8. Is what you like to write the same as what you like to read?

I talked about this a little bit but I gave it some thought after trying to read last night and, if you'll allow me a moment to spiral, I think what it really comes down to is I do reading and writing for different reasons. they fulfill a different aspect of creativity for me. sure, they both end up in the same creative well, but the actual nerves that get tickled are different (this isn't scientific, dont call me on this, im bullshitting!). they're interwined, for sure, but very different. writing is more about processing and organizing my own viewpoints, my own feelings. reading is more about stretching those viewpoints. I want to be argued with, I love having a debate. and reading is having a long drawn out debate where I wish to be convinced of something. convince me this world is real. convince me what these characters are feeling is valid.

and so I think if I read the same as I wrote, I would essentially be reinforcing my own ideas. and while there's not anything inherently wrong with that (because yes sometimes I do just want an idea to be repeated to me over and over again) I dont think that's necessarily where I want my head to be always. and so I consciously make an effort to read outside of what I write. reading is breadth and writing is depth, if that makes sense.

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

ahhhh ok so im very bad at this because I dont think I have enough long form works to pull from so im gonna talk about magpie for a second because ive been thinking about it since I went back and read through what I had posted and subsequently forgot every single thread and where they were all headed (my notes do not make the path anymore enlightened) EXCEPT I remember having background declansey feelings.

so, long story short, magpie is an au where niall lives and builds his girllboss underground empire with declan and ronan and the story itself is sort of how that all falls apart for Varying Reasons. one of which is baby boy, patricide-fantasizing declan lynch who is an excellent right hand man, perfectly groomed successor, and seemingly loyal to a fault (shit oh my god this is kind of a major spoiler but I dont even know if ill finish the fic so OH WELL WE'RE TALKING ABOUT IT anyway) has been long conning niall's eventual downfall. which, for him, started out as simply disarming niall and effectively taking over the business himself, but as the story progress turns to him having to make the choice of if he's going to kill his dad or not. (he's totally down for it, btw. just. so much rage.)

ANYWAY all of this would have been happening in the background and further obfiscated by ronan's pov which is both dimissive and completely misunderstands basically everyone and their dynamics. I feel like I teasted a bit too much with the declansey mention at the beginning of this paragraph but yeah gansey is there and plotting with declan because *checks notes...discretely crumples notes and throws them in the trash* it's a work in progress. the point though is that I had an absolute blast weaving these little things into declan's interactions because. ronan isn't really wrong, per se. he just doesn't have the whole picture. and honestly that was such a fun little breadcrumb trail it might be the very reason I go back to writing the story even though I kind of spoiled the whole thing. yeah
