Silver was given a name that starts with an S because games are usually put alphabetically in the shelves, and around 2006 it apparently seemed likely that he'd get a game of his own one day. However, in-universe I got the idea that when he was born, his parents were just kind of like

"Well, Sonic the hero had a name starting with an S, and so did that Shadow, so let's give our boy a name like that too! For good luck!" and so they named him Silver because it went well with his grey quills

And then Silv went on and became a world protector in two eras alike <3
