Also can i just add that i really appeciate how good the dub is! Its like an abridged series?? For a series thats already literally a goddamn canonical abridged series of the games already. Games that were already full of meta humour anyway. So the dub deciding to add EVEN MORE EVEN SILLIER JOKES just makes this an amazing sandwich of glorious everythingness. I havent seen this sort of phenomenon since Medabots!

And just i really love that everyone in the dub seems to be having loads of fun. It really gives the vibe that the reason all the additional jokes get added is because they got so carried away and did some improv in the studio. It feels like very 'inspired by yokai watch' type humour that 100% fits in with the series nd 100% would have just been in there already. Its nigh impossible to tell whats even a dub addition, like seriously half of the american pop culture references were already there! The goddamn 'whisper is now will smith for no reason' episode was already there in japanese and the dub just added some extra spoofing on the fact that will smith is kind of an old classic nowadays and a kid nate's age would only know him from his family tabloid news story stuff. Like thats just REALLY GOOD! A joke thats tributing the original sense of humour and adding a touch of localization to fit the country. And also making me spit out my drink all over the screen. ("Jaden's father?! He's like 90 now!")

And generally i just love when the game dub does this too! Its a bit more spotty in quality and has some errors but even when its making mistakes it still shows that the dubbers were aware of the spirit of the series and tried really hard to capture it. I know i blabber on about Dr Maddiman a lot but his yokai watch 2 quests in english are a great example of this! Theres a bunch of continuity errors early on but then when it gets to The Really Emotional Part the whole writing style just gives off a real vibe of "these guys played the original quest, cried their eyes out, and wanted to try even harder than usual to capture that emotion". There are a lot of lines in the dub that are like legit goddamn poetic?? They took a thing that was already super sad and wrote it like they goddamn wrote and rewrote every important line fifty times to really capture the EXACT level of crying for this man! Fuckin goddamn.. "Hans Full sustained my heart" "When my creation was complete I felt no joy, instead I only remembered another birth I'd been a part of..." "I promised my wife i would protect our son from a world of dangers, even if i had to bring it to heel" and goddamn even like STRATEGICALLY USING MORE SIMPLIFIED LINES! Dub maddiman has this thing of talking more formally than in the original but they go kind of rhythmic with it and build up a certain amount of lines before dropping some more informal statement in the middle. It adds a lot of characterization?? Like ending a goddamn sad monologue with "YOU GUYYYYYS" *goofy sobby face* And just GOD DAMN the way they ended such a sad quest with an uplifting motivational speech from madds about how you helped save him from himself and those memories were sad but he's so happy to have them back because he'd rather live with the memories of loving his family than be un-sad but empty inside. Fuckin HELL "I'll start again tommorow, and the next day! A thousand new beginnings!" *swirls my tears around in a fine wine glass and dies*

Apparantly in japanese the quest was just named 'team nocturne' aka his surname when he was human. Which is kind of a weird name? Like wouldnt 'nocturne family' make more sense than 'team'? There's rumours this was part of a dropped different plan for his yokai watch 3 plotline where he would have joined the whole superhero conflict and started a villain team, and honestly im glad we just let madds stand on his own and continue the process of redemption and SAD DADDO LOVES HE PET TURTLES also he actually did get to see his son again and seriously GOOD STUFF GOOD STUFF AMIRITE

Aaaaugh anyway thats why somehow a good joke in a dub episode spiralled back arpund to Time To Love Maddiman

And i am happy to know that its entirely possible the dubbers also had a soft spot for this man
