hope this isn't going to cause shit but i think tumblr users have a warped idea of what being "pretentious" means
#rambles#i see so many posts like ''i love being pretentious we need pretentious people keeping art and intellectualism alive''#it confuses me#''pretentious'' means putting on an unlikable exaggerated bravado and putting down other people#because you think you're more intelligent and your taste is inherently better than theirs#being pretentious is just obnoxious. it doesn't help people appreciate deeper art it just makes you annoying#99% of the time pretentious people aren't driven by the desire to make more people appreciate deeper/non mainstream art#they are driven by the desire to feel better than other people which is a very different thing#also that word is usually used in the sense that the person doesn't actually know what they're talking about#like a person who uses big words to sound smart without knowing what they mean or say they like classic literature w/o reading it#i'm not sure what the point is. if you want to say ''more people should appreciate deeper/non mainstream art'' just say that
