I’ve worked remotely for almost seven years, so I understand what it generally takes to work from home successfully. But then the social distancing orders went into place in March. Now, I’ve gone from focusing on work alone, in my home office, to sharing my workspace with my wife. Therefore, working from home has become less about working and more about home.
So in this article, I have shared some tips for interns who want to stay motivated during their work-from-home internships.
Here are five tips based on that research and my own experiences.
1. Update your mindset
Many of us are trying to juggle two full-time jobs simultaneously: parenting and work. But you cannot physically do both at the same time. Repeat that to yourself if you need to. 
Therefore, I suggest that you be realistic to keep from getting demoralized. These are challenging times, and you can not be as productive as before. But as an intern, you should impress your mentor in your unpaid or paid internship.
2. Set realistic goals
Now that you’ve updated your mindset write down the task for the day. It will help you not only prioritize your work when time is limited but also enable you to be satisfied that you’re still focusing on what matters. 3. Create a new routine

Best Date Ever (Shuri x Reader)
Maybe engineering wasn’t Shuri’s only talent. She was also decent at acting. Every time you two were around each other, she managed to keep her cool, despite internally squealing. Riri, Okoye, M’Baku, and Nakia were the only ones aware of her true feelings. And they teased her accordingly. You recently started working at the lab as a paid internship while you went to school. According to Shuri’s sources, you were a player. Okay, so not officially. You were very charming and easy to get along which garnered a lot of suitors. There was only one person, however, who had your interest. 
“Hey princess, I like your kicks,” You said. It was getting late, which explained why many of the staff were proceeding to leave the lab. You were in no rush. Sometimes you didn’t mind staying late if it meant tomorrow would be easier for you. Plus, it meant you got to spend more time with Shuri. “You should let me borrow them.”
“I don’t think we wear the same size,” Shuri replied.
“Where’d you get ‘em from? Maybe we can go to the store and you can help me find a pair.”
“I got these online.”
Anyone else would probably be a little annoyed, but you just grinned. “Doesn’t mean I have to. Come on, Shuri, put me on. Where do you get your fashions? Unless you design them all.”
“Pretty much,” she said with a smirk and gestured around at some of her creations. 
You pretended to think, though you did wonder the answer to your next question. “What would it take to get you to design some gear for me?”
Shuri cracked a smile, and you mentally fist-pumped. She controlled her laugh. “Let’s see…maybe not being an intern.”
“Ouch. Ice Princess it is, then, huh?”
She folded her arms, looking you up and down, as if saying “and what about it?”
You sighed. “Well, that was unsuccessful.”
Shuri laughed and watched as you packed up your bag. Unbeknownst to you, the look in her eyes became longing. You looked up, ready to say bye, and you saw her quickly avert her eyes. She cleared her throat. 
You raised an eyebrow and looked on, amused. “So, I’ll see you tomorrow…”
“Mhm. You will.”
“Tomorrow’s a long time, though. Why are you rolling your eyes? I mean it, Shuri.”
“I know you tell all the girls this.”
“No, just the ones I’m attracted to. And there’s only one person occupying that space.”
Shuri’s heart raced at the boldness of your words and gaze. You stepped close to her and she stiffened like a board, except for her trembling hands. 
“What’s wrong, pretty?” You asked, concerned.
She refused to look at you, but you stopped that by grasping her jaw. 
“N-nothing,” she answered, solemnly peering at you. 
“Doesn’t seem like nothing, princess.” You separated from her only to sit on her desk and sit her in between your legs.
She blushed. “I’m fine, I promise.”
“Yes, you are.”
She battled a smile, meanwhile you happily showed yours with ease. She sighed, leaning back against you, which made your heart swell. You wanted to hold this moment. The two of you stayed like this until she thought someone was coming. At that, she budged and went around to her desk, busying herself.
You laughed lowly, shaking your head at the engineer. “Princess, you’re grown.”
She gave you a look. “Duh, Y/N.”
“So, why did you scramble away like you got caught stealing?”
“Maybe if you didn’t have the reputation you have, I would be more relaxed,” she said in defense. 
“And what reputation is that?” You asked, though you were sure you knew the answer. You had suspected that some kind of fear was holding Shuri back. You just weren’t sure what the fear stemmed from.
“Really, Y/N? You’re going to sit there and pretend you don’t know people call you a player.”
“So that makes it true?”
Cat got her tongue.
“I just don’t want to get hurt,” she admitted quietly. Even though you were offended, you wanted to hug her right now. You knew she’d been through a lot. Her heart was probably in a very fragile state. “But that doesn’t mean I should judge you without getting to know you.”
You smiled. “Does that mean you’ll go on a date with me?”

Shuri laughed when your destination turned out to be a sneaker store. 
“I promise this is a small part of the date,” You told her. 
She didn’t say anything, just amusedly walked inside the store, looking around. You were amazed at how quickly she found the very pair of sneakers you were interested in. They were a nice replica of Shuri’s pair, though she had made her own customizations. 
“Try them on,” she said and waited for you to do so. You felt warm at her treating you like you were her child, asking you how they fit and if they were comfortable. “Do you like them?”
You confirmed that you did and she nodded, walking off to go pay for them despite your protests. 
“What do you say?” She asked teasingly as you left the store. 
“Thank you, princess.”
“You welcome. Mine are still better, though.” 
Next, you took her to a tattoo parlor. She had recently mentioned at the lab that she was planning to get another tattoo. By the widening of her eye and parted lips, you knew she was surprised that you knew. 
You encouraged her to squeeze your hand. She insisted that it was no thang. She would go on to squeeze your hand, however, reasoning that she was rusty because it had “been a while.” 
“Are you gonna get one?” She asked, smiling.
You told her you’d think about it. “It’s not about me tonight,” You said in her ear and you could see a big smile spread on her face. 
When you arrived a fondue restaurant, Shuri failed to contain a giggle. 
“Why do you keep laughing, woman? Are you trying to crush my ego?”
Shuri’s amusement turned into a side-eye. “First of all, Y/N, no one should have that kind of power over you. And second, I’m laughing because I feel like a kid again.” She smiled.
“I get it.” 
She kissed your cheek and pulled you to follow the usher who led you both to your table. Dinner was a hit and not just because of the food. Shuri wasn’t just beauty and brains, she was easy to talk to and banter with. You decided you could probably talk to her all night and truly not get bored.
“What was your first impression of me?” You asked. 
“Oh,” she said and you both shared a soft laugh. She stared at you deeply. “I thought you were…hmm…” She stroked her jaw. 
“You thought I was a player, apparently.”
“No, you right, I did. But I thought you were nice, smart, and a baddie.”
You smiled widely. “Oh, I’m a baddie?”
She conveniently sipped her drink. 
“I thought you were all of those things…and…” You paused for dramatic effect.
“And?” She pressed.
“A little stuck-up. Just a smidge.” You made the gesture with your thumb and pointer. “At least towards me. But I like it.”
She rolled her eyes. “I am not stuck-up, Y/N.”
“Just a little smidgington. Come on, you know you’re sassy.”
“I disagree, I’m just clever.”
“That too. You’re all of those things, and I’m not mad. You have every right to be, with your fine princessy ass.”
She struggled not to laugh. “Y/N!” 
You chortled, pleased with her reaction as she held her stomach, doing the silent kind of cracking up. She got up and sat next to you, grabbing your face. “What am I going to do with you?”
“Hopefully something…nah, let me stop.” You held off from saying something inappropriate. Shuri was flustered as it was, though she clearly entertained by it. 
“What do you want to do to me?” You questioned softly. Oh, you thought, noticing her stare harden. And before you knew it, she tightened her grip, kissing you firmly. 
“I’m sorry,” she said, leaning her forehead to yours. She didn’t mean to kiss you roughly. She wanted you to like her kiss. You opted to encourage her physically. You stroked her forearm before softly and slowly molding your lips together once more. Craving more, Shuri leaned closer to you, enabling you to feel her body warmth. Your name never sounded better, courtesy of her mouth. “Y/N…”
“Mhmm,” you hummed, kissing her neck. She looked so blissed out. It was beautiful. 
She gripped your thigh as if for relief. Her breathing picked up when your neck kisses progressed into sucks. You marveled at her sensitivity, which was also surely heightened by being in a public place. You wanted her so bad you didn’t care. But you could’t have y’all go out like that. She whined a little when you ended your efforts to give her a love bite. 
“Sssh, we can continue this at my place, if you want, only if you want to,” You assured her. You meant this, too. It was up to her to decide if she wanted to proceed. You wanted her to be completely sure. 
After fighting over who would pay the bill, you both agreed to split the check. You don’t know what came over Shuri, but when you reached the car, she restrained your wrists, launching another make out session.
This was the best date ever.

I recall you mentioning once that you worked in a lab, do u have any advice for getting to that point? I want (read: NEED) to work or intern at a lab but I don’t rlly know what to ask the ppl running them lol
If I can help I'd be glad to!! Full disclaimer though, I am an undergrad junior and I go to school at a pretty reputable research institution so I may not be that much help because I've been pretty lucky and privileged to have direct access to many opportunities. If you're not a high schooler or undergrad student, my advice might not even apply to you at all. This got quite long, so I'll put this under a read more. If you have any more questions, feel free to dm me!
I don't know what your research interests are or what level of schooling you're at so I'll try my best to be broad. You're right that it's best to directly ask the person running the lab, the principal investigator (PI). Even if there's an official application process for fellowships or summer research grants or programs, usually already having reached out to a mentor is either a requirement or strongly encouraged. This applies for both university labs and I think rseearch agency labs like NIH, though I will say, a lot more of my advice will apply to labs at universities.
Understandably, though, it's really difficult to write that email, and quite disheartening that usually you'll need to write multiple emails to different PIs before even getting a reply back. One way to deal with this is to find a template online to copy, because word for word these emails usually go
"Hello [so and so], My name is [so and so] and I'm [brief introduction]. I'm interested in [what research this lab does] and was wondering if you have any positions available in your lab for [period you want to do internship during]. If you need them, my resume and transcript are attached. Thank you for your time."
You can delve into more specifcs in the body but it doesn't need to be long-- I think PIs tend to be quite busy, so being concise and direct is good, as long as you're genuine about what you're interested in. It doesn't need to be an essay or multiple paragraphs or anything! I find that usually 3-4 sentences suffices. If they want to know more, they'll usually ask to meet to talk about what you're interested in.
(On a side note, my roommate has an excellent strategy for dealing with anxiety when sending an email where you recite "fuck it we ball fuck it we ball fuck it we ball" while clicking send lmao)
Now, more specifically, if you're already attending a college that has labs, and professors who are PIs of those labs, it can be useful to take a class that the PI teaches and email either while taking the class or after the class and say "this class was very interesting and i was hoping to explore [so and so] further. Do you have any openings in your lab etc." If you don't have the time to do this, just cold-emailing the lab is usually fine too, but it's good to cite a connection I think? Also keep an eye out for any presentations or seminars that might be given by grad students or professors, since going to those can be a good way to express interest.
If you're a high schooler, you won't have the immediate connection, but I think most researchers would be impressed with the initiative to reach out and have no reason to refuse help. You might have a harder time finding a paid internship as a high schooler, but even with volunteering you can definitely get a foot into the door with research experience. I think a good way to start for high schoolers is looking into local university labs and expressing an interest in their work? Or reaching out to alumni of your school to ask for general advice and or opportunities.
If you don't receive an email back, you can send a follow up in two or three days. Sometimes emails can get pushed to the bottom of the inbox before they're seen, and it's no harm to just bump it again, with a little "hello! I wasn't sure if you'd seen this email. I'd like to follow up on this." (historically, I have been very bad at this, ahha). If you receive a negative response (which is pretty unlikely I think?) you can still thank them for their time and ask for advice regarding getting into research for their field of specialty.

(Note this is mainly for work in the Corporate sector but I can assure that applicable information can be applied to other Job areas.)
Getting a job
So you are fresh out of college, and now you realize those student loans arent gonna be paid by the government after all. So what are you going to do?
The answer is get a Job.
But how are you going to get one?
1. Connections:
-If you havent already, start with creating a Linkedin account and try to connect with every person you have ever met, especially if you are going into the field of work with the individuals.
After that, try searching LinkedIn for every person that is in a high position in the field you want to start your career. Most won’t respond, but some will and that is good for you.
Most people in the corporate world that get interviews for their first job with good companies are usually through connections. Leverage family, friends, old employment, old internships, etc.
-I also recommend staying in touch with your Alma mater, professors are usually people with connections and if they like you can help pull some strings. But if not, the school usually will have some sort of program that will help you get your first job. Though not all colleges have it, but its best to check.
-Always avoid sales jobs. Now some sales jobs are fine and legit, but its usually gonna end with the company taking the list of people you know and selling to them before tossing you aside. It burns your friends and Family’s good will. Thats usually the reason why at least once in your life you will have someone from high school reaching out to you about ‘A product or service’.
-Nurture the network. You want people to like you enough to recommend you for jobs, especially this early on. Your experience is garbage and you have no negotiating power. Unless you are from an Ivy league school and have a 4.0. You have no value in the eyes of the company alone. So your best bet is to lean on people you know.
2. Resume
-For the love of crap, work on your resume. Doesnt matter how good your connections are, if you made your resume out of crayon you are screwed. Take time to format it, look up some how to guides, ask some people you know how they worked their resume. It is not fun, but it is important. Resumes are what get people in the door in a lot of cases. The best resumes on online applications are filtered based on how close they fit the job description.
-Make sure to keep that resume updated and easy to edit so you can alter it to match a job description better. This is a trick to help improve the odds of selection.
-Same thing but with Linkedin, there are recruiters on Linkedin and other sites that search for canidates. Most of them are sales jobs, but some arent and you can leverage them if possible
-Since this is on Tumblr, I’m going to tell you this upfront, don’t put your pronouns in your resume. I was talking with a recruiter and that’s a thing they use to filter out so most online applications won’t see it. Mainly cause it’s seen as Filler and stuff like this will be addressed later.
3. Certifications and internships
-When you are new in the workforce, you will need ANYTHING to differentiate you from the crowd, having a certification in whatever is needed in your field is always a bonus. Granted these cost cash to get into, so this is more of a last resort when you are looking for your first job.
-Internships after college are often seen as a bit tough to manage since they usually dont pay as much as a real job (depending on the state or country, at all), but if one is unable to get a job, this is a ticket to building a network.
4. The Interview
-All of that work from the previous 3 subjects have led you to this moment, your interview. Now this is a make or break it moment and it is important to understand the following:
*Is this a multiround interview? (Will there be more than one?)
*Who am I interviewing with (The interviewer, the company, and for what job)
*What is the purpose of the interview? (Is this a formality? A job description?)
-Now it is crucial to know your resume inside and out. You need to speak to what you know. So be sure to know it well.
-Always answer in a way that puts you in a more positive light. But dont try the “My greatest weakness is working too hard” they can smell that bulls*** a mile away. If you had to describe a negative, make it seem like you are working to fix it. This demonstrates you can look at yourself objectively and makes it seem like you are more of a genuine person. My go too response is “I have a habit of hyper focusing on a task until it is complete, but I have been working on focusing on what has the highest priority.”
-At the end of the interview, make sure to have questions prepared to ask the interviewer, and dont ask about salary. (Salary is asked after the job is offered, and usually you will usually hear about the salary range before going in, or the official number AFTER they give the offer). My go to question is asking “What are three traits someone would need to have to thrive in this position?” But do try and think of your own
-Dont be nervous, remember that this will likely not be the only interview you will have, especially with how desperate people are to get workers. So you will get a few. Just do your best, you got this.

Working the Job
You did it, all that hardwork and dedication had paid off, you got your first job.
Or maybe this is your second job. But most importantly, its work with a salary. The most tedious part is over, next is where the real work begins.
1. Adjusting to work
This period of time will you learning all you can about your job, this is the 30-60-90. AKA, the Trial period.
Show up a bit early and leave a bit later (unless your commute is over an hour. Then you just try to be as close to on time as possible.)
Your first 30 days is you finding out where everything is, how it works, who you interact with to get work done, and find the bathroom. This is where the expectations for you as an employee are at their most lenient. Dont take this as a rest opportunity, You are meant to learn as much as possible about how to do your job. (also connect with all the people on your team on Linkedin)
The next 30 days are your real test. Likely will be given your first real assignment if it wasnt given already. This is where you need to knock it out of the park. Crush that first assignment. Show everyone you are a pleasure to work with, Be compassionate yet driven. This is the ‘Prove yourself phase’
The last 30 days is the “Dealmaker” here is where you get to show your impact on the company. Your work must be consistent and must be solid. You can be allowed some error, but dont focus too much on it. This is where you show what you learned and are a part of the company. After you make it past this stage, you are likely to not have to worry about being fired. That doesnt mean your safe. It just means you are officially a part of the company.
-Now from here on out this is your chance to grow in however you want. Do you have ideas that you think would make things better? Give them a go, try discussing them with your boss, see what he/she thinks of them. You think there is a sector of the company you would work better in, use this position as an opportunity to grow closer and maybe transfer. Just be sure to keep your work consistent
2. Time to excel
So this is where you start career building. You want to make the big money. You want to be strong and independent with the fat stacks? You gotta work bitch.
You gotta take initiative, when there is an opportunity to shine to the higher ups, take it. Not every opportunity will be given. But sometimes there are ones that are gift wrapped.
Do NOT over extend yourself.
This is important, yes you want to stand out, but over extending yourself just to impress can cause your original work to suffer. You need to know your limits. And be willing to ask for help when needed.
Don’t talk smack about your boss, or other coworkers.
In the game of office politics, you never want to give someone an opportunity to make you look bad. Be respectful, and keep any complaints or issues you have with someone objective.
Take responsibility. Don’t try and blame others when something fails. Own up to it and ask for ways to improve. That shows character and in the game of career building, that’s a solid way to show you are capable and bold.

Leaving a job
So you find yourself working at this job and you realize. I hate it here. Now the first instinct is to quit and figure it out later. Or the term “Quiet Quitting” which is doing the bare minimum required and ride it out. Let me correct this by showing you what to do.
Figure out the Why.
Why do you hate your job now? It’s actually the simplest step. Usually boiling down to the following
1. My boss sucks.
Most employees end up quitting their jobs because of their boss. Either they are critical, take credit for your work, blame you for their mistakes, make you work late. Preventing you from taking vacation. Or insert specific reason here.
If the boss is the only reason you hate the job, then this is where you can start by requesting transfers to other areas of the company. Make an effort to find someone you wouldn’t mind working under, or find a way to show that your boss is violating your rights and agreements. If you can get a recording or emails to show to HR, than you can find ways of dealing with the horrible boss. Though if all else fails, then it’s time to consider leaving.
2. You need higher pay
If your company doesn’t give pay raises, and you find yourself not progressing a more favorable direction, then it’s time to discuss with your boss your concerns. Now if your boss is reasonable and not like a boss from reason 1, they will likely take into account the work you do and try to get you the raise.
But that’s only if you are working hard. Demanding more money but not doing anything more than what the job is asking won’t net you a pay raise unless you are exceeding expectations. In truth most companies would like to not lose workers, so voicing a concern would be a good way to get more cash.
Though if you are working hard and going above and beyond yet still not getting the money you deserve. It’s time to search for a place that will. Don’t quit yet, find the new job first and than leave.
It’s common curtesy to let the company know with a two week notice. That’s mainly so you don’t entirely burn connections. If you don’t care about the company, just quit.
Side note, and THIS IS CRUCIAL
If your company hears you are leaving and tries to match it. DONT take it. It’s a ploy. They will look for your replacement as soon as you accept the deal. They know you are finicky and looking. If you accepted a job offer, DONT BACK OUT.
3. This is not the career I want
You realize that this just isn’t where you want to be for the next couple of years. That’s fine. In fact, good on you for recognizing that you aren’t content with your work. But that begs the question, what Do you want.
At this time, stay working while you do research. No need to quit if you don’t know what it is you want. Maybe you want to be focused on different things but still in the same company. Transfers are more common and it’s easier to move and employee than lose one. So if you like where you work but not what you do, maybe see what other options there are in house before leaving.
But if you really want to go after something then find yourself peeping for that path. And when you are ready to go, then quit. Be polite and cordial. It wasn’t them it’s you. A two week notice would be the polite thing in this case.
The Farewell
Things aren’t working out with your current job and you’ve decided it’s time to leave. Ensure the following.
1. You have another opportunity lined up
2. You connected with everyone worth while
3. You have your letter/email of resignation ready to go
Now if your opportunity has a time before it starts. Great time for quiet quitting. You are basically out the door, you can take it easy. So enjoy these last moments before you leave and get ready for the next step in life.

Maximise the technology your company has to offer
Confirm the tools available to you while working online. In simple words, practising with new technology. It may also mean remembering to take home simple items from your desk or asking your employer for what you think you need.

Set expectations now with your boss and colleagues about communication
Agree where, when, and how to best communicate with your team to create awareness and enable efficiencies. Take the initiative to schedule meeting times and quick check-ins. There are many apps like Asana, Skype, or more to communicate with your mentor. Also, consider less email and more talking, primarily via video conferencing. Leave your video camera during meetings to show that you listen attentively. These gestures will help impress your mentor in your unpaid or paid internship.
Make networks 
Plan breaks or consider extending virtual meetings to account for the chit-chats you miss by not being in the office. Extra time in a meeting makes a difference in the quality and depth of a work discussion.
However, an online internship helps you network with your colleagues. You can ask about people’s work experiences, families or even the photos you now see on their walls. You can introduce your dog, share funny memes or just talk about how everyone is coping with the current situation. Mostly just be human.
Set working hours for work
Unplugging is just tough when you work from home. Work can bleed into every part of your day if you let it. Set consistent hours and socialise your schedule with colleagues. Get up, get out of your PJs and get dressed in the morning. Follow your regular morning routine as much as you can and login and start your working day.
You may not be commuting, but set aside time in the morning to help them log in and get started with their online lessons. 
Communicate those needs to your mentor. During the day, block out work time, reclaim your lunch, and get away from your desk. Take short breaks and don’t let working from home merge into your evening or family time. You can do all these in your unpaid or paid internship to make a habit for the future.
