivation to move forward, I think this is very important.”
Tumblr media
He hopes that he can translate the love from his fans to become his motivation to move forward. An actor could depend on a popular drama to quickly accumulate fame and attention, but the art of performance requires professional training and experience accumulation. Xiao Zhan’s favorite actress is Zhou Xun. When he spoke of her, his tone utterly reveals him as a fanboy, “I don’t know how she evolved to this.” Our answer was simple, time and talent, both of which you cannot do without. Talent will help your potential in the domain of acting, and if fate ordinates, help you grasp the opportunities that knock on your door. Whereas time is the sharpening stone, every minute and second spent on the acting career will show itself in the performances thereafter.
“There are no small roles, only small actors.” Staying true to his original intentions and initial thoughts, doing his best in his own profession, seriously working hard in the acting domain, he will eventually find his own place.
Xiao Zhan said, “In this era where traffic comes and goes, staying true to myself, staying real, I feel this is the eventual goal. But it is so difficult to do this.”
Wish him well.

Q&A
Q: Before you came to Abu Dhabi, what you did imagine it to be? A: The image I had was that, endless deserts and wilderness, soaring majestic buildings.
Q: When you knew that our journey is somewhat similar to an adventure, being with animals, what did you imagine it to be? A: I thought about it. Something like African savanna, sort of like animal migration, herds of animals moving past you, especially spectacular. However, the animals on the African savanna are wilder, over here, the wild animals are mostly the gentler antelopes, giraffes.
Q: In your personal life, are you a person who also likes adventures? A: Yes, I can be considered as such.
Q: When there are many things that the results are unknown, does that excite you? A: If there are many things in my life that I already know the results, my interest in the new and unknown will wane. I prefer not knowing the results, there are many paths to take, and the destinations could all be different, this makes me feel more excited.
Q: So in your imagination, Abu Dhabi suits your sense of unknown? A: Yes. It is just very mysterious, a feeling of an unknown land, to be explored, and full of endless treasures.
Tumblr media
Q: There are so many animals on the island of Sir Bani Yas, which do you want to contact or wish to take a picture with? A: The giraffes. To be able to take a picture with them, to get up close with them, I just feel this is very exciting. I have never had the opportunity, I used to only go to the zoo. Being able to contact animals in the wild is very rare.
Q: This time you were able to look into a giraffe in the eye, how did you felt? A: Just that I am able to look at it in the eye.
Q: Aren’t you afraid of giraffes? A: I am not afraid, I feel that giraffes are quite cute, why do I need to be afraid of it?
Q: They are quite strong. A: The giraffes?
Q: Did you know that in the culture of Abu Dhabi, daggers signify strength. In the ancient times, the Emirates used them as a self-defense accessory. Their founding father, Sheikh Zayed, almost wore one for half his lifetime, and daggers are found in many of his portraits. Even now, the young Emirates frequently wore them in public. A: The sign of bravery and strength. Actually, when I saw this dagger, I felt that it gave me bravery and strength, the start of an adventurous journey.
Tumblr media
Q: Holding the dagger and walking along the cliffs, how did it feel like? A: Wow, every inch of this land is mine, I felt that I could jump down that cliff, there was nothing to fear. Especially when the wind came and blew open my windbreaker, it was especially refreshing.
Q: What did is the biggest feeling this journey gave you? A: Actually, not many people understood Abu Dhabi, after I came here, I was surprised to find that there were many beautiful scenery and interesting cultural traditions, and the underlying adventurous spirit within. It is like a pair of eyes, showing us new discoveries. Actually, the interesting discoveries that we don’t usually find in our daily lives, and this journey is tinted with the colors of adventure and mystery, makes me feel very excited. This city, it has its own cultural background, the collision with new things, is a very wondrous feeling.
Q: If your friend wants to go to Abu Dhabi for an adventure, what recommendations do you have? A: Actually there are plenty. I feel that if the friends around me were to come to Abu Dhabi, they have to experience the unique Arabic culture, the buildings here and their totems, I feel that these have special meanings. Those of my friends who loves art can go to Abu Dhabi Louvre. And there’s one more thing that cannot be missed, that is the adventurous journey to get in touch with nature, I feel this is especially great. Abu Dhabi’s deserts and islands, will really satisfy your adventurous desires to explore the world, you can look up and see the flying saker falcons, then look down to see the running antelopes and cheetahs, and turn around to see the giraffes standing behind you.

Kihyuk | “Don’t Lie to Me.”
genre;; realistic, idol life, Kihyun and Minhyuk are best friends 4evr
warnings;; Kihyun’s fractured rib and Minhyuk’s back injury 😢
words;; 2922 (3k)
author’s notes;; I am just weak for best friends Kihyuk okay?? and I started writing the first part before Kihyun’s fractured rib, and after that I thought that it would be cute to add the scene where Minhyuk is caring too??? so enjoy 😍
Send me a ship and a number and I’ll write something! (✻Ask Box)
The microwave beeped, and grabbing the towel from the counter, Kihyun reached up to pull open the door. Carefully retrieving the long, flat cloth bag of sand from within, he hissed as it settled into the palm of his hand. Even through the extra layer of cloth that was supposed to protect his sensitive skin, it was hot to the touch. Well, that wouldn’t do; as eager as he was to get this in to Minhyuk, who really needed it right now, it would have to wait for a while longer. Quickly, he deposited it on the counter in front of him, poking at it with a finger every minute or so. At last, it settled to a more bearable temperature, and the main vocalist hummed in approval. Picking it up once again, he made his way to the room he shared in the dorm with Minhyuk and Hyungwon.
The first thing Kihyun saw when he walked in was the former of his two roommates, lying on his side in bed. A mixture of regret and pain contorted his face, and the main vocal bit his lip. Earlier that day, during Monsta X’s performance stage at the Fact Music Awards, Minhyuk had hurt his lower back. It was still giving him grief, even now that it had been a while and they had returned to their dorms. The thought of that broke Kihyun's heart, especially imagining the older man suffering through it as he waited for the painkillers to kick in.
When he noticed that Kihyun was there with him, Minhyuk glanced over for a second before huffing, pouting, and averting his eyes. “I told you that you didn’t have to do that for me, right? I'll be fine.”
“How are you feeling, Minnie?” the vocalist asked gently, choosing to completely ignore his friend's protests. "Has lying down helped any?"
Instead of answering right away, Minhyuk curled further into himself. His breathing stuttered with the pain of his movement. "I'm fine...I feel better. Like I wasn't hurt at all."
"Lee Minhyuk, don't lie to me." It came out a bit more harsh than Kihyun wanted, but maybe that was for the best. Minhyuk was exhausted, sulky, and wallowing in self-pity, and honestly all Kihyun wanted was to see him take care of himself. Besides, they didn't have time for any of this bullshit. “Roll onto your stomach, and let me put the heat where your pain is. We're lucky that we have a day to rest, so let's make the most of it and get you healed up."
Finally, Minhyuk relented at Kihyun's no-nonsense tone and with a groan, obeyed. As Kihyun put the hot sandbag on the small of his back, he relaxed palpably. “There we go.” The younger man smiled a bit and reached out to rub Minhyuk’s shoulders. “Soon you’ll be good as new, hm?”
“Maybe.” From one second to the next, Minhyuk’s voice had gone from its usual sassy tone to small and not so confident. He buried his face in his pillow, and then his chest began to shake with sobs, choking his words as they squeezed from his throat. "Why is it always m--me, Kihyunnie? No matter how much I just try and try, I always end up hurt and you're fine."
"It could have happened to any of us," the main vocalist sighed. Though his voice was matter-of-fact as always, he crawled up further onto the bed and laid down next to him. Taking Minhyuk’s hand and lacing their fingers together, he did his best to be reassuring. "And it's not always you. Hoseok hyung overdoes his workouts sometimes. You know, him and his shoulder. We had to perform as five in Abu Dhabi because Changkyunnie got injured, too. Oh, and remember when Hyungwon had to miss part of our American tour for The Code?"
"I guess," Minhyuk grumbled, glancing over at Kihyun and squeezing his fingers gently. His eyes were still wet, and his voice cracked again as he murmured, “Thank you, Kihyun-ah. I don’t know what I’d do if you weren’t here.”
In response, the younger just smiled. “It's the least I could do for my best friend.”
“Good, ‘cuz I better be.” There was that sunshine smile and little giggle that Kihyun had grown so fond of, and he couldn’t help but return it.
Despite the playful, loving sparkle in Minhyuk’s dark pupils, the older’s eyelids were drooping, too, and his grip on Kihyun’s hand loosened ever so slightly. It was obvious that he could no longer resist the pull of sleep and was giving in to his exhaustion. Within the minute, his breathing grew slower and he was doing his little half-awake hum. Again Kihyun reached out to see if the sandbag was still warm, which it was, and rub Minhyuk's back in slow circles. This seemed to be the thing that finally lulled the older to sleep because when Kihyun glanced over next, he was snoring peacefully.
Another rush of fondness consumed the main vocal. Minhyuk could be loud sometimes, but he was also so cute, often in the most candid of ways. Gently placing the older's hand by his head, in a position it often was when he slept, Kihyun bent down to plant a gentle kiss on his temple.
Four months later.
Los Angeles was always so big and lively, and Kihyun loved it. This definitely wasn’t his first trip to the city, but it never failed to fill him with a childlike wonder and excitement. He leaned close to the airplane window to catch glimpses of the skyline as they flew in, and insisted on a window seat in the car on the way to their hotel so he could look at it from below, too. Of course, he was also super pumped for their concert, but there was still a little while before that. For now, he was just enthralled with the bright, bustling metropolis.
Time always seemed to pass more quickly in the states, however. Maybe it was the rush of the schedules or the relative unfamiliarity of everything. Yet, before any of them really knew it, they were walking out of their last rehearsal at the Staples Center. In only about twenty-four hours, they would be on stage, in front of tens of thousands of Monbebes, starting their final American World Tour performance. It had been a dream of theirs for so long, one that had seemed impossible four years ago, but now they were here. It was real.
Because they had no other place to be until the morning, everyone had a little free time to do whatever they wanted. Though it was late at night, and Kihyun felt exhausted, he took this opportunity by the horns. Once they were back at their hotel, he almost immediately accosted Minhyuk with a big smile on his face, begging him to come along and explore with him. Of course, the older said yes, and the two of them set off.
Kihyun and Minhyuk easily got sucked into the night lights of Los Angeles, and it made them both high, in a strange way, on its allure. As they picked their way along the streets to Koreatown, they laughed and talked like true tourists. Despite how far it was to their destination, the food that awaited them there was worth it. They’d been here the year before and enjoyed it so much that they wanted to do it again. Minhyuk shelled out some cash for what was practically a feast of street food. After thanking the nice lady who owned the cart, they went to a nearby bench to eat.
Their conversation was rapid-fire, with plenty of joking and smiles. It felt like they were in their own little world as the people and time flowed around them. Among other things, they discussed how big their venue was, a drama Minhyuk was watching and that Kihyun had watched in the past, and when they would do their next cook cook. They often poked fun at each other on and off camera, but it was all in fun, and an essential part of their friendship, which had only grown stronger since debut.
Before long, the food was gone, their bellies were full, and after throwing their trash away, they set off for the hotel again, walking side by side. By now, Kihyun was all but used to having to quicken his strides to match his best friend’s, and so it was nothing at all.
Well--at least, until suddenly the pain in Kihyun's side that he’d tried to push out of his head for the last two or so weeks flared up with a vengeance. The moment it did, his head got light and foggy, and he slumped forward. He thought he would come crashing to the hard pavement, but then a warm, slender body was there to catch him. A panicked Kihyun-ah!-- came to his ears from somewhere far away. He was faintly aware of being half-pulled, half-carried sideways. Gentle but shaking hands guided him down to sit on the sidewalk. Now there was a brick wall against his back, and he let his head loll against it.
As Kihyun’s vision cleared, Minhyuk’s face floated into sight again; the older boy’s brows were knit together with concern. He had Ki’s small hand in his large ones and was holding it tightly, like a lifeline. An unwanted blush crept across Kihyun’s cheeks and he averted his eyes as he pulled himself together.
“Are you okay, Kihyun-ah?” Minhyukie’s voice was gentle, even though he was obviously trying and failing to keep the concern out of it. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s nothing, Min...I’m fine. Just a little bit of--of pain, that’s all.”
“To steal a line that you used on me once, Yoo Kihyun, don’t lie to me.” The younger man knew he was right and nearly crumpled then and there. His eyes brimmed with tears as he bit his lip and lifted his hand to his side. Another warm touch joined it a couple of seconds later, and the older boy asked, earnestly, “I noticed that you wince in choreo rehearsals. Is this why?”
“Yeah...it’s been there for a while and g-got really bad all of a sudden just now. I’ve been trying to ignore it…”
“You should have told us.”
Nobody could argue with Minhyuk in this moment; there was no trace of humor in his tone, only seriousness. He clicked his tongue, and when Kihyun glanced back over, a slight frown tinged his lips. Loving concern flashed behind the visual’s eyes, but he also looked a little flabbergasted and terrified. At this Kihyun felt himself shiver. A hot, wet drop slipped down his face, and he protested, “But I can’t afford to slow down, Minhyuk-ah. I can’t. The tour is so important to us and I don’t want to let you guys down, or let Monbebes down…”
“You need to put your own health first, though. Yes, Monbebes will miss you on a concert date and we will miss you too, but you shouldn’t risk your health in the future for doing things in the present.”
Kihyun shook his head. “I know, but we only have one American concert left...and I’ve never missed a stage in our four years as Monsta X.”
There was silence for a long moment as Minhyuk mulled this over in his head. He clenched his jaw and relaxed it a few times before finally continuing slowly, “Would you at least go to the hospital and get checked out? I'll be with you the whole time, I promise.”
As much as Kihyun didn’t like that idea, he couldn’t deny that he owed Minhyukie that. Also, his conscience nagged at him, and so he nodded a little.
“Alright, well...do you think you can walk the rest of the way back?”
“Yeah.”
The ghost of a smile returned to his Minhyuk’s face, and climbing to his feet, he reached out to help his friend up. A flash of gratitude went through Kihyun when he realized that the older man had offered his off-hand so Kihyun wouldn't have to use the arm on his wounded side as much. He pulled himself up, doing his best to not make his pain worse. Then, with their hands clasped, fingers intertwined, he and Minhyuk made their way to the hotel at a slower pace.
Minhyuk kept his word faithfully. He was the one who knocked on their manager's door and explained the situation; as they climbed into the car and drove to the hospital, he was still right at Kihyun's side. The gentle pressure of their interlaced fingers kept the younger man grounded the whole way. His eyes welled up with tears as the nurse who admitted them to the emergency room ran her fingers over the giant black, yellow, and purple bruise on Kihyun’s side. He'd been hiding it, so it was strange to let someone else see, but his best friend's presence made things better. During the X-ray, Minhyuk couldn’t be in the room, but he promised Kihyun he’d be sitting right outside. Almost the moment the main vocal emerged, he was back by the bedside, and their hands found each others' again. To anyone else, these might seem like little things, but for Kihyun, it was everything. He was nervous about being in the hospital anyway; having someone by his side that was as close as a brother was a Godsend.
Sitting in the emergency room cubicle, waiting for the diagnosis, Kihyun sighed and bit the inside of his cheek. “I’m nervous.”
“I know.” One of Minhyuk’s signature smiles spread across his face, and he set a hand on Kihyun’s thigh. “You’re okay. It'll turn out alright, you'll see.”
A tight, breathless feeling overwhelmed Kihyun as he looked at his best friend, and all at once, hot tears were threatening to fall. He didn’t think he’d ever been more thankful for something than he was for that sunny grin at that moment. “Thank you, Minhyuk-ah.”
“Anything for my best friend.”
If Kihyun had been in better condition, he would have reached out and smacked the older boy. “Oh, shut up," he giggled; it hurt a little, but he could bear the pain.
“I’m serious though.” Despite Min’s sparkling eyes, it was obvious that again, he was telling the truth. "You're one of my closest friends, Kihyun, and don't ever forget it, okay?"
Just then, the doctor and their manager entered, and attention shifted to the former as he began to speak. The three Koreans in the room weren't fluent in English, but they had no trouble understanding what the man in the white coat was saying. The x-rays showed clearly that Kihyun had a fractured rib. The idea was terrifying, but it totally explained the pain he had been experiencing. "You're lucky that you didn't make it worse especially considering you put strain on your body on a frequent basis. Not to mention, there's the added stress of not being at home. Right now, the thing you need most is rest."
Of course, when the physician inquired if they had any questions, Kihyun had to ask about the concert. He wanted to take part no matter what. Even though the doctor cautioned that it would be best if he didn’t and took it easy, that fire of determination still burned brightly within him. This was a longtime dream, and there was no way in hell he was missing it. Someone would have to tie him up or down to keep him from going on that stage. They would have a hell of a fight on their hands, too.
From the way Minhyuk reached up to squeeze Kihyun's knee, the older boy also must have known what was going through his head. He was familiar with the main vocalist's stubborn nature, so Kihyun wasn't all too shocked at that. The slight frown on Min's face also revealed that he probably had a few choice words to say about it too. However, he kept quiet, maybe waiting for a more opportune time.
Because the hospital staff didn’t think it was necessary for them to stay overnight, in the end they found themselves back at the hotel. On the way, they picked up a prescription for some strong painkillers. Kihyun was already plotting how they would be his saving grace at the concert. That thought could wait until later, though. For now, he focused on keeping his heavy eyelids open long enough to get himself to bed. Minhyuk, as always, was right by his side the whole time, keeping a close eye out for him as he did his nightly skincare routine.
Finally, Kihyun was snuggling under the thick duvet of the hotel bed. He expected Minhyuk to say his goodnights and duck out to get some rest too. Instead, he was pleasantly surprised when the mattress dipped with the weight of the other boy sitting on its edge. A gentle caress brushed the hair out of Kihyun's face, and one last time, he dragged his eyes open to see his friend sitting there, smiling softly. "Thank you again," Kihyun murmured, "For everything."
In response, Min nodded wordlessly and leaned over to place a gentle kiss on Kihyun's forehead. It was warm and soft and nice, and the vocalist drifted off into sleep with it imprinted on his memory, as well as the gentle pressure of a large palm rubbing his back.

AAS combines intelligent design with innovative technologies to give gamers what they want: an ultra-slim laptop that runs cooler and quieter without sacrificing performance. When the laptop is opened, a portion of the bottom flexes to create 20% more open space for air circulation. Along with our unique AeroAccelerator technology, this gap improves airflow by 40% and reduces temperatures by 20% compared to conventional cooling. You can game for hours on end with impeccable stability and no throttling. ROG Zephyrus offers the highest level of performance in the smallest chassis. Breath Deeply AAS incorporates a unique AeroAccelerator (AA) technology that increases the speed and efficiency of airflow through the laptop. It starts with the carefully shaped aluminum alloy shroud around the intake, which has curved edges and raised guides that channel more cool air into the fan. The fan blades are made of a special liquid crystal polymer that lets us reduce the thickness by 33% compared to traditional designs. We can add more blades as a result, improving airflow through the fan by 26%. Cool air passes over heatsink fins just 0.1 mm thick - half the thickness of typical fins. The thinner profile reduces air resistance while letting us squeeze in more fins to increase the surface area for better heat dissipation. Make Your Keyboard Unique With Aura RGB ROG Zephyrus' keyboard is positioned at the front of the chassis to allow better cooling for the internal components and offer a more comfortable, familiar position for gamers accustomed to desktop keyboards. Aura RGB lighting lets you customize colors and dynamic effects for the entire keyboard, and you can adjust the QWER and WASD clusters separately to adapt to MOBA, FPS, and other games. Anti-ghosting tech ensures your commands are interpreted instantly and correctly - even if you hit up to 30 keys simultaneously. Importance of thermal temperature camera beyond Covid
A thermal camera installed within the vicinity of a corporate building indicates that the business owners/leaders are aware of the body temperatures of the persons entering the building. This has been long since used for the purpose of security and check. Especially in corporate buildings where there's a small to large number of employees, a huge amount of data records stored, and high profile meetings etc taking place within that area range. In this case it is both a precautionary measure and an active security measure to make sure there’s a record check of every person going in and out of the premises.
Thermal imaging camera helps gauge the body temperature of every entrant, which is helpful for the company in many cases. Thermal temperature scanner was already famous among top companies as mentioned before for security reasons. And thermal screening being used for security reasons is not a new thing, covid might have paced up the sales for thermal screening equipment  and helped increase awareness about the device and system, but it was not necessarily made an appearance after the pandemic. Although if you speak about the pros of the device and a system installed for it many companies have installed it to take a step towards taking preventive measures to contain the virus.
Companies are around to help you find the right device and camera/scanner for your business and buildings of importance but you have to choose a good enough option for yourself.
Alpha data
is one such company that is one of the top network and other types of security options company in the middle east. Dubai, Abu Dhabi etc are just some of the parts it covers in its UAE range to serve the market. It provides several options and a promise for a safer environment for your business and your employees, minimizing person to person contact and amnual operations to detect temperature.

15 ways air travel might be different in the future, from immunity passports to blood tests, Business Insider
[ad_1]

Airplane interiors might look different in the future.

Travel has essentially come to a standstill: The TSA reported 90% fewer passengers in the air than this time last year because of the coronavirus.
Airlines and airports are rethinking their health and safety regulations in order to get travelers flying again.
As is already the norm in many places, face coverings will likely become mandatory on flights.
Some experts predict the emergence of a social distance-friendly class, an in-flight janitor, and a document to prove immunity.
Visit Insider’s homepage for more stories.
While the coronavirus pandemic has all but devastated the travel industry, most experts agree that travel will rebound – it’s just a question of when.
It’s also a matter of how, as some experts predict a second, and even third wave of the coronavirus to hit, and don’t expect a return to relative normalcy until 2021.
Airlines are scrambling to get travelers flying again, and both airlines and airports are rethinking their safety and health regulations to earn passenger’s trust and avoid the virus’ spread.
A report by airline strategy firm SimpliFlying predicts a whopping 70 ways in which air travel might be different post-pandemic. “In total, over 70 different areas in the passenger journey are expected to either change or to be introduced from scratch to restore confidence in flying after COVID-19,” the report states.
Keep scrolling to see some of the most recent new procedures, as well as some potential future policies.
You might be required to take a blood test or nasal swab ahead of a flight, or upon arrival.

Emirates began administering COVID-19 blood tests to passengers departing from its hub in Dubai in April. The tests gave results within 10 minutes. While the test is not yet available for widespread use, Adel Al Redha, the airline’s chief operating officer, said in a statement that they are hoping to “scale up testing capabilities in the future.”
Hong Kong recently introduced mandatory COVID-19 testing for all arrivals, making it the first airport to do so, and Japan’s Tokyo Narita Airport requires testing for passengers arriving from high-risk countries such as Italy or the US, though results are said to take up to two days.
Temperature checks might become the norm.
Air Canada was the first North American airline to say it will introduce mandatory temperature checks ahead of flights. This comes as part of its new CleanCare+ program, which will go into effect on May 15, and will also include a required health questionnaire, and an amenity kit complete with hand sanitizer.
CEO Calin Rovinescu said in a statement: “We have been a leader in progressively introducing new measures in response to COVID-19, such as introducing personal protective equipment for our employees and being the first North American carrier to require face coverings for customers. We are now the first airline in the Americas to administer pre-flight temperature checks system-wide.”
Frontier Airlines followed suit, saying that it will require pre-boarding temperature checks for all passengers starting June 1, and London’s Heathrow Airport also said it will begin experimenting with widespread temperature checks.
Etihad is trialing kiosks in Abu Dhabi that will monitor passengers’ health, and in Puerto Rico, thermal-imaging cameras will sound an alarm should anyone with a temperature higher than 100.3 degrees pass through Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan.
In the US, there is debate as to whether the TSA should start making temperature checks on passengers and employees mandatory. Airlines for America, a trade group that represents American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Southwest, spoke out in favor of these checks.
However, as Business Insider’s Aylin Woodward points out, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease says that between 25% and 50% of people who have contracted the virus are asymptomatic. That notwithstanding, even those who don’t show any symptoms can pass the illness on to others, so the effectiveness of temperature checks remains somewhat unclear.
You’ll probably have to cover your face throughout flights.
Since masks have become mandatory in public in many places, it comes as no surprise that most airlines are also making wearing them compulsory for passengers. In fact, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) recommends mandatory face coverings for both passengers and crew.
Forget crowded lines — you could start getting texts telling you it’s time to board.

Heathrow’s chief executive John Holland-Kaye said that lines to board planes could be around half a mile long with social distancing measures in place and that airports don’t have enough space to implement this.
The New York Times reports that to combat crowded lines, “cellphone location data may cue your arrival to an airport, which can then check you in curbside and move you on to a security tunnel in which passengers continue moving – sci-fi style – as they are screened by TSA and health authorities.”
According to The Daily Mail, passengers may receive text messages when it’s their time to board, thereby eliminating the need to stand in line.
Flying could get more expensive.

While some experts predict lower fares as airlines try to entice flyers, a press release by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) anticipates fares rising by up to 54% in some places due to social-distancing measures with fewer seats available to sell. According to the IATA, social-distancing measures would reduce planes’ maximum load factors to 62%, when most airlines need their planes to be 77% full to break even.
Airplane design could fundamentally change.

Avio Interiors
Italian design firm Avio Interiors put forward renderings that posit a potential solution for keeping flights full while minimizing passengers’ exposure to each other. Its “Janus” design reverses the middle seat in each row of three, and includes transparent dividers that shield passengers from one another.
Instead of redesigning plane interiors entirely, Florian Barjot, an aeronautical engineer from France, created “PlanBay,” a removable shield that can be placed on middle seats that protect passengers both from behind and from neighboring seats.
A social distance-friendly class may emerge.

Emirates Airlines
Ross Dawson, author and futurist, previously told Insider that he believes that people will be “highly sensitized to the risk of a pandemic,” and foresees airlines having to step up their precautions, including possibly offering various degrees of distance between people. He even predicts the rise of a new kind of plane class that he somewhat jokingly refers to as an “isolation class,” which could be anything from seats with dividers between them to small rooms as we have seen in some airlines’ first-class cabins.
While short-lived, we’ve already seen the idea of paying extra for social distance when Frontier said it would begin charging $39 for a guaranteed empty seat next to your own. However, the initiative was dropped only days after being announced after drawing considerable criticism.
Full body disinfection booths could become commonplace, maybe even cleaning robots.

Hong Kong International Airport is already testing booths that are said to disinfect people from head to toe in 40 seconds thanks to an antimicrobial spray, as well as cleaning robots that use an ultraviolet light sterilizer as well as an air sterilizer to disinfect public spaces.
Bags may need to get sanitized separately.
caption
“Sanitagging” might become a thing.

Valerie Macon/Getty
SimpliFlying foresees luggage going through its own fogging or UV disinfection process prior to being loaded onto planes, which it dubs “sanitagging.”
Both terminals and plane cabins could become contactless.

Touchpoints will be reduced as much as possible.
source
Wolfgang Rattay/Ruters
In an effort to minimize touchpoints, SimpliFlying predicts that seat-back pockets, which they say have been found to be the second-most contaminated spots on planes, will be left empty, or could be removed entirely.
Touchscreen entertainment systems may be replaced with various ways to use your own devices to enjoy in-flight entertainment.
“To replace the in-flight entertainment system, airlines might just ensure that a USB and power-outlets are available at every seat and that some form of device holder or stand is available,” the report suggests.
At airport terminals, SimpliFlying sees a rise in touchless kiosks (similar to those being trialed by Etihad in Abu Dhabi) that can both check passengers in and test their health, or a fully biometric check-in and immigration process based on facial recognition, which is already widespread at terminals with international routes.
Hot meals may be a thing of the past.
caption
In-flight food and drinks have widely been cut to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
source
Edward Wang/Reuters
Many airlines are currently either cutting food service entirely or switching to cold and pre-packaged meals. Instead of getting cups of water refilled, passengers will get their own bottle at the beginning of every flight to decrease touchpoints, according to SimpliFlying, which also suggests that passengers may begin buying their meals at touchless vending machines pre-flight.
In-flight janitors might become part of cabin crews.
caption
There might be people onboard flights dedicated to keeping “high-touch” areas clean.

SimpliFlying brings up the possibility of in-flight janitors whose job will entail regularly cleaning the lavatories and any other “high-touch” areas during flights.
Plexiglass shields might become ubiquitous.
caption
Plexiglass shields will probably be everywhere.
source
Oli Scarff/AFP/Getty
Plexiglass shields between customer-facing airport employees and passengers have been recommended by the US Travel Association. These could become the norm everywhere, from check-in desks to shops and eateries.
You might need to show ID, as well as some sort of immunity document or health certificate.
caption
Some countries already have passports detailing vaccination records.
source
Juan Mabromata /Getty
Thailand is already requiring passengers flying in from certain countries to present health certificates that deem them COVID-19-free before they can board flights to the country, and the IATA has suggested something similar, proposing an “immunity passport.” SimpliFlying compares these to the Yellow Fever cards passengers must show ahead of traveling to certain regions.
You may have to get to the airport even earlier.
caption
People may be required to show up four hours prior to departure.
source
Reuters
As both bags and people may need to get sanitized, and health checks become the new normal, the process of checking in and boarding might start taking longer. “People may be required to show up four hours prior to departure depending on the specific airlines, airports, and procedures,” SimpliFlying predicts, adding that families with children and the elderly will likely be most inconvenienced, and that this may prompt business travelers to drive or take the train instead.

Emirates Is Spending $15.1 Billion on Boeing Airplanes
Emirati visitors walk past a Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner during the opening day of the Dubai Air Show, United Arab Emirates, November 12, 2017. Long-haul carrier Emirates purchased 40 American-made Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners on Sunday at the start of the biennial Dubai Air Show, a $15.1 billion deal certain to please U.S. President Donald Trump who has touted the plane’s sales as a job creator in America.
The deal appeared to surprise Boeing’s archrival Airbus, whose staff had attended a long-delayed news conference and left the room just moments before the announcement.
Airbus has pinned hopes of continuing production of its double-decker jumbo jet on Emirates, the world’s largest operator of the aircraft which took delivery of its 100th A380 earlier this month. Reports circulated before the air show that a major A380 sale would be coming.
But instead, Emirates CEO and Chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum explained how the airline considered the Airbus A350 and decided to pick the Boeing 787-10.
“We were comparing the two apples,” he said, but found that the Boeing 787 is “the best option” for Emirates “given its maintenance and so on.”
It’s the second time Airbus has lost out on selling the A350 to Emirates. In June 2014, the state-owned Emirates cancelled an order for 70 A350s after a “fleet requirement” review.
The Boeing 787-10 typically lists for $312.8 million. Delivery will begin in 2022.
Chicago-based Boeing Co. already has 171 787-10s on order. Among those waiting for the aircraft are Abu Dhabi-based Etihad.
The twin-engine 787-10, however, has been a focus of Trump since he came into office. In February, he visited the Boeing plant in North Charleston, South Carolina, which manufactures the carbon-fiber, 330-seat plane Trump described as “an amazing piece of art.”
“As your president I’m going to do everything I can to unleash the power of the American spirit and to put our great people back to work,” Trump said at the time. “This is our mantra: Buy American and hire American.”
Sheikh Ahmed made a point to say the deal will help create more jobs, echoing Trump’s mantra. The deal was signed in the presence of Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who also serves as the United Arab Emirates’ prime minister and vice president.
“The order will take Emirates’ total (number of) wide body aircraft of the Boeing to 204 aircrafts, units worth over $90 billion,” Sheikh Ahmed said. “This is a long-term commitment that supports hundreds of thousands of jobs, not only at Boeing but also throughout the aviation supply chain.”
Trump and the White House made no immediate comment on the sale amid the president’s trip to the Philippines on Sunday.
Emirates’ business has suffered under Trump’s travel bans affecting predominantly Muslim nations, as well as the recent ban on laptops in airplane cabins. Emirates said it slashed 20 percent of its flights to the U.S. in the wake of the restrictions, though Dubai International Airport remains the world’s busiest international travel hub.
Emirates now relies solely on the Airbus 380 and the Boeing 777 for its flights, making it the largest operator of both. It now has 165 Boeing 777s in its fleet today.
Last week, the U.S. plane manufacturer secured an order valued at more than $37 billion at list price for 300 of its single-aisle and double-aisle planes during Trump’s visit to China. Trump also was present for the signing ceremony last month between Boeing and Singapore Airlines for 39 new aircraft, including 19 of the 787 Dreamliner, in a deal worth up to $14 billion.
While a big sale, the Dubai Air Show opened Sunday on what seemed to be a quieter note. The only other major sale for airplane manufacturers involved Azerbaijan Airlines, which will buy five Boeing 787-8s, two other freighter aircraft and landing gear maintenance from it for some $1.9 billion. The UAE’s Defense Ministry signed a $1.6 billion deal with Lockheed Martin to upgrade dozens of its F-16 fighters.
It’s a far cry from 2013, when airlines made $140 billion in new orders before the collapse of global oil prices. Prices have rebounded recently to around $60 a barrel.
Other airlines than Emirates are taking part, but missing from the trade show this year is one of the region’s largest long-haul carriers, Qatar Airways, amid a diplomatic fallout between Qatar and four Arab nations. Qatar Airways previously had played a big role in the Dubai Air Show, reserving a large pavilion and displaying its latest aircraft to visitors.
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain cut ties with Qatar in June over its ties with Iran and its support of Islamist groups, accusing the small Gulf state of supporting extremists, charges it denies. The Arab quartet cut direct flights with Qatar and closed their airspace to Qatari aircraft.
Meanwhile, Emirates unveiled new, state-of-the-art, first class private suites.
In an industry first, passenger suites in the middle aisle without windows will be fitted with “virtual windows” relaying the sky outside via fiber optic cameras on the plane. There’s also a video call feature in the suites that connects passengers to the cabin crew, as well as temperature control and various mood lighting settings.
Emirates President Tim Clark declined to say how much a ticket in the 40 square-foot (3.7-square-meter) private suite will cost. The private suites will be available on the airline’s Boeing 777.
