Let’s Talk About Animal Crossing on the Switch
I can’t stop thinking about animal crossing on the switch. It’s taken up all the free time in my head. With E3 fast approaching the hype keeps building. So, I thought I’d make a post talking about my concerns and hopes for what’s coming. I tried to include things I don’t think other people have covered yet/ I haven’t seen anyone cover yet. But there will be some rehashed points.
To begin, i tried to vision what animal crossing on the switch would be like. In this conversion to the switch console, there were a few problems that came up. In this post I tried to organize my thoughts as best I could but you do have my apologies if this is messy.
Here goes my predictions, concerns, and hopes for Animal Crossing on switch:
something we’ve never seen before.
I’d like to first ask how different nintendo is going to make the game. Animal Crossing through its new releases has stayed pretty much the same but with a few tweaks in between, sometimes facing criticism for how almost nothing changes. But the switch console has a small history of shaking things up. with Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild, they gave Zelda fans an entirely different game that was very different than its previous by introducing an open world. With Super Mario Odyssey it appears very similar to super mario galaxy but in this game mario can fling his hat onto enemies and possess them ? ( I haven’t played odyssey but I know this is a new thing for the mario games). And my last example, Kirby Star Allies. I’ve never played any Kirby games but it appears to be that this is the first time multiplayer is being involved ? I could be wrong but that’s how its advertised. This all leads me to believe that something is going to be added. Some different amazing feature that will say, “Don’t buy the past Animal Crossing Games! Buy this one on the Switch ! It has *this * feature that the past animal crossing games don’t have!” this is my big prediction for the new game. i just don’t know what new thing they could offer..
my concerns.
1. Nintendo Online
One thing that would extremely effect my opinion on the whole thing is Nintendo Online. You know, having to pay for having access to online features? When Nintendo Online first showed up, I was very upset. The idea of having to pay for online services was crazy to me. This was because I don’t have a PlayStation or Xbox or at least haven’t played on one in years. Now I don’t really mind. $20 for 12 months? just a month after that initial purchase and it feels free because I got over the dent in my pocket. But I am just one person and this is how it was for me. I’m sure for some other people they are stuck playing offline because that price is something that they just can’t afford. Moving aside that for a second I’d like you to think about how many features in ACNL require internet. Dream addresses, going to a friends town, reading a qr code, etc.
Nintendo Online is something I didn’t think about until I considered solutions for different problems that came up while I made this post (that I’ll discuss later.) But, for example dream suites and visiting your friends town. It just feels weird to have to pay for things like that. But the more I think about it, the more I feel like that’s how it’s going to be.. sadly. Maybe they’ll introduce a new feature that would make paying for Nintendo Online worth it.
2. qr codes and designs
Currently on my 3ds it’s easy to work with patterns and qr codes. Making my own designs and taking pictures of other peoples qr codes is really easy. But a Nintendo switch presents a couple problems there. First is the obvious problem, the switch doesn’t have a camera. But I’ll tell you what, your phone does. I have Spaltoon 2 and it can connect to the Nintendo Switch app and that app can do a lot. So maybe I’d need to read qr codes with my phone instead. But there’s still a problem there. I usually use my phones screen to read a qr code, and I’m sure many other people do that too. There’s a solution to that as well but at that point it’s just less convenient than new leaf for the 3ds, and from a business standpoint, I’m supposed to be wanting to play the switch version more that the 3ds. So here’s where I remembered Nintendo Online. Maybe they could make an online database of designs and then qr codes become out of the question. Say, you go into the able sisters shop and theres an option to browse designs online. Kind of like how in the sims 4 you can have a profile and upload houses or families. I’m not really sure how much I like this option but it’s possible? Maybe. Alright now second problem with qr codes and designs, making them. Like I mentioned earlier, I have splatoon 2 and drawing on that is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. But making a design in animal crossing is just pixel art so maybe it wont be that bad.
3. Save Files
The Nintendo Switch let’s you have multiple profiles on one console. Hopefully each one of those profiles get’s their own game. I don’t want to have to share a single town with everyone who uses my switch.
and that does it for my concerns. here’s my...
Hopes and Rambles:
Since the Switch only has one screen, the user interface will probably be like Animal Crossing City Folk from the Wii. It’s been forever since I played that. What im really curious about is the camera position. since there are two joy sticks on the switch, will the camera view be like breath of the wild or odyssey ? Something to think about.
different skin tones! maybe asking where you’re from to determine a skin tone. i know you could get tanner in new leaf but come on. easier way please.
a separate pocket for tools.
I wish I didn’t have to go to my home or pull up my phone to see what an item or shirt looks like. I would like new sprites but that little leaf is so iconic I doubt that would change.
New furniture. I know there’s already so many sets but I don’t think more could hurt. i love the classic and sloppy series.
im so curious as to what the title is gonna be and how the story is gonna progress. are timmy and tommy gonna be grown up ? is tortimer die?
i think my biggest concern is whos mayor. i really just want control. control over what the town looks like. for me the more control the better.

If you don’t understand why there’s so many dislikes and uproar about Nintendo’s online service that’s launching tomorrow, let me just provide ya’ll a list, because I feel terrible for the majority of folks that don’t know. And no, this isn’t about the price, it’s about what we’re paying for.
Disclaimer: Let me know if any of this information is wrong with evidence, and I’ll update the info. Everything will be under the Read More so that misinformation doesn’t spread and because frankly, it’s long.
The overall comparisons!
Note: There is a bit of bias here because I am angry and because I don’t care about NES games. Also not everything I’ve listed are things I care about but I know would bother someone out there so they’re in this list. Also here’s the links for the American and Japanese trailers if you’re curious how the dislike ratio has become since this post.
**Price per year**
❎ $60 (Xbox) 🅿️ $60 (PlayStation) 🆘 $20 (Switch Online Service)
**Servers**
❎ Dedicated server 🅿️ Dedicated server 🆘 Peer to Peer WiFi (your own internet server)
**Online and Party Chat**
❎ Need service to play online however, you don’t need it to access apps and services. Membership required for Party chat (thru the system itself). 🅿️ Need service to play online however, you don’t need it to access apps and services or Party chat (thru the system itself). Members also gain a few extra features, including automatic downloads of game updates, early access to some betas, and extended game trials of certain titles. Allows you to share one subscription with all users of the console. 🆘 Need service to play online. Splatoon becomes unplayable offline. No apps available (Netflix, YouTube, browser). Requires smart phone and app in order to Party chat. No Netflix, YouTube, or browser. No themes or messaging.
**Cloud Saves**
❎ Cloud saving for all games as well as free usb transfers. Cloud is also available Free to Everyone and not just paying members. 🅿️ Cloud saving for all games as well as free usb transfers. Unsubscribed members cloud saves are kept for a 6 month grace period. 🆘 Cloud saves for games except Splatoon 2 and Pokémon. No way to back up data otherwise, despite SD card saving being available on Wii, Wii U, and 3DS. Edit: One week after the service launched, we finally got information that there is indeed a 6 month grace period for your cloud saves if you’ve unsubscribed. (Technically 1 year, 6 months, 22 days for this information if we’re counting from when the switch launched.)
**Free Games**
❎ 2 free Xbox one games and 2 Xbox 360 games every month, all new triple A quality. If you unsubscribe, you’ll lose access to these games. However if you resub, you will have access to them and their saves again. Xbox 360 games can be kept regardless of subbing. (Note: xbox 1 is backwards compatible that’s why I’m listing Xbox 360 info) 🅿️ 2 free new triple A games every month. If you unsubscribe, you’ll lose access to these games. However if you resub, you will have access to them and their saves again. 🆘 20 NES games. That’s it. Just these twenty 33 year old games with “more to come”. However they will cycle. When 20 new ones come the old 20 are gone and you do not own them. If you are away from wifi for 7 days (whether that be a storm or a vacation), you cannot play the NES games you paid for. Edit: The co op plays with friends seems seamless and fun for games I don’t plan on playing. WARNING: Do not use the CRT filter on the NES games because they’ll have a temporary “burn in” effect on your switch screen due to how the pixels vibrate. This eventually goes away on its own over time (and not by turning on and off your system) but I wouldn’t chance it, personally.
**Game Discounts or Special Offers**
❎ Many discounts for members but there are a few sales for non members too. 🅿️ The store regularly has discounts for everyone. However members may get a better deal. If a game is 60% off for a regular, it could be 80% off for a member. 🆘 So far the only special offers are NES controllers (only available if you’re a member of the Online service. This means you’ll be paying $80 total) and exclusive sports gear for Splatoon 2.
**Other Info** 🆘

A personal rant from a Splatoon fan! 🦑🐙
When I’d heard about the online being mandatory for Splatoon 2, I was saddened but I understood, especially under the assumption that I would be paying for servers to run to improve disconnectivity drops. I had no problems with just that. And the price was affordable for me to boot.
Then I learned that I cannot back up my save data. I heard about 3rd party docks bricking switches and losing saves, of people who’s switches were stolen at E3′s and losing their saves.
Then I learned that Splatoon 2′s saves aren’t tied to the account or to Nintendo but to each individual switch itself.
Then I found out cloud saves will not work on Splatoon 2 and upcoming Pokemon games “to prevent cheating”. So not only can I not back up by SD card like we have been for the last 12 years, but I can’t save my 700+ hours of Splatoon at all. All to prevent save scumming... despite there already being plenty of Splatoon hackers already that do a lot worse than save scumming. And there are solutions to these problems so that cloud saving is possible for every game!
I just can’t protect my Splatoon 2 data... Not all the weapons I’ve bought, every outfit I’ve bought and leveled up, not my ranks. The only game I would actually care about losing my progress cannot be backed up.
Then I found out I’m not even paying for a better server. It’s going to continue to be peer to peer using our own wifi.
I do not play other online games. Sure some games I would love to play with friends like minecraft and dragon quest builders 2 and pokemon, but I can live without it since local multiplayer is still free. Splatoon however becomes unplayable offline. You cannot even go to the store to buy new outfits. The only part of Splatoon I could play offline are the single player mode and DLC but I’ve already 100% those.
The Splatoon series is my favorite... It’s the first time a game made me feel good about myself and my aim and actually made me improve myself irl. I don’t mind paying for online if I’m actually going to get something out of it. It’s been over a year of delaying this online and they haven’t changed anything for me.
I’ll probably cave in the end... I just love Splatoon so much and I want to play all the new updates and keep getting better. But for now, I’ll try to boycott for as long as possible, maybe use my 1 free week trial for the October splatfest if it’s spooky. But until then, I hope people who will boycott with me will return to Splatoon 1 until Nintendo adds something. I don’t expect this boycott or our message to get to Nintendo in the end. I think there are already too many people blinded by the cheap price and lack of information and upcoming Smash game. I don’t want to pay for something like this.
What would make me feel better about this service:
I just want to know that I won’t lose my Splatoon progress if my switch gets damaged or stolen.
I want confirmation that my Splatoon progress is tied to my account not my system.
I also think Cloud Saves in general should be free for all if there’s no other way to backup saves. (I would say give us SD card backups but I don’t believe games like Splatoon and Pokemon should have those because that’s local save scumming and we don’t want that.) Right now, Nintendo is the only ones charging us to protect our saves.
I want a word from Nintendo that servers will improve in the future, otherwise Peer to Peer should be free and dedicated servers should be paid for. I know for sure that hardcore Smash players would pay for dedicated servers.
Personally, I don’t mind about NES (because I won’t play them) or the phone app (splatnet2 is great and I can just keep using discord or like the actual phone). HOWEVER, I really really need a real way to block/ban players in splatoon 2 in-game and not using the App, (as well as a way to Un-yeah a post in the lobby from accidental clicks but that’s more a splatoon problem than a phone problem.)
Sure what I asked for is taking out all the good stuff from the Online service but imagine this. Imagine if Switch Online actually had things worth paying for. Imagine your themes and browser apps and mutual best friend messaging. Imagine games other than NES coming to that service they’re providing eventually. Imagine bigger sales available on eshop that notifies you when games on your wishlist are on sale. It’s so cheap many more people would buy and keep a subscription without all this controversy. It’s taken them a year to pull this off and they’ve got nothing for it. Why? Because they know people will pay for it anyway.
I want to be wrong about all this, trust me. At the very least, Nintendo is at fault for making about 18k people really really upset and anxious with poor communication.
FAQ
“You knew you were going to have to pay for a service so you shouldn’t have bought a multiplayer game like Splatoon.”
I was under the impression for over a year with no other info that I would be paying for dedicated servers along with the Online.
“Stop complaining, this was a really long free trial and you knew that.”
Yep! And they kept delaying it. And delaying it. And delaying it. So I think we were all assuming Nintendo had a big surprise they were delaying all this for to make it worth the wait. It’s not.
“It’s $20 a year, that’s way cheaper than the competition. Of course it’s not going to have a lot of offers.”
Yes, I agree! But for me this is less than what I expected and trust me I was not expecting much. This is less than the basics.
“So you bought a $300 switch, $60 game, $20 DLC, and $70 pro controller but you can’t pay $20 a year? Sure.”
I want to pay $20 a year for a service not a hostage situation. Sorry if I seem upset about having a gun to my head.
“The Wii U was a failure. Nintendo needs the money. Do you want them to go bankrupt?”
Don’t sympathize with billion dollar companies like they have feelings. We have problem of treating large companies like people instead of money producing companies, especially if there’s nostalgia attached. “Don’t be mean to Nintendo, they’re having a rough time.” The sooner more people realize this, the better. And no they’re not in need of money. They have $10.5 billion in the bank. For some perspective that’s 35 million switches. For further perspective if just one second was a dollar, that’s 333 years. They’re fine.
“Why are you making such a big deal out of this?”
Because I want Nintendo to succeed. I don’t want them to have EA levels of controversy. I don’t want them to worm their way to EA levels of anti-consumerism. We already have loot boxes in a free mobile game. And now the free online we’ve had for 12 years is under a paywall. I’m not mad about either of these. I just don’t want it to get any worse than that. I don’t want Nintendo to think they can get away with the bare minimum just because “they’ll buy it anyway.” Nintendo has been making great leaps forward with the switch but things like this severely set them back.
#nintendo online#splatoon 2#vote with your wallets#the animation for the service was cute but the service itself angers me rn#make it better so i can play splatoon again with peace of mind#i honestly just feel like luigi throughout the entire trailer#i'll probably come back to this and make the list less biased but gosh i feel like im being ripped off#i literally got selected for a random survey from nintendo just now lol i think it's for the site itself tho

Why I feel the hate directed at Nintendo Switch Online is largely overblown and unwarrented
Now lately I have seen a lot of crap funneled at Switch’s online services and having thought about I am starting to feel all this hate and vitriol directed at the dang thing is starting to get out of hand and now it seems like people are literally searching for any excuse they can find to trash the Switch Online service and proclaim it sucks at the top of their lungs
Okay first off the price. Seriously 20 bucks for a whole year literally a tank of gas. If you have a decent paying job then you honestly should have no trouble affording 20 dollars for 12 months
You cannot back up cloud saves to certain game:. Okay why exactly are people so shocked at this. In Pokemon Game Freak never let you back up your saves on 3DS so why did you expect them to be any different here. Hell even with Wii you usually could not back up games that had wi fi capability. With Splatoon 2 Nintendo’s statement is mainly pertaining to anti cheat purposes which is probably the most logical explanation they could come up with the average person but the real reason I think requires one to go into a bit more technical detail. The biggest hurdle probably lies in the fact that with Splatoon 2 data is primarily stored locally which with cloud saving could potentially lead to a lot of data consistency headaches which is usually why most online games store the majority of their data on server to begin with. Now people will probably say Oh but why don’t they store their data server side like everyone else!?” The thing is with Splatoon 2′s current state that would probably be very difficult to implement and even if they did they would probably have to make it so that you need a persistent internet connection to even play the game which would kinda defeat one of the main selling points of Switch.
Cloud Saves will be lost when your subscription expires. Again why is this such a big deal? It’s pretty much the same way with PS+ Why is it a bad thing with Nintendo Switch?. There is even an automatic renewal option for the people who are too lazy to go and renew manually
Just 20 NES Games: This is why I am often baffled by how bad peoples reading comprehension is on the internet. Nintendo already stated the selection of classic games will be expanded as time goes on. Also before you keep whining that Nintendo is just selling the same old NES games over and over you really have to understand that Emulation is not as simple as it looks. They are starting with NES games first because NES is literally one of the easiest systems to emulate for in this day and age. Also I think it’s pretty much a given we will get SNES games in the future if the recent OS update leak is any indication. If you were really expecting Gamecube games day 1 you were just setting yourself up for disappointment
Also the people complaining about paying for online clearly do not understand why online on consoles is generally a paid service to begin with. You people need to realize running and maintaining an online service is far from cheap and generally console manufacturers tend to typically rely on game and subscription sales for the majority of their profits since they usually lose money on each system they make. Nintendo has often been an exception to this as they usually do not sell their systems at a loss which is why they have largely been able to get away with free online for so long. Of course the reality is they have to pay for those cloud servers somehow. The reason PC has been able to get away with being free for so long is due to the highly open nature of PC gaming. Plus with a lot of PC games such as Counter Strike and TF2 you can basically use your own system as a dedicated server which keeps maintenance costs down. Valve has no reason to charge for Steam considering how they have the PC market practically cornered and they already make plenty of money from steam sales as it is.
I would not say Nintendo is incompetent perhaps just unprepared. It would not surprise me if they are in the midst of working out how much cloud space will be needed exactly considering this the first time they have done such a thing. It’s important to remember Nintendo is primarily a video game and toy company as opposed to Microsoft who is a major software giant and the developer of one of the most wildly used operating systems in the world or Sony who is one of the worlds largest manufacturers of consumer electronics. Both of those companies probably have far greater resources, infrastructure, and financial muscle plus MS has years of experience with internet infrastructure and services which is why they were so successful with Xbox Live to begin with.
I have nothing against criticism really but a lot of the criticism I have seen directed at this online service is far from what I would call constructive. Spamming Nintendo’s own youtube page with dislikes or constantly screaming about how you don’t like it will not solve anything. At this point I realize people will only be satisfied with Nintendo’s online service if it’s a 100% copy of XBL or PS+ Saying Nintendo is behind the times makes no sense either considering how they have been experimenting with online services since the 90s really

What is Motion Graphics? – The Complete Guide
What exactly do 2D motion graphics mean ? And what do they actually serve to accomplish?
2D Motion Graphics is a kind of digital animation that offers motion (and the feeling of living) to pictures. The images can be directly derived by digital resources. They could be original art or photographs or vectors etc.basically any digital image can be used as a basis for. The real power is in the manipulation of the image(s) which transforms an image of a person to a dynamic persona, or even a stock photo into the form of a video clip that is pulsating or even a photograph to a moving video clip and so on. Utilizing 2D Motion Graphics, a designer can design complete video commercials, short films and more.
What is motion graphics?
What's the most important advantage of two-dimensional motion graphics?
This is a significant benefit that was not available until recently. It's possible to do this using an ordinary computer. With a PC with adequate specs and a high-quality processor, you can create quality animations. There's also advantages 2D Motion Graphics has over other forms in animation. Traditional animation can be slow and be difficult to convert to digital. Although you can make 3D animation using personal computers it will require more time, which means processing power.
What industries benefit from 2-D motion graphic technology?
Each and every individual. Absolutely. It's the cheapest alternative for anyone looking to stand out with video. 2-D motion Graphics are used in advertisements or film as well as explainer videos and technology video, television commercials and many other. Every media business requires 2D motion Graphics content.
Where to Begin
The most crucial thing you should make is to select the correct software you require learn. The majority of influencers and animators recommend learning about their Adobe program. I totally agree with the advice. It is my opinion that Adobe Creative Suite is the industry standard, and is an all-in-one solution that covers every aspect of 2D Motion Graphics Animation.
how do I become a motion graphic designer
The software you'll need to be paying attention to is:
Adobe After Effects. This is the program that you employ for animating stages.
Adobe Illustrator. It is where you can create vector images (images which can be scaled to any size, with no loss of quality) to be used for animation.
Adobe Photoshop. Everyone has been familiar with Photoshop. It is true that it permits you to modify and edit images, but it also lets users to create raster images that can become animated.
Adobe Premiere Pro. It will allow you to record everything you've done in video format by using this.
Alongside Adobe Suite Another helpful tool to master could include Cinema 4D. It's not an Adobe product, but it's a popular one and is worth keeping track of. However, it doesn't require an expert user to use it.

This gif is the kind of imagery that gets our attention and gets us all wondering about what is going to happen to the people who did these jobs now being done by robots.
There are a lot of people wondering about the answer to this question, and drawing conclusions like 47% of all current jobs are at risk of being automated within 20 years. It's also possible such estimates are conservative because according to this recent report, the work being done by robots is actually growing faster than predicted.
The amount of jobs now done by robots will more than double in the next 10 years. (10% to 23%)
The term for this growing phenomenon is technological unemployment. Not everyone believes in it though. Right now, it's actually about 50/50.
Something known as "the Luddite Fallacy"is what tends to be a common response to any notion of technological unemployment, and any suggestions we might find ourselves in trouble unless we prepare for its effects. It's what allows someone to watch Humans Need Not Apply and think, "That's silly. People have been saying technology will eliminate jobs for centuries now and it just hasn't happened. So it never will. New jobs will always be created, and technology will always make everything cheaper anyway, so no worries."
Regarding this belief, there are a few other beliefs we should be sure to consider as well...
"Luddites were afraid of technology!"
About that, we've got Luddites all wrong.
The Luddites weren't technophobes. They were labor strategists. "This strategic interpretation of the Luddite movement is confirmed by the fact that the workers often destroyed only those machines which were turning out faulty goods," Boudon wrote. "It was still true, of course, that a worker who went on strike could easily be replaced by somebody from the army of unemployed people willing to be strike-breakers, at a time when nascent trade-unionism was harshly suppressed. Since machine-breaking brought the factory to a halt, it was not only a functional substitute for striking, it was also much more effective."
They didn't break machines out of fear. They broke machines as a tactic.
"You futurist types have always talked about mass unemployment due to technology and are always wrong!"
The logic that because something has always been the case it always will be, can be really dangerous logic to cling to.
Examples from people who might want to reconsider the use of this logic:
"Chimps love me. I hear they can be dangerous, but a chimp has never once ripped my face off, so it obviously never will."
"Condoms? I've never once gotten an STD or anyone pregnant. Obviously that will always be the case."
"I used to always wear my seat belt but I've never actually gotten into a car accident, so obviously that's never going to happen. So, why bother?"
Just because something hasn't been perceived by us as happening, doesn't mean it's not happening or that it never will happen.
Believe it or not, yes it really is different this time because it's already happening.
"But new jobs will always be created!"
We are actively experiencing job loss due to technology RIGHT NOW. It's just harder to see, because we're not looking at a bunch of walking talking robots, but mostly software. And the job loss we are experiencing isn't necessarily in the form of 0 hours of work available, but in the form of part-time jobs, underpaid jobs, and freelance work.
It also seems to rarely occur to anyone, that when we say jobs haven't been reduced by technology, it's because we've been making up bullshit jobs to replace the ones we're eliminating because we're the ones still requiring jobs to exist. When we no longer require jobs to exist, it seems likely we'll reconsider this behavior.
Another thing people seem to fail to understand, is that the new jobs we're creating by technology can themselves be more easily automated or globalized.
New Job Example:
Web design is a newer job. It hasn't been around very long. However, it's already easier for people to create their own websites, and it's also easy for someone in India or China to design a website at a much lower cost than others can possibly bid who have higher costs of living. A barber in the US doesn't compete with barbers in India, but a website designer does. And the ease of website creation tools makes web designers less necessary, even though this was a job that was JUST created recently.
This last part is what a Luddite Fallacy article like this gets right. We need to create flexibility in the labor market so that when jobs are lost and new jobs (that hopefully aren't bullshit) are created, people can switch from one to the other. And when those new jobs then go away, people can transition again. We should make a point of making these transitions as quick and painless as possible. Denmark does with its "Flexisecurity" policies, which make it the best for business in the world right now.
So basically, even if the Luddite Fallacy is correct, we still need policies that make transitioning from job to job easier, with no one falling into poverty between these jobs.
"But technology always makes everything cost less!"
This belief that everything is going to get cheaper, and therefore everything will be a-okay, it's just not happening. Basic needs are getting more expensive, and we're also spending more on technology like smartphones, not less. After decades of tech growth, we even have less discretionary income, not more, even with two adults working, instead of one.
“The American middle class has absorbed a steep increase in the cost of health care and other necessities as incomes have stagnated over the past half decade, a squeeze that has forced families to cut back spending on everything from clothing to restaurants. Health-care spending by middle-income Americans rose 24% between 2007 and 2013, driven by an even larger rise in the cost of buying health insurance, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of detailed consumer-spending data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That hit has been accompanied by increases in spending on other necessities, including food eaten at home, rent and education, as well as the soaring cost of staying connected digitally via cellphones and home Internet service. With income growth sluggish, discretionary spending on things like clothing and movies, live shows and amusement parks has given way.”
If we read news like this, and then think, "Oh hey, but 3D-printers are going to make everything super cheap, so even though the costs of basic goods and services are rising, it's 3D-printing that will save our hides," then we also need to consider how our incomes are going to look when everyone has their own personal factory.
If I no longer need to buy shower curtains, what happens to the companies that sell shower curtains, and their distributors, and their manufacturers, and all of their employees, and all of the other businesses that rely on all of the income generated from all of this?
As long as people have to spend money on their most basic needs, and have to work in the labor market to earn the income required to meet them, then a big problem still exists, no matter how cheap 3D-printed goods become.
What it all comes down to though is this right here:
The people who think those like CGP Grey and the rest of us are Chicken Littles screaming about the sky falling, are looking at the left half of the image and drawing the conclusion that the lines will continue their paths without intersecting.
What people tend to fail to understand is the exponential growth capability of technology because we're not really wired to conceive this type of growth. Exponential growth is hard to wrap our heads around. Here's a famous example in the form of a story:
“When the creator of the game of chess showed his invention to the ruler of the country, the ruler was so pleased that he gave the inventor the right to name his prize for the invention. The man, who was very clever, asked the king this: that for the first square of the chess board, he would receive one grain of wheat, two for the second one, four on the third one, and so forth, doubling the amount each time. The ruler, arithmetically unaware, quickly accepted the inventor's offer, even getting offended by his perceived notion that the inventor was asking for such a low price, and ordered the treasurer to count and hand over the wheat to the inventor. However, when the treasurer took more than a week to calculate the amount of wheat, the ruler asked him for a reason for his tardiness. The treasurer then gave him the result of the calculation, and explained that it would take more than all the assets of the kingdom to give the inventor the reward. The story ends with the inventor being beheaded.”
So how many grains of wheat ended up being calculated by just doubling a single grain 64 times? 18,446,744,073,709,551,615, or about 18.5 quintillion aka 18.5 billion billion.
Exponential growth happens amazingly fast. It catches us humans by surprise. For those paying attention, some pretty unbelievable headlines are already being made, and they are appearing with greater frequency. Deep learning by machines is real and is already being used, which opens the door for all kinds of jobs to be automated.
We are on the right half of the above image now. Technology is already eliminating jobs faster than new jobs can be created. The intersection point is going to happen. It's inevitable. And when it does, we sure as shit better be ready for it or else "job creator" heads might start rolling.
And why should any heads roll, when we should all be better off thanks to technology anyway?

What's New In Tabletop Gaming (June Edition)
Compulsive video gaming is a modern-time psychological disorder that specialists tell WebMD is now a lot more popular. If you're trying to decide between purchasing a console or gaming Computer, we'll break down each portion of the PC vs. console debate to help you decide what's best for you. Literally everything, we didn't miss any to make our website the house of ROM GAMES. Instead of a monograph and the display of the history as lineal narrative, the task of the historian could be produced as a video game. The glowing light bar located along the front of each controller helps identify player one from player two, and can even add a little atmospheric lighting for certain games. It depends on the capability of the games console itself. Trying to get players to buy a device to be able to sell them video games and services through the device is kind of how console generations function, which means Spencer is talking about a much broader method to think about how exactly gaming consoles operate as platforms.
For instance, if couch co-op is normally your factor, you can pretty much count out a gaming PC. Yes, it's theoretically feasible for connecting multiple controllers and look for a game that lets two (or more) people play together, but it's more trouble than it's worthy of on both counts. Yes, but this most recent craze of spending 4 hours watching somebody else play video games, ugh. There are many scanning requirements, including whether to check if the ROMs are completely lacking, whether there are duplicates, and whether certain files are unnecessary. Looking back at gaming history, Nintendo has had an awful launch lineup with regards to its consoles. The most recent console from Sony is the PS4 Pro and it'll be a must-have for those devoted to the brand, although the PS4 Slim is also an option.
Targeted at adults and older kids, they feature full assistance restaurants with complete liquor bars and also have a multitude of video game and hands on electronic gaming options. Nintendo's upcoming subscription provider, Nintendo Switch Online, should bolster membership spending in 2018. Sure, you won't have the ability to play couple of first-party titles on Sony's end, but everything else helps it be over-and often (barring advantage cases like Arkham Knight ) in better condition than the console versions. Nintendo released the Super Nintendo (SNES) in 1991, with just under 50 million products sold to date. But Monday's sale stands out for what appears to be an initial for Humble: a whole ebook sale dedicated to video game history. Other rare collector's items on display add a Nintendo World Championships 1990 gray cartridge, and the initial papers and prototypes of the Magnavox Odyssey, the initial home gaming system.
Since older video games are no more distributed or marketed, they are considered abandonware and are therefore DMCA exempt. Now, if you are wondering which system you should get, make sure to check out our PS4 Pro vs XBOX One X content. The most obvious advantage consoles have over PCs is price. There exists a real concern that games are being treated as a homogeneous whole with no understanding of the complexity and diversity of the digital worlds, which offer increasingly sophisticated stories, characters, competition, public connections, and fun. First released in Japan on October 21, 1998, the overall game Boy Color (abbreviated as GBC) added a (somewhat smaller) color display screen to a form factor similar in proportions to the overall game Boy Pocket. Arcade game effectively needed to be remade for consoles which usually meant lowering the quality in some way to make up for the hardware limitations.
MIT Press, which includes been publishing game-research essays and books since 1998, has packed 18 of its gaming-specific ebooks right into a single $15 bundle (In the event you elect to pay less, you can pick up fewer books at the $1 and $8 tiers.) It isn't a thorough collection from the publisher, but as an entry point to the extremely analytical and tech-weighty collection, this Humble Video game Studies Bundle is specially good at offering even more of MIT Press's classic titles, particularly analyses of varied game consoles throughout their active lifespans. The original 3DS came out back in 2011, however the New” in New Nintendo 2DS XL” refers to a 2014 upgrade that added a supplementary analog nub, two extra shoulder buttons at the top of the gaming console, Amiibo support , a more powerful processor, and more memory.
"Call of Duty," "Grand Theft Car" and "Fortnite" are simply some of the super-popular video games which have captured the imaginations of gamers all over the world. We've got the best selection of video games, gaming consoles and components anywhere. In 1982, Atari released a far more advanced console based on its 8-bit pc line, the Atari 5200, which failed to perform along with its predecessor. The VES continued to be sold at a revenue after 1977, and both Bally (with their house Library Computer in 1977) and Magnavox (with the Odyssey² in 1978) brought their very own programmable cartridge-structured consoles to the marketplace. In its most recent revision to a disease classification manual, the World Health Organization stated Monday that compulsively playing video gaming now qualifies as a new mental health condition.
Most monitors offer better quality images than similarly-priced TVs, with higher contrast ratios, faster response situations, less ghosting, and much less image interference from pesky manufacturer features like de-judder results that aim for an unnatural smoother” image. The Playstation produced waves big style, with the release of one of the very most beloved JRPG's ever Final Fantasy VII.”, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night” gave 2D gaming a new lease on life giving us the Metroidvania genre. After all, consoles make up the bulk of the gaming industry. Genuine gamers use PC's. Step 40: Start the Internet Archive ROM Launcher for the first time. The statistics on children with developmental problems, mental health diagnoses, becoming medicated, overweight, out of shape, failing in school or experiencing significant behavior issues are staggering, simply because are screen-time stats.
The first age ranking system for video gaming which becomes a standard 10 years later. Do not skip these steps, or your video games will not launch. One word of caution: The 3DS isn't Nintendo's only, or also most recent portable game console. Dumping ROMs from arcade machines, which in fact are highly customized PCBs , often requires specific setups for each machine along with a big amount of expertise. With this product, players could connect to and control their game by way of tapping and doodling in a variety of levels and menus. Because of its widespread usage for gambling, ROM cartridges were frequently colloquially referred to as a game cartridge. According to a screenshot uploaded by Saint, the private collector threatened to pull the whole folder of content material from the directory and prevent uploading games altogether if anyone leaked Labyrinthe.
I must say, it really annoys me how attached kids are to their video games and phones and whatnot. Ralph Baer's initial design had called for a huge row of switches that could allow players to carefully turn on and off certain elements of the console (the Odyssey lacked a CPU ) to create slightly different video games like tennis, volleyball, hockey, and chase. All video games look and play great on Xbox One X. But go for titles are optimized to consider benefit of the world's most effective console. with "Mario Tennis Aces" being the latest. While you can find tons of RetroPie ROMs on any Torrent site, remember that you should not download any copyrighted titles. For more amusing, accessible and easy-to-play video games, discover live internet casino at its greatest with the delights of genuine dealers, ground-breaking gameplay and the pleasures of actual wins.
This was subsequently reversed prior to the system came out, and regardless of the recent advances in streaming technology, moving forward in this direction without giving players the option to own their games could result in similar pushback. That said, PCs still provide largest selection of online flash games, and some of the most popular online games, rpg-rom.com such as for example World of Warcraft , are unique to the Computer. Of course, there are plenty of things to consider before making a decision on a gaming system. This huge change in the gaming market toward mobile, specifically in Southeast Asia, hasn't only widened gaming demographics, but also pushed video gaming to the forefront of media attention. You'll have access to cross-platform titles, indie games and re-releases from past consoles, along with unique PlayStation titles like Driveclub and Uncharted.
In one research, players who were immersed in fast-paced video games were 25 percent quicker in reacting to queries about an image that they had just seen compared to non-players. Also known as game(s) console, video gaming console, video-game console. Unity Tutorial Part 1: Getting Started
This is an excerpt taken from Chapter 1, “Hello Unity” of our book Unity Games by Tutorials, newly updated for Unity 2018.1, which walks you through creating four Unity games from scratch — and even shows you how to develop for VR in Unity. Enjoy!
To say game development is a challenge would be the understatement of the year.
Until recently, making 3D games required low-level programming skills and advanced math knowledge. It was akin to a black art reserved only for super developers who never saw the sunlight.
That all changed with Unity. Unity has made game programming into a craft that’s now accessible to mere mortals. Yet, Unity still contains those complicated AAA features so, as you grow as a developer, you can begin to leverage them in your games.
Every game has a beginning and so does your learning journey — and this one will be hands-on. Sure, you could pore over pages and pages of brain-numbing documentation until a lightbulb appears above your head, or you can learn by creating a game.
You obviously would prefer the latter, so in this tutorial, you’ll build a game named Bobblehead Wars.
In this game, you take the role of a kickass space marine, who just finished obliterating an alien ship. You may have seen him before; he also starred in our book 2D iOS & tvOS Games in a game called Drop Charge.
After destroying the enemy ship, our space marine decides to vacation on a desolate alien planet. However, the aliens manage to interrupt his sun tan — and they are out for blood. After all, space marines are delicacies in this part of the galaxy!
This game is a twin-stick shooter, wherein you blast hordes of hungry aliens that relentlessly attack:
You’ll toss in some random powerups to keep gameplay interesting, but success lies in fast footwork and a happy trigger finger.
Installing and Running Unity
Before you can take on aliens, you need to download the Unity engine itself. Head over to the following URL: http://unity3d.com/get-unity. You’ll see a page with many options from which to choose:
You can go Pro if you’d like, but it’s excessive at this stage of your journey. For this tutorial, you only need the free version. In fact, you can even release a complete game and sell it on Steam with the free version.
Before Unity 5, certain engine features were disabled in the free version. Now, all those closed-off features are now available to everybody who uses the personal version.
In case you are curious, here are what the three options mean:
Unity Personal: This edition allows you to create a complete game and distribute it without paying Unity anything. However, your company must make less than $100,000 per fiscal year. The other catch is that each game will present a “Made by Unity” splash screen that you can’t remove.
Unity Plus: This edition costs $35 per month. It comes with performance-reporting tools, the Unity Pro skin and some additional features. This version requires your company to make less than $200,000 per year, and it allows you to either disable or customize the “Made by Unity” splash screen.
Unity Pro: This is the highest tier available. It costs $125 per month and comes with useful Unity services, professional iOS and Android add-ons, and has no splash screen. There is no revenue cap either.
There’s also an enterprise edition for large organizations that want access to the source code and enterprise support.
Note: Recently Unity switched from a “perpetual” model, wherein you paid a one-time fee, to a subscription-based model.
Under Personal, click Try Personal and download the software from the following page.
Give it a moment to download then double-click it to start the installation.
Click through the installer until you reach the following screen where you select components:
Note: You can develop with Unity equally well on a Windows or Mac machine.
The screenshots in this tutorial are made on Windows, because that is what the majority of Unity developers use (mainly because Windows is a more popular gaming platform).
If you are developing on the Mac, your screenshots may look slightly different, but don’t worry — you should still be able to follow along with this tutorial fine. Several of this tutorial’s technical editors are Mac users and have used the tutorials successfully while reviewing this tutorial! :]
By default, you should select the Unity Engine, Documentation and Standard Assets. Here’s why they are significant:
Unity Engine: This is the powerhouse that will drive all of your games. When you update the engine, keep this — and only this — selected to avoid downloading unnecessary files.
Don’t worry if your version number is slightly different than what we’ve shown — Unity is constantly updating.
Documentation: This is your lifeline when you run into issues you don’t understand. Downloading the documentation frees you from reliance on the internet. Having it on hand is particularly helpful when traveling or dealing with unstable networks.
Standard Assets: These are additional objects that help you build games such as first-person and third-person character controllers, anti-aliasing and other useful items.
Note: iOS build support will only work on macOS. For Android build support, you’ll need to download Android Studio. The book covers more of this in detail.
In that case, you just run the installer again, uncheck everything and then check the required platforms. Follow the installer to completion to install those components.
Run the program once installation completes. The first thing you’ll see is a dialog asking for your Unity credentials.
If you don’t have an account, click create one and follow the steps. Unity accounts are free. You’ll have to log in every time you fire it up, but the engine does have an offline mode for those times when you have no network.
Once you’re logged in, you’ll be presented with a project list that provides an easy place to access all of your projects.
With Unity 2018, you now have a Learn tab. This tab provides a bunch of different Unity tutorials to get you up to speed with the editor.
Definitely check them out when you are done with this tutorial. To get started, click the New button.
You should see the project creation dialog. You’ll notice that you have a few options, so fill them in as follows:
Here’s what everything on this screen means:
The Project name represents the internal name of the game. It’s not published with your final game, so you can name your projects whatever you like. Give this one the name Bobblehead Wars.
The Location field is where you’ll save the project and related items. Click the three dots in the Location field to choose a location on your computer.
Unity 2018 comes with a new feature known as Templates. Unity used to only switch between 3D and 2D. It required the end user to turn on a bunch of settings to make simple games look good. Now, Unity provides different templates configured with the optimal settings. For instance, if you are developing a game for mobile devices, you would choose the Lightweight RP template. Templates don’t limit you in any way. They just save you time when configuring the editor and engine. For now, make sure 3D is selected.
The Add Asset Package button allows you to include additional assets in your game or any others you download from the Unity Asset Store. You don’t need to do anything with this for now.
Finally, you have the option to Enable Unity Analytics, which give you insight into your players’ experiences. By reading the data, you can determine areas wherein players struggle and make changes based on the feedback. This tutorial will not delve into analytics, so set the switch to off.
Once you’re ready, click the Create project button. Welcome to the world of Unity!
Learning the Interface
When your project loads, you’ll see a screen packed full of information. It’s perfectly normal to feel a little overwhelmed at first, but don’t worry — you’ll get comfortable with everything as you work through this tutorial.
Your layout will probably look like this:
If not, click the Layout button in the top-right and select 2 by 3 from the dropdown menu.
Each layout is composed of several different views. A view is simply a panel of information that you use to manipulate the engine. For instance, there’s a view made for placing objects in your world. There’s another view for you to play the game.
Here’s what the interface looks like when broken down into individual views:
Each red rectangle outlines a view that has its own purpose, interface and ways that you interact with it.
To see a list of all views, click the Window option on the menu bar.
The Unity user interface is completely customizable so you can add, remove and rearrange views as you see fit.
When working with Unity, you’ll typically want to rearrange views into a Layout that’s ideal for a given task. Unity allows you to save layouts for future use.
In the Editor, look for the Game tab (the view to the lower left) and right-click it. From the drop-down menu, select Add Tab then choose Profiler.
The Profiler view lets you analyze your game while it’s running. Unfortunately, the profiler is also blocking the Game view, so you won’t be able to play the game while you profile it — not so helpful.
Click and hold the Profiler tab and drag it to the Scene tab above.
As you see, views can be moved, docked and arranged. They can also exist outside the Editor as floating windows.
To save the layout, select Window\Layouts\Save Layout… and name it Debugging.
Whenever you need to access this particular layout, you can select the Layout button and choose Debugging.
When clicked, you’ll see a listing of all your views.
You can also delete layouts. If you ever accidentally trash a stock layout, you can restore the default layouts.
Organizing your Assets
Beginners to Unity might imagine that you develop your game from start to finish in Unity, including writing code, creating 3D models and textures, and so on.
In reality, a better way of thinking about Unity is as an integration tool. Typically, you will write code or create 3D models or textures in a separate program, and use Unity to wire everything together.
For Bobblehead Wars, we’ve created some 3D models for you, because learning how to model things in Blender would take an entire book on its own!
In this tutorial, you will learn how to import models into your game.
But before you do, it pays to be organized. In this game, you’re going to have a lot of assets, so it’s critical to organize them in way that makes them easy to find.
The view where you import and organize assets is called the Project Browser. It mimics the organization of your file system.
It previous versions of Unity, every Project Browser defaulted with nothing in it. With 2018, it now comes with a Scenes folder and a new scene called SampleScene. You can think of a scene as a level in your game. You can divide all your levels into individual scenes or you can keep everything in one scene. The choice is yours.
In the Project Browser, select the Assets folder and click the Create button. Select Folder from the drop-down menu and name it Models. This will be home to all your models. You may feel tempted to create folders and manipulate files in your file system instead of the Project Browser. That’s a bad idea — do not do that, Sam I Am!
Unity creates metadata for each asset. Creating, altering or deleting assets on the file system can break this metadata and your game.
Create the following folders: Animations, Materials, Prefabs, Presets, Scripts, and Textures.
Your Project Browser should look like this:
Personally, I find large folder icons to be distracting. If you also have a preference, you can increase or decrease the size by using the slider at the bottom of the Project Browser.
Note: All the screenshots in this tutorial from now on will show the smallest setting.
Finally, you may want to change the name of an asset. For instance, your current scene is called SampleScene. Select the Scenes folder, and then select SampleScene file. The name will become highlighted. Single click it one more time and you’ll be to write a new name. Change it to Main.
You can do this to any folder or asset in the Project Browser.
Importing Assets
Now that you’ve organized your folders, you’re ready to import the assets for the game. First, you’ll import the star of the show: the space marine.
Download the materials for this tutorial, open the resources folder and look for three files:
BobbleMarine-Head.fbx
BobbleMarine-Body.fbx
Bobble Wars Marine texture.psd
Drag these three files into the Models folder. Don’t copy BobbleWars.unitypackage; that comes later.
What is an FBX file? FBX files typically contain 3D models, but they can also include textures and animations. 3D programs, such as Maya and Blender, allow you to export your models for import into programs such as Unity using this file format.
Select the Models folder and you’ll see that you have a bunch of new files. Unity imported and configured the models for you.
To keep things tidy, move Bobble Wars Marine texture from the Models folder to the Textures folder. Textures are the basis of Materials.
What are materials, you ask? Materials provide your models with color and texture based upon lighting conditions. Materials use what are known as shaders that ultimately determine what appears on screen. Shaders are small programs written in a specific shader language which is far beyond the scope of this tutorial. You can learn more about materials through Unity’s included documentation.
Switch back to the Models folder and select BobbleMarine-Body. The Inspector view will now display information specific to that model, as well as a preview.
If you see no preview, then its window is closed. At the bottom of the Inspector, find a gray bar then drag it upwards with your mouse to expand the preview.
The Inspector allows you to make changes to the model’s configuration, and it allows changes to any selected object’s properties. Since objects can be vastly different from one another, the Inspector will change context based on the object selected.
Installing Blender
At this point, you’ve imported the models and texture for the space marine. The models were in FBX format, and the texture was in .PSD format.
We supplied the space marine models to you in the .FBX format, as this is a popular format for artists to deliver assets. But there’s another popular format you should understand how to use as well: Blender files.
Unlike .FBX, Blender files contain the source model data. This means you can actually edit these files inside Blender, and the changes will immediately take effect in Unity, unlike an .FBX file.
With an .FBX, you’d need to export and re-import the model into Unity every time you changed it.
There is a small tradeoff for all this delicious functionality. For Unity to work with Blender files, you need Blender installed on your computer. Blender is free, and you’ll be happy to know that you’ll use it to make your own models in the book.
Download and install Blender at the following URL: https://www.blender.org/download/
Note: Blender evolves at a rapid pace, so the version you see on your desktop will probably be different than this screenshot.
After you install Blender, run the app and then quit. That’s it — you can now use Blender files with Unity.
Importing Packages
Now that you’ve installed Blender, you can now import the rest of the assets.
The rest of the assets are combined into a single bundle called a Unity package. This is a common way that artists deliver assets for Unity, especially when they purchase them from the Unity store.
Let’s try importing a package. Select Assets\Import Package\Custom Package…, navigate to your resources folder and select BobbleheadWars.unitypackage, then click Open.
You’ll be presented with a list of assets included in that package, all of which are selected by default. Note that some of these are Blender files, but there are also other files like textures and sounds as well. Click the Import button to import them into Unity.
The import will add a bunch of additional assets to your project. If you get a warning, just dismiss it.
To keep things tidy, single-click the newly generated Materials folder (in the Models folder) and rename it to Models. Drag this new folder into the parent-level Materials folder.
Adding Models to the Scene View
At this point, you have imported everything into Unity. It’s time to start putting your game together, and you’ll kick it off by adding your models to the Scene view.
The Scene view is where game creation happens. It’s a 3D window wherein you’ll place, move, scale and rotate objects.
First, make sure to select the Scene view tab. Then, in the Project Browser, select BobbleArena from the Models subfolder and drag it into the Scene view.
Check out the arena in the Scene view:
Pretty cool, eh?
The Scene view gives you a way to navigate your game in 3D space:
Right-click and rotate your mouse to look around.
Hold down the right mouse button and use the WASD keys to actually move through the scene.
Moving too slow? Give it some juice by holding down the Shift key.
Scroll with your mouse wheel to zoom.
Press your mouse wheel and move your mouse to pan.
By default, the view displays everything with textures in a shaded mode. You can switch to other viewing modes such as wireframes or shaded wireframe.
Let’s try this out. Just underneath the Scene tab, click the Shaded dropdown and select Wireframe. Now you’ll see all your meshes without any textures, which is useful when you’re placing meshes by eye.
Switch the Scene view back to Shaded textures.
In the Scene view, you’ll notice a gizmo in the right-hand corner with the word Persp underneath it. This means the Scene view is in perspective mode; objects that are closer to you appear larger than those that are farther away.
Clicking on a colored axis will change your perspective of the scene. For example, click the green axis and the Scene view will look down from the y-axis. In this case, the Persp will read Top because you’re looking at the world from that perspective.
How’s it feel to be on top of the world? :]
Clicking the center box will switch the view into Isometric mode a.k.a., Orthographic mode. Essentially, objects are the same size regardless of their proximity to you.
To return to Perspective mode, simply click the center box again.
Adding the Hero
At this point, you have the arena set up, but it’s missing the guest of honor!
To fix this, in the Project Browser, find and open the Models folder then drag BobbleMarine-Body into the Hierarchy view.
In Unity, games are organized by scenes. For now, you can think of a scene as a level of your game. The Hierarchy view is a list of all objects that are currently present in the scene.
Note that your scene already contains several objects. At this point, it contains your arena, the space marine, and two default objects: The main camera and a directional light.
With the marine body still selected, hover the mouse over the Scene view and press the F key to zoom to the marine. This shortcut is useful when you have many objects in your scene and you need to quickly get to one of them.
Don’t worry if your space marine isn’t placed at this exact position. You’ll fix that later.
You’ll notice that when an object is selected, an outline appears around that object. Unity occasionally changes the outline color for selected objects from version to version.
In Unity 2018, new projects have a red outline. This is due to the new default color space of the editor. The color space determines how the engine mixes colors. It also determines what devices and platforms that your game can support. By default, the color space is set to Gamma but you can switch it to Linear for new PCs, mobile devices, and current consoles (PS4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch).
For now, it’s best to use the default color settings, but you can easily switch from red to orange. You can always change the color by selecting Edit\Preferences on Windows or Command-, on macOS. From the Preference window, select Colors and you’ll see a listing of all the colors that you can customize. To change the selection color, you need to alter the Selection Outline field.
The key point is that the selection color is cosmetic, not functional. Throughout this tutorial, we use an orange selection color.
While the space marine’s dismembered body is pretty intimidating, he’s going to have a hard time seeing and bobbling without a head!
Drag the BobbleMarine-Head from the Project Browser into the Hierarchy. Chances are, the head will not go exactly where you’d hope.
Select the head in the Hierarchy to see its navigation gizmos. By selecting and dragging the colored arrows, you can move the head in various directions.
The colored faces of the cube in the middle of the head allow you to move the object along two axes at the same time. For example, selecting and dragging the red face — the x-axis — allows you to move the head along the y- and z-axes.
You can use the toolbar to make other adjustments to an object.
The first item is the hand tool. This allows you to pan the Scene and is equivalent to holding down the middle mouse button.
Select the position tool to see the position gizmo that lets you reposition the selected object.
Use the rotate tool to rotate the selected object.
The scale tool allows you to increase and decrease the size of an object.
The rect tool lets you rotate, scale and reposition sprites. You’ll use this when working with the user interface and Unity 2D.
The transform tool, new to Unity 2018, combines the move, rotate, and scale tool into one swiss army knife. This tool is your one stop shop for providing all your object transformations.
Using the aforementioned tools, tweak the position of the helmet so that it sits on the hero’s neck. Also, see if you can move the space marine so he’s centered in the arena. In the next tutorial in this series, you’ll position these precisely with the Inspector. When done, the marine should look like this:
After positioning the space marine’s head, select File\Save Scene as…. Unity will present you with a save dialog. Name the scene Main, and after you finish creating it drag the file to the Scenes folder.
Note: Unity does not autosave and unfortunately can be a little bit “crashy” at times. Make sure to save early and often. Otherwise, you will lose work (and possibly your sanity).
Where to Go From Here?
Congratulations! You now have a space marine at the ready to kill all the alien monsters, and you’ve learned a lot about the Unity user interface and importing assets along the way.
Specifically, in this tutorial you’ve learned:
How to configure the Unity layout, including customizing it for specific tasks.
How to import assets and organize them within Unity.
How to add assets to a scene and position them manually.
In the upcoming second tutorial of this series, the aliens will finally catch up with the space marine — and you’ll learn about GameObjects and Prefabs along the way!
If you’re enjoying this tutorial series and want to learn more, you should definitely check out Unity Games by Tutorials.
The book teaches you everything you need to know about building games in Unity, whether you’re a beginner or a more experienced game developer. In the book, you’ll build four great games:
A 3D twin-stick shooter
A classic 2D platformer
A 3D tower-defense game (with virtual reality mode!)
A first-person shooter

Most everyone has encountered or purchased some form of a Consumer oriented Internet of Things device. Smart Thermostats, Light Switches and Light Bulbs are common and relatively inexpensive. On the grand scheme of things all of the small'ish devices and the energy, time and effort they save add up to significant savings.
The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is here (Hint: It’s been here for a while)
Why Should People Care about IIoT? (click2tweet)
People should care about IIoT for a few reasons. Not the least of which are:
Jobs – Big Companies are betting on the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
Better Living Thru Computing
Market Size - $3.7B in 2020 with a 32.6% CAGR and $60T by 2035 (via Forbes)
Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is expected to top $60 trillion during the next 15 years.
Think Sensors
There are sensors in everything and the number of sensors if growing exponentially. Forbes
2015 – 15 Billion
2020 – 31 Billion
2025 – 75 Billion
This is a good thing. More sensors might seem invasive (and they might be), but they also mean more data, more processing and Better Living Thru Computing (point #2 above). If the implication is that sensors know too much about us … there is a business opportunity here for big platform players and the partners that support them.
There is a virtuous cycle here:
Sensors –> Capturing Data (aka Big Data) –> Processing Data –>
Analyzing –> Taking Action –> Repeat –>
Every industry will be impacted … Beyond the obvious areas like Supply Chains and Logistics. Which are fundamental elements of every business.
One thing IIOT enables and allows is for a more meticulous following of the Lean Startup methodology that is based upon the “build-measure-learn” feedback loop. But, that’s the topic of another post. Read on for more about IIoT.
But, on a much larger scale there are significant economies of scale to receive the benefits of The Industrial Internet of Things. Big players are jumping into the IIOT space. They are doing this for a lot of reasons, but the usual driver is ever present … money.
Corporations are willing to spend to reduce costs and increase efficiencies. Which means the investments made today will pay dividends for years to come.
What does this has to do with consumers?
Why should people listening to this Breakthrough Byte care? The main reason is because, like racecars, the innovations developed in the IIOT space will trickle down to the Consumer IOT space.
Perhaps more important … these are the jobs people will be taking in the coming 5, 10 and 20 years. This Breakthrough Byte is focused on helping people understand a bit more about The Industrial Internet of Things and how they can make sure they position themselves to make the most of the IIOT.
Listen to the show on BBSRadio – My segment starts at about the 40 minute mark. But, listen to the whole show for the full effect.
Bullet Points
The Industrial Internet of Things is already shaping the way you work and will continue to be a hot area for job growth, innovation, and globalization.
Every aspect of manufacturing is being impacted by IIOT - from the design (CAD/CAM) to the manufacturing to the shipping and even the disassembly of products is being automated and optimized.
IIOT is, at its core, about the decoupling of devices from applications.
IIOT is about connecting THINGS to infrastructure (instead of to applications)
IIOT is about Intelligent Devices that help people as services become better, faster and with higher quality
As with every Breakthrough Byte segment I break it down into Pros, Cons and ROI. You may disagree with these points and if you do please drop a comment here so we can start a discussion.
Cons
More Security is needed and is being worked out (e.g. Your vehicle may push a lot of content and it has the potential to be intercepted and/or compromised. This is true with healthcare, buildings, mobile devices, IoT devices, etc.)
Data Effluent / Data Exhaust are being tracked more effectively. More work is required (hint: Opportunity)
Standards need to be approved and adopted (e.g. Blockchain)
Pros
Pervasive – Sensors are everywhere and expanding
Proven – It’s not in question WHETHER they work. It’s just WHERE they should be put to work that needs help and provides and opportunity across multiple levels on a global scale
Protected’ish (hint: this is a huge area of opportunity)
ROI
Safety – From the human aspect the 3D’s can be considered – Dirty, Dull, and Dangerous Tasks (HT Michio Kaku)
Reduced Time to Decisions / Better Decisions (Yes, Machines WILL be making decisions for you)
Real-Time – Continuous improvement with real-time feedback
Thanks for reading. If you want to continue the conversation … let’s go!

The Incredibly Versatile Uses of Computers
