Realm of Living silliness
Tumblr media
One thing that always intrigued me about Bleach was how it's modern world was quite literally just ours. Any history lesson, myth, or religion you can think of is there.
Ichigo lives in a mirror of our Earth in a mirror of Japan.
You even see how this could cause unintentional humor at times. One such example is from one of the novels which depicts Ginjo arriving in the Soul Society not long after Ichigo killed him.
He comes across a religious group losing their shit because it's not heaven. They assume their new reality is the "devil's work". It just shows how little of their reality the living humans truly understand in Bleach.
Tumblr media
There's also these weird time discrepancies between what would be in Earth's archeological record vs what the Soul Society's history is.
Granted, those that run the Soul Society are shady as hell and rewrite history often but that doesn't make everything a lie either. At times they'll reference how something took place thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands, if not millions of years prior.
The recent anime shows that in relation to the Reiō (Soul King) and his ambiguous history. If he truly reshaped his primordial world of chaos into the three current worlds that far back then what of the inhabitants?
Were their only spirits in the original world? Were "the people" a mix of spirit and matter? At what point did the reincarnation cycle cause humans to appear or evolve on Earth despite spiritual beings having humanoid forms since before the world was shaped?
Tumblr media
Hell, it's also possible that the world as humans know it is a lie just as portions of history as the Soul Society knows it is a lie.
Often the rewrites are done to hide some scandal but at times they're also done to bury something world ending. The nature of the Soul King is one in of itself because he holds reality together just by existing.
Knowing the mechanics can allow you to make a "new soul king" or just outright kill the original depending on your intent. Both things are actually attempted between Yhwach's war on the Shinigami and the events of "Can't Fear Your Own World".
So knowing that leads to wonder just how much of the living world as people know it is even fact. Compared to a spirit a human lives barely a blink of an eye making any alterations easy to pull off.
Tumblr media
And no, I have no end point or bigger point to make with all of this. These are just random things I wonder about with Bleach's world. It makes it's setting of modern Japan a bit more unique than most because I want to know how it fits into the grander spiritual setting.
There's also plenty of mysteries about the Soul Society that's too big to ever cover in a tumblr post.
Either way, I hope I piqued your curiosity. And remember, within Bleach's world it's a fact that Hell exists but Heaven does not.
Think about that one, bye~

I read online somewhere that Kubo didn't intend for Mayuri to survive to the end of Bleach and that he and Ishida were meant to have more fights before Ishida ultimately killed him. I can't help but wonder when that changed.
I would believe that, since Kubo went out of his way to have Mayuri rescue Uryu in Hueco Mundo (which comes off weird af when they interact not at all in TYBW and the interaction itself devolves into comedy salad).
Mayuri against Giselle is also so weak outside of them just being fun characters to see interact. I don’t buy Mayuri as being any less horrible than Giselle (despite Kubo’s lame cock sniffing efforts and trying to show Giselle as a Worse SS Arc Mayuri). The efforts to make him seem admirable fail unless your definition is just ‘wow how great he didn’t wanna see the world end’.
Not sure when it changed exactly, but it’s clear there was a shift towards the end of the fullbringer arc. The shinigami come in. They save Ichigo. They’re our final allies and lens for the upcoming TYBW. We are no longer giving a shit about the culpability of Gotei 13. They now have the ultimate right: either you support them or you support destroying the world. (This happened to a lesser extent when Mayuri saved Uryu and no confrontation happened.)
Ginjo’s ire was diminished to ‘isn’t it fucked up they’ve been listening to you’ RIGHT before the shinigami start talk about their intent to kill Ichigo if he showed any waver in faith towards them. The timing of Ichigo’s salvation, too, seems awfully convenient for Yhwach’s timeline (Yamamoto has kept that simmering under his beard for 1000 years, for sure). This wouldn’t be the first time Rukia wanted to save Ichigo and Yamamoto let it happen bc it lined up with an agenda.
To me the end of Uryu vs Mayuri is the end of the Soul Society being viewed as an entity that needs to be changed. Everything about change in the fullbringer arc is fucking lip service. We get three novels of how fucked things still are via CFYOW after the manga.
It makes me wonder if that was something that was fought about internally, since the shinigami are by far the most popular part of Bleach (which makes sense since they were by far the most well introduced and written).
Uryu joining the Sternritter solely as a convoluted plan to kill Yhwach doesn’t work as well imo as him joining because he’s promised a shot at the guy who bragged with photo evidence about torturing and killing his grandfather—the one adult who treated Uryu like he was a person and not a burden after his mother died—as well as Quincy at large. It can not be over stated that Mayuri was not doing this against orders
Uryu has plenty of reason to hate SS and Mayuri in particular and he’s a guy who feels pretty strongly. He likes to have the last line.
The fact that the text refuses to engage with WHY Uryu wouldn’t support the Seireitei is fucking insane. It’s right there!!!! It’s so clear!!!
It’s just weird to me that Kubo shoddily slapping some nazi imagery on the Sternritter really did make ppl go en masse ‘what Quincy genocide’.
Like Seireitei has done everything Yhwach did except try to kill the Soul King (that we know of).
Mayuri vs Uryu would have fucked. Nemu turning into an independent being and having to deal with possibly being ousted from her division now that Mayuri isn’t there to insist she stays/proving she is fully a shinigami would have fucked. Uryu finally returning the favor to a woman who has been codependent her entire life WOULD HAVE FUCKED.
I heavily enjoy seeing what we got in TYBW as far as Mayuri goes because I love him as a character and I’ll take literally anything. But story wise, yeah. Mayuri vs Uryu would have been so cool.

what are ur thoughts on each bleach arc o: like quality wise!
oh boy this got longer than expected. Whoops.
substitute arc: i rlly like this arc! its short but i love how it sets up the characters and i adore the integration between ichigos human life vs shinigami life And i like the monster of the week set up its a fun and its a lot more character focused in the beginning. the fights were very character driven, like with grand fisher, sora, the hollow that went to hell. all the fights felt like they had a meaning that had a strong impact on a character, like ichigo having closure after defeating (he should have killed him tbh) grand fisher.
soul society: one of the best if not the best arcs imo. theres a good amount of development, the fights are good and have emotional weight (ichigo v byakuya, uryu v mayuri, chad v shunsui, yoruichi v soi fon) and the newly introduced characters are interesting! very iconic and cool! there was a lot of character arc conclusions? Closure? like with uryu and yoruichi as well as rukia. the characters are a strong point here too and the introduction of soul society brought in world building and it was something we really needed to see. soul society as the villains was pretty good and it did show them as a threat. its a good arc and had a good cliffhanger ending to the next arc
arrancar arc: its a pretty good arc but this is where i feel like bleach was starting to fall off in quality since kubo didnt plan for the series to go past ss. like the plot was a little repetitive with the rescue arc the placing was pretty bad and its where the kubos problem of having too many characters started forming. there are some pretty good moments though, i really love the ichigo vs grimmjow and ichigo vs ulquiorra fights along with rukia vs aaroniero (rukia development time,,). the arc just felt pretty slow at times ig? But there are some very good moments
fake karakura arc/deicide: i like this arc even though i know half of it was bullshit. there are some good fights, soi fon vs barragan is one of my faves bc her bankai and it was just interesting to see the captains more involved even though i wish they didnt just stand there. like cmon the fate of the world is at stake gang up on ppl u have numbers. i do think its bullshit to have aizen be That powerful (i will excuse the hogyoku use bc thats his trump card and was set up) but having him take down everyone like that was eh. like i know it was meant to show how powerful aizen was but honestly i wish there was a better way. maybe make them all fight amongst each other like with momo but its all mind games and shit i feel like that was a better way of showing how strong aizen was. also speaking of aizen i wish there was more character to him like take away his manipulative badass thing and its just nothing. what drives him to kill the soul king and why? was it loneliness (which is a poor motive tbh), injustice? what brought him on this path? i feel like tousens goals had more to it then aizen tbh
the deicide arc was pretty okay i love mugetsu but im sorry there was absolutely no lead up to him. i love that form but its pretty bullshit that it didnt get as much as a mention in the past and i wish it did bc that would have made mugetsu have a lot more impact. i remember how ppl theorized that it was how isshin lost his powers even though it was proven otherwise but i wish they went with that. but i did like seeing zangetsu again and that touching moment with him and ichigo was good also the rukia and ichigo goodbye was very emotional. was it a good arc? maybe not plot wise but its pretty beloved
fullbringer: oh this is where the quality definitely dropped which sucks because i feel like this arc had a very interesting premise and plot set up. i know that i havent watched/read all of the fb arc but i do know enough of it just not much in between the beginning and end. i wish that the fullbringers had more focus bc they were all forgettable except maybe riruka and they should have had more screentime and the concept of fullbringers is genuinely interesting?? humans with hollow powers is a good concept and its a shame kubo didnt expand upon this more
oh and i have some beef with the villains bc its a fucking tragedy of wasted potential. ginjo is like. almost there to be considered a good villain. hes the previous substitute shinigami and u only bring it up at the end?? thats such a huge chunk of information and it sets up a connection between ichigo and ginjo. idc about tsukishima he can be whatever but i do think ginjo could have been a pretty good villain if he wasnt as blatantly evil. like i know the betrayal schtick is getting old but i would have preferred him as a villain with good intentions, like having him against soul society is a good motive bc ss commits war crimes but it was never clear in this arc (aside from ss monitering the substitutes) but it just didnt feel as strong as a motive to make him do what he did.
one good thing i do have to say about this arc was i do like ichigo in this arc and how much conflict he experiences and we get to see him commit murder although i do wish this had repercussions on him. i feel like soul society’s intervention was unnecessary but thats just me. the fullbringer arc being centered around humans was a good idea, bringing the series back to its roots and i just wish we spent more developmemt with the humans before jumping back to soul society, like more time on the aftermath of the last arc. also this arc should have been the chad arc im dying on this hill.
tybw: wow! this was a trainwreck of an arc! i have. So Many issues with tybw and its where kubos writing weaknesses truly shine. the biggest issues are its pacing which is absolutely abhorrent and it takes up at least a third of the entire series (literally. tybw had 206 chapters out of 686 since tybw officially starts on 480). we had periods where the main cast dont show up for like. 50 chapters. the other biggest problem were the characters. why did kubo think it was a good idea to introduce 26+ characters. why. there is absolutely no time to develop them and while some may receive screentime the majority have no impact to the plot beyond their fights with the characters we actually care about. there is no reason for people to give a shit about them. i can barely remember their names, much less their backstories
and one of the bigger problems was the antagonists themselves. they have a motive and while i understand hatred towards soul society. yhwach’s motives were the worst out of all the villains. i cannot fathom what motivates him because it went fucking everywhere. did he have beef with ss? was he waging war out of self preservation? did he want to end death? like the narrative hints at all of these but it just feels like a mess of a character! i never liked yhwach to begin with since his very concept is awful (seriously? giving a previously thought group of people who experienced genocide a nazi motif? what the fuck kubo). hes a villain but theres no substance. his powers could have been cool but it was on the point of needing a deus ex machina to take him down.
and the fights are forgettable with the occasional good ones (shunsui v that one fuck, rukia v that other fuck) but there are some bad fights (askin v yoruichi, the quincy thor guy). there are some good moments, like all the bankai reveals, it adds more to the characters but it also causes so much jumping around in the plot and this is what happens when u have this many characters and some will be forgotten (so sorry chad). it sucks. some of the fights dragged on longer than necessary and it was just. so much. all of these issues really downgraded the arc and thats what made it the mess it was.
and a lot of the ideas brought in to tybw are criminally underused. ichigo being a quincy may have been wack but i did like the idea but it really only had some sparse moments like masaki and zangetsu development, creating a connection between ichigo and yhwach but that was really it. it was not like his hollow powers which coexisted with the plot and had huge moments and was just a constant presence. you could forget that ichigo was a quincy tbh and we needed more quincy moments. and the soul king was horribly underused because it did have set up from the arrancar arc, it was aizens entire goal! but kubo never really explores the ideas of the soul king and only in cfyow do we really get more info about it and thats no good because the soul king is a vital piece of bleach lore and worldbuilding.
anyways thats my two cents sorry this was rlly long

10 Bleach Fight Scenes That Make the Anime Unforgettable
From the very first episode to the finale, fights were always Bleach's bread and butter. Whether it's the early battles against hollows or the latter fights against Arrancar, Bleach never failed to deliver a memorable showdown. Though both the anime and manga are over, Bleach has a big announcement coming up with its 20th anniversary event next month. To celebrate, we're counting down the top 10 Bleach fights that've stuck with us even after all these years!
**Watch out for spoilers and enjoy the list!**
    10. Ichigo vs. Ginjo
As Bleach’s final battle, you can tell that the staff behind Ichigo vs. Ginjo gave it their all. Featuring some of the best animation in all of Bleach, it’s also a great reintroduction to Ichigo’s power as a Soul Reaper. It’s great to see him back at his former strength (and then some), after spending most of the Fullbring Arc trying to catch up to everyone else and figure out Tsukishima’s plan.
But now, with his powers returned and the other Fullbringers defeated, it’s down to him and Ginjo. Each exchange makes it clearer and clearer that Ichigo is far and away the superior fighter, and our excitement only grows with that realization. The Hell Verse soundtrack that plays during their final exchange is the cherry on top here, adding the perfect epic sound to conclude this fight. Bleach may be over now, but it certainly went out with a bang!
9. Shuhei vs. Findorr
Shuhei Hisagi was always in an odd position among Bleach’s supporting cast. He was always around, but never did much until this point. Here, though, he proves that he’s one of the coolest Lieutenants in the show. The fight starts off solid, if unremarkable compared to Bleach’s best fights, but doesn’t stay that way for long. Once Shuhei’s forced to use his shikai, it turns into nonstop momentum as Findorr tries to dodge Kazeshini and its odd angles of attack.
Kazeshini’s design makes for an interesting fighting style, and it can be hard to tell where Shuhei’s next attack is coming from. Will he use it as a melee weapon, will he throw it again, or will it loop around for another hit after his last attack? For all that he says he doesn’t like Kazeshini’s shape, Shuhei’s clearly mastered its use. He keeps both us and Findor guessing until the final blow, making this one of Bleach’s most dynamic fights.
8. Chad vs. Shunsui
Chad vs. Shunsui can barely be called a fight, but it still deserves a spot on this list for being a perfect example of how to do a one-sided fight. Chad had been built up as one of the stronger fighters in Ichigo’s group, so it’s startling to see him outmatched so quickly.
The fight plays with expectations, first showing Shunsui blocking and evading Chad’s attacks effortlessly, then setting Chad up for a comeback as he reflects on why he’s fighting in the first place. His final attack has all the marks of a finisher: large scale, obvious effort behind it, triumphant music, everything we’ve come to expect. Only, it fails. Shunsui easily avoids it and downs Chad in one blow. The shock of such a sudden ending comes with a realization: sometimes the heroes just aren't strong enough.
7. Kenpachi vs. Nnoitra
Sometimes you want a tactical battle, where each side is trying to outsmart the other. Sometimes you want to see what tricks and special abilities the fighters are concealing as they wait for just the right moment to get the upper hand. And sometimes you just want to see two tough guys hammering each other and refusing to go down. The latter is where Kenpachi vs. Nnoitra comes in. The two of them both specialize in raw power; power that’s on full display here. Even their special moves (Kenpachi’s kendo and Nnoitra’s Santa Teresa) are essentially ways to amplify their already considerable strength.
Simple as that sounds, it makes for quite a thrilling duel. Both of them are so strong that it sometimes feels like the fight comes down to who can endure the most punishment, especially once Kenpachi manages to cut Nnoitra. Part of what makes it so engrossing is how much fun Kenpachi’s having for the entire fight; it’s hard not to get caught up in his joy at facing a challenging enemy. And this isn’t even his best fight!
6. Yoruichi vs. Soi Fon
Though it’s partially overshadowed by Ichigo vs. Byakuya, Yoruichi vs. Soi Fon is a great fight in its own right. Bleach has always excelled at moments of pure cool, which is exactly how this fight starts off. Soi Fon summons a group of her underlings and seems to have the upper hand, only for Yoruichi to defeat all of them in an instant! That immediately sets the tone for the rest of the fight, which becomes a battle of speed between two masters of close combat.
Soi Fon’s Suzumebachi adds to the stakes, making every blow a risk for Yoruichi, as a second hit from Soi Fon means instant death. Bleach fights are typically built around weapons, but this fight proves it can more than handle hand to hand combat as well. With an explosive ending to top it off, Yoruichi vs. Soi Fon truly earns its place here.
5. Ichigo vs. Kenpachi
Ichigo vs. Kenpachi marks the first time we see a Captain really fight (Byakuya defeating Ichigo before doesn’t really count as a fight), and Kenpachi’s the perfect character to demonstrate why these Captains are such a big deal. Seeing even Ichigo overwhelmed by Kenpachi’s spiritual pressure hammers home that this guy is on a completely different level from everyone else Ichigo has gone against before, and that’s even before we see him stop Zangetsu with his bare hands!
Once we see just how strong Kenpachi is, the fight takes on a new dimension. It really feels like Ichigo could die here, and the tension becomes palpable as he realizes that too. It’s only by pairing his power with Zangetsu’s that Ichigo is finally able to make headway, and even then the fight is about as close as a fight can get, ending with both of them on the verge of death with everything around them reduced to rubble. Ichigo vs. Kenpachi shows us what it means to really fight, and it’s a lesson we won’t soon forget.
  4. Ichigo vs. Aizen
Even though Bleach continues on afterwards, Ichigo vs. Aizen has the feel of a final battle. Everyone else is dead or incapacitated, Aizen’s goal is in reach, and Ichigo’s the only one left to stop him. With his Final Getsugatensho training complete and Aizen’s transformation continuing, the stage is set for them to finally clash, and what a fight it is. Their every exchange destroys the surrounding terrain, and even Aizen finally seems to be on the ropes. After so many episodes of Aizen dominating everyone who stands in his way, it’s gratifying to see someone finally outmatch him for once. As Aizen’s finally defeated, this fight marks the end of Bleach’s longest storyline yet, and it’s an end you won’t soon forget.
3. Ichigo vs. Grimmjow
Put simply, Ichigo vs. Grimmjow is the ultimate grudge match. The two had fought twice before, both times with Ichigo only surviving thanks to outside intervention. This time, though, there’s nobody else to interfere, and both of them are free to go all out and settle things. The raw force of Grimmjow’s Resurrección makes it clear that this is a battle for keeps, one that’s going to take everything Ichigo has.
Once the fight kicks off, it’s nonstop momentum as the two engage in a constant back and forth across the ground and air. Watching it is a thrilling experience as each hit seems like it could be lethal, with even the missed attacks destroying large chunks of the surrounding buildings. Ichigo’s finishing blow is the perfect way to end the fight, exciting and triumphant as he finally defeats Grimmjow, his biggest rival since the Arrancar first showed up. Though there are plenty of fights left before Orihime is safe, Ichigo vs. Grimmjow marks a turning point in Hueco Mundo, and is the perfect way to cap off the arc’s first half.
2. Everyone vs. Aizen
We knew Aizen was strong from the moment he revealed his true colors. After all, he was able to stop Ichigo’s bankai with just a finger! But even that didn’t prepare us for what happens when all of the remaining Captains and Vizards tried taking him down in the Fake Karakura Town Arc.
One by one he defeats these powerful fighters without breaking a sweat, all culminating in the moment he takes down Toshiro, Shinji, Shunsui, and Soi Fon in the span of a few seconds. At this point Aizen seems unstoppable, a force of nature that nobody can stand against. Though we know Ichigo is inevitably going to defeat him, at that moment, when he smiles as the Captains fall to the ground, Aizen truly seems invincible.
1. Ichigo vs. Byakuya
Out of all the fights here, Ichigo vs. Byakuya is far and away the most iconic, and for good reason. This is the culmination of everything the Soul Society Arc has been building to ever since Rukia was first taken. The stakes are clear: if Ichigo doesn’t defeat Byakuya, then Rukia’s never going to be safe, and we know that Ichigo is the only one there who can beat him. As the two engage, we learn just how far Ichigo has come, from losing without even seeing Byakuya’s attacks to fighting on even terms. Even before it kicks into gear, their relative abilities are perfectly matched, making for a thrilling back and forth.
And then the moment finally comes: Ichigo’s bankai. Few moments across Bleach’s 366 episodes are so iconic as the first time Ichigo uses Tensa Zangetsu. The fight from then on runs a gamut of emotions, from confusion at Tensa Zangetsu’s unremarkable shape compared to other Bankai to excitement at Ichigo’s crazy fast movements to shock at the emergence of Hollow Ichigo. All of that culminates in a final clash as the two fighters put everything they’ve got left into one strike. Ichigo vs. Byakuya far and away sets the standard for Bleach fights, and I can’t think of a more deserving fight for the number one spot.

Is Bleach a bad series?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The series is presented in a way that makes you think there's some grand mystery with the Soul King. Aizen asks Kisuke why won't he act with his intellect, how can he obey that "thing". Kisuke says the Soul King is neccessary for the world to exist. Promoting Aizen to say you shouldn't think of the way the world is but rather how it should be. Sounds as the Soul King has a dark secret right? Much much later in the series we have Ichibei saying that the current villain Yhwach is on his own path to peace. We also knew that Yhwach was the son of the Soul King. At this point you wonder if the Soul King is evil but you also know that Kisuke isn't evil so what's going on? Maybe there's no real "bad guy". The Soul King is missing limbs at that. Limbs that act as their own entity. 2 of which Yhwach had under his command, another that Ukitake processed and went against him. So when the series ends quicker than expected without explaining these things in detail it's a major let down. Personally I asked myself what was the point of the series in the grand scheme. Just a generic battle shonen with tons of flaws? The immediate response was that Kubo just didn't have time to explain but how could you possibly not explain main plot points throughout a roughly 700 chapter Manga? I have to wait for a fucking databook that may or may not come out? So far only the novel We Do Knot Always Love You got released thus giving more into the IH ship. This just didn't seem right to me so after looking back and seeing the end result I pieced it together. What the series actually tells is the story of a man who stands above all. I'm not talking about Ichigo, I'm talking about Aizen. Aizen is very intelligent and was overall unrivaled. This led him to develop a superiority complex. As he says to Ukitake "I'll stand in heaven." From his point of view the Soul King is a pathetic existence. Something someone as great as himself shouldn't be bowing down to. Aizen could have overthrown the Soul King if he put his all into it but he didn't because deep inside Aizen doesn't really want to be the end all be all and stand above everyone. A reality where there's no one who can "stand with him", is a lonely one. That's why Kisuke's Kido activated as Ichigo implied. Ichigo goes on to say maybe Aizen wished he was just a regular Shinigami all along. Aizen wanted to be defeated, to have something he couldn't overcome. This ties into why he led Ichigo down a path that could make him strong enough to defeat him. The reason he gave Ichigo that final chance to power up. Now you might I'm totally wrong because in the Blood War Aizen got even more powerful and was angry at Ichigo for stepping into the Palace before him. The thing is that Aizen does want to win as well. This is what makes up his psychological complexity. Achieving his goals is the core of this character but he subconsciously is looking to lose. The end game of Bleach is to present the flaw of the villains who cause Ichigo's growth and journey with said characters. In Soul Society it's Ichigo-Renji-Kenpachi-Byakuya with Rukia as the basis. In the Arrancar arc it's Ichigo-Grimmjow-Ulquiorra-Aizen with Orihime as the basis. In the Fullbring arc it's Ichigo-Byakuya-Ginjo. Finally with the Blood War Ichigo and Yhwach, the man truly responsible for his mother's death. With those last pages of Yhwach revealing his plan Ichibei's words make sense. Granted I argue Yhwach is an overall terrible villain and that the series could have ended somewhere around the Fullbring arc with adjustments to the story. Out of the 3 I'd say Yhwach's end game and the philosophy Kubo played up with him in comparison to Aizen and Ginjo was stupid and unnecessary. With things as they are I'd say the real ending of the series to me is when Ichigo unlocked his true Zanpaktou (chapter 542). With the exceptions of the romance between Ichigo and Orihime being followed through in the final arc and fan service like seeing Kenpachi's Shikai and Bankai, I don't think there was any real reason for the series to continue. The presentation of the series is questionable and there's a lot of technical flaws but overall I think the series is pretty good when you look at the bigger picture. A 7.5/10 overall, a 9/10 during the moments it was at it's best like Ichigo vs Grimmjow or Ichigo vs Ulquiorra.
