DinCobb Week Day 4: AU/Freebie (SFW)
for @dincobbweek this time we’re returning to a favourite AU of mine. The Halo universe!
i’ve previously explored a Halo/Mandalorian AU. the first story is very much NSFW but this story acts as a prequel showing how Cobb and Din meet in that verse
before we get started here is some very handy terminology
ODST - Orbital Drop Shock Trooper Spartan - a term for someone who was a child soldier and given physical augmentations to become a weapon ONI - Office of Naval Intelligence (so like the in universe FBI) UNSC - United Nations Space Corp (the army but in space) Covenant - invading alien forces and the main villains in the series Reach - a planet humans had settled that was destroyed by the Covenant
AO3 Link
Blast Radius
When Cobb was told by his CO to expect some heavy infantry of reinforcements, he was expecting another ODST squadron, not a Spartan III whose black and silver armour made him look more like an ONI operative than a functioning war machine for the UNSC.
Now granted, Cobb had nothing against Spartans. Spartans were the reason they were even managing to hold their own against the Covenant. But he did have a problem with this Spartan.
“Sergeant Vanth?”
Cobb looked up from the view into New Mombasa to see his Lieutenant Jo leading forward a heavily armed Spartan.
“Infantry’s arrived,” she said, and Cobb wished she didn’t have her helmet on so he could read her better.
“Sergeant Vanth,” the Spartan said. “Spartan A114 reporting in.” The Spartan then snapped to it and saluted him to show that he knew how to respect his superiors, but Cobb knew better. Spartans had a reputation to Lone Wolf it, and Cobb didn’t need that shit on his team.
“A Spartan,” he said incredulously. The Spartan easily towered over him by nearly a foot. All those augmentations and front of the line armour specs only added to the mass that made all Spartans seem unkillable. But in Cobb’s eyes, it made them cocky as well. “Wasn’t expecting a Spartan.”
“It was all they had on hand to offer,” 114 said.
“Right, well, settle in, big guy. We’re mainly search and rescue. Free hostages and get them to safety while clearing out the nests, you hear?”
114 nodded. “Loudly.” He unhooked a sniper rifle from his back and moved forward to join the rest of Cobb’s team with the look out—without needing to be told or looking to be told.
Cobb sighed. It was going to be a long fight.
…
“Vanth, come in.”
“Go ahead, Issa.”
“I’m spotting Jakal reinforcements on the rooftops. Beam rifles from the looks of it.”
“All. Squad, keep your ears on and your heads low and—”
Cobb heard a crack over head and ducked low as a second one followed shortly after. He held his battle rifle up as he looked for the source of the shots.
“Jakals are cleared. You’re free to go.”
That was 114.
Cobb sighed and clicked his tongue. “A heads up would be nice next time, 114.”
“Time’s of the essence, Sergeant.” Then he heard a ‘click’ and Cobb knew the bastard had likely muted on his end.
Fucking Spartans.
…
New Mombasa was a fucking mess. Based on the chatter they were picking up, the Covenant forces seemed to become more and more contained to one part of the city, like they were congregating. Other ODST squads had been deployed to hotter areas in the city, and Cobb’s smaller strike team made it easier for infiltration to minimalize casualties. They were the cleaning crew, really, and Cobb didn’t mind that.
But he did mind that his Spartan was deathly silent most of the time.
He had 114 act as their eyes. With his high-powered scope, he was able to get a better view of the terrain before Cobb’s team went down in to clear it out, and Cobb had to admit, 114 was a good shot. Those enhanced reflexes sure came in clutch in the best ways possible, but Cobb was expecting at least some communication on his end.
114 acted like a brick wall and Cobb hated it. He knew nothing of the Spartan, didn’t even know his name, and while it was nice to be fighting with someone who was this well skilled, Cobb didn’t know if he’d choose 114 over another top notch ODST squad.
“Looks like we got a standard fair here,” Jo said. “Couple of Brutes. Grunts as back up and a Jakal nest.”
Cobb nodded. “You see a Chieftain?”
“Nah, looks like pretty standard fare for them.”
“Good. Listen up! We clear this intersection and that gets us one step closer to the bank. You play it safe and you play it hard. Cover always. Focus fire on Jakals and Grunts and then the Brutes. Clear the field before we got in heavy. Got it?”
He received a chorus of Oo Rahs! and then utter silence from 114. “Hey, Spartan, you got that?”
The Spartan nodded and said nothing.
“Good. I want you on that roof top. Take the Jakals and then we move in. Provide cover from the Brutes if they get close.”
“I think it’d be better if I were on the ground with you,” the Spartan said, and Cobb was surprised he said anything at all—let alone battle advice.
“No,” Cobb said. “You’re best on the rooftops.”
“But—”
“That’s an order, Spartan.”
He could see that 114 was frustrated with how he tightened his grip around his sniper, but he fell in line all the same and marched off to find a perch of the sight before the team moved in to clear the junction.
“Get into position,” he said to his team, and they all crouched for cover and waited for 114 to get into position.
He looked through the scope of his battle rifle and scoped out the scene. Four Brutes, half a dozen Grunts, and two Jakals. Nothing in comparison to what Cobb had dealt with before, but it was better to play things safe and slow rather than to rush in.
“114, check in,” he said.
Silence.
“114, this is Sergeant Vanth. Check in.”
Again, silence. And then he knew why.
Rather than targeting the Jakals first and letting the squadron in there was a sudden explosion that caught Cobb off guard. 114 had discharged a round into one of the plasma cells stacked in the area that took the Covenant force by surprise, killing one Brute in the onslaught. Then Cobb saw 114 jump into the fray from what should’ve been his perch, taking a running jump to clear a distance of a dozen or so feet and come to the ground in a roll to lessen the impact from a fifteen foot drop. Then he struck with deadly precision on the Covenant left recovering from the shock.
“Fuck,” Cobb said. “Issa, eyes on the Jakals.”
“You got it, Sarge.”
“The rest of you, eyes forward! Now!”
He leapt over his cover, raised his rifle against his shoulder and began to pick off the Grunts one by one, while 114 aimed for the Brutes. And he was doing so with just a magnum pistol and a knife.
One of the Brutes raised his spiker in Cobb’s direction, and he dove down behind a concrete barrier as the deadly spikes imbedded themselves into the asphalt where he had just been standing previously. A Grunt jumped into his field of vision on his left and he turned and fired, hitting the Grunt’s methane tank, which he saw spark and catch before it blew. He raised his hands for cover and then looked over the barrier to see the field. The Grunts were fleeing. The Jakals were dead, and 114 was locked in combat with the only remaining Brute until he managed to drive his knife into the Brute’s throat and finish it off with a shot from the magnum until the Brute fell dead.
Cobb charged up to him. “What was that!?”
114 wiped his knife off his vambrace before sheathing it. “I told you. It was better to have me on the ground.”
“You disobeyed an order!” It was hard to feel commanding in contrast to a Spartan, who towered over Cobb in every way and could likely throw him up against the wall.
“It was efficient. You aren’t using me for my skills.” It also didn’t help that 114 was a calm speaker, rarely showing any form of inflection.
“Your skills are firing cover. My team can handle the job on their own. Disobey me like that again and I’ll see you reassigned.”
The Spartan looked at him, head tilted down in his direction. For the longest time he didn’t move until he took a half step back.
“Clear?” Cobb said.
“Clear, Sergeant.”
“Good.”
He looked over his shoulder to his team and waved them forward. “We’re moving.”
…
Scrounging in conditions like this were hard. Training to be an ODST required a certain amount of time in the field already before jumping into training specifically to handle an orbital drop. And then from there it was ‘survive until you group up or you’re pulled out’, which meant with the sun falling on the city that was burning, it was time to break for an MRE and some water before the final push into the heart of the city to help with the withdrawal of ONI scientists. It was the last job before the UNSC was pulling out the troops, which meant that ONI was going nuclear with its facilities so it wouldn’t fall into the hands of the enemy. New Mombasa was being abandoned in the short run. Once the Covenant was off Earth, they’d probably try to rebuild, but for now, it was pull back and see what happened.
It was nice, for a moment to sit on the ground with his back against the wall and his helmet off. It could’ve been a nice day in the city. The sun was warm. There was a breeze cooling his sticky skin from the sweat when the internal fans in his helmet couldn’t cool him fast enough.
But then he saw the Spartan who stood there rigidly off to the side of their little encampment. He had his back to the rest of them and seemed as if he was still on patrol despite the fact that the area was safe and they needed to rest before the final push.
Cobb sighed and got to his weary feet. He walked forward, grabbing at his pouch for one of the MREs he still had left. “Hey, Spartan.”
114 only turned to look over his shoulder.
“You eat yet?”
“Not hungry,” he said, before looking over the highway they were on and the sheer drop it led to.
“Come on, partner. You gotta eat. We’ve been going for near twelve hours and at least another twelve yet before we’re out for good.” Cobb stepped in front of him and handed out the MRE. He didn’t know if Spartans had the same standards as ODSTs. Did he carry MREs? Looked like he had water at the least.
Then 114 did lift his hand and take the MRE from Cobb’s hand. “Thank you.”
“Nothin’ to it, pal.” He stepped back, slapped 114 on the arm, and went back to his squad.
Then, when Cobb was sitting on the ground once more, he saw the Spartan move to a concrete barrier and take a seat. Then he removed his helmet, showing only a shock of dark hair, overgrown by UNSC standards. He didn’t see his face, but at least the Spartan ate.
…
Their final push into New Mombasa was the ONI facility itself, a giant cube looking building built in the center of a manmade pond to look fancy. It was a rough sight, but under the cover of darkness, it wasn’t like Cobb could see it all that well. All he was looking at was the sight of four ONI scientists being overlooked by a Covenant strike team—which included a Brute Chieftain.
Chieftains were worse than the usual foot soldier Brutes. Their armour was heavier, including armour that could only be struck through or cracked at the very least with specific armour piercing rounds. Chieftains also usually carried heavier weaponry, and this one had a gravity hammer on his back.
“They’ll want to keep the scientists alive,” Cobb said. “That’ll be our advantage to get in. Issa, what do you see?”
“By my count? Five Brutes on top of the Chieftain. A dozen Grunts. Jakals with shields but no beam rifles.”
“The structure doesn’t make good for sniper nests,” Jo added.
“114, you there?” Cobb asked.
“I’m here.”
“Report in.”
“I’m in position. Not the easiest place to leave in a pinch if you need back up.”
“We’ll go slow,” Cobb said. “Target the Brutes and get them broken up. I don’t want to fight the back.”
“Hear you loud and clear.”
114 went quiet on his end but didn’t mute.
Progress.
Then he turned to the scene at hand to plan the best way forward.
“On your count, 114. You take the lead. We’ll pick off the stragglers.”
“Going loud in three.”
Cobb looked down his scope and breathed in deeply and watched as 114’s first shot landed and struck a brute dead.
“Keep them clear from the hostages,” Cobb said. “I don’t want them taking them anywhere else. Issa, Jo, on me. We’re moving.”
They moved in as a unit before breaking and posting up at the windows that lead into the building they were infiltrating, most of which were broken. Once Cobb had a clear line of sight, he opened fire.
The darkness gave them a natural cover, and with their spread position, the enemy had no idea where they were. They kept the Brutes at bay away from the hostages where they were pressed flat on the floor to cover from the spray of bullets and plasma. For the time being, they had the upper hand until the Brute Chieftain roared and pointed in their direction.
“They’re coming out! Heads up!” Cobb said.
First the Grunts and then the few remaining Jakals which were picked off with deadly precision until the Chieftain himself charged out with his hammer swinging in Jo’s direction.
Cobb stood up from his cover and peppered the Chieftain’s back with bursts of rounds until he turned on Cobb and came in his direction.
“Cobb!” He heard Jo’s concern over the radio, but it was too late.
He rolled and dropped to avoid the Chieftain’s hammer as it discharged a burst that affected the CPU components in Cobb’s armour. But then the Chieftain swung again and the force of it sent him to his back, momentarily stunned before the Chieftain swung the weapon around, showing the sharp edge on the other side of the weapon head before crashing it down on Cobb’s chestplate.
The chestplate cracked under the pressure, and Cobb felt a burst of pain before the force drove the air from his lungs and he laid there, prone and stunned.
His ears were ringing, and he gasped like a fish which only made the wound worse until spots clouded his vision and he blacked out.
He blinked and saw the Chieftain’s armour cracked by an armour piercing round from a sniper.
He blinked again and saw Issa and Jo corner the Chieftain before a second round struck his back before a third struck his neck and he began to tumble.
He blinked and lost sight of what was before him.
…
“Cobb? Cobb.”
“Sarge, lift your right hand if you’re awake.”
“Is he okay?”
“We need to get the hammer out. His lungs could be damaged.”
“I’ll handle that. Hold him steady.”
Pressure on his shoulders, gently so before a wrenching and—
He gasped and coughed, felt pain radiating out from his chest and he tried to raise his hands to cover it, but he was held down gently.
“Spartan, there’s biofoam at his hip.”
“Got it.”
He heard the sound of an aerosol can being applied to his chest before the pressure on his lungs was abated and he could take a deep breath and relax.
“You there, Sarge?”
He nodded and tried to reach back and pat for Issa’s hands.
“Chestplate is cracked,” he heard 114 say. “The biofoam will hold for a few hours, but he needs medical attention.”
“I’ll get to the hostages,” Issa said.
“Evac point is over the bridge,” Jo said. “I’ll post up with Issa and get the hostages to safety. You good with the Sarge?”
“Just fine.”
Then he felt himself being lifted from the ground and cradled close to someone’s chest.
“Hey, Spartan,” he mumbled.
“That was damn reckless. You’re lucky you’re alive.”
“Knew you were watchin’.”
He heard 114 sigh. “Keep your words to yourself, Vanth. This fight isn’t over yet.”
…
He had heavy bruising to his chest and a hairline fracture in his sternum. He was on bedrest for a least a month with another month of light duty. He was lucky his lungs weren’t pierced.
Regardless, he had the luxury of his own private room in an actual hospital and not just a field tent. He was on some medical grade painkillers, and his team was being commended for their bravery. All around successful.
But now with this free time, he intended to do some research—never could abide stagnation for long. He pulled up a datapad and using his UNSC credentials, managed to get into the databases of every active soldier on the ground. He searched for Spartan A114, and as he suspected, he was given a lot of redacted material.
The Spartan III program was still tightly under wraps, but parts of it were being declassified, and through the grapevine, Cobb knew they were different from the old Spartan IIs.
Not as good training facilities. Not as good outcomes or survival rates.
He saw the name ‘Reach’ in 114’s file and knew if the Spartan had survived the planet’s destruction, he was a survivor to reckon with, and also why he didn’t have a fireteam of his own. He probably lost them all in the fray.
Everything else including personal details like date of birth, home planet, and name were redacted, so there wasn’t much else he could look into for the time being. But he did file a request to have 114 placed permanently on his team. He wanted to keep the Spartan close.
…
Friends and teammates would come by and visit him. Issa and Jo in pairs, but then one strange visitor came: a very, very tall man with dark hair, dark eyes, and a neatly kept moustache.
“This seat taken?”
He’d heard that voice of his helmet dozens of times, and Cobb looked at him and couldn’t believe his eyes, that he was seeing the Spartan—his Spartan—out of his armour.
Cobb waved his hand to the chair and pushed a button to have his bed elevated so he could face 114 head on.
It was almost comical to see 114 sit down in a chair not meant for someone of his size, but he made it work. He was dressed in a uniform and not standard military fatigues. There were metals pinned to the beast pocket, and Cobb could see what many of them meant.
“Ceremony?” Cobb asked.
“No. Meeting. I heard you put in a request for me to be made a permanent member of your squad.”
“Well. I liked you. Felt we fought well together eventually. We could use another on our team.”
“I’m surprised you’ve been managing well with only the three of you.”
“Used to be four, but I sacked the other guy.” Cobb shook his head at the memory of Toro and his hot-headed ways. The kid was lucky he hadn’t lost his head if Cobb hadn’t pulled him back time and time again.
“How are you holding up?” 114 asked, eyes drifting to Cobb’s chest and how its swathed with bandage and gauze.
“Eh. Could be worse. Chestplate took the brunt of it though.”
“That’s what it’s for.” 114 breathed in deeply, licked his lips, and looked down at his hands. “It’s . . . it’s good to see you. That you’re okay.”
“Thanks to you.”
“I barely had my sights on him.”
“Hey, Spartan. Look at me.”
He looked up, and Cobb was struck with how upset 114 looked. Upset in almost a sad way.
“I’m here. You killed the Brutes. Hostages made it out. That is a hundred-percent in my books.”
“Still, I . . .” He breathed in, a shuddering breath. “I don’t like watching from afar when my teammates are in the direct line of fire. It makes me feel . . .”
“Like you can’t protect us.”
114 said nothing.
“Listen,” Cobb said. “We can discuss this. Figure out new strategies. My team, we’re new at this. We’ve worked alongside only a handful of Spartans but not directly with one. We’ll figure it out, see what works for the both of us. But I’m not tolerating Lone Wolf shit. We’re a team.”
114 nodded.
“You good, soldier?”
114 raised his head. “Sir, yes, sir.”
Cobb smirked. “That’s what I like to hear.”
Satisfied with that answer, 114 stood and prepared to leave but just before he could get to the door, Cobb called out, “Hey, Spartan. You got a name to add to the A114?”
The Spartan turned to look at him, pulling open the door as he did, and after a moment of hesitation, he said, “Din.”
“Nice to have you, Din. Rest up if you can.”
“Yes, sir.”

request: Can you make a thor oneshot where the reader is teen and has a big crush on him and she or he is always trying to impress with modern culture but one day he reads i dunno her diary and finds loads of pictures ( that he didn’t even knew existed)of him and writings and he confronts the reader
A/N: This is so cute! And I hope I made it as cute as I hoped to. Really interesting to write Thor. I've never done that before. And I love Thor. He was the reason I even started to watch Marvel movies. And I love him. Many injustices were done to his character arc and development, but um... TAIKA WAITITI PLEASE DIRECT THOR 4. I love Thor Odinson. PLEASE SEND MORE REQUESTS WITH HIM!!! Happy reading!

Dear diary,
why do I even start my writings like this? It's stupid and sounds like I'm a helpless romantic girl in some movie. But if I would be in a movie, maybe my dreams would come true...
Yesterday I told Thor about Youtube and he couldn't understand it, not at first. But, when I showed him a couple of cat and fail videos, he found them amusing, and so the idea of using Youtube. He even asked me to help him set up an account. He said he wanted to “capture” the team training or having a fight. A succesful lesson of modern culture for him, that.
Said I'd help him do it tomorrow, which is today and I'm bound to help him whenever he asks. Now I'm going to have a shower and then join the others for breakfast. After that, me and Thor will make him an account on Youtube. I can't wait. Finally, for the first time, I'm going to be alone with him. Me and Thor. Only us two. I can't wait. I already said that. Well, whatever.
Okay, then. I'll return to you later. Hopefully, after a succesful time-spending with Thor.
Thor looks up from the notebook he was reading. His eyebrows are furrowed and his eyes squinted. “So, is she just writing here whatever she thinks? Is that what it's for? And why is almost everything about me?” He thinks.
Thor looked so good today. - June 15th
I miss Thor's long hair, so beautiful. Especially when he tied half of it behind his head. Maybe I should ask him for his hair routine, it's always shiny and flawless... - April 30th
Told Thor about 'yeet' today, in front of others. They made fun of me. And they always do. It's started to get on my nerves. I'm just a kid. Maybe that's exactly why they make fun of me. But Thor didn't. He thanked me for teaching him Earth's modern language. - November 16th
Training with Thor. First time for me. And I couldn't concentrate. One of the most stupid moments in my life. Couldn't stop staring at his muscles that were about to burst from underneath his Tony-given tank. Christ, I still see them now. - March 7th
We had Netflix & Chill today, with the whole crew. My idea again. We started watching Stranger Things, season one. Thor was silent through the episodes. Did he not like it? Was it confusing him? Too colorful? Strange things, if I must say so myself. - July 12th
So many mentions of his name. It seemed weird. And what was even weirder than that were pictures of him. Ones he didn't know were taken. But then again, he never knew when pictures are taken of him. But these ones... These were not taken in public.
One was of Thor in the kitchen, talking with Tony. He remembers that. They were still talking about what's worthy enough to hold Mjolnir. Steve Rogers came into the room later.
Another picture was of Thor smiling, surprisingly, sitting in the sofa, a drink in hand. Thor was remembering another childhood prank he played on Loki to get back at him.
There were some group pictures, with some small doodles around Thor's head. Hearts? Butts? A picture of Y/N and Natasha, a picture of Y/N and Steve. A picture where Y/N is photographed by someone else. And, taking the words underneath the picture, it was Sam Wilson who took the picture.
Then, there are some pictures of Thor in the gym and some with him just practicing with Mjolnir, some with him talking to Vision. Lots of different ones, but mainly with Thor in them.
Some of the pictures looked like... printed chap-snats? Chat-snaps? Snapchats. Yeah. An application in the cellphones that Y/N showed him one day. Thor liked the funny effects the application put on his face.
What was this all about? The pictures, the writings, the doodles? Some sort of... obsession maybe? Or, maybe she's a big fan of him. Either way, the pictures were disturbing Thor only a little bit. So he had to ask her what's that about. They've got to stop, whatever it is. Secretly taking pictures is clearly a violation of privacy, even to a self-loving and loathing god like Thor.
Thor puts the notebook back down on the desk it was laying on before he picked it up. He was actually waiting for Y/N in her room so they could set up the “You-tube” account. Thor was actually excited for that, but what he'd found in the notebook lessened his good mood a bit.
He leans, slightly sitting down, against the desk and waits for Y/N to come in. She will be, he knows that. Thor only left breakfast early cause he wanted to see Y/N's room for himself first. He was afraid, though, so he didn't want to freak the kid out with his reaction. Anything could be in a teenager's room, it could look like a portal to the Dark dimension or just look like a battleground.
But her room is nice, very pretty, fitting to herself. Soft tones, black bed sheets, pretty curtains, shelves full of books and sketchbooks, flowers by her bed and on the desk. There's even a small plush bunny on her bed. Very cute. Thor smiles when he notices it. She must have had it from her childhood.
Y/N walks into the room and stops dead in her tracks. “Thor.” She mumbles, eyes wide. She's actually eating some nuts she took from the kitchen, they scrunch beneath her teeth as she looks at Thor, eyes frozen on his. She's practically hypnotized.
“Y/N.” Thor greets, nodding. “Still enjoying earthly breakfast?” Y/N nods. “Some foods here are good, but nothing like Asgard's was, I have to admit. But, still, you people eat it and you're not dead yet.”
Y/N laughs. Something no one else would do at Thor's strange comments, and it makes him glad someone appreciates his thoughts, someone hears them and doesn't think them weird. Well, at least that's what he thinks she's reacting like.
“God, I always forget to give you Belgian waffles or French Crepes. They're the best, honestly.” She says and walks past him, her posture a bit strange. “You taste them and you have no doubt about our food being at small bit bad.” Thor hums. “So, you came here to set up your Youtube account?”
“Yes, yes, of course. I was waiting for you, lady Y/N.” He responds. “But I, uh, well, I have many questions on my mind, but one of them is uh...”
“Ask away.” Y/N says, opening her laptop. Her eyes are trying not to look at Thor every once in a while. Though, it's very hard.
“What is your blue book for?” He asks, turning slightly to the young girl. She glances at him briefly.
“What? This one?” She points at her diary on the desk next to her laptop. Thor nods. “Oh, it's um, it's only for... Well, not only, I... I leave pictures there and uh, write down whatever I want to. Nothing interesting, really.”
“Nothing interesting? There were some things that intrigued me there, I must admit.” Thor says, boldly, without faltering.
Y/N hums, and only a second later does she realise what his words mean. “Wait, you went through my diary?” She asks, voice full of shock.
“A diary?” Thor echoes. “Yes, well, I did. I thought it... Well, I didn't really think anything, I was just interested cause it... looked pretty.”
Y/N chuckles, but quietly. “Wh-what did you, exactly, see—uh—read in there?” She stumbles over words. Her crush on Thor is about to become very evident, if it wasn't already.
“Oh, uh, your writings and pictures,” Thor says, “May I ask some more questions?”
“Uh-huh.” Y/N says, her voice high-pitched and worry-laced.
“Why do you have pictures of me in your, uh, diary?” He asks and Y/N's entire being freezes. “I assume you're the one taking them.”
Y/N clears her throat. “I, uh, yes, I... I like to take pictures of, uh, of everyone.” She gives her best white lie.
“Do you have, maybe, pictures of others? Like, Captain Rogers or Stark or Natasha? Just them?”
“Natasha, some of her.” Y/N squeals. “The others, I don't... I don't find quite interesting.”
“Not as interesting as me?” Thor clarifies. “I'm flattered, Lady Y/N. But... why draw hearts around me? Do you draw them because you think I'm more interesting?”
“Oh, no,” Thor hears Y/N mumble as she throws her head in her hands. He looks at her with concern, worried if she's sad or anxious, “okay, I'm just gonna tell you and embarrass myself in the process, but at least I'll get it over with now and quick.” She rambles, looking into Thor's eyes. The god nods. “I, uh, I just... I kinda... Well, I like you more than the others. We call it a crush between teenagers. It's when you...”
“Oh, I understand.” Thor says, nodding. He looks away and Y/N anxiously watches him think it over, what she said. Oh, crap, he's going to laugh at her. He's going to laugh and then tell everyone else. Maybe she should not have said anything at all. “That's completely okay, Lady Y/N. Thank you for telling me.” He says. “It's all okay, but... you're just young. And returning those feelings wouldn't be right.”
Y/N nods.
“You look sad, miss Y/N.” Thor says after they both nod in silence to each other. “Let me give you an embrace.” He opens his arms to Y/N and she nods once again before letting herself fall into the god's embrace. He rubs her back comfortably, but finding it strange that she's quiet, not saying anything. He has to make her feel better. “Can we watch the cats dancing again?” Thor asks and hears the familiar sound of Y/N's giggle.

@jongin-be-my-jagi tagged me for this a while ago, but I took my sweet time to answer. Here is my secret intel if you want to know me a little bit more!! Check hers as well, she’s an amazing writer and friend. 1. What takes up too much of your time? Tumblr, my stupid procrastination prone brain and my thesis.
2. What makes your day better? Friends and loved ones, music and these absolute dorks (Channie especially)
3. What’s the best thing that happened to you today? I hopped on the mat today in the early hours of the morning, rain on my window and the neighbours cat peeking at me from his window across the street.
4. What fictional place would you like to go to? Wonderland, bacause it’s “curiouser and curiouser!”
'Who are you?' said the Caterpillar. Alice replied, rather shyly, 'I — I hardly know, sir, just at present — at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.'
5. Are you good at giving advice? I think so. Not so good at following my own advice though. I do always consider where the other is standing and if I don’t know how to proceed then I’ll just be honest and say I can’t help. But i’ll always listen with my heart.
6. Do you have any mental illnesses? Not diagnosed. I do think i might be going through something now.
7. Have you ever experienced sleep paralysis? No, but i have a recurring nightmare: the world is made of black and white paper thin layers. I am a paper thin person walking along a street surrounded by paper thin buildings. I walk for a long time, looking up at the white sky. Until the street ends, there is no more building and i fall into the abyss of a blank page. I have had this dream since the age of 8 or 9 years old. Fear of not being good enough, you say?! Ding, ding, ding!! We got a winner in the back! 8. What musician inspired you the most? I get inspired by music all the time!! One of my all time favourite songs is Spanish Sahara by Foals. Its sublime!
youtube
So I’d say I’m mainly inspired by these artists: Queen, Arctic Monkeys, Foals, Radiohead, Bowie, Daughter, Bob Dylan, Beirut, Yeah yeah yeahs, Arcade Fire, The National, Joy Division, Blur, Warpaint, Gorillaz, Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, Chet Baker, The Cure, Courtney Barnett, The Maccabees, Car Seat Headrest, Florence + The Machine, Editors, Kasabian, Crystal Fighters, Death Cab for a cutie, The Doors, Efterklang, Explosions in the Sky, Franz Ferdinand, The Horrors, James Blake, José Gonzalez, Los Campesinos!, Metronomy, Nick Cave, Nina Simone, Patrick Watson, Phoenix, Sharon Van Etten, The Shins, Simon & Garfunkel, The Smiths, St.Vincent, The Strokes, Toro y Moi, tricot, Tune-Yards, TV on the radio, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Vaccines, Vampire Weekend, The Velvet Underground, The War on Drugs, Wild Beasts and Yo La Tengo.
And the electro, pop and hip-hop groves of my heart: EXO, 2NE1, Janelle Monáe, Big Bang, Kris Wu,LCD soundsystem, SBTRKT, Childish Gambino, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar and Daft Punk.
And special mentions to the portuguese ones (learning from yixing and promoting when i can :P): Capicua, Joana Espadinha, The Legendary Tigerman, Linda Martini, Mayra Andrade, Noiserv, Ornatos Violeta, Paus, Samuel Uria, You Can’t Win Charlie Brown and The Silence 4. I know, tldr right? Sorry folks! 9. Have you ever fallen in love? Yes I have. I have mistaken a crush for love too. But i have definitely been very deeply in love. A wrecked kintsugi heart over here people! 10. What’s your dream date? I don’t think I have one. I’d love to do something unique with that someone special, something special for the two of us. It could be as simple as riding the subway while sharing earphones & listening to our playlist or walking the dogs out! Idk, I’m easy to please. But right now it would have to be with this handsome man :D pretty please?!
11. What do others notice about you? I am very kind and warm hearted, so I think that’s what people first notice when meeting me. Although I maintain good eye contact, I am also timid and will be quieter if there are very energetic people in the group. When alone, I usually take the first step and try to meet people, but only if i really must. 12. What’s an annoying habit you have? It’s really hard for me to ask for help. I also like to tell detailed descriptions of everything... Couldn’t you tell? 13. Do you still talk to your first love? I’ll text him on his birthday and he does the same to me. We met when we were 10 years old and that childhood friendship remains. But regarding my one and truly deep relationship, no we do not talk, unless we randomly meet.
14. How many exes do you have? I have three exes. The first love who was just an idealized crush on my childhood friend: we dated for 2 weeks during summer break xD Then my first real boyfriend, we met in my first year at university, dated for quite some time, he really loved me and made me love myself a little more. Finally the one i loved too much. I mended his wounds and made him love himself as much as I did. I always say all the love we feel makes our hearts grow bigger. I do not regret loving any of them, I am me now due to them and I would not change it if I could. 15. How many songs are in your playlist? I have way too many playlists for each and every mood... But my favourite songs list on spotify has about 1500 songs! uwu! 16. What instruments can you play? Triangles and flute?! I had mandatory music classes in school... so in reality I can’t really play a instrument...
17. Who do you have the most pictures of? Probably my cat, Sushi. With a second close of my doodles and sketches.
18. Where would you like to go before you die? EVERY WHERE!!! But I really want to go to Japan and Scotland and Iceland and South Korea and New Zealand and i’ll shut up. 19. What’s your zodiac? Capricorn. 20. Do you relate to it? Sort of.
21. What is happiness to you? You know when it’s really cold outside in the winter and you manage to find a sheltered place where no wind can hit you and you still get to feel the warm rays of the winter suns on your skin? You hear the birds outside and you are contempt in that moment, at peace. That is happiness to me. 22. Are you going through anything right now? Yes, I am a bit lost. Trying to finish my thesis and trying to find what I want to do after. It’s liberating but also pretty scary. 23. What’s the worst decision you ever made? It’s a series of small decisions really. It started with going for a phd with the same people i worked in my msc. Should have gone to a different place. Then deciding to come home after a traumatic loss in the family. Should have kept my life going but I stalled it then. (I don’t regret helping my loved ones though).
24. What’s your favourite store? Probably Wishtrend for beauty stuff. Other than that I don’t have any favourite brands/stores. 25. (HALFWAY!) What’s your opinion on abortion? I think everyone is free to decide what they want or need to do. I couldn’t possible judge. If I would it? Probably not.
27. Do you have a favourite album? I don’t think so, I have favourite tunes for different moods and moments in my life. But if threatened with my life, I’d maybe say Total Life Forever from Foals.
28. What do you want for your birthday? It’s such a long time until my birthday comes! But maybe a real EXO ot9 reunion as a goodbye to Minseok?
29. What is most people’s first impression of you? Friendly and easy to open up to, i think.
30. What age do you seem according to most people? In real life, people usually think I am way younger than I am. 31. Where do you keep your phone when you’re sleeping? In the crook of my bed, between the mattress and the bed frame.
32. What word do you say the most? No idea really! 33. What’s the oldest age you’d date? 40s? I don’t think too much about age actually.
34. What’s the youngest age you’d date? 20s? Again not very important to me. Love is love, whomever, whenever and wherever <3
35. What job / career do most people say would suit you? I don’t know! People always say i don’t totally fit in anything... so there’s that. If you have an idea please let me know! 36. What’s your favourite music genre? Go back to question 8. I listen to everything! :D 37. If you could live in any country in the world where would it be? I’d like to live around the world, every few months a different place and get to know different cultures.
38. What is your current favourite song? I’ve been obsessed with RM’s intro/teaser song, Map of the Soul: Persona. (I’m not even a bts fan, but this music and lyrics just touched me a lot.)
youtube
39. How long have you had this blog for? I think for about 6 years? It’s my personal space, where I dump all my obsessions.
40. What are you excited for? I’m visiting some friends in Granada in a couple of weeks. Yay, tapas!
41. Are you a better talker or listener? Normally I am a better listener. But there are a few people to whom i open like a book. Either words flow right out of me without even thinking or they see throw me. Those truly are my people.
42. What is the last productive thing you did? Prepped meals and cleaned the kitchen. Open the folder and file of my thesis. Read the latest chapter I wrote. 43. What do you want for Christmas? Well, just like for my birthday, there is still such a long time to it! But let’s say i want to have already finish this part of my life and want to find my next adventure.
44. What class do you get the best grades in? No more exams! Ehehe! But I used to have good grades at everything. Physical Education was my lowest mark i think.
45. On a scale of 1-10 how do you feel right now? Right now, a 4? I have a headache.
46. What can you see yourself doing in 10 years? Smiling? :D I want to be happy in my own skin. To feel contempt in my life, doing something that gives me a sense of purpose and having time to share and enjoy with my friends and family. 47. When did you get your first heartbreak? Oh my kintsugi heart has been broken quiet a lot. By friends and lovers and even by myself. I keep patching it up with gold dreams though. 48. At what age do you wanna be married? I will only want to be married if i find the one. So until then I guess.
49. What career did you want to have as a child? I wanted to be an astronaut and a ballerina. Preferably both!
50. What do you crave right now? Just sitting somewhere and listening to Yeol play the guitar.
Well i finished it! :D I’ll tag @thedeviousdo @ohsenhun @hongseok and @paepsi. I’d love to read yours! Feel free to dismiss it though, it is quite a lot. Lots of love everyone!! <3 <3 <3

Water
Water. We are constituted from 70% of water, we need water to continue living, I mean, sure oxygen is the biggest non-negotiable dependable element to our operational state of being, but water was unquestionably the second most important. Water soothes. Water heals. Water cleans and cleanses. The sound of water relaxes - rain, ocean, bath water's gentle tingle and dripple.
"How do you say water in Norwegian?"
He soaked the sponge and squeezed it out on the back of my neck.
"..."
One last run.
"I'll let you finish up."
"Thanks for everything, Sven."
"It's nothing."
My heart melted when I saw that the clothes he was lending me were his own. A black hoodie cut in the shape of t-shirt with white sleeves and the mention "cult leader" on the chest, a pair of dark grey sweatpants with a cord to adjust the waist, and a nondescript pair of new, clean, pair of undies. Aww! Thank you Sven! For a second I thought of sporting only the panties and hoodie and go down like that but it could be too much. Too much, too fast. My mind ran in the hypothetical alternate reality and my heart raced a little. His hand slipping under the hoodie, freeing me from the whooping five minutes it had been in service. My tongue swirling around his. Would it be long, slow strokes or would be caught by fire and rushing it a little? A hand was bound to rid me of the undies, a finger or two would soon press against Satan's doorbell... Unless it had another appellation when someone else maneuvered the rosebud?
I drained the bath water, trying to cool my thoughts. It would be mistake...
You mean another one on your extensive list of?
You'll have to agree he'd be one hell of a hot mistake though.
We are trying to heal from the last one. Snap out of it!
I pulled my tongue at my other self iny head. Party pooper!
Was I that desperate or that weak? Now, this is a question to be dissected later on, with a proper cooled down head, back at the B&B. Apparently, it was suggested that rape victims get back in an active sexual encounter or experience, but was that method samely valid for broken hearts?
I dried my hands and went down to find Sven sitting on the floor of the living room, like we were on our first morning, cards laid out on the coffee table before him. He picked up one, studied the illustration and put it back, carefully, with the upmost respect, as if some ancient, unknown to him, powerful fairy would suddenly jump out straight to his jugular.
"They don't bite, you know."
He looked up, caught red handed. Why was he so adorable and charming and... Sven, you weren't meant to... Oh, wait, I never had the power to decide how others would makeme feel by simply existing and tumbling in my life.
Space was tight but I snuck in between the table and him, sitting between his legs. Is the message clear enough, Sir? 8 was happy, though, that he couldn't see my flushing face because my attitude was causing a serious cheek burn!
"What were you asking them?" I asked, leaning back against him, making myself comfortable.
Right on cue, his arm comfortably rounded itself around me, blessing my prosperous attitude with the answer I was hoping for.
"The first row, I asked if a girl I been seeing recently, had any mutually shared interest and feelings."
Ace of Wands, Ace of Cups, Lovers.
"How is said girl?"
"Hard to pinpoint." He kissed the back of my head. "Only known her for three days."
I snort giggled. Well, then, the cards have spoken and blatantly betrayed me.
"The Ace of Wands can be a young passionate person, a lovable rogue, they like action and are fiery. Could be an astrological sign ruled by fire. They like action, travels, diversified experiences, expanding knowledge, philosophy."
"I am fairly certain she likes to travel, yes. Sadly don't knkw her astrology nor if she likes phylosphy."
I swallowed my saliva as discreetly as I could and combatted stress induced stiffness.
"She's a Leo and she loves poking the mind's terra incognita."
Sven dropped a kiss behind my ear.
"Favorite intellectual or phylosopher?"
Cornered.
"I don't really know. I often drop Nietzsche's name but it's mainly because of that one nugget of gold he had left us."
"What doesn't kill us makes us stronger." (in Norwegian)
"I'll have to trust you on this one." I picked up the Ace of Cups. "New romance, new feelings, elation, a sense of conquering the world. Heart is overflowing with bounty, happiness. And the Lovers is the nail nailing the coffin shut. Especially in a love and romance reading, it's one of the best omens you could hope for."
Second row had the King of Cups surrounded by the Eight of Wands and the 6 of swords. (4 /5 of Cups)
"What was your question here?"
"How does she - you - perceive me?"
"You are the king of Cups, an emotionally mature man who is in full control of their feelings so you can help others. You are caring and (...). You are surrounded by grief (...) but that was your past, see how it's to the left of the King? And you are moving away from the pain and hurt."
Next row had the (reminiscing about the past, daydreaming) the three of Swords and the queen of Pentacles. (10 of Cups)
"You miss your previous life with your wife and daughter. You were happy and fulfilled. You can't quite stop reminiscing of the past, it brings you comfort."
"I didn't tell you what my question was."
But the sadness in his voice, even though subtle, was loud and clear. A muted cry of despair, silenced by his own strength.
"What was your question?"
He let his head rest on my shoulder.
"I don't need to repeat it, you and the cards can see through."
"What happened, with your wife?" I wanted to regret my question but i didn't find it in me to.
"She was bored." A whisper, a cry out to who waned to hear his side. "I had used her to fancy parties and cocktails, varnishes and somewhat big shots, celebrities. I created a monster."
I didn't move and fought myself violently to not drop judgmental bombs.
"I'm a sculptor, an artist." He thought good to give me context. "You known how those things go, you must have seen some in movies. It's exactly like that. Fancy gowns and dresses, tailored suits, expensive jewelry, whispered secrets, enough compliments to drunken Satan himself, luxury left, right and center, connections. So and So is the proprietor of this or that estate in the mountains or near a lake, would love to have us over for brunch and discuss a custom piece. And it's a beautiful illusion that hides unforgiving, merciless sharp teeth."
I could just about taste and swallow the sour regret, the sharp burn as I was heaeinf out his long held truth.
"She had made herself a diamond river necklace of wealthy influencial friends. And soon enough I was relegated to the position of mere key to open even more influencial doors. She wanted a bigger house to show off our wealth and prestige. A loft in the capital. I didn't share her views. I wanted our daughter to grow up in a healthy environment, rocked by ocean sounds, eat healthy local foods, be grounded."
He sighed.
"Enough rambling of things long gone and past."
"I guess, but, I have learned that keeping stuff inside is not more efficient or helpful." I nudged and awaited the (sword movement back) realizing I been holding things back myself.
"Like you not fully letting your pain out to be examined and healed."
What did I say!
"We have nothing in common. He's secretive, not much of his personal life is out there to be looked at. I, on the other hand, I am too open, apparently I open my soul and heart. He speaks with his voice, I speak with the silence of written words."
Can you get any more... I dunno, vague?
Yeah, sure! Gimme a sec.
"Oh ans he's a YouTuber and I'm a fan, so, already there it starts off all sorts of wrong."
"Why?" He asked, dumbfounded as if it otherwise wouldn't have any substantial impact.
"Because it comes off as me leeching off his success or wanting somerhing of the sort. And I never had any interest in that. The only thing I demand and require of men whom has sparked fires in my heart is help in my sleeping process and inspiration for my writing."
He hugged me tight and dropped a few more kisses on my neck. Sven, I swear, if you continue like that, we'll be sooner than later entangled naked and on the floor... And I'm not entirely against the potential of that.
The very last row had five cards spread out and I wondered why or what had been happened in his thought process.
"What was your last question and why five cards?"
A hand finally sneaked under the hoodie. I thought he'd never have the nerve to, but he remained a perfect gentleman, only gently brushing my side.
"What do the cards tell, overall?" He whispered in my ear and the warmth of his breath made me wish I was naked under some heavy duvet with him. I wanted his skin, his breath, his energy, his warmth against mine, in me.
Is this a trick question?
The Devil was surrounded by (sex cards)
"Well, what ever you asked, it's... Very mixed." I interpreted the overall theme, not wanting to project my own intentions in the cards.
"The central card, the Devil is about (...) the (...) on the left... Give me a clue, Sven. Is this card representing the past? A person?"
"Not the past." He picked up the (...) Maybe the girl who this reading concerns."
"So then the card to the right would be you?"
"Would it make sense?"
"Yes. The emperor is a mature, family man. And you see this Hierophant, he stands for traditional values, whereas the (...) on her or my side is about walking on the dirt paths, bringing new energies and practices or non standard things to what ever your question was. Overall, a healthy mix of standard practices sprinkled with some more playful.. " I wanted to say naughty, but only a suspicion was my guarantee.
"What ate your plans for this afternoon?" He asked as I was stacking my cards ready for a random shuffle.
"I don't know... Wait for the rain to calm down and head home unless you have a better offer."
"You are already home." He corrected. "And we could upgrade our position for the sofa. Netflix and chill, as you younglings say."

Dragon Quest: Where to Start
Introduction
The “where do i start” question is asked quite frequently on /r/dragonquest and the main FB fangroup, so i assumed i’d make my own list.
I’m gonna compile each game that has been released outside of Japan into this post and give their most important features of each version available -at least- in English so anyone can see the differences and choose according to their needs or preferences.
Note 1: To mark in which languages is available each release, i’m gonna put these next to its platform: (E) = English; (F) = French; (G) = German; (I) = Italian; (S) = Spanish. “EFIGS” may only apply to the EU version, though.
Note 2: Some things might not be 100% accurate, I’m just a slime, sluurp 🙇🏻🙏.
Note 3: Games with only one version available in English (or Multi-5) will get this message in the recommendation: “There’s only a version.”. Games in which you can choose the gender of the main characters will include this sentence in its info: “In this game, you can choose the gender of the main character.”.
Note 4: Reminder about the Roman numerals (just in case): I = 1, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4, V = 5 , VI = 6, VII = 7, VIII = 8, IX = 9, X=10 and XI = 11.
Note 5: The post-2006 releases use lots of puns, jokes, and accents. It’s a characteristic of the series, as are the title alliterations (ie: Chapters of the Chosen, Luminaries of the Legendary Line, etc), the black and white menus, or the classic main theme, etc. Most of the post-2010 releases use visible encounters as well. As for now, there seems to be no turning back.
I’ll be skipping games that require fan-translation (I only mention them, but I highly prefer officially released titles).
↳ Aside from this, i am aware US Gamer made a similar list (click here).
⚠️ BEWARE: This post is HUGE. ⚠️
What is Dragon Quest?
Dragon Quest is a JRPG franchise developed by Enix (now Square Enix). The series is very traditional, in various aspects, the most notorious being the turn-based encounters and the encouragement to explore every corner. The main staff behind the series is: Yuji Horii (Scenario), Akira Toriyama (Art) and Koichi Sugiyama (Music). DQ first started 31 years ago in Japan, in May of 1986. A few years later, in 1989, it was first released in North America, but due to copyright issues with “Dungeons & Dragons”, Enix had to change the name to “Dragon Warrior”. After the Square Enix merger in 2003, they could finally solve the naming issue and, starting with the eighth entry in the main series, in 2005, DQ was finally getting called “Dragon Quest” in North America. One year later, in 2006, the series was introduced in Europe with that same game, Dragon Quest VIII (prior to that, only one spinoff had came to Europe). Since then, many remakes, re-releases, and spinoffs came to the West, even with some years of silence between 2011 and 2014. In 2017 we’re getting Dragon Quest VIII for 3DS (in January) and Dragon Quest Heroes II for PS4 and Steam (in April). ---
It should be noted DQ is a very special JRPG series, and most of its narrative comes from NPCs or books. This series really encourages the player to explore everything and to talk to everyone. That might be the only way to get clues of what to do next. Aside from that, in the games that it’s available, the Party Chat feature is also one of the most reliable features you’ll find in these games. Party chat lets your party members give you their opinions and comment on lots of different things that happen in the game -from the reaction they get after talking to a NPC, to their reaction after an important cutscene-, and they might also give you tips and remind you of what you have to do next. Aside from that, it’s a great tool to see the personalities of your characters. That said, do not come to this series expecting lots of pre-rendered cutscenes and lots of flashy action, this series is not about that (there is some, of course, but not as many as in other JRPGs). As i said a bit earlier, DQ is very special for other things too. The combat is always turn-based in the main series (except in the MMO) and the dialogue is usually full of puns and jokes. Unlike many other series, almost all the games have the same quality and its a highly consistent series, due to the main creators always being the same (Mr Yuji Horii, Mr Koichi Sugiyama and Mr Akira Toriyama). What you need to know about the other works of these three gentlemen: Horii created one of the games that inspired Hideo Kojima that videogames could offer interesting stories (”The Portopia Serial Murder Incident”); Sugiyama has been composed many classic music and worked on various 70s Japanese tv shows such as “The Return for Ultraman”; and AKira Toriyama is a worldwide known manga artist, mainly for his two masterpieces: Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball.
↳ For more information about the series, check its Wikipedia article.
Where to start? @liquidmetalslime’s choices
NOTE: Okay, let me be clear, in this block i’ll talk about what are the best entry points IN MY OPINION, as the title clearly say.
To start playing the series, the best three entry points in the main series are IV (4) , VIII (8) and XI (11). The first one can be played in English on NES and Mobile and in Multi-5/EFIGS on DS. The second one can be played in English and French on Mobile and EFIGS on PS2 and 3DS. The third one will be available on PS4 and PC in Multi-5 later this year; sometime in the future also on Switch.
- IV is divided in chapters and features a highly likeable cast -specifically a certain Tsarevna. Each chapter is unique and follows a specific set of characters, who will later meet in the fifth and longest chapter. This story is quite tragic and is best enjoyed on the remakes of the game, since these remakes include a sixth chapter that gives an insight in the motives that drove the villain to do what he did. If you want to play in English and get its best version to date, the mobile (iOS/Android) version is the one. If you want to play using physical buttons or in French, German, Spanish or Italian, the (EU) DS release is for you. The DS/Mobile remakes use lots of puns and accents (the NES version doesn’t), and that can be bothersome until you get used to it, but it’s worth it (and I personally love it, except in the first chapter while playing in English. I didn’t have any issue while playing in Spanish). This is the one that gave me an obsession made me a DQ fan.
- VIII on the other hand, focuses a lot more on a major plot and its characters. Due to that, it is the easiest DQ to jump in if you already like other JRPG series. Given its artstyle and big scale of its world, it gives a great sense of adventure (its actually not that big, but it feels huge). As IV, VIII’s characters are regarded as some of the best in the whole series, specially Yangus and Trode. As in IV, the remake gives us some more information about the villain and his motives. If you value content and quality of life improvements over looks, the 3DS version is the definitive version. Otherwise, if you prefer prettier graphics, go for the PS2 version. The 3DS version is what i consider its best version to date, and its the easiest to find nowadays, besides the Mobile port.
- XI is an interesting title because despite being full of throwbacks and -maybe- connections to the older games, it introduces many quality-of-life improvements into the usual mechanics of the series. On top of that, has a killer soundtrack, composed with brand new songs (which some will say that are weaker) and a whole lot of classic songs from all the main games. And to round up the package, it also has gorgeous graphics. The cast is likeable, the story is interesting, the gag moments are nice, the sad moments are touching (i personally thought Horii couldn’t outdo himself after V, but boy i was wrong). It has a lot to like, and little to dislike. The real shame about this game is that we -apparently- won’t be getting the 3DS version.
Aside from these three games, the other main titles might be a good point to start too, but some might have give some trouble, for example:
I and II: (Terribly) Outdated. II is also the hardest game in the whole series, and its NES version is quite unbalanced at the final parts of the game. The devs even admitted in an interview that they couldn’t balance it properly because they couldn’t delay the game.
III and VII: These are better enjoyed if you have played some of the previous games, for example III is better enjoyed with knowledge of I and II (of their story, i mean), and VII with knowledge of what to expect from the game (how DQ’s narrative usually works, how the battles work, etc) as well as knowing a bit about VI’s mechanics.
V: Probably the top of the series, but I feel it’s not as DQ-newbie-friendly as IV and VIII. Still a solid game.
VI: Love it or hate it experience.
IX: It’s quite different from the other games since it focuses a lot more on character customization (there are no pre-made characters, besides some that are acquired in some postgame DLC quests), so it might give a wrong idea of what the series is like. It is a lovely game, though.
Other notes:
III, VI, VII and IX (and X, but that’s Japan-only for now) use class systems.
Outside the main series, in my opinion, the best entry points might also be:
- Dragon Quest Monsters 1 and 2 (better known as Dragon Warrior Monsters 1 and 2). Charming monster collecting games. The first one features Terry, originally from DQVI, on his quest to win the Starry Night Tournament, while the second one features two original characters (Tara & Coby) on a quest to save their new island. DQM2/DWM2 comes in two versions. In one you play as Tara and in the other as Coby. Might be a bit outdated, but they’re quite fun games. I feel like they’re better than the other monster-catching games of that era, at least technically.
- Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2. The most recent Monsters game we got. Has a quite deep synthesis system and it’s quite intuitive. Also has a large amount of beasts. Could feel a bit clunky and slow to play nowadays, though.
- Dragon Quest Builders. Easy to play and with really charming aspects. Has a long story and huge replay value, as each time the player can build their base differently. It has been called “the Minecraft for those who don’t like Minecraft”, due to it being more guided that the mentioned game. It has some connections to the first three games in the series, but can be enjoyed without previous knowledge of the series. If you had to choose a DQ spinoff, choose this one. Don’t think of it as a “Minecraft with DQ skins”. There’s a Minecraft mod for that, this is quite different.
Games & Releases: Versions that have been released in the West
In this huge block, we’re gonna look at each game, its western releases (trying to cover both NA-only and NA/EU/AUS releases), the features each re-release (if any) has in comparison to the first English/Western version, and my recommendations for each game.
Dragon Quest I
Info: Old JRPG with very simple mechanics. It is the first console JRPG out there (almost a year and a half earlier than Final Fantasy 1!). The story is quite simple (save the princess and defeat the bad guy) and the gameplay is very bare bones, but still an enjoyable game. It’s also really short, can be beaten in about 6 hours if you’re fast.
Versions and features:
- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest I · II (SFC), 1993; Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Collection (Wii), 2011. [There is a fantranslation for the SFC remake.]
- Dragon Warrior for NES (E)
Old DW translation. (Besides DW glossary, it uses a lot of Old English.)
The graphics might be too outdated for some.
Quite grindy.
- Dragon Warrior 1 · 2 for GBC (E)
Remade DW translation.
Enhanced (yet simpler) graphics.
Better balancing.
There is a prologue scene.
- Dragon Quest I for iOS and Android (E)
New DQ translation (still uses Old English, but with the newer DQ glossary).
Brighter, more colorful world, but poorly upscaled graphics. (Because its a port of an old mobile port they did in the mid 2000s, but fitted into a way higher screen)
Even better balancing.
No prologue scene.
My recommendation: “Dragon Quest I” for iOS and Android (E). Why?: It’s simply the best version: better graphics, music, translation and balancing (meaning less grinding).
The Mobile port is the only version available in Europe, btw.
Dragon Quest II
Info: Second game in the series. Adds extra two party members there can be various monsters on battle, there’s also a ship and a waaaay bigger world (the world of DQ1 is just a small part of the one in DQ2). That said, it is worth noting the original version of this game was quite rushed and the end-game areas are quite unbalanced. The story is quite simple too: An evil mage named Hargon plans on destroying the world and starts by attacking the kingdom of Moonbrooke. The princes of Midenhall and Cannock reunite with their lost cousin from Moonbrooke to stop Hargon.
Versions and features:
- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest I · II (SFC), 1993; Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Collection (Wii), 2011. [There is a fantranslation for the SFC remake.]
- Dragon Warrior II for NES (E)
Old DW translation. (Besides DW glossary, it uses a lot of Old English.)
The graphics might be too outdated for some.
Quite grindy, specially in end-game areas. (Enix admitted they couldn’t balance the last areas of the game due to time constrains.)
- Dragon Warrior 1 · 2 for GBC (E)
Remade DW translation.
Enhanced (yet simpler) graphics.
Better balancing.
New intro scene.
- Dragon Quest II Luminaries of the Legendary Line for iOS and Android (E)
New DQ translation.
Brighter, more colorful world, but poorly upscaled graphics. (Same reason as DQ1-Mobile).
Even better balancing.
Prologue scene.
Limitations to avoid players venture into the most dangerous dungeon unprepared.
My recommendation: “Dragon Quest II Luminaries of the Legendary Line” for iOS and Android (E). Why?: It is the best version: better looks, sound, translation and balancing.
The Mobile port is the only version available in Europe, btw.
Dragon Quest III
Info: First DQ game to feature a class system, which was supported by a personality system thus making almost every character unique. This game also features some big plot twists and even larger areas to explore. DQ3 also ends the Erdrick/Loto trilogy. The story follows the offspring of a great hero (Ortega) and their quest to finish what their disappeared father started: to defeat the evil Baramos. In this game, you can choose the gender of the main character. (Note: And the gender of any character you create.)
Versions and features:
- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest III (SFC), 1996; Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Collection (Wii), 2011. [There is a fantranslation for the SFC remake.]
- Dragon Warrior III for NES (E)
Old DW translation. (Besides DW glossary, it uses a bit of old english.)
The graphics might be too outdated for some.
- Dragon Warrior 3 for GBC (E)
Remade DW translation.
Enhanced (yet simpler) graphics.
Pachisi/T’n’T minigame.
Monster animations.
2 bonus dungeons: the one added in the SFC remake and a brand new one.
Monster medals.
- Dragon Quest III Seeds of Salvation for iOS and Android (E)
New DQ translation. (There are some areas that still use Old English).
No Pachisi/T’n’T minigame, nor Monster Animations nor Monster Medals.
Brighter, more colorful world, but (somewhat) poorly upscaled graphics. (Same reason as DQ1-Mobile).
1 bonus dungeon: the one added in the SFC remake.
My recommendation: This is a hard choice, but it is between “Dragon Warrior 3” for GBC (E) and “Dragon Quest III Seeds of Salvation” for iOS and Android (E). Why?: The GBC version has a lot more content, but the Smartphone version has a newer DQ-style translation and better graphics. Many will say the SFC remake is better, but i love monster medals and the official translations 🤷♀️
The Mobile port is the only version available in Europe, btw.
Note about the Erdrick Trilogy (I - III): This trilogy is better enjoyed when played in order (DQ -> DQII -> DQIII).
Dragon Quest IV
Info: First game of the Zenithian trilogy (which is loosely connected). First -and only- DQ game to be told in chapters so far. Each one follows different people, and in the fifth, they all meet to fulfill their roles al the chosen ones. Here, instead of having generic characters with classes, we have set (and very charismatic) characters who learn a specific sets of spells and skills. In this game, you can choose the gender of the main character.
The overall story focuses on a demon who loves a lovely elf and hates human for how they treat elves, monsters and dwarves. The party must stop this demon, Psaro, from awakening the demon lord and destroying the world.
Versions and features:
- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest IV (PS1), 2001.
- Dragon Warrior IV for NES (E)
Old DW translation.
Completely 2D.
- Dragon Quest IV: (The) Chapters of the Chosen for DS (EFIGS)
New DQ translation.
Prologue chapter.
No party-chat. (It was added in the Japanese remake, and was mostly translated by the release date, but SQEX decided to not put it for some reason)
2.5D, since it uses DQVII’s PS1 style.
- Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen for iOS and Android (E)
DQ translation.
Prologue chapter.
Has party chat.
2.5D.
My recommendation: Depends, but choose one from the latter two. Why?: If you want to play in French, Spanish, Italian or German, go for the DS release. If you want to enjoy the party chat feature, for for the Smartphone release. The party chat seems pointless but it actually gives a lot of characterization to the party members.
Dragon Quest V
Info: Second game of the Zenithian trilogy. In this particular game, the story follows a young man through his (painful) life: from his childhood to his adulthood. DQ5 was one of the first games ever to let players recruit monsters to join their team (which, some years after its release, and after the success of Pokémon, inspired the birth of “Dragon Quest Monsters”). It also allows choosing a wife (well, it forces the player to choose one, since it is related to the plot): Bianca, the childhood friend; Nera, the sweetheart from a good family; or Debora, the passionate sister of Nera. This game has probably the best story in the whole series.
Versions and features:
- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest V (SFC), 1992; Dragon Quest V (PS2), 2004. [There are fantranslations for these two titles.]
- Dragon Quest V: (The) Hand of the Heavenly Bride for DS (EFIGS)
- Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride for iOS and Android (E)
Some slight tweaks.
The two versions of this game we got are quite similar, except some small balancing and changes of MP cost. Both feature DQ-style localization (it’s the same for both versions), a new bride not present in the original SFC release nor PS2 remake (Debora), a few more monsters of newer games (like DQVIII’s Jailcat) and some other tweaks.
My recommendation: Doesn’t matter. Why?: Both are pretty much the same, choose according to your wallet or control preferences. I’d choose DS though, since the mobile port can be buggy in some phones (and due to multi-5 too).
The NES version only released in North America, btw.
Dragon Quest VI
Info: Third and last game of the Zenithian trilogy (First, chronologically). In this game the party travels between two worlds: reality and dream world. There are two extra “worlds”: underwater and the dread realm. In this game, there’s a class system quite different from III, since the classes of VI aren’t tied to the character’s level but to the number of battles won, with 8 levels of mastery (8 stars = mastered the class).
The story is about a group of young people who are off to fight the evil demon who rules the dreams and treats the land (Murdaw). But there’s more, the game is about traveling between worlds and solving problems and fighting the Dreadfiends.
Versions and features:
- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest VI (SFC), 1995. [There is a fantranslation for this title.]
- Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation / Reverie for DS (EFIGS)
- Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation for iOS and Android (E)
Better balanced and a few tweaks.
The two versions of the game we got are pretty similar, so there’s only these two differences: controls and enhanced balancing (for example, Terry joins with a few more classes mastered). Both feature the same graphic style, the same DQ-style translation and the same music.
My recommendation: Doesn’t matter. Why?: Both are pretty much the same, choose according to your wallet or control preferences. I’d choose DS though, since the mobile port can be buggy in some phones (and due to multi-5 too). The SFC version is objectively better (better atmosphere, much prettier graphics, can recruit monsters like in V), but it doesn’t have an official translation and the fan-translation covers 95% of it (but you can beat the main story, though).
Note about the Zenithian Trilogy (IV - VI): This trilogy, unlike Erdrick’s trilogy, is loosely connected. Only a few elements connect the games, so they can be played as individual experiences. A few details in VI imply the cronological order is different from the release order.
Dragon Quest VII
Info: Longest entry in the series. It is also the only DQ game with time-travel so far. The story is divided in islands, each of which is unlocked after completing a small puzzle made of shards/fragments. This game features the class system from VI, but extended.
The story starts in the only island in the world, but with the help of Prince Kiefer and Maribel, the player unravels the mysteries of an eerie abandoned shrine, which transports them into another island in the past. The party must solve the problems of the islands in the past to save the islands in the present, and learn what happened with the world and how can they fix it.
Versions and features:
- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest VII (iOS/Android), 2015.
- Dragon Warrior VII: Warriors of Eden for PS1 (E)
Old DW translation.
2.5D.
Only an NPC can help you find shards/fragments.
Better puzzles at the beginning.
- Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past for 3DS (EFIGS)
New DQ translation.
Fully 3D.
There are many ways to find fragments: a radar, a fairy npc, a menu option...
Dumbed down puzzles at the beginning.
Faster class mastering and better balanced class system (making the monster classes relevant).
Traveller tablets / free DLC tablets.
The JP version of the 3DS remake uses orchestral soundtrack, but the Western version doesn’t. It can be restored with a hacked 3DS, apparently. The Western release also added some lag in the menus.
My recommendation: “Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past” for 3DS (EFIGS). Why?: Firstly because of the multi-5 text, but also for the QoL improvements, specifically the faster class mastering and fragment radar.
Btw, the 3DS version is the only one in Europe.
Note: There is a patch for the 3DS that adds the orchestral soundtrack. (You need a CFW on your 3DS.)
Dragon Quest VIII
Info: First fully-3D (non-remake) game of the series. It had various changes: firstly, the story focused on a main plot. Secondly, each character had a few learning paths, which could be followed by allocating Skill Points, earned by leveling up, and that at certain milestones would teach them new skills, spells and passive bonuses. Other changes include the Monster Arena (which plays a bit like the Dragon Quest Monsters arenas), having orchestral music ingame and voice acting (these two things were only present in the western PS2 version), having the alchemy pot and some more innovations.
The story follows a young guard and a bandit, who are helping a cursed king and his daughter to catch the culprit of their curse. They follow him around the world, finding some interesting partners along the way.
Versions and features:
- Dragon Quest VIII: (The) Journey of the Cursed King for PS2 (EFIGS)
Voice acting.
Orchestrated music.
“Beautiful” but slow menus.
Pink super saiyan. (This was introduced in the western releases to get the attention of DBZ fans.)
Pretty graphics.
- Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King for iOS and Android (EF)
Instant alchemy.
Portrait mode only.
No voice acting nor orchestrated music.
- Dragon Quest VIII: (The) Journey of the Cursed King for 3DS (EFIGS)
New playable characters, scenarios (& optional endings), items, and dungeons (one is post-game, the other is optional before ending the game).
Instant alchemy.
Voice acting.
No orchestral soundtrack. (It’s present in the JP version, and afaik it can be restored with a CFW 3DS.)
Classic DQ menus.
Alternative outfits for everyone, not just 2 characters.
New camera mode & quests.
There are some small changes made by SQEX Japan so the game would keep the same rating it got on the PS2 years ago (For All Ages). Nothing game changing.
Free DLC items.
Some re-balancing.
Speed-up option for battles.
On New 3DS, the C-stick can be used to rotate the camera. (There is no performance improvement on N3DS.)
My recommendation: “Dragon Quest VIII: (The) Journey of the Cursed King” for 3DS (EFIGS). Why?: The improvements, QoL enhancements and new features make it worth it despite it being inferior graphically to its PS2 original release. The music change doesn’t affect you a lot if you do not play using headphones. Also, the “censorship” is irrelevant since Jessica is 17 and the two other scenes don’t change that much anyway. If that’s your main concern, I may suggest you check your priorities, my dude. 🤷♂️
Note: There are patches for the 3DS version that give Jessica her PS2 outfits and put the orchestral soundtrack in. (You need a CFW on your 3DS.)
Dragon Quest IX
Info: In some aspects this game is a throwback to Dragon Quest III. The player can customize the party, their aspect and their equipment. It mixes DQIII’s classes and VIII’s skill trees. As VIII, it also has (instant) alchemy. This is the first main DQ game that allows playing with friends (up to 4, in local multiplayer). Unlike almost all the other games (except I and III), there aren’t set characters in this game*. In this game, you can choose the gender of the main character. (Note: And the gender of any character you create). IX has tons of throwbacks and cameos from the other heroes (as Inn Guests and costumes) and villains (as Bosses) from the main series and a character from DQ Swords.
*There ARE some set characters, but to be able to get them you need to have access to the DLC quests (the DS and Wii servers are dead right now, so you need to edit your file or connect with someone who has them unlocked) and have beaten the main story.
The story in this game follows a young celestrian (a guardian angel, basically) in their quest to find out what happened to their realm. They must travel around the world, helping as many people as possible while getting clues of what or who is responsable for the fall of their land.
Versions and features:
- Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies for DS (EFIGS)
My recommendation: There is only the one version of this title. Its best enjoyed with friends, and/or if you like roleplaying/creating your own characters.
Dragon Quest XI
Info: Return to the classic formula after the multiplayer-focused IX and X.
The story focuses on a boy, who is the reincarnation of a Hero, who is acused of being “the demon’s child”. He has to escape and unravel the mysteries regarding this “demon’s child / hero’s child” controversy with a cast of great characters.
The most interesting part about this title was how it was made in three different styles: 2D, “chibi” 3D and full-scale 3d. The first one, tries to emulate the graphics of the original DQ6 and the SFC remake of DQ3; the second one tries to go for the aesthetic of DQ9 and the remake of DQ7; and the third one gives us the logical step after DQ8. The first two modes are only present on the Japan-only 3DS version, while the later is present in all the UE4 versions (PS4, PC and probably Switch). As each of them tries to emulate a different era of the series, there are gameplay mechanics that change. For instance, when playing in 2D mode (3DS), the items won’t have an image when looking at the inventory. Meanwhile, they will while playing in 3D (3DS). Or the way boomerang works: in the 3DS version, they hit from left to right, like in previous titles; while on the UE4 versions the player can choose which enemy it should hit first. (Since the 3DS version is staying Japan-only i’ll avoid making more comparisons to it.)
Official site
Versions and features: - Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (3DS, 2017)
- Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age for PS4
- Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age for PC / Steam
Same version as on PS4
Probably more resolution and fps
Probably mods
- Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age for Switch
???
Nobody knows anything about it so far, except it’s confirmed for all regions.
My recommendation: Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age for PS4 or PC. Why?: So far, we’re only getting “one version” on two platforms, so it’s up to the player to decide their platform of choice. I’d personally choose PS4 because the game was designed with a PS4 in mind. If you can read japanese, the 3DS version is also a great option. I personally prefer it to the UE4 version.
And that’s all for the main series.
Dragon Quest X is a MMO for Wii, Wii U, PC, 3DS and Mobile, which will be soon available for PS4 and Switch in Japan. There are no plans for a Western release of this game for now. (There is a western localization campaign, started on October 2016. @imutone recently started a complementary campaign to send physical letters to SQEX. Here’s the latest update on the campaign. Make sure to join it!)
Now, lets move to the Spinoffs:
Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland
Info: Inspired by DQV’s monster recruitment feature and Pokémon’s success, this was the first attempt to make a Monster-Catching DQ game. It features Terry and Milly (called Milayou in the old DWM translation) from DQVI as the protagonists (Note: Only Terry is playable, Milly is a secondary character).
In this game, you have to travel worlds to get stronger monsters to be able to win in the Starry Night tournament, which grants a wish to its winner, and save your kidnapped sister.
Versions and features:
- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest Monsters 1 · 2 (PS1), 2002; Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland 3D (3DS), 2012. [There is fantranslation for this remake.]
- Dragon Warrior Monsters for GBC (E)
Randomly generated dungeons.
All monsters can follow you, up to 3 at a time.
3 vs 3 battles.
Hundreds of DQ monsters, either from DQI-VI or new.
My recommendation: There is only the one version available for us.
Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Tara’s Adventure / Coby’s Journey
Info: In this sequel, they went the monster catching Pokémon way: two versions with exclusive monsters. Each version offers a protagonist: The young Tara, or her older brother Coby. This game offered monster trade.
In these games, you have to travel between worlds to save your new home, an island, while becoming a better monster master.
Versions and features:
- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest Monsters 1 · 2 (PS1), 2002; Dragon Quest Monsters 2 (3DS), 2014.
- Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 for GBC (E)
Comes in two packages: Tara’s Adventure and Coby’s Journey. In the first one you play as a girl (Tara) and in the other as a boy (Coby). They’re sibilings.
Set worlds. (Not randomly-generated as in DQM1.)
All monsters can follow you (all have sprites), up to 3 at a time.
3 vs 3 battles.
Hundreds of DQ monsters, either from DQI-VII or new.
Local multiplayer.
My recommendation: There is only the one version available for us.
There was DQM game for GBA, Caravan Heart, which was Japan-only. Quite different from the first two DQM/DWM games, but as DQM1/DWM1, it has a child version of a character of the main series as the protagonist: Kiefer from VII. [There is a fantranslation for this game.]
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
Info: This is a reboot of the DQM formula. Coming after the Japan-only DQM Caravan Heart that mixed DQVII’s monster hearts with the DQM formula, Joker tried something new, but in a similar direction of the GBC classics. In this game, the young monster scout must get stronger to become a master monster scout and also unfold the mystery of the Incarnus, a singular monster.
Versions and features:
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker for DS (EFIGS)
Monster from DQI-VIII, or new.
3 vs 3 battles.
New and updated mechanics (the skill system is inspired by VIII’s).
Local and Wifi multiplayer (Note: As of 2014, Nintendo shut down the DS and Wii servers).
My recommendation: There is only the one version of this game.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2
Info: Carries over many mechanics from Joker, but improves them. The biggest improvement is in the UI, which later became the base for all the 3DS DQM games and remakes. The story follows a young monster scout whose airship crushes into a mysterious island and how he and his team of monsters unfolds the mystery of the island to get back to civilization.
Versions and features:
- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest Joker 2 Professional (DS), 2011. [There is a fantranslation for this title.]
- Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 for DS (EFIGS)
Over 300 monster, mostly from DQI-IX, or new.
3 vs 3 battles.
DQMJ’s mechanics and UI updated and vastly improved.
Local and Wifi multiplayer (Note: As of 2014, Nintendo shut down the DS and Wii servers).
(Local) Connectivity with DQVI and IX for DS for special monsters from those games.
My recommendation: There is only the one version available for us.
There’s a third Joker game for 3DS, called “Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3” in Japan, released in April 2016. Said game got a “Professional” version with various enhancements and new monsters in early February 2017. As of March 2017, none of the 3DS DQM games has been announced for the West.
Dragon Quest: Torneko no Daibouken 2
Info: Second DQ Mystery Dungeon game, and as the first one (which only released in Japan), it follows the famous merchant from DQIV: Torneko Taloon.
In this title, players must outthink enemies who are often faster or stronger than them, efficiently using weapons and magic when the odds are against them. What's more, in order to succeed they will also test the limits of Torneko's insatiable appetite.
Versions and features:
- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest: Torneko no Daibouken 2 (GBA), 2001.
- World of Dragon Warrior: Torneko: The Last Hope for PS1 (E)
Play as Torneko.
It is the only Mystery Dungeon game set in the DQ universe we got.
This game uses randomly-generated dungeons.
My recommendation: There is only the one version available for us.
There were two other games of this series available in Japan: one for SFC (which was the first DQ spinoff and the first Mystery Dungeon game ever created) and another for PS2 and GBA. There is a fourth DQ Mystery Dungeon game, which doesn’t focus on Torneko anymore, but on the childhood of DQVIII’s Yangus and Red. This is Japan-only too.
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
Info: This is the second entry of the “Slime MoriMori” series. It got its American release in 2005. There are tank battles aside from the regular “slime vs the world” fights. This was the last DQ game to get released in America but not in Europe.
It is an action game in which we control a Slime called Rocket, who has to fight the Plattypunks to save the slime town of Boingburg.
Versions and features:
- Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime for DS (E) [Trailer]
Play as a slime (named Rocket)!
Tank Battles.
Lots of puns.
My recommendation: There is only the one version.
The other games in this subseries are Japan-only, as well as its manga. The first game (GBA) doesn’t have tank battles, and the third one (3DS) replaces them with ship battles.
Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors
Info: First person on-rails action game. The Wii’s nunchuck works as your shield and the Wiimote acts as your Sword. All the major characters are named after swords, like Claymore or Fleurette. In this game, you have to save the kingdom of Avalonia from an evil demon named Xiphos.
Versions and features:
- Dragon Quest Swords for Wii (EFIGS) [Trailer]
On rails.
Use the Wiimote as your sword and the Nunchuk as your shield.
Likeable support cast.
My recommendation: There is only a version of this game.
Dragon Quest Wars
Info: A small turn-based strategy game for DSi. Think of it as a light mix of chess and Fire Emblem (not really, but its not 100% chess either).
Versions and features:
- Dragon Quest Wars for DSi (EFIGS) [Trailer]
Multiplayer: Up to 4 players.
Use some DQ monsters as your units.
My recommendation: There is only one version of this game. As the DS servers got shut down in 2014, so the only way to get it nowadays is using a 3DS.
Honestly? I wouldn’t recommend spending a cent on this.
Fortune Street / Boom Street
Info: First “Itadaki Street” game to release outside Japan. This is the second game in the Itadaki Street series to mix Dragon Quest with Super Mario Bros. The gameplay is a bit of a mix of Mario Party, DQ’s Treasures n' Trapdoors (T’n’T) and the classic boardgame Monopoly.
Versions and features:
- Fortune Street / Boom Street for Wii (EFIGS) [Trailer]
Play as characters from the main series like Slime, Dragonlord, Alena or Patty; and characters from the Super Mario Bros universe such as Peach, Luigi, Donkey Kong or Waluigi.
Multiplayer up to 4 players.
Wifi modes. (Note: As of 2014, Nintendo shut down the DS and Wii servers).
My recommendation: There is only the one version.
Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below
Info: First entry in the action-based Heroes subseries. It is a collaboration with Dynasty Warriors creator Tecmo Koei. This was also the first DQ for a gaming device to come West between 2011 and 2015, quite an honor! In this game, you can choose the gender of the main character. (Note: You can choose between Luceus and Aurora, but the one you don’t choose is still playable, the one you choose will be always in your party).
It a mix of Dragon Quest mechanics with Dynasty Warrior mechanics: parties of 4 characters, MP, tension, tons of enemies, just a handful of attacks per character... Story-wise is a quite simple light vs darkness story.
Monsters who were peaceful have started attacking humans. The player, the captain of the kingdom’s army have to find out why, battling hordes of monsters in the way.
Versions and features:
- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest Heroes (PS3), 2015.
- Dragon Quest Heroes for PS4 (EFIGS) [Trailer]
Stable framerate.
Can’t get all the preorder bonuses.
- Dragon Quest Heroes for PC (EFIGS) [Trailer]
Better settings.
Unstable framerate.
My recommendation: The PS4 version. Why?: It was made with the PS4 in mind and has stable framerate. Also, Tecmo Koei’s PC ports are rather infamous...
Dragon Quest Heroes II
Info: Second entry in the action-based Heroes subseries. Doesn’t have any connection with the first one, and fixes or adds what the people wanted in the first game, like a worldmap, (online) multiplayer, or less tower-defense missions.
- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest Heroes II: Twin Kings and the Prophecy's End (PS3, PSV), 2016.
Confirmed versions for the West:
- Dragon Quest Heroes II for PS4 and Steam (EFIGS) [Trailer] (Note: Western release dates: PS4: April 25th in NA and April 28th in EU; Steam: April 22nd in both.)
My recommendation: Still not out in the West, but the PS4 version. Why?: Firstly, Tecmo Koei PC ports are infamous for a reason; secondly, the PS4 version was the main version in Japan (and the one i have already played and enjoyed); and thirdly, because its the only one that has a physical release and that reversible cover is rather cool.
In May 2016, Square Enix released a sequel in Japan called “Dragon Quest Heroes II: Twins Kings and Ending of the Prophecy” for PS3, PS4 and PSV. It includes some upgrades from the feedback they got from the first game, including: having a world map, having multiplayer and being able to have more than four skills per character. On the 1st December 2016, Best Buy leaked its localization. On the 8th of the same month, Square Enix announced the western release dates for the PS4 version: April 25th (NA), and April 28th (EU). A Steam version is also releasing on April 25h (both NA & EU) Square Enix announced on February 22nd 2017. [The Vita version isn’t profitable for SQEX, so they will skip localizing it.] (x). The games’s director hinted to a third game on the PlayStation Awards 2016. (x)
Dragon Quest Builders
Info: “What if you mixed Dragon Quest and Minecraft and got a legit good game?”. In this game, you can choose the gender of the main character. (Note: you can change it and any character customization option anytime you want from the setting accessed from the main menu)
At the last part of DQ1 the player is given a choice. One option lets you continue and the other gives you a game over. DQB explores that option, the story in which the Dragonlord won. You, a builder chosen by the goddess Rubiss, must rebuild the land of Alefgard.
Versions available and features:
- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest Builders: Revive Alefgard (PS3), 2016.
- Dragon Quest Builders for PS4 (EFIGS) [Trailer]
High quality graphics.
Better draw distance.
Better share options (can make videos and up to 4 image in tweets).
- Dragon Quest Builders for PSV (EFIGS) [Trailer]
Digital only (it is only about 270mb, though. The Asian physical release includes English.).
Portability.
Poor sharing options (screenshots with Start + PS Button. If you share it with the twitter app, you can only choose 1 image. If you want to share more than 1 at a time, you have to transfer your screenshots to your computer).
- Dragon Quest Builders for Switch (EFIGS) (*Releases in Spring 2018)
Its more akin to the PS4 version than the PSV version.
Has some exclusive content, like the DQ1 cartdrige work table and the Sabercub mount.
Portable.
My recommendation: Depends on your tastes. Why?: One is great for its portability (Vita) and the other looks way better and has better sharing methods (PS4).
On August 2016, Square Enix stated there were possibilities of this game getting a Nintendo Switch version. (x). (They announced it officially on the 14th of September of 2017. Will release next spring in all regions.) On September of the same year, they said a sequel was being considered. (x). Later, in the PlayStation Awards, they hinted to a sequel again. (x)
Dragon Quest Builders 2 was announced for Switch and PS4 on the 6th of August of 2017, with no release window announced so far.
Definitive version of each game (TL;DR)
Summarizing, this is the list of definitive versions of each DQ game -that got official western releases- again, in my opinions:
Main series:
Dragon Quest I: Mobile
Dragon Quest II: Mobile
Dragon Quest III: GBC OR Mobile (more content vs newer translation)
Dragon Quest IV: DS OR Mobile (more languages vs english party chat)
Dragon Quest V: DS OR Mobile (they have different prices and buttons)
Dragon Quest VI: DS OR Mobile (they have different prices and buttons)
Dragon Quest VII: 3DS
Dragon Quest VIII: 3DS
Dragon Quest IX: DS
Spinoffs:
Dragon Warrior Monsters: GBC
Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: GBC (Any version)
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker: DS
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2: DS
Torneko: The Last Hope: PS1
Rocket Slime: DS (This one didn’t release in EU)
Dragon Quest Swords: Wii
Fortune Street / Boom Street: Wii
Dragon Quest Wars: 3DS (DSi can’t access the internet any more)
Dragon Quest Heroes: PS4
Dragon Quest Builders: PS4 or PSV (higher resolution vs portability)
Dragon Quest Heroes 2: PS4 or Steam (unless the PC port is a bad port)
Soooooo, where should i start? (TL;DR 2)
Choose one of these, but i highly recommend VIII on 3DS.
Dragon Quest IV: DS OR Mobile (more languages vs english party chat)
Dragon Quest VIII: 3DS
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2: DS
Dragon Quest Builders: PS4 or PSV (higher resolution vs portability)

SasuHina - His Beauty and Her Beast Chapter 4
Got nothing to say other than, hope you like it :)
Kim xxx
For 5 days Hinata lay in her bed at the Uchiha mansion, she had a terrible fever and flu. Sakura helped her each morning to wash and change in to some clean pyjama's as she was lethargic and had little energy. She told her Sasuke had been the one who found her, how worried they all were when she hadn't returned and shushed her when Hinata tried to apologise profusely. Throughout the day Sakura would bring up warm meals for her and chat with her until she fell asleep. Hinata had forgotten how reassuring it was to have friends who helped you in time of need, she would have to find a way to thank Sakura and Sasuke.
Naruto and Sasuke came in to her room also to keep the fire going in her room to keep it warm for her, even though she had a fever she could go from being hot and sweating in one minute to freezing the next. Naruto would talk to her happily as he did so, but Sasuke would remain silent concentrating only on the task at hand and walk out her room again.
On the 6th day Hinata was feeling more herself, her body ached but other than that she felt fine. She managed a shower and to change into her own day clothes before Sakura walked in to her room in the morning.
“Oh good.” Sakura smiled at her and lay a tray of tea on the small table. “How are feeling?”
“Better. Thank you, Sakura, for everything.” Hinata placed her book down beside her on the window seat and looked out the window to see Sasuke and Naruto both hard at work.
“I think one more day of rest should do the trick.”
“Really? I was hoping to-”
“Hinata, don't rush it ok.” Sakura advised. Hinata looked to her lap and nodded her head.
For the rest of the day however Hinata organised and cleaned her room. Tidying the draws and getting rid of all the dust, she swept and moped the floor, cleaned the windows, each trinket glistened and shone in the sunlight streaming through the now clean windows.
Hinata happily sang a merry song as she climbed up the bed post to remove the dirty canopy over it.
“Shouldn't you be resting?” Hinata screamed in embarrassment having been caught singing and fell on to her mattress.
“Sasuke?”
“The door was open.” Sasuke smirked at her. “Sakura asked me to bring you up some soup.” He lifted the tray in his hands as evidence, “Naruto got a splinter, you'd think he'd been fatally wounded the way he goes on about it.” Hinata chuckled half heartedly, she didn't want Sasuke to see the hurt his words had her as they bought back the memories of Neji on the battlefield.
“Um Sasuke...I...I wanted to thank you for...well-”
“It's fine.” Sasuke lay the tray with the steaming bowl of soup, some crusty rolls and piping hot tea on it. “I'm er sorry about your cousin. I didn't know he'd passed away.” Sasuke added.
“Oh...thank you.” Hinata looked at her hands in her lap, and quickly changed the subject. “I...I bought you something actually.” She went rummaging through a bag on the floor. “It was a welcome home present, but well...Now it's more of a thank you one I guess.”
“Hn. You mean I don't get two?”
“Don't be greedy, how unbecoming of a clan head.” Hinata joked at Sasuke while handing over a rectangle navy blue box with a red ribbon wrapped around it.
“What is it?”
“Open it to find out.” She sat on the window seat beside him, keeping a large enough gap between them.
“It's not going to explode out at me or anything?”
“No.” Hinata chuckled, “What presents did you get to make you think that?”
“You don't wonna know.”
Sasuke looked down at the carefully tied ribbon and back at the Hyuga in warning.
“I swear it won't explode.” She chuckled.
Sasuke nodded his head and pulled on the ribbon slowly. As a child he'd been given many gifts mainly off fan girls, all of them he'd thrown in the trash straight away. As an adult, he'd never been given a present before, his reputation put fan girls off now thankfully.
This was why with this gift he took great care in opening it, he wanted to cherish the feeling of opening something. He was aware of the Hyuga watching him and grateful that she allowed him to take his time. If Naruto was beside him he'd no doubt of snatched the gift out of his hands by now and unwrapped it for him. Taking the lid off the navy box Sasuke smiled at the cream book with a black circle and red eye in it's centre.
“The fellowship of the ring.” Sasuke pulled the book from the box.
“To start your reading adventure.” Hinata smiled. “I hope you like it, I saw it when I went shopping with Hanabi.”
“I'm sure I will. Thank you Hinata.”
“Di-Did you just say me by my name?”
“Yeah, it sounded weird, don't be expecting me to say it again.” Sasuke tried to joke. He looked around the room feeling the awkward atmosphere between them. Social interaction was not his strong suit. “Looks good in here.” Sasuke commented trying to fill the gap. “Needs decorating though.” He pointed to a corner where some of the wallpaper was coming away.
“We can concentrate on down stairs first, I think. The kitchen is beautiful, nothing needs changing in there. Maybe a few modern touches here and there, add your own preferences to the sitting room and such.”
“We?”
“Well...If you want...I mean... I decorated my own room back home and-”
“Ok.” Hinata smiled at Sasuke's easy response and leant back against the window.
“Outside looks much better.” She commented.
“It's getting there. I was thinking of hiring a gardener, get it ready for this stupid ball. How about a maze? Then I can tell the old council members to go in there and hope they get lost.” Hinata laughed at Sasuke's mischievous smile. “You think it's too much don't you?”
“A little.” Hinata kept chuckling, “Although if you do go along with that idea remind me to send the Hyuga elders in there with them.” Sasuke chuckled along with her.
“What fun are we missing?” Naruto came walking in the room with his own bowl of soup and Sakura walking behind him with a bowl for herself and Sasuke.
“We're just discussing how to get rid of the people who make our lives a living hell.” Sasuke smirked.
“By making them get lost in a maze.” Hinata added.
“Ha! I thought Sasuke had dragged you to the dark side for a minute there Hinata.” Naruto joked.
“Hinata's too pure for the dark side.” Sasuke said taking the bowl of soup from Sakura's hands. Naruto and Sakura sat on a couple of plush pillows on the floor and each began eating.
“Too pure?” Sakura smiled, “You don't know Hinata like I do.” Sakura spoke between mouthfuls.
“Sakura don't you dare! We promised never to tell anyone!” Hinata's eyes widened knowing exactly what secret of hers Sakura would divulge.
“What have you done that we couldn't know.” Sasuke smirked at the Hyuga.
“N-Nothing.” Hinata blushed.
“She-”
“Don't you dare! Not another word.” Hinata pointed at Sakura. “Otherwise I'll tell them what you did that night too.” Sakura's face blushed as much as Hinata's and quickly closed her mouth.
“Hyuga, you surprise me everyday.” Sasuke smiled to her over his spoon of soup. They each ate in silence after that, looking at one another wondering what secrets they kept. Well apart from Sasuke, they all knew about his dark past, how ironic that he was the only one in the room with no secrets to tell.
As one week turned in to the next the mansion and grounds became more and more liveable. Hinata met with the gardener Sasuke had hired because as soon as he saw Sasuke the poor man nearly wet himself. Hinata suggested a herb garden near the kitchens, so they could use them in the cooking. A grass area, flower beds, there was already a natural lake so that needed cleaning up. Tall Hedges would go around the mansion giving Sasuke privacy, not that he needed it at the moment with an empty district. But Hinata had pointed out the next generation would. He'd liked that, Hinata didn't just see him living there but generations of Uchiha's, his clan restored.
The four of them made a great team together, they easily got along, well apart from when Naruto annoyed the hell out of Sasuke with his whining. Each night after a full day of decorating, cleaning or other responsibilities they chose to do, they had a meal usually prepared by Hinata or Sakura and they would relax in the sitting room.
Tonight was no different Naruto and Sakura played on the new gaming system Naruto had bought and big TV while Sasuke and Hinata read their books.
“Oh come on Sakura! You have to let me win once!” Naruto moaned.
“It's one on one, why would I let you win idiot?! It's not my fault you're crap at this game.”
“Will you two stop bickering.” Sasuke looked his two team mates on the floor.
“Sorry.” They both said in unison and went back to their game.
Hearing a chuckle coming from behind her book Sasuke looked at the Hyuga.
“What you giggling at?”
“I was just thinking how you're like their dad.” Hinata placed her book on her lap. “Telling them off like children.”
“Don't give me nightmares Hyuga.”
“I think I'm gonna go for a walk in the gardens, stretch my legs.” Hinata smiled at Sasuke and placed her book on the side table.
“Don't get lost.” Sasuke called smirking to himself while going back to his book. Feeling eyes watching him he looked over at his two team mates. “What?”
“Nothing.” They both jumped and turned back to their game.
Hinata wrapped her coat tighter around herself, it felt good to feel the fresh air on her face after being in the house all day. There was hardly any wind tonight which made walking all the more pleasant. She noticed the newly laid grass and earth that had been shifted to add more fertile soil to aid the flowers and plants once the gardener was ready to plant them. Bags and bags of soil sat to one side, with a stack of wood beside it and big stones to lay a path.
Hinata strolled past them all and looked at the Uchiha mansion behind her, she smiled to herself seeing the windows looking clean. Soon they would be able concentrate on Sasuke's lessons rather than just cleaning the place up. They still hadn't discussed a date for the ball, but Hinata wanted to make sure Sasuke was ready first.
Noticing she'd walked to the lake Hinata looked over the still and welcoming water, the water clean now. Using her Byakugan she spotted Sasuke, Naruto and Sakura in the sitting room still, wanting to make sure no one could see her. Knowing she was definitely alone she took off her coat and shoes and lay them on the side of the lake where they wouldn't get wet. Sending chakra to her feet she took a tentative step on to its surface, then another, until finally she stood in the centre of the lake. She loved the feeling of the water lapping her toes and often wondered why her nature affinity was fire and lightning, somehow she'd always had a special bond with water. It was able to calm her and clear her head of negative thoughts. As a child she use to dance on the water when no one was watching.
Hinata smiled at the memory and began to swing her arms from side to side, her hips moving on there own with her arms movements. Pulling her phone and headphones from her pocket Hinata played a certain track she'd always loved and was soon swaying from side to side again.
The music began with a long and beautiful melody, and a female voice began to sing. Hinata danced around the lake to the music twisting and turning to the rhythm of the track. Letting go of all inhibitions she stag jumped it to air sending water droplets all around her. Spinning on the spot she created a water sphere around herself, being able to control the water at her feet Hinata moved it in such a way it twirled in to a column of under her feet and pushed her up in to the air.
Hinata released the water sphere around her and it created a level platform for her to move on in a small circle. Where she dipped her hands in the water once more and sent it flying around her.
As the music settled down once more Hinata allowed the water to drop her back to its normal surface level and instead of a column of water she'd created a shape of a man. She tried not to pay too much attention to the fact she'd created a clone to look exactly like her cousin Neji. Instead she curtsied and the water clone bowed back with a secret smile on his face, he wrapped his hand around her waist and settled it on her back, while Hinata placed her hand on his shoulder, with their other hands they held on to one another. In time with the music they waltzed around the lake in hold. Hinata couldn't help but laugh at how free she felt.
Sasuke sat on the couch reading his book off Hinata, she was right he was actually enjoying it. Being engrossed in another world, the characters, their trials and tribulations. Sasuke frowned and looked around him; Naruto and Sakura were still playing their stupid and loud video game, Hinata had yet to return from her walk. She must have been gone a while now, half an hour? Maybe more? He didn't want to seem like he was worrying about the Hyuga, God knows his team mates would think way too much if he did mention anything.
Snuggling down more into the couch cushion he pulled the book up to cover his face and activated his sharingan. The sharingan gave him the ability to see through the house walls and around the grounds, he couldn't see objects as clearly as the Byakugan but he could detect chakra.
Sasuke could see the two figures dancing on the lake, he could tell which was the original and which figure was the clone by the flow of chakra from Hinata's feet gliding over the surface of the lake where it formed lines almost like a cartoon stick man. He frowned when he saw the way she danced with the obvious male water figure. He didn't know why he felt put out by it, he didn't have a particular affection for her, maybe it was the fact it reminded him of his old team mate Suigetsu. He did however admire her ability to form the water so precisely though, it took great chakra control to do that he'd admit.
He had meant to go back to reading, meant to give Hinata her privacy again but the way she danced so freely held his stare. She moved elegantly over the water, as if she and water were one of the same. Seeing the two figures break apart he watched as they danced away from each other, the chakra at her feet uncoiled like a rope as she pirouetted away. For a while the clone mirrored Hinata's movements until she began to run towards the clone. Suddenly she leapt in the air, right into the chakra enhanced hands of the clone where he lifted her in the air above his head and spun them round in a circle.
“Sasuke? Sasuke?!”
“What!?” Sasuke released his sharingan, moved his book and angrily looked to Naruto on the floor.
“Just wondering if you wanted a turn?”
“As if.” Sasuke frowned and quickly went back to his book.
Hinata took steadying breaths and relinquished her control over the water, watching the water clone Neji disappear back in to the water. She sighed in relief when she felt her chakra suck itself back into her body. She hadn't realised she used so much but she was happy she'd done it.
After retrieving her belongings Hinata walked slowly back to the house, feeling like a weight had been lifted off her shoulder's.
As the end of October approached the four friends were busy during their days still, however now they were hardly seeing one another. Naruto was now helping Kakashi with his paperwork at the Hokage tower. Now most rooms in the house were clean and Hinata starting to decorate the lounge, Sakura didn't feel confident in her decorating skills to 'help' Hinata, and therefore with Hinata's blessing (even though Hinata couldn't understand why Sakura needed her blessing) Sakura began to work shifts at the hospital. Sasuke had 'helped' Hinata at first, telling her colours he liked, which were none by the way. If the colour was in the rainbow or Naruto liked it; Sasuke hated it! He chose a couple of pictures of rooms he liked the look of so Hinata could quote 'get a feel for what he liked', which he of course had rolled his eyes at. After that Hinata had worked on her own. While Hinata was busy decorating Sasuke was either helping the gardener, looking through some book Hinata had wanted him to read before they began their lessons which she'd told him would start soon or training.
Hinata stood in the kitchen trying to make herself look busy while she waited for Sasuke to return from the local shops. She wanted to ask him for a favour and today she had put the finishing touches to the sitting room and wanted him to see the end result. She hoped he liked it! She'd worked really hard decorating the room to what she hoped was to Sasuke's liking. She had hoped they'd do the project together but the second she mentioned the word shopping Sasuke left everything to her.
On the bright side, she felt like she knew him a lot more after decorating one room in his (hopefully) taste though. I know it sounds absurd but Hinata had come to realise a few details about Sasuke just from the picture boards and colours he'd chosen. He liked cosy rooms, snug and warm. He liked a more relaxed homely finish, nothing too modern but not old fashioned either, liked wooden flooring but it had to be light wood not dark. Didn't like a fuss to be made of things, so ornaments were out of the question. Art had to have a purpose as to why it was there! Things had to be organised, it reminded her of a saying her father used: 'A place for everything and everything in its place'. All these little details she'd kept in mind while she'd decorated, she only hoped they were the right details.
Slamming the front door shut behind him with a kick of his foot Sasuke walked in to the kitchen and threw the bags of food on the counter top. Hinata then took over and began to put all the food away while Sasuke helped himself to a coffee to warm himself up. This was their routine now; he'd shop and bring the food home and Hinata would put it all away (mainly cos Sasuke had no idea where any of the food went since she'd reorganised! That was his excuse anyway) strange really how accustomed and relaxed he found himself in her presence though, usually more so than when he was in Naruto's but then again Naruto did tend to get on his nerves. Sasuke put it down to the fact Hinata could get along with anyone, himself included. She was just a gentle soul, nothing more to it.
“I made some soup in the pan for you.” Hinata informed him. She knew him well enough by now to know that he probably hadn't eaten since breakfast, knew he was starving and with it now being 1 in the afternoon if he didn't eat something soon he'd be grouchy...well more grouchy than normal.
“You heard from Sakura?” Sasuke asked, to try and fill the silence between them.
“Um she messaged me before, she finishes at midnight so we need to save her some leftovers.” Sasuke nodded his head slightly to show he was at least listening, “You heard from Naruto?” Hinata asked him while still putting away the shopping.
“He said about 10, but knowing him more like 11. I wouldn't bother saving him anything he'll probably get ramen.”
“ok. I was thinking of inviting a few friends over next week? Have a movie night?” Hinata began to twiddle her thumbs as she was becoming more and more agitated the more questions she asked Sasuke.
“Hyuga, did I happen to mention I hate when you think things.”
“Mmmm? Yes last Tuesda -”
“That was a rhetorical question Hyuga. You know I use sarcasm right? ”
“Oh?” Hinata looked over at Sasuke with a confused expression on her face, “It's just very hard to tell with you, seeing as you're an arse all the time.” Sasuke actually found himself laughing, not a full belly laugh he hadn't done that since his childhood. But a laugh never the less.
“Touché Hyuga, if I had a drink I'd raise a glass to your snide comment.”
“What do you think though? We could invite some of your friends...” Seeing Sasuke's face of disgust it was Hinata's turn to laugh, “Or we could just invite a select few people over.”
“I'll think about it.”
“Really?” Hinata smiled at him brightly.
“Don't get you're hopes up Hyuga, chances are I'm gonna say 'no'.”
“I'll take those chances.”
Sasuke placed his now empty soup bowl in the sink, he'd wash it later with the other pots, he told himself. Hinata usually made the meal and he wash the dishes, he didn't expect her to do everything in the house!
Sensing Hinata's stare on him he looked over at her and caught her eye.
“What?”
“I-I...-”
“God I hate when you get all nervous. I'm not gonna kill you.”
“No-No I know.” Hinata assured him, her eyes growing wide at the thought she would even think he would. Huh? Did the Hyuga actually trust he wouldn't hurt her? Strange...
“I am a little nervous though, sure.” She chuckled awkwardly, “I just reallywantyoutolikeitandidontknowifyouwilland-”
“Hyuga! Breath!” Sasuke placed his hands on her shoulder's, “Start again, somewhere I can make even the slightest sense what you're going on about.” Hinata bit her lip to hide her smile, there was nothing she could do to hide her blush of embarrassment on her cheeks though. Hinata took a few deep and calming breaths and looked in to Sasuke's smirking face.
“I finished decorating the sitting room. Would you like to see it?” Hinata whispered. Seeing Sasuke nod his head Hinata grabbed hold of his hand and pulled him out the kitchen.
Sasuke was trying to comprehend how Hinata had gone from shy and nervous to having her hand in his and pulling him in the direction she wanted to go. When the hell did he become the less dominant one?
“Ready?” Hinata smiled at him. Sasuke felt himself nodding automatically, heard Hinata open the door to the sitting room and pull him in to the newly decorated room. He could smell the new paint smell still, but his mind was elsewhere. He was concentrating on Hinata, watching her reactions. If he was truly honest with himself he found her fascinating to watch. Her smile; her true smile, was rare especially after the war so Sakura had informed him. Seeing her truly smile now and for that smile to be aimed at him well he would dare the devil himself not to smile back also! Because he was smiling back, and yes a true and rare smile it felt strange and odd but still he smiled.
She pulled him this way and that, showing him certain things in the room she thought he would like. A certain chair, she knew he liked to sit in his dad's chair so she'd had the inners and springs re-done so it was now more comfy, where the fabric had been fraying and fading away had been replaced with tan leather to match the new 'L' shaped couch. Still old, but yet new.
The mantelpiece above the fire had been sanded down to its wood, so it now looked like a piece of drift wood off the beach rather than the grand ornamental and intricate design it had on it only two weeks ago.
Then it hit him; a wave of emotion that he had no idea how to handle. Two weeks ago this room had been a reminder of the past, a happy reminder for once. A room his mother had decorated herself, a room where the whole family gathered together for a change, a room where himself and Itachi had been shouted at countless times for fighting, where he would wait right next to window for Itachi to come home.
“Sasuke?”
Sasuke clutched onto the back of the new couch to steady himself. He felt like he was about to be throw up.
“You don't like it? I can change-”
“Shhh.” Sasuke placed his hand over her mouth. He couldn't stand to hear her talking, with his ears buzzing he felt seconds away from passing out. He had to find a way to get rid of these emotions; to forget them.
“I need a drink.” Sasuke mumbled.
“Wait Sasuke-” Hinata tried to stop him, but once Sasuke Uchiha had made up his mind there was no stopping him.
