Deidra had been nervous before, but nothing quite prepared her for this moment — standing behind a row of hydrangeas that were glowing faintly blue, thanks to whatever safe pH solution Julius had used in the soil.

Their wedding was happening. Right here. On campus. Beneath a “quantum unity arch” Julius built himself — a clunky but sweet metallic frame covered in LED-lit beakers, each bubbling with symbolic colors. It tilted slightly to the left.

Deidra adjusted her glasses with a shaky hand. She could hear the faint clink of lab glass in the breeze, some kind of decorative wind chime Julius insisted on hanging from a nearby microscope stand. Her green eyes scanned the modest gathering — professors, students, and a few bemused family members who looked like they weren’t sure if this was a ceremony or a science fair.

His hair was combed back — or at least, he’d tried — and he was smiling at her like she was the only equation he couldn’t quite solve but loved trying anyway.

As she walked toward him, Deidra’s nerves started to quiet. He was jittery, obviously, fingers twitching at his sides and rocking back on his heels, but his eyes never left her. Not once.

The officiant, a bewildered ethics professor pressed into service by popular demand, cleared his throat. “Ladies and gentlemen—”

“Hold it,” said a voice from the back.

Deidra froze.

Of course.

Stella Purdy.

She stood by the folding chairs, her red dress too tight, her smile too smug. She held a martini glass that no one recalled handing her.

“I just wanted to say a few words. As a close personal friend of Julius.” Her eyes sparkled with venom as they turned to Deidra. “And academic rival of the bride.”

Julius visibly panicked. “Stella, I don’t think—”

“No, no, it’s important,” she purred. “I just wanted to wish you two all the best. Truly. Especially with, you know, loyalty. And communication. Those are so important when you're marrying someone whose idea of commitment involves a molecular chart.”

Deidra's mouth went dry.

The crowd murmured. Someone dropped a cup.

“Thank you, Stella,” the officiant said tightly. “Now—”

“I mean, I just find it fascinating that after all the chemistry we had—”

“Alright, alright!” Julius shouted, his voice cracking like a startled pigeon. “Let’s, uh, let’s move along! Hah! Heh! Nothing to see here! Emotional sabotage is strictly forbidden by Section 2.3 of our wedding agreement!”

He fumbled in his coat and, in his panic, pulled out a small glass vial. Deidra’s eyes went wide.

Deidra’s were sweet, careful, and deeply personal. She spoke of the first time she saw him trip over a desk and fall directly into a skeleton model, and how she knew right then she’d either laugh or love him forever — and ended up doing both.

Julius's vows, Buddy-inflected and all, still somehow made her tear up.

“I may not be the coolest molecule in the compound,” he said, eyes locked on hers, “but you’ve always seen the real me. Even when I couldn’t. You never needed me to be anyone else — and that’s why I’ll spend every day trying to be worthy of your trust.”

Even Stella looked a little touched. Not much. But a little.

Then came the kiss.

It started simple. Sweet.

Until Julius dipped her so dramatically her heel snapped and they both collapsed into the base of the arch — which groaned, sparked, and exploded in a harmless but dramatic puff of lavender smoke.

The guests erupted into laughter and applause.

As they lay tangled in lab-themed wedding décor, Julius blinked up at her and whispered, “Was that okay?”

Deidra burst into giggles. “You’re an idiot.”

“Your idiot?”

“Always.”

He turned toward her, awe softening his face. “I still can’t believe you married me.”

She reached over and took his hand, threading her fingers through his.

“You’re brilliant, kind, ridiculous, and you make beakers explode when you’re nervous,” she whispered. “I didn’t want perfect. I wanted you.”

A shooting star crossed overhead.

Julius blinked at it. “Probability-wise, that’s very rare. You think it’s a sign?”

“Maybe,” she smiled. “Or maybe just timing.”

He leaned in and kissed her again — gently this time, without smoke or audience — and in that moment, Deidra knew one truth that had nothing to do with science:

Hi, dropping by with another question regarding murder pigeons:

Who trained Exorcists to fight?

Especially the first ones, since all the later creations were probably tought by their seniors, but someone had to come first and know which end of the sword to grab. While their personas were molded from the pre-set soul templates (or whatever you wanna call it), I don't think something that takes time to learn like martial skills are transferable that way. (or maybe I'm wrong. Language also takes time to learn and yet there they are)

The reason why this gets interesting is because Exorcists were a secret kept from the rest of Heaven, known only to the higher ranks of Heaven. So no other angels (possible veterans of the War with Lucifer) may offer their skills and time here. And the high-ranking angels of the court are probably too busy with other important work to care about a bunch of pest control golems.

I guess one option was that they were all self tought, which may be a valid point given that they were not expected to fight equal opponents but to slaughter defenceless (or at least harmless) sinners. So, they wouldn't have to know how to fight, when they only had to stab, which doesn't take much figuring out.

Another possibility: Sera just magicked a virtual trainer for them. (but that would be kinda lame)

Bonus point: Remember that ask about where souls came from and you pondered that in SII-verse, where Adam is even more of a dick, Exorcists may not be fresh creations, but rather winner souls stripped of memories and given new bodies? Well, here's the thing, this gets into a common misconception by the fan base.

The Exorcists aren't a secret, their purpose is. This isn't just a PEW thing, this is canon to the show. Adam and Lute walk around in full uniform in board daylight, no attempts are made to hide the existence of the Exorcist Army. In Helluva Boss, Cletus the Cherub claims to be an Exorcist when they are captured and interviewed by the D.H.O.R.K.S. showing us that Exorcists are not only publicly known but likely admired by most of Heaven, why? Because the understanding of the rest of Heaven is that Exorcists are the defenders of Heaven and slayers of demons, vanguards of the eternal war between Heaven and Hell.

Exterminations are the secret, known only to the Exorcist Army and Sera. Quote Adam on Sara's one rule "Ugh, Only the Exorcists can know about the Exterminations, I know, Fine."

So yeah, that answers that and by extension it makes the answer to the original question much easier.

The first batch of Exorcists were heavily supervised by Sera, especially the first actual Exorcist that she personally helped Adam create, Commander. Commander received personal training from Sera and the other Exorcists were trained by Sera's former soldiers and veterans of the old war. Said Veterans just thought they were training the new generation of Demon hunters and trusted their old general enough to not ask too many questions. Once the first generation of Exorcists were trained they became able to train their own new recruits,making them self sufficient enough to no longer need outside help... Though this might have been something of a downside, as we see in the show that while Exorcists are decent fighters, when faced with an actual threat they turn out to be of middling skill at best with rare exceptions such as Lute and Vaggie. Probably could have used better training, if only they still had someone around who was intimately familiar with the flaws in the Exorcist fighting style.

As for your other story suggestion, believe me, I've considered the Adam kidnapping souls plot in depth. It's good drama and has story potential... It's just I can't do it because logistically it doesn't make sense.

On the one hand, Sera is obviously the instigator behind the creation of the Exorcist Army. She sees the grim necessity in culling the sinner population but her explicit goal is the protection of Heaven which means angels and winners. She wouldn't give Adam the knowledge, tools, or authority to harvest the souls of Winners and turn them into Exorcists.

Also, it's a huge numbers issue. The Exorcist Army, to be able to make a notable dent in hell's population (which means all Nine circles of Pride, not just Pentagram city), needs to have tens of thousands to upwards of millions of Exorcists in it. There is no logical way that many souls being mysteriously disappeared from the population would go unnoticed. Additionally, even if we ignored the numbers issue, this plotline would remove the Lute is Joan D'Arc thing, as there is no way that a soul as high profile as her suddenly disappearing wouldn't be investigated, the woman is quite literally a saint... I have to imagine Saints get some amount of celebrity status in Heaven, like Saint Peter getting a job at the pearly gates
