BO!!!!! ok you wanna read what i've got so far?? it's not very much but here's what i have for my project that's tentatively titled "permafrost"

At first, it comes as a series of lights in the distance, a gentle rain like a cascade of falling stars. And then, it goes dark.

It happens over the course of several hours. By the time the dust settles—and it never settles, never really settles, always hangs in the air and renders it unbreathable, unlivable—and the sirens quiet and the last few screams die off, there’s hardly anything left. Hardly anything left living. 

The initial blast doesn’t reach up the country and, for that, Johnny lasts the months after the first nuclear bombs are dropped. Somedays, he can barely recollect the hours after the initial impact; they come back in foggy chunks, stumbling out of his house, boots crunching over the glass that had been blown clean out of the windows, covering his eyes against the flash of light and staring out into the distance at the mushrooming cloud of smoke just cresting the horizon. The bottom falling out of him at the sight.

More bombs hit other parts of the continent, several in Russia, throughout Asia and down into Africa, and across the pond as well. The world goes up in flames in an hour. In his cabin up in the Scottish Highlands, crutches jammed under his arms in his haste to limp his way outside, he sees the blast and then hears it a minute or so later. A roar rippling through the air. 

It shatters the world. 

In the present day, the boat sways where it’s roped to the wharf, the waters choppy. Johnny sits on the deck in a foldout chair, fastening a new head onto his ax, fixing the metal wedge over the eye to hold it in place. The blade is cleaner than the one that’d just cracked, sharp from being run over the whetstone. He pulls his scarf back over his nose when it slips down his face.

His cabin in the Highlands hadn’t been a viable choice for longer than a few months, not after the cold had finally begun to set in. Too far up north. He’d made his way down south over the course of weeks, bringing with him only as much as he could carry. A bittersweet goodbye to the summer home of his youth, a hand laid flat against the door before turning on his heel and starting the long trek south.

It’s not any warmer farther down south, particularly around the coast where the wind gets bitterly cold, sinking into the bone. He’d found the boat on a whim, the only structure still relatively intact and, most importantly, isolated.

Making his home on an old boat might not win him any awards for brightest idea, but the downside to traveling further into the country, away from the untenable glacial weather up north, is that it coincides with the areas where the bombs were dropped, leaving limited options for shelter.

Months pass. Years pass. 

His ankle healed funny all those years ago from prolonged bouts of starvation before desperation kicked in and from traveling miles on foot. He’d driven a portion of the way down north until the roads had outlived their usefulness—asphalt cracked, chunks of bedrock spiking up out of the ground. The rest he’d managed with his crutches and a single backpack, leaving the car to rot some three hundred or so miles up the country.

It's some strange occurrence, Johnny thinks at age thirty-something (he’s lost count), that his lot be murky, for death to miscount. He witnesses an apocalypse and comes out the other side. Happenstance. Coincidence, that he’s discharged from the military not a month before the first bomb hits London and leaves a crater that never fills, that never heals. A pockmark in the earth. 

His lips twist bitterly. The price of a long life is a barbed and slick soul. 

​​Immortality sometimes occurs to him, or godship, but neither option rests well with him and Johnny wonders if this is how gods are born: not of sea foam but of inevitability, of miscalculation, of death's err, of smallness, of acorns he carried as a child through pastures behind his summer house.

He sniffs. Cuts that memory off at the quick.

Johnny gives himself a couple more minutes to fiddle around with the ax before looping it into the gear loops on his backpack and buckling it in.

When was the last time you went outside? Earlier this evening to greet and feed the stray cat we fondly call dada cat :) We've pretty much claimed him now the same way he's claimed us. I'm more than willing to keep buying him cat food if it means he gets to eat something for the day.

Do you get nervous speaking to people you don’t know on the phone? I do, it's why I never opt for calls. If someone calls me without a heads-up, I automatically reject it. If they do give me a notice beforehand, I usually come up with a 'reason' for my unavailability.

Do you have a passport? What’s the picture like? I do. My picture isn't the best there but I hardly care. The important thing is that I never lose it the passport lmao

Have you ever watched a foreign film without the subtitles? No, that wouldn't make no sense. How would I even understand the movie...?

Do you watch movies based on the actors or the movie plot? I usually stay for the plot. Like I have my favorite actors, of course, but it doesn't necessarily mean I'd watch everything they put out.

Do you have trouble falling asleep at night? Only if I'm trying to sleep earlier than I usually do - like at 9 PM.

I had a really bad headache that was basically an awful mix of feeling hungry + being in traffic for 1.5 hours + the car being too cold if you point the aircon at you yet too hot if you point it away + my driver being a bit of a maniac on the road.

Are you hungry? Craving any food in particular? Not anymore-ish. I was super hungry but the only thing in the area where I was earlier was an Sbarro...so even though I wanted (and needed) a meal with rice, I had to make do with pizza which tasted just fine + pasta that tasted like nothing. It did the job filling me but like I wasn't satisfied taste-wise.

Anything on your mind atm? I actually have to review a deck tonight but idk if I'm feeling up to it or if I'll just leave it for tomorrow.

What is one thing that the Titantic has taught you? That I'd totally either die with my pets, or give up my life for them.

I wouldn't change the one I have now; I feel like it's cryptic/lowkey enough in a way that celebrities usually like to make theirs. I'd probably add some sort of symbol though, like a smiley face or heart just to make it cute too heheh.

Briar tensed for a moment at the sound of Mermaid behind them. Looking around slowly, she glanced down and noticed a yellow dog with the shiniest coat of fur; they were very well loved. Delicately, and very carefully, Briar lowers her hand towards the dog's nose who gives an eager sniff and a soft lick in return.

The boat rocked again, and Briar quickly took a step forward to balance themselves. Mermaid didn't seem to mind and merely continued to hold eye contact.

Briar feels some very conflicting emotions right now. This dog is...... so sweet? No jumping? Have a little gentle lick?? Still interested in saying hello? No panic at sudden motions? The gentle little lick... 🥺 Briar reached out again and gave two very gentle pets with her fingertips. As she pulled away, Mermaid strained her head to get more pets but only tapped their feet anxiously instead of chasing the hand.

"... That's fine. She seems very.... Well behaved" they gave a small smile of assurance before looking back at Finn. You could tell she was still hesitant but Mermaid was clearly a force of great power.

"So is this your boat? Or a communal boat?" Maybe a navy boat? Boats are weird. Boat boat. The answer may reflect on how far they would sail out (boat out?)

When she comes back eagerly, finn orders “RAMP” with a hand signal and the dog pulls a rope connected to the pulley and puts the ramp back up as well. Such a smart girl

Finn does confirm that this boat is actually his and his brothers home. A boat house! It makes sense as it seems much cleaner than most boats around, and the deck is very cozy. He leads her to a chair bolted down so she can catch her bearings as she gets used to the rocking ocean

Wait! What happened to the last 7 months!? Lots, but that is all carefully writtten as a draft on a piece of paper, which is hiding.

So,taking up from my happy return in April. home seemed very quiet. That,s what i forget about Lasqueti, it,s just the sound of nature, with the occasional vehicle clanking down the rotten road. Like mine!

Having spent a month banging pipes into the rotten frame of the Willy truck(it was free!) , which ran last fall, I tried to start it this Spring, but the fuel pump had died. So i cut out the truck deck, only to discover that the pump had no power. Guided by my buddy Sam, testing proved that it was indeed non functional. Then sam revealed that the trucks brakes were bad and the clutch failing. 3 strikes/out! Now it,s a parts truck, and needed as the fuel injectors on the original Mazda were clogged. N,o amount of injector cleaner helped, but by acclerating wildly in 1st, i got the fourth cylinder to cu t in.

Hmmm, parts truck! I,d never seen a fuel injector, much less changed them, but with Sams patient help and by removing an exceptional number of bolts, the injectors were revealed. Cleaned with solvent, blown out with flaky turkey baster invention, reinstalled... no change. Was it the plugs? the wires? Me? Sam said ..lets transplant the Willy injectors into the reluctant mazda. More hidden bolts, another unsuccesful try and finally with the suspect injectors discarded, triumph! Still rough, surely no resale value, but it goes! And ran all summer. Mostly I rode my old motorcycle, saving on gas, which ran out on the island when the barge got diverted. I had squirreld a few cans away, so kept rolling.

After last years wireworm plague I moved my garden to Waynes field.Real dirt! 3 inch firepump watering, fast! 60 foot rows of potatoes, beets, carrots, beans, broccoli, squash and a selection of winter vegetables. Wish I could say it was great, but the coast had very mixed weather, alternating hot cold spells, drought and rain, and none of them in the correct order to encourage the growth. 100 buckets of seaweed for fertilizer and mulch. tilled with the dying Honda to remove weeds, and had a bumper crop of volunteer kale. I ate kale as a survival food back when I was broke, not so tasty now. Zuchini was slow, so you know its bad. Deer and sheep pushed the fish net fences at home, sucking the leaves off the thornless blackberrys, and even weaseled under a corner to top the kale, twice! I did a lot of fence fixing! A BB pistol kept the deer moving( no harm , but it startles them!). What was very productive was apples. My 12 trees yielded 1000 pounds! Canned as sauce, dried , and juiced Got up to drinking a litre of fresh juice daily. I gave away 500 pounds and the sheep and deer shared the rest with me.

Old friends came to visit, Arn for Arts fest, Kevin Eleven for a birthday party, and the kids for the Firemans picnic.It,s fun having guests! I had a house guest for 5 weeks too.

My tenant in the old dome home had a baby with his bi polar wife. His friend sent her Mom from Singapore to help with the baby and housework. Gina, recently retired from a career as an accountant was living in their tiny home and all was well till the bi polar wife hit tilt and had a screaming meltdown Gina fled to my house where i welcomed her in to stay in my guest room. Must say I enjoyed the Chinese cooking, intelligent company, and explaining the island life with it,s attendant processes. Big jump from Singapore to the woods! Gina left to travel on but will return in April for another visit.

Having a boat shaped hole in my head, I bought a catalina 27 from my friend Rosalind, who bought it on impulse and realized it needed much work while she already had a 30 foot life boat restoration on the go. Together we fixed the essentials, like running motor, bilge pumps, etc. The season timed out before we even took a test sail so I paid for the boat and left it moored out on her shore line in long Bay No leaks, good spot, might be there in the Spring! I,ve missed sailing a lot, and the Lasqueti ferry was over crowded all summer, so having transport and a freight boat (Gas ,food, people) will be great.

The rainy season came early, monsoon downpours, 3 inches in a day, 7 inches over a week, cold and soggy. I harvested my puny plants, transferred the overflowing catchment tanks to the uphill storage, and winterized the house Already the grey, short, cold days were affecting my mood. I hate winter on the coast, 7 months of blah! Burned a lot of firewood, which dries the house, makes hot water, and also dries apples and laundry. LED lights are easy on electricity, so my old second hand batteries, managed. New ones in the spring along with more panels and a freezer at home. As inflation eats away the buying power of my savings, I,m putting the capital into hard goods, like batterys, sailboats and maybe a newer truck.
