Okay I'm not like a media analyst or anything but I wanna talk about how genius the horror in genloss is cause my brain has been churning about this since the finale.
Okay so first off the obvious, the degradation of the series as it goes on, going from almost strictly comedy in the first episode to almost strictly horror in the third. Giving you security within goofy antics and stupid bits only to tear it away from you in the second episode and leave you with implications that twist and turn the first episode from goofy to borderline terrifying when you think about the fact that it's all been under a filter.
In my opinion the second episode is the creepiest, it at least is the one that had the biggest impact on me when I was watching it(though episode three also did a number on me). And I think the reason is because episode two is that middle ground between horror and comedy that's just uncomfortable enough to leave you unsettled throughout the whole thing. Watching Charlie get torn open but be safe in the fact that he's just filled with slime as he makes jokes only to suddenly have the comedy ripped away from you when the slime turns to blood and Charlie starts screaming bloody murder only for it to go right back into comedy again. It's just so uncomfortable. For the entire rest of the stream I was just unsettled and uneasy because it's all just wrong now. I could barely enjoy the comedy because I was just mortified at the idea that Charlie was just bleeding out on the table, my imagination did all the work for it.
And then Sneeg. Holy shit Sneeg.
The scene where Sneeg puts the hat back on and presumably "wakes up" hit me like a ton of bricks. The way his eyes dart around the room in horror and shock. And we have no idea what he's seeing, but obviously something is scaring him, more than just remembering previous events, something is freaking him out. Maybe it's Charlie with his guts out on the gurney, maybe it's Frank who's actually straight up just a dead body. Maybe it's something else entirely we don't know for sure.
And that's where I think the genius of the horror comes in because it's so open ended, it's so up to interpretation because Showfall is in control of everything, all the time. Even at the end when we think we're making a giant, impactful decision, deciding Ranboo's fate, their mask is still flashing, Showfall could still be in partial control of them. Him begging to die could have been Showfall this whole time. Our decisions never mattered and Showfall is always in control of everything. This leaves so many things up to interpretation because we have absolutely no idea what is real and what's fake. So the veiwers imaginations can fill in the gaps, like what happened to me while I was watching the second episode.
That's what's scary, that not only are the people forced to participate in Showfall's shows having their free will taken away, but so are the veiwers because our choices never mattered.
