In Ancient Galar proposals were not 'will you marry me' Proposals were 'may I promise myself to you'.

Basically word choices matter. Not asking the other person to join them, rather if they may be allowed to share a life, share time, share love to this one person in specific. That they may have a destiny entertwined forever.

Marriage back then was a contract. Asking to marry was akin to signing a contract.

Promising yourself to someone is devotion and love and that is why when Mallacht wishes to propose they will ask with the utmost sincerity--

'May I promise myself to you?'
