Mine is the dense biozone, i love the unique plant-life (especially the big leaves that lift you up) + the big brain rocks, also the colour scheme is the most pleasing to me and it's cool when you dig and the dirt has red and blue on different facets it makes it look shimmery.

ALSO also the winding pits I like traveling up and down them making paths on the sides (also the thrill of one wrong move, and i plummet to my doom (THOSE WALLS ARE SLIPPERY)).

Big Cave 1: Dense Biozone

��You thought that was a bioweapon?��� 

The translator broke down for a second as the creature did a sort of broken exhale. Connotations were all that came through. Vague implications. Pity, the software flashed. Disgust. Anger.

A pause as it decided.  

Sadism. 

Valta was already backing away. The final decision didn’t change his behavior, it just made the hall feel far, far too short. 

“I didn’t order it deployed. I didn’t make it.” 

The thing was staring at him, and he couldn’t look away. The two eyes moved in such perfect tandem that he didn’t think it was conscious. It only had binocular vision because it only needed binocular vision. Always the predator, never the prey. 

And now it was moving in on him. 

“Oh, but what if you had? Then I could tell you all the things that were wrong with it.” 

One of its hands - a sprawling, five fingered  spindly thing - traced carelessly along the station's walls. 

“No incubation period. Symptoms arrive within 40 minutes of exposure. No time to spread undetected. Minimum should be one week. Embarrassingly low.” 

The pressure the thing was putting on the wall increased, the gentle glide turning into a buzzing scratch. Humans were strong, but not strong enough to cut through metal like this. The suit had to be powered and clawed. 

“Spread through contact. Limited waterborne. No airborne. Intended mechanism of infection is viral load being put on hands from scratching, and then passed into the environment. Pathetically inefficient.” 

The translator was working, but the thing was overeunounciating each word. The meaning was being passed along by a clean, helpful voice in his suit, even as the sound was being passed on through the environmental speakers. And the sound was dreadful - clicks of ceramized bone jarring against each other, wet muscles modulating air into something sharp and rasping. 

“Mechanism of death? Lysis overload. Could be dangerous if it was transmitted into the lungs, but since the initial load tends to be dermal all we wind up with-”

It took its helmet off.

It looked a little pink, actually. A little scratchy. It lifted a delicate, taloned hand and rubbed its face against it for a moment before finishing. 

“-is a rash.”

Valta’s prey drive had glued him to the spot. It was too close. The stupid, stupid part of his brain that still thought he was grazing on Duranga hoped that if he stood still long enough, it might not notice him. 

The human paused a moment before continuing. 

“Do you know why they sent me? Alphonse Ericsen, PhD, MD, civilian doctor, here to speak with you?”

Valta’s snout twitched. The suit translated the gesture for him. 

“No.” 

“Because one of our grunts is a dumb fuck,” the human said simply. “And he spent two days fighting on your station with his helmet off. He got infected that way and brought back your stupid, itchy plague to our carrier ship, and now we’ve all spent the last 8 hours scratching ourselves raw. But the jokes on you, because when we were treating that guy you know what we found? That he was in the asymptomatic phase of a COVID infection. So if this-”

It gestured to its pink face with a snarl. 

“-is your idea of a bioweapon, then COVID is going to be your apocalypse. But if you work with me, and shut everything the fuck down for the next three or four months, I might be able to save most of you.” 

Valta unstuck at that. He’d spent weeks down here, worrying about nothing more than the next skirmish. Now he was looking at a genuine existential threat. 

“...What? Why would you help us? We wanted you to die. All of you. I wanted-”

The human cut him off with an exasperated wave of his hand. 

“You wanted something stupid. Doesn’t mean I have to join you. Best I can do to fix you is keep you alive and hope that you feel ashamed later. That, I genuinely look forward to. Now come on, you’re going to be the one explaining to all your friends what’s at stake here. My bedside manner is so bad that they limited my patients to virology slides and USMC marines. I think that’s actually one rung below the guys that just dissect cadavers.” 

Valta would’ve made an amused hum at that, but something already felt scratchy inside his throat.

Breaking News: Branch from Brozone got arrested for drunk driving...

Branch Left Guy Diamond's party, not knowing that he was highly intoxicated and speeding. The cops caught onto him, and when news broke that Branch from Biozone got arrested, everyone was shocked, even his girlfriend, Queen Poppy. They all wanted to go down to the station to visit Branch, but they weren't allowed to for some reason. Branch did meet some old friends way back in the Trolls band together.

As the cops opened, the Branch's jail cell was tiny cause he was just a troll. Branch was just sitting there across from him. I was the superstar twins who used to be as Velvet saw Branch. "Hey you!" she called out as Branch looked around "Over here, peanut brains." veneer called out as Branch saw across from him it was the twins "Good to see you, the guy who got us arrested." velvet said with her usual sass

"umm veneer was the one who got you both arrested Plus you did kidnap and nearly kill my brother and your attitude hasn't changed much after all those years." branch replied

"No, I did not! Wait, did I? Oh, haha, yes, I totally got us arrested." Veneer said

"What brings you in there?" veneer asked. "Did karma finally hit you?" velvet asked, not making eye contact with the blue troll

"Let's just say I was a bad boy; I did some bad thing; I swear I did it all for fun, and it meant nothing," Branch said. "And then what happened?" veneer asked. Veneer was way more interested than Velvet was in why Branch got arrested.

"Another late night, another crazy mood, And I didn't think twice what it would do to me. I was a wild troll at one of my friend's parties; he threw it because he wanted to welcome my brothers into the troll village, and I drank too much, and It was a matter of time before I blew it." Branch reply

"Let me guess, your step wasn't NSYNC? when the cops pulled you over please that's worse than what we did." velvet said

"You literally almost killed my big brother!" branch snapped at Velvet. "Cry me a river, old man." velvet said, rolling her eyes at him

"Anyways, moving on, when the cops pulled me over and started asking me questions, I thou shall not lie, and I also Thou shall not get caught, so they made me do those line steps." the branch said

"again, old man, they were out of sync rather than NSYNC, and there you are ending up just like us, stuck in jail," Velvet said

"Karma a bitch, little dude." veneer replied

"I should've known better. If I had a wish, I would've never messed around," Branch said

"When I heard the story of me getting arrested, I felt the knife twist," Branch said

"Well, hate to be you but Karma's a bitch, and she's with you right now," Velvet replied...

anyway speaking of dreams i had a dream the dungeon meshi party was in a different dungeon & there were new supporting characters. it was closer vibe-wise to a cave, maybe like a drg map. the area had a lot more direct verticality than "go down the stairs". it was also more like a video game style. they/we had to keep going around, gathering things, doing quests, to unlock deeper parts of the dungeon. i remember the map really well.

the main feature was a chinese-inspired city in the middle of a lake that formed inside a dead leviathan's ribcage. contrary to popular belief, it's not the dragon they're living in (you can see the dragon's much smaller skull off to the side), but the animal it killed. asian dragons are generally noble so it's assumed the skeleton the city is in is of an evil creature. they called it long city as respect for the dragon. because long means dragon.

we could get deeper by going down through the spine in the middle of the lake. the city itself wasn't TRULY anchored to most of the ground, but there was a connecting part, so our goal was to get enough favor with the queen? of the area that she'd permit us deeper.

there were several other biomes around. one closely resembled drg dense biozone but with a lot of stationary enemies. the poison swamp. i think the cave in the back was a limestone cave. other people lived there.

shuro dungeon meshi was also in the dragon city, also trying to get deeper. he didn't like seeing laios there.

anyway the main part there was a part where you needed a picture of chilchuck where he was recognizable as the last thing for a really long & obnoxious quest chain. i think part of that quest included: - you needed to find & rescue somebody's pet dogthing - you needed to go to the poison area to gather a bunch of rare herbs for a vendor who would then give you something else, which you gave to another vendor, which then gave you somethign else you needed to combine with this other thing, etc etc. - there was like an adventurer's guild we needed to check in with constantly - i remember a funny dynamic duo. there was a short guy with a tall hat like a british guard or w/e. and another guy. they would appear to be following us through all these quests. - you needed to do a favor for the sextuplet princesses (?).

anyway the very last step was getting a picture of chilchuck. he refused to be photographed, but i figured i'd ask my friends on discord if they had a good shot of him. 3 people sent a manga panel of falin. 1 person sent a screenshot of him from the anime where he's like a motion blur in the corner. i was like "this is falin" & they were like "she won't know" & i was like "come on don't make me try to take a candid shot i just want to get this over with"

Slight retcon (haha yeah already):

Project Sonar wasn't what G.U.N. wanted him to study, but it was a prominent side project of his. He's already been transferred to the Space Colony ARK and completes projects G.U.N. assigns to him, working on Sonar in his off time. With Project Sonar's completion and current testing phase, G.U.N. begins to think of ways they could acquire a Mobian super-being of their own. They could try to claim ownership over Sonar, but they're sure this would not bode well with their relationship with Gerald, so they don't try to do it that way.

Because everyone is on the ARK already, this is where Maria is born and raised, as with canon. Sonar was also made on the ARK.

There's still grass and butterflies in the biological zones on the ARK, including the testing arena Sonar gets monitored in for simulated deep diving.

Continuing off that last Sonar AU post...

So, Sonar's water healing becomes a bigger focus, and he begins to test different illnesses with her. He doesn't directly inject her with them at first, not wanting Sonar to get sick herself and be unable to heal it. Instead, he directs her to use her power on petri dishes with different illnesses, viruses, bacteria, and diseases.

It's slow going at first, but Gerald is patient. He's sure she can figure it out. And Sonar is as casual as ever, accepting the task and humming as she tries to work.

She doesn't get to meet Maria yet. Instead, Gerald leaves Sonar in the lab and goes to spend time with his granddaughter.

Maria is healthier at the time. She can walk and run and everything. While she's been diagnosed, she's still a little child. The sickness has yet to take a hold of her, and Gerald enjoys seeing his little granddaughter so happy.

It's around this time that Gerald receives a new assignment: Project Shadow.

The current president of the United Federation requests Gerald to look into immortality, with the underlying intent of creating a weapon of mass destruction. Gerald, of course, thinks it's ridiculous at first and rejects acceptance, though the president says he'll leave the opportunity open when he decides to take it.

Gerald think he never will. There's no point in working on such an ominous and impossible task.

But Sonar's power is proving unable to eliminate the illnesses in the petri dishes. She's mildly casual about it, but expresses some shame when she sees the professor's unhappy expression.

Maria is starting to get sicker as well. She was able to run and walk and play, but now, she's starting to slow down. She's starting to cough. She gets sick after visiting one of the biozones and it dwells for so, so long.

It was just supposed to be the flu. But she's been bedridden with it for three weeks, and her body simply cannot fight it on its own.

Gerald begins pushing Sonar more, eventually coming to the conclusion it has to be injected in her for it to work. She can't adequately kill already dying cells at her current power. So, he starts injecting her with illnesses.

Sonar takes it in stride, though she feels pretty terrible at times. She doesn't like being sick. But if she doesn't like it, then she needs to heal it.

Killing bacteria and viruses are different from healing cells, though. Still, she eventually manages to accurately get rid of the virus once injected into her.

She's presented with the petri dish again, and this time, she's successful. Gerald then pushes her to use her water more precisely, but it's happening too slowly. His testing beforehand has been much too lax, he realizes.

It gets to the point that Sonar becomes frustrated by the change in behavior. Why was Gerald suddenly becoming meaner to her? What had she done wrong? It doesn't make sense!

So, Gerald decides to answer her questions.

He takes Sonar out of the lab and testing areas, walking her there with guards following. And then, for the first time, Sonar meets Maria.

She's sick in bed with the same flu Gerald had given her. But it seems so much worse. Sonar hates seeing such a small child struggling like this.

"I'm pushing you now so that you can help her. But you've complained instead of growing."

At that moment, Sonar feels shame once again, her cheeks flushing as she stares down at her feet. That kid is suffering a lot more than she is, but she's been the one fussing.

Properly cowed, she goes back to training without complaints, even after it gets tougher.

Still, she's not powerful enough to present a solution quickly. So, Gerald takes some of her blood, coming up with a theory. Perhaps, in the same way the antidotes to venom comes from horses, the antidote to this strain of flu can come from her.

His initial plan was to have Sonar use her powers to affect Maria and kill the virus that way, but that's entirely too risky with how weak Sonar is. So, he takes Sonar's blood and puts it under a microscope, testing it with the virus strain Maria has.

It's weak and it takes a bit, but Sonar's cells eventually do eradicate the virus before they die off. But Gerald needs it to work quickly.

So, Sonar gets injected with a stronger flu strain, and after some suffering on Sonar's part, she heals from it. Blood gets taken and tested, and this time, it gets rid of the strain inside Maria much faster.

He uses the remaining blood to make a cure, and he injects it into Maria.

She's out of bed within three days, thanking her grandfather for feeling better.

Gerald is thankful it worked this time...but Sonar is entirely too weak. Her healing powers are not sufficient.

But...if he were to try making something immortal, perhaps he could also make it invulnerable to illnesses. That could work very well.

So, several months after it was first presented to him, Prof. Gerald Robotnik decides to accept Project Shadow.

But check this out, here’s a cave I dropped in a few days ago- in Dense Biozone. Dense Biozone! Usually I hate the place, all big and difficult to climb, but this was beautiful. No scraped knees and no hidden leeches- now that’s a smooth mission!
