1. StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void Release Date: Nov 10, 2015, Theme: Sci-Fi, Game Modes: Single player, multiplayer, Game Series: Starcraft. StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void is the third and final chapter in the StarCraft II trilogy and it continues the tradition of being the continues-to-set-the-standard-of-everything that a real-time strategy game should be. It's been more than five years since the release of the first chapter in the StarCraft II trilogy, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, and much like that game, Legacy of the Void retains the number one stop on the list of Best Real Time Strategy games. While there are worthy games in the list of Top Real-Time Strategy games, the combination of its compelling storyline, addictive game play and superb, and the chess-like perfection in strategic balance that is found in Starcraft II has gone unrivaled.

Rome: Total War Release Date: Sep 22, 2004, Theme: Historical, Game Modes: Single player, multiplayer, Game Series: Total War The number 2 game in my list of top real-time strategy games comes from the Total War series that has a long lineage games that have all been well received by critics and fans alike. Released back in 2004, Rome: Total War places players in control of one of the great Roman Houses during the years 270 BC - AD 14, the Julii, Brutii, or Scipii. As with other Total War games, Rome Total War is based on historical people and events that you get to change by playing out the game. In controlling one of the great houses you will guide the Roman Empire through its height, expanding the empire beyond its historical borders or causing it to fall well short. Once the single-player campaign is completed eight additional factions become available for play. They include Britannia, Carthage, Gaul, Germania, Greek Cities, Parthia and the Seleucid Empire.

3. Company of Heroes Release Date: Sep 12, 2006, Theme: World War II, Game Modes: Single player, multiplayer, Game Series: Company of Heroes. Coming in at number 3 on the list of top real time strategy games is the World War II game Company of Heroes. Winner of numerous game of the year awards when it was released in 2006, it has a loyal fan base still even after the sequel Company of Heros 2 has since been released. The game contains a historically accurate and compelling single player storyline that takes players from D-Day on beaches of Normandy and invasion of France in through to the Battle of the Falaise Pocket which took place in August of 1944. Players control two different US Army forces depending on the mission, Able Company of the 29th Infantry Division and Fox Company of the 101st Airborne Division. The game includes six main missions or chapters that cover a major battle or operation during World War II. In addition to the main storyline for Company of Heroes there were also two expansion packs released; Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts and Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor, both of which contain a single players story campaign and includes new factions.

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos Release Date: Jul 3, 2002, Theme: Fantasy, Game Modes: Single player, multiplayer, Game Series: Warcraft Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos is the third title in the Warcraft series of real time strategy games and one of the most popular PC games of all time. Not only was it immensly popular upon its release, it also received much critical acclaim when it was released. The commercial and critical success helped feed the anticipation for subsequent success of World of Warcraft massively multiplayer online role playing game that took the world by storm.

Total War: Shogun 2 Release Date: Mar 15, 2011, Theme: Historical, Game Modes: Single player, multiplayer, Game Series: Total War Total War: Shogun 2 is a real time strategy game from the Total War series of games that returns players to feudal Japan of the 16th century. It is also the second game set in feudal Japan but is not considered a sequel to the first Total War game, Shogun: Total War, as it takes place during the same time frame and updates the game engine, game play and graphics.
