Honestly, one of the scariest things to realize is that no one has a true solid, unchanging, unflinching part of themselves, personality wise.

You can change anything about yourself. You can learn to talk different, behave differently, like different things, be different things. You can reshape yourself into whatever best version of yourself you want to be.

It takes time and effort, of course, and like OP said it takes acting and sometimes a certain level of delusion. But you can do it.

Which makes the question "who are you?" really daunting sometimes. Who are you? Anyone. What do you want? Anything. That's a long list of things to pick and choose from!!

This mini-rant doesn't include neurological disorders of course, like depression- but it includes a hell of a lot more than you'd expect

Star wars’ lore is MASSIVE... As a result, I try to learn more about it through bits and pieces, I choose what I feel like will work best for my interpretations then fill in the gaps however I feel like. Pokemon's lore is very chill, easy to digest and fun to play around with! Even if there isn't much for many characters, but I still try to stick with the timeline of events that most fans agrees with. Saint Seiya's lore is what I'm currently learning more about! So far, it's kinda of chill like Pokemon's but it is fun to think of, like it is with SW's.

I have a huge preference for plotted stuff. Knowing the course of events and my partner’s muse makes things a lot easier for me, and overall it is a lot more enjoyable to me.

It depends on the kind of thread & the size of it TBH. Usually speaking, I'm fast to get to RP responses, but I rely on my queue to deliver them. It helps me to space out RP responses, and manage the numbers of RP threads I have going. I can't stress enough how this method helps me SO MUCH, to prevent any form of burnouts. It may seem like I tend to respond faster to Discord rps, simply because the threads there tend to be shorter in size. But it is mainly due to the fact, there isn’t a queue system.

I have no triggers! But I would like that my mutuals tagged anything related to current world events/politics. I get how heated these subjects are to many people. However, I’m not an American, when I’m on my RP blogs I don’t want to see those things. Trust me, if I wanted to know more about it, I'd search for reputable sources of information. And not random blogs, that could be spreading misinformation or fear mongering, uninformed people. No one benefits from these types of situations. I've been in the RPC for many years, and this shit shouldn't be seen an acceptable way to behave online. " EFFECTS OF COVID-19 TO OUR COUNTRY, ITS ECONOMY, AND ITS PEOPLE"

An epidemic of an unknown disease was reported in a cluster of instances in December of 2019. The outbreak was ultimately discovered to be caused by a new coronavirus strain known as COVID-19, which had never been seen in humans before.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a social and economic catastrophe as well as a health problem, and its severe and far-reaching consequences are being felt all over the world. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a significant loss of human life all around the world, and it poses an unprecedented threat to public health, food systems, and the workplace. The pandemic has wreaked havoc on the economy and society, putting millions of people at risk of descending into extreme poverty. Hundreds of millions of businesses are in jeopardy. Almost half of the worldwide workforce is on the verge of losing their jobs. The bulk of informal economy workers lack social protection and access to decent health care, and they have lost access to productive assets. The social and economic repercussions of the epidemic are numerous and varied, ranging from school closures to destroyed industries and millions of lost jobs.

We've learnt a lot from this pandemic, including the importance of valuing one's life, because many individuals, young and old, are dying due of COVID-19. During this pandemic, we also learn how to prioritize our relationships with family and friends. In the meantime, we're stuck with it, and I'm sure some families are on the verge of breaking down. Nevertheless, I believe we should pause for a moment to appreciate what we have been given: a chance to reconnect and understand each other. Time to improve our relationships, let go of past issues and forgive each other; create new memories; and be creative with how we spend our time together. And in this new normal way of living due to COVID-19, we've learned to stay on top of what's going on around us so we know what to do and what not to do.

The daily rise of COVID-19 cases and deaths has prompted a nationwide lockdown, quarantine, and some limitations. As a result, only a limited number of people can go out, and children between the ages of 1-17 years old and senior citizens are not allowed to go out. Also during this pandemic season,many rules and protocols must be followed to keep us safe from the disease caused by COVID-19. Wearing a face mask and face shield while leaving the house, adhering to a 1-meter social distance guideline to prevent the spread of any disease, always carrying alcohol or hand sanitizer to keep our hands clean, and much more are all part of these regulations and protocols. To protect our own and our family's safety, we must strictly adhere to all of these regulations and protocols. But if you notice that you have COVID-19 symptoms, seek medical help right away, because it is better to be sure and safe than to be sorry.

For all the people who are suffering right now, don't lose your hope because the time will come that we can all get through this pandemic. Let us strengthen our faith in God because He will never leave us behind.

Where Law and Chaos Came From: a D&D History Lesson

I’ve seen a few interesting posts about Dungeons and Dragons alignments that all share two interesting commonalities:

1) They think the two-axis system of Law vs Chaos and Good vs Evil is too restrictive for people who like to roleplay. 2) They try to redeem the two-axis system by redefining Law and Chaos in ways that make sense to them personally.

Good and Evil aren’t usually a topic of debate on these posts - it’s easy enough to play a character as generally doing the right thing or as being a total bastard. Discussion on acts of more debatable morality (e.g. torturing a villain for vital information, killing an innocent person by accident, sacrificing one for the good of all) tends to veer towards whether the action itself qualifies as good or evil, and not whether good and evil themselves need to be redefined. Conversely, I’ve seen Law and Chaos rewritten as Community vs Individuality, Tradition vs Cultural Mutability, Authority vs Anarchy - all interesting ideas that tend to reflect more on the person writing them than the actual purpose of the Law vs Chaos axis.

I’m not saying these people are wrong, but that these players (as well as the fine folks who wrote the 5e Handbooks) are placing too much significance on the purpose or intention of Law vs Chaos. The historical secret is that Law vs Chaos alignment never had any deep meaning behind it - or, at least, it never had any meaning deeper than the Pittsburgh Penguins versus the Vancouver Canucks.

I’ll explain how, but it requires a bit of a history lesson. The idea of Lawful and Chaotic alignments - as well as a number of other cornerstones of Dungeons and Dragons - came from a different game: a miniature wargame called Chainmail. It’s time for a deep dive.

In 1970, before he helped create Dungeons and Dragons, Gary Gygax developed a ruleset for modeling Medieval-Era battles using miniatures. Miniatures were organized into opposing armies, and the modeled battles were long, drawn-out math sessions, preoccupied with calculating distances, damages, casualties and morale. If you’ve ever played or seen Warhammer 40k, it’s a lot like that, except with English Longbowmen instead of Space Marines.

The purpose of Chainmail was to recreate historical battles, and so the gameplay mechanics were painfully precise, with rules for weather, terrain, and siege weapons. Only at the tail end of the Chainmail rulebook, in a tiny ten-page appendix, did Gygax include the rules that would become the basis for all of Dungeons and Dragons. This was the Chainmail Fantasy Supplement.

Even in the Fantasy Supplement, the purpose was still to recreate battles. The second edition of Chainmail - the oldest version I could find, from 1971 - instructs players on how to “refight the epic struggles related by J.R.R. Tolkein...and other fantasy writers”, only suggesting that the player could “create [their] own world” as an afterthought. Chainmail’s fantasy supplement was made so LOTR nerds could re-create the battles of Helm’s Deep or Pelennor Fields, down to the walking trees and boulder-throwing trolls.

Still, a couple of fun details are kicking around in those ten pages. Even back then, fireball and lightning bolt spells were the main tools in the wizards’ arsenals. Dragons and other powerful fantasy creatures could only be hit with magic weapons - an immunity that lingers on some powerful D&D monsters to this day. Even the colour varieties of dragons were introduced here, and they’ve remained largely unchanged for nearly half a century now:

“White Dragons live in cold climates and breathe frost. Black Dragons are tropical and spit caustic acid. The Blue variety discharges a bolt of electricity. Green Dragons waft poisonous vapours--chlorine--at their opponents”

Classic! (I did omit the mottled purple dragon with the poisonous stinger, but those stuck around too - they’re just called wyverns now). 

At the very end of the fantasy supplement, you can find the following list:

I’m not sure why Gygax thought it was “impossible to draw a distinct line between “good” and “evil” here - honestly, this looks like a pretty straightforward good-neutral-evil list to me, but there you are. So Goblins, Orcs, Balrogs and Dragons are CHAOS, and Hobbits (who became Halflings later once copyright started getting huffy), Heroes, Ents and Magic Weapons (?) are LAW. Wizards can be either LAW or CHAOS; Elves are neutral (but kinda lawful sometimes); and apparently there are Super Heroes in the Lawful camp (Gygax describes them earlier as “like Conan”.)

The purpose of dividing these units into Law or Chaos is not to dictate how they are played, but what team they will play for in the conflict. That’s why I made my hockey analogy earlier: all Law and Chaos defined back then was what team you played for. So, by these rules, if you were building a Lawful Army and your buddy built a Chaos Army, you would both be able to add wizards to your team, but your buddy would have exclusive rights to dragons. You’d be able to add magic weapons, but your buddy couldn’t. Moreover, if you decided to hold a fight in a forest full of pixies and werewolves, you would actually roll off to determine which side those Neutral creatures would join. 

If Law and Chaos did have any deeper meaning in this context, it sometimes dictated how the units behaved. Units of orcs would attack other units of orcs if they failed an obedience check; dragons, being “evil and egotistical”, always had to attack the biggest, most badass targets first. With rules like that, commanding those armies would be more ‘chaotic’, while the lawful side could generally be trusted to obey the commands of the player.

So at worst, the Chainmail law vs chaos axis is a purely logistical division that dictates which units get to join which teams; at its most #deep, it characterizes the combat behaviour of some military units. I think this is probably also the source of D&D racism, e.g. “all orcs are chaotic evil”. That’s a rule that makes much more sense when you’re trying to divvy up the teams in an extremely complex wargame, because you’re looking at orcs en masse, and you’re not too interested in the personalities of individual units.

So, the alignment system does make some sense in Chainmail, where it originated. Here’s where I show you exactly how much influence Chainmail had on D&D and how it struggled to transfer this concept of alignment in a meaningful way.

The “first edition” of D&D - at least the one most of us would recognize as D&D - is officially called Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. That’s the 1977 version in which players create an adventuring party. (It’s called “Advanced” because a “Basic” edition was also released, strictly for levels 1-3). There was actually one other, earlier edition of D&D, which was released in 1974. It was intended to be another Chainmail expansion, so much so that you needed the Chainmail rulebook to play it!

I’m going to ignore that edition, though, since 1) it’s pretty hard to find the rulebook,  2) AD&D was where the game found its own identity anyway and 3) The AD&D handbook is hilariously bizarre, especially when dealing with player morality.

You might know of some of the weirdness of AD&D alignments already. For example, certain classes had to be certain alignments. Paladins were always lawful good; druids were always true neutral. Assassins were automatically evil, and thieves could not be good. Weirdly enough, all monks were lawful - I guess because they adhered to the traditions of their vaguely-east-asian dojos. (By the way, this means that everybody’s favourite Feather Leather Fashionista, Vax’ildan the dual-classed Rogue/Paladin, is a mechanical impossibility in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.)

It’s easy to see how this move was just an ungainly step forward from Chainmail. Again, this is Gygax telling you what teams your characters must play for - what armies they would join if this were a Chainmail game - without recognizing that the need for an alignment system has basically vanished. We're not picking our fantasy kickball teams anymore; everyone is on the same team, adventuring together, and all an alignment system becomes in that context is a hindrance.

And oh was alignment ever a hindrance in AD&D. Each alignment was a moral code of sorts, but it was also a language. Chaotic Neutral characters shared a language that only Chaotic Neutral characters could understand. Assassins could learn to speak other alignment-languages as they leveled up (or Druidic, if they wanted to be nerds I guess), but if you changed alignment in any way you would lose access to your previous alignment language. This makes absolutely zero sense. Worse still, if you committed an act that didn’t fit with your alignment, it would screw you over mechanically. If a paladin ever willingly committed an evil act they straight-up lost their healing powers and become regular fighters FOREVER. Even if they did something a little bit chaotic, they lost their powers until they could pray the cray away with the help of a lawful good cleric. The book even vaguely suggests that alignment shifting in other classes be met with “great penance”. You’re not allowed to be an assassin again until you do enough poison murders! We’re taking your poison away!

The book describes each individual alignment, but not with any subtlety. This is long before the game itself grasped that the most fun part of tabletop roleplay is the roleplaying, and alignment rules still seem to recall the behaviour of army units rather than the behaviour of individuals. Chaos - as is usually the case - is the alignment that suffers most. The Chaotic Good description gets a nice Robin Hood-y bent, the Chaotic Evil one is the “carnage is good” mantra you’d expect - but here’s Chaotic Neutral:

“Above respect for life and good, or disregard for life and the promotion of evil, the chaotic neutral places randomness and disorder. Good and evil are complimentary balance arms. Neither are preferred, nor must either prevail, for ultimate chaos would then suffer.”

Leaving aside the misuse of the word “complimentary” (you’re looking for complementary, Gygax) and the poorly-structured first sentence - yeah, that’s what the big secret of Chaos is, apparently. It’s not rebellion or individuality (which get championed in the Chaotic Good description), it’s pure, unadulterated, dice-rolling randomness. “Fuck it” made manifest. Don’t think about it too hard, because it doesn’t make any sense, and it will take you down a (fittingly) chaotic wormhole of self-contradiction. 

Lawful Neutral and True Neutral are weird, too. Both are described as pursuing the absolute harmony of the word, but like...you know, in different ways. There’s also a bizarre association between goodness and beauty. “Life and beauty are of great importance”, says the Lawful Good blurb. Does this mean that Delilah Briarwood, Wildemount’s hottest necromancer, is Lawful Good after all? shucks.

It’s pretty clear that AD&D is the awkward gangly phase between wargaming and genuine tabletop roleplay, with lots of weird vestigial features and obnoxiously pedantic mechanics that would later be dropped. For some reason, despite the fact that it never made sense to begin with, alignment wasn’t one of those mechanics - or at least it tended to vanish as a mechanic and then come back again in later editions, slightly different but never fixed. This led to another awkward gangly phase at the turn of the millennium, when D&D rules were adapted into games like Baldur’s Gate or Planescape Torment. Alignment creates fallacies and failures everywhere in those games. If you play Evil in Baldur’s Gate, the game can become basically unwinnable, as NPCs begin to attack you on sight. The way to bond with the Chaotic Neutrals in Planescape Torment is to literally spout gibbering nonsense at a man on the street until he barks at you. Even on Critical Role, with its 5e gameplay and extremely talented dungeon master, alignment feels like an arbitrary interloper rather than an important part of the game. Percy stays Good even after torturing a teenager, but Vex goes Neutral for stealing a broom. Nobody in their right mind would believe Fjord is Lawful Good because of his deception and warlockery, but he technically hasn’t violated the LG handbook so far. 

So because of these repeated failures to use alignment in a compelling way, I see a lot of people hunting for the right way to do alignments, the right way to understand chaos, law, neutrality and the like. They want alignments to fit. But they never did fit. The truth?

Two-axis alignment is stupid, and it always has been.

Honestly, I don’t see the benefit in remedying two-axis alignment as a system. I have my own re-interpretation of chaos that I like fairly well, and I’ve seen a few compelling ones, but I also think that alignment could use a complete makeover. There are some fun examples of morality systems that I’m sure DMs could experiment with, if they so wished. 

You could steal from Ultima IV, for example. The Ultima series was a product of the early days of the computer/tabletop romance - and by early I mean 1980s early. Ultima IV does not use the alignment system: instead, it lets the player ‘train’ in eight virtues to achieve ultimate avatar awesomeness. The virtues are Honesty, Compassion, Valor, Justice, Honor, Sacrifice, Spirituality, and Humility, further divided into the camps of Truth, Love, and Courage. Maybe angels of each of those virtues have corresponding devils (Deception! Cruelty! Cowardice! Injustice! Dishonor! Greed! Blasphemy! Pride!). That could be one way to play with morality without worrying about chaos or law.

I’m also a fan of Pillars of Eternity’s spectra of dispositions, which fit loosely into pairs (not necessarily good or evil pairs, mind you). Benevolent or Cruel, Stoic or Passionate, Honest or Deceptive, Clever or Rational, Diplomatic or Aggressive. Heck, those remind me of the personality sliders in the Sims. What were those again, like - Grumpy/Nice, Playful/Serious, etc?

Those trying to give alignments the benefit of the doubt often suggest that alignments were created to help people roleplay. That’s not...entirely untrue, it’s just misleading. They were created to help people make gameplay decisions, but they were pulled from a different kind of game altogether. It’s like trying to play checkers with chess pieces, and it always has been. The D&D alignment system doesn’t work for D&D because it wasn’t designed for it - it was designed for wargaming. We probably should have just chucked the whole thing instead of enshrining it in nerd culture, but it’s too late for that. Still, our creative energy now would be better spent on a new morality system that actually gives us a thing or two to think about.

How ineffective “creative” pedagogy can lead to self doubt

My first Creative Technologies (CT) experience occurred before I even enrolled. I had a lot hinged on this course. My options were to drop everything and move up from Dunedin, or to continue rolling pizza dough full time. However, my arms were getting tired.

Open day seemed necessary. I had to be certain moving to Auckland would be worth it, and CT was not a traditional course. Trying to explain it to family and friends only made me realise how little I understood. The vague CT presentation didn’t silence my screaming doubts and burning questions, instead left me feeling inadequate and anxious. My confidence sunk even further when a list of CT traits was displayed. Contrastingly, my parents felt reassured as they believed that I fitted this archetype. Given the nature of CT, it makes sense that the presentation was ambiguous. To be otherwise would contradict the essence of creativity and CT. My feelings after the presentation were perpetuated by the single insistent thought of “I’m not creative”.

New Zealand filmmaker and artist Taika Waititi defines creativity as “having fun, looking at life through the lens of a child” (Ted X Talks, 2010). Prior to CT I felt as though creativity was binary, you either had it or not. When I thought of creative people, I thought of my free spirited, accomplished artistic friends. I had constructed a stereotype that creative people looked a certain way and produced unique creations, ignoring that creativity is a way of thinking without restriction, and child-like curious exploration. So why was it I felt this way? What influences have made me feel uncreative?

Personally, I believe it was a traditional education system that didn’t foster curiosity and student directed self-discovery. Harris (2016) affirms that learning and teaching practices are responsible for fuelling creativity and the networks that support it (as cited in De Bruin & Harris, 2017). My primary school experience consisted mainly of a transmissional approach to teaching which I found disengaging. For example, we were still being read to in Year 5, while we were capable of exploring our own interests and literary worlds. This is particularly dangerous considering the important formative stages of Year 5. Disinterest for reading may arise if the chosen text doesn’t resonate with them and agency over their reading is not fostered. How can primary school facilitate creativity while still adhering to National Standards? I believe that all primary teachers should encourage curiosity by treating every question, suggestion, answer and comment as valuable. When posed with outlandish questions, “I’m not sure, good thinking” should be replaced with “I’m not sure, let's find out”. Students feel valued when the teacher is humble and willing to learn alongside them, while autocracy is detrimental to a child's creativity (Lin, 2011).

The church was another major authoritative influence in my childhood. An unattributed proverb states, “the fish will be the last to discover water”, meaning when constantly immersed in something, they will know no difference. Church, for me, was a place full of doubt. Ultimate biblical statements were indoctrinated through light-hearted innocent media such as the animated talking Tomato called Bob. The lack of research suggests that we ignore the danger in teaching such existential topics to children in such a mollified way. However, Ennew (2006) says “spiritual-abuse” can subtly occur when adults “devalue children’s appreciation of awe, wonder, and imagination; making faith strictly cerebral” (as cited in Segura-April, 2016). This reflects my feelings as a child at church. There was little room to be curious as the sacred Bible had all the definite answers. How and when certain topics are introduced need to be examined, to avoid raising generations of doubtful children. I believe that when dealing with significant topics such as creation, afterlife and punishment of sins, children should be intellectually capable of having critical discussion. Adults must be willing to converse with curious doubtful children, and share the historical context that the Bible was written in and the inherent “Mystery of Faith”. Being definitive about such topics leads to indoctrination, which consequently extinguishes creativity.

As I developed a more critical mindset, school and church became less daunting. I met certain teachers who had the humility to foster my curiosity - most notably an old, strict chemistry teacher from New York. This teacher, as old-school and blunt as he was, would answer every question with equal attention. On the occasions where the answers were uncertain or non-existent, he would make the effort to research and learn about the topic alongside students. Not only did this facilitate students curiosity, but it also humanised the teacher. He effectively enabled his students and allowed us to learn from each other, authority was exercised in a manner of mutual respect, and humility. This was effective teaching because my teacher sort wisdom from his students and was aware of his own uncertainties. Students are enabled in classroom environments where questions are encouraged, they will have freedom to explore and deepening their understanding of the curriculum.  However, it is important for teachers not to view thoughtful questions, challenging or clarifications personally (Waks, 2018). If we continue to measure the performance of schools and teachers on pass rates, then teachers will solely focus on the curriculum. This creates a culture where all learning must be “by the book”. A teacher saying “don’t worry, it’s not in the exam” exemplifies the pressures put on teachers by senior management to produce strong pass rates. High school teaches us so much about so little; only the teachers and students who see through the artificial curriculum will learn anything. High school and primary school are regulated by NCEA and National Standards respectively, which incentivises teachers to only teach what is required, leading to avoidance of divergent topics and treating areas of interest as nonsense. This diminishes creativity in both teachers and students.

CT is an industry focused environment where diversity is celebrated through different disciplines, thinking and people. I felt petrified at open day because of how foreign CT was. It is a student-directed, passionate and democratic pedagogy I had encountered only few times throughout my education. The freedom of CT became apparent at the presentation. It both excited and scared me. My preconceived idea of University consisted of lecture halls, academic journals and competitiveness, however CT is an open studio, conversation and collaboration. Learning in a studio compared to a lecture hall is evident of the pedagogy present. Shulman (2005) compares the different “nurseries” of learning. He states that we can learn about professions through studying their places of training and development. Notably, a lecture theatre has a lecturer behind a desk at the front, while a studio has groups of students working around tables with an instructor circulating among them. They are representative of autocratic and democratic atmospheres. Both have a figurehead but one talks while the other talks then observes/listens. Through a democratic approach to teaching CT, in a studio format with a focus on experimentation and collaboration, learning is organic. We are given the freedom to discover with and from each other, as teachers and students. The culture of CT supports students through teachers who recognise the fluidity of creativity. Students are encouraged to be resourceful, adaptable and diverse in thinking and skills. After two months in CT, I feel comfortable with the freedom and learning processes. Making frequent mistakes is seen as a valuable lesson rather than failure, this spurs me on to try and try again, a valuable and natural way to learn.

Open day was a glimpse into a teaching method that confused me. I was challenged on how I perceived university and creativity. The subsequent feeling of inadequacy was built on outdated pedagogy which didn’t allow for collaborative exchanges or self-discovery. Famous creatives are often viewed as outcasts and rebels, perhaps because societal pressures and education systems are too rigid and funnel people towards certain outcomes rather than supporting their own curiosity and interests.  Several contributing factors are responsible for this channeling - the stereotype of creativity only being practiced in fine artists, indoctrinating establishments such as the Church and the inflexible education system which limits our educators. “I’m not creative” is a self-fulfilling-prophecy (von Oech, 1973). As the poster in my father’s classroom room states, “if you think you can, or you think you can’t, you are right”.

The Potion

(Artemis Enteri, Jarlaxle, random background drow)(tw suggestion of Dubcon, suggestion of noncon, Sexism, Drugs, Alcohol, Imprisonment, Attempted Drugging, drow being drow, Emotional Manipulation, Frustration, Jarlaxle being Jarlaxle, artistic theft)        

"If I'm not back in three hours come and get me." Jarlaxle had been extremely specific. "Come get me and come alone. Don't be seen. Don't get caught."

Easier said than done when this whole damn city was constantly crawling with drow. The underdark didn’t adhere to a classic day and night cycle, nor did their activities and movements have any semblance of rhythm. With their ability to rest themselves completely in four hours, the city seemed to him entirely chaotic and ever busy. The only predictable pattern was that the streets emptied in front of priestesses and that the men moved in noisy mobs.

Worse yet, he had found a flaw in himself. He was used to having free range of the rooftops in human cities. But here the drow seemed determined to build right up into the cavernous ceiling. Even where he could find a flat surface he now had to compete for space with couriers, running gang battles, jumping spiders and various other assassins and spies. His ability to predict and evade them was…lacking.

There was little he loathed quite as much as discovering he lacked in ability. In anything.

It was fortunate that he had accepted Jarlaxle’s lend of an invisibility cloak. Not that he needed one, strictly speaking, to vanish and avoid detection. An assassin that drew notice didn’t tend to be a successful one. But he had to admit that it accelerated his journey, for he was a rarity down here in being a human that wasn’t a broken down husk. It tended to attract the wrong kind of attention.

Although with drow, every kind was the wrong kind.

There, the house. A lesser family of drow nobles from what Jarlaxle said, with only twenty members of the household. The matron was an extremely minor priestess and they were mostly known for their artwork, woven spidersilk tapestries of such beauty and delicacy that they decorated almost every upper house and temple. Jarlaxle claimed that the secondary consort Mizzan was the one who really kept it all together, who created the artwork that the house matron then claimed as her own.

“He is very skilled I think. He had forged documents so that their bloodline makes sense and cuts out the heretics. Here and here, you see the smudges?”

Frankly he didn’t think the tapestries were terribly impressive at all, tending as they did to relate to religious iconography and so depicting large spiders and the destruction of human settlements. And they were dull to his eye, devoid of colour in much the same way as their buildings and clothing. He had instead looked at Jarlaxle and wondered how much of his jewel-bright wardrobe was a political statement and how much was personal preference.

Jarlaxle was skilled to survive down here while flaunting his defiance so openly. Competent enough that Artemis wanted to observe him and learn his secrets.

Why had he been so insistent that Artemis come out and find him? Jarlaxle was surely well able to maneuver around the city on his own and had any number of surprisingly devoted followers. He half expected a trap, that the drow meant to kill someone and then have Artemis appear as a human scapegoat. As if people hadn’t tried such tricks on him before.

He waited for the street to clear before moving across, careful to avoid puddles least a stray splash or ripple alert any watching eyes. Drow were much harder to evade than the average guard, being primed from a young age to spy danger and listen for knives in the dark. They were a challenge to sneak past, even for him, and for all the grim danger down here he couldn’t deny it was satisfying to succeed.

And for all his frustration this escapade gave him the chance to rummage around through Jarlaxle’s inventory and he had done so with great interest. This little black piece of silky fabric, he said, would turn into a hole when thrown against a solid surface, allowing the bearer to walk through.

A little part of him was irked. He had had to learn how to climb walls and infiltrate heavily guarded fortresses by sheer skill alone, whereas Jarlaxle got to cheat because of money and thievery and sweet-walking his way into all kinds of treasures. But then, wasn’t that a skill in and of itself? A skill he had never quite gotten to grips with, given his rather acerbic approach to networking and social affairs. Artemis hated to think he lacked in anything, but never had he had it so sharply thrown into relief.  

Those thoughts left him as he slipped into the room. His skin prickled. The air was thick with the aftermath of violence. He mapped it swiftly, ready to throw himself back outside. Underdark dwellings were always dark to a human eye, but he could see enough to tell him a story. An overturned table, a bottle of wine spilled, the wreckage of three glasses. Throwing knives wedged into furniture. Scorch marks that matched those of a fireball.

The room must be soundproofed, for no one to come investigate. Surely even more rambunctious business negotiations didn’t involve fireballs.

"Abbil? Is that you?"

He released a breath he hadn’t realized he had been holding and eased towards the side room, mindful of trickery.

"What happened?”

Jarlaxle sat upright against the far wall, pouring himself a glass of wine. Blood glinted on the stone above him. He had been thrown and not moved from there since.

"Your timing is impeccable as always." Jarlaxle toasted him from the floor. “I would offer you some, but it’s laced with a rather nasty compliance potion.”

This was a bedroom. His stomach clenched so violently that for a moment he felt ill. Jarlaxle was fast and clever and laden down with magical trinkets, and often used sex and pleasure as part of his negotiations. And yet, down here the unbalance of the surface world was reversed.

But there lay a corpse. Her neck had been broken. Artemis was briefly impressed, for she was a good thirty pounds heavier than Jarlaxle and half a head taller. The male drow on the bed was a different matter. He looked as if he were sleeping. And now that he looked closer, he was, chest rising and falling slowly.

“We wined, we dined, she thought she was the first person to have the bright idea to drug me and forgot that such a thing doesn’t actually stop me from attacking someone, unless they order it.” He made a derisive noise. “Amateur.”

Artemis swallowed back a reflexive clench in his stomach. Such concoctions were alarmingly common down here and repulsed him on a more visceral level than knives and toxins. He could fight off someone with a blade, he could cure himself of poison, he could resist torture. The thought of someone stripping his willpower away was-

"Are you hurt?" He spoke mostly to distract himself.

"I have a dislocated shoulder." Jarlaxle sounded surprisingly smug and he was giving up a lot of information very freely. "She wasn't pleased when she realized I had poisoned her. She meant to poison him, and compel me to stab him so that she could kill me in turn without the Bregan D’aerthe starting a war over it."

"Why?"

Jarlaxle blinked at him.

"I annoy a great many people."

Artemis had to admit that was true, if perhaps not quite in the way Jarlaxle meant. He moved forwards into the room proper.

“You should stop drinking that.”

“It’s already in my system and it seems a shame to waste the wine.” But he did set the glass down. And still he didn’t get up.

"She told you not to move."  

"Something like." Jarlaxle smiled surprisingly brightly and his expression was almost fond. "But this one was cheap if very strong. It has a flaw. Now that she's dead the bond passes onto the next person I see."

Artemis closed his eyes.

"You are joking me."

"No I’m not. There was a truth serum in there too." He sniffed delicately, as if offended. “Honestly I am surprised there was room in the glass for the wine.”

A part of him thought grimly that it said much of drow, that Jarlaxle would trust a human assassin over his underlings.

"How long does it last?"

"A few more hours.” The white feather shifted as he inclined his head. “I would like to go home, if you will give the word."

I would like to go home too. I could make you let me go.

But back to what, exactly? He hadn’t had a genuine challenge for years, nothing to truly test himself against. Just an endless daze of mediocre contracts. People died so easily, guards didn’t know to look into the shadows, he escaped incompetent watchmen with ease and then he awaited his next job. His attempts to work independently had all come to ruin. And so he had simply…existed from day to day, and looked at the hawks that the nobles kept to hunt. A lesser man would have turned to drink.

Besides. Jarlaxle was occasionally funny and it had been some time indeed since he had laughed so much as he did now.

“Abbil?” His smile was fading a little. “Can I get up? My leg is cramping.”

Gods, who wanted this in a partner? He nodded and extended a hand to pull Jarlaxle up, surprised as always by how strong his grip was. The drow immediately started to fuss at his clothes, adjusting his hat.

"Come on, you can do that later."

Jarlaxle stopped halfway through pinning his brooch back on and Artemis swore softly, rethreading his words.

“Let’s leave now and you can fix your clothes whenever you want.”  

Jarlaxle smiled a little at his struggles. It was a strange expression, softer around the edges than Artemis was used to seeing on him.

“So considerate. Oh! Wait-" and turning away towards the drow in the bed Jarlaxle drew a dagger.

“Are you trying to steal my job now?”

But Jarlaxle instead pressed the hilt into the sleeping Mizzan’s hand and stood back, clearly pleased with himself.

“There! Now it will look like he killed her. And he will either have to submit to the incoming woman and hope she has a taste for older menfolk, or come running to me.”

“And you can ransom him back for gold.”

“Perhaps. Although I do think he is worth more in the long run, don’t you? The artstyle is very popular, but it could do with some controversy. A little bit of colour, a few more men in positions of power, what do you think?”

“I think it’s time to bring us home with that trinket of yours.”

And it was surely some bizarre side effect of the potion that Jarlaxle curled into his side and sighed happily, and seemed to lose his balance as they came out of the portal and had to cling onto his arm to stay upright. He seemed well enough to scan the hallway, ears perked, and Artemis felt the tension ease out of his shoulders as he determined they were alone.

“Tedious evening.” He suddenly started to fiddle at the buttons on Artemis’ shirt, though they weren’t shiny in the least. “Come in and lie down with me.”

“Absolutely not.” He reached out to lift the eyepatch, peering at his pupils for signs of dilation. “She must have dosed you with an aphrodisiac as well.”

“How dare you, I have absolutely no need for-”  

"You aren't yourself." He twisted Jarlaxle’s hands out of his shirt and ignored his grumble of protest.

"I am always myself."

"Not now you aren't." Even if he had wanted company, and he never did, the thought of taking advantage of someone was sickening. "It’s just the potion talking."

"It isn't."

And that was worse. He stepped away.

"You'll feel better after you sleep. Goodnight.”

“It could be!” Jarlaxle sighed down the hallway after him. “Goodnight, abbil.”

What an informative evening!

Jarlaxle was not intoxicated one whit, for he knew well the nature of his company and both had lined his stomach with charcoal and worn all his strongest charms. That and a quick sleight of hand had sent the potion into Mizzan’s drink, and the man was so exhausted that it had only taken a word to get him to sleep.

He sent a message to his quickest streetrunners and watched from his study window as they darted out across the clawrift and dispersed into the city. Mizzan wouldn't get far before the house guard caught up to him, not without help. After that, well. He knew of some houses that would appreciate an artist.

His own included. A sacrilegious thought perhaps, for men did not lead a house. But why not? They did so on the surface after all, Artemis said it was in fact the norm.

Ah, his human. Artemis hadn't demanded anything out of him at all, despite thinking himself in a position to do so. Not a magical item, not a favour, not even coin or weaponry. That was...so very endearing. Displays of seeming vulnerability might seem a counterintuitive way to win the trust of a master assassin, but Jarlaxle had spent his whole life learning how to read people.

For all his aura of menace and capacity for violence Artemis was not a sadist and didn’t seem to take especial pleasure in killing or maiming, so much as he did in a job well done. And he wasn’t sure how to approach companionable feeling. He knew the human had spent most of his life alone, aggressively alone, least even the casual friendship distract from him from honing all his skills to a murderously sharp edge. There was something to be admired in that. Too often, the companions of one’s youth only served to weigh one down.

But now he was amongst fighters his equal without the immediate need to kill them to survive. And he didn’t quite know what to do with that reality, how to grow within it. Didn’t quite know what to do with Jarlaxle himself, although he was plainly fascinated by him. A perfectly normal reaction, for he had made himself to be fascinating in all the worst and best ways.

But such a state of affairs left Artemis a little off kilter, just enough for Jarlaxle to influence him more than any mere human could. It was a great degree of responsibility. He intended to be very careful with it and handle him as lightly as he would a fine-cut diamond. Artemis was more precious than that, after all, in that one day they could be friends. He rather liked the thought of having a friend that could keep up with him.

But all of those fine plans required time and patience and belonged to the Jarlaxle of the future. The Jarlaxle of the present was much more interested in Mizzan.

They had run in parallel for some time now, though they had never met face to face before tonight. The family hadn’t allowed their precious artist outside the house, but he had often taken his work to a balcony overlooking their private grounds. And Jarlaxle, being a resourceful kind of fellow, had found a nice nearby laneway from where to serenade him with some well chosen songs. And Mizzan, though the danger was great, had been brave enough to sing so softly back to him. His voice was as lovely as his art.

It was so terribly repressive to be housebound. He remembered what it was like, walls of shadow and stone closing in around him, swallowing up all his thoughts, every shred of individuality, muffling every sound he made. He pushed the memories back and thought instead most happily of how Mizzan had known him by his voice alone, his hands clenching in his robe for fear the house matron would detect the bond between them. Jarlaxle wanted very badly to feel such creative hands on him.

And now it seemed that his streetrunners had been successful in finding him, for he heard the clattering of boots and the noise in the lower fortress that suggested a stranger amongst his men. He rose with and took his time searching the wine rack, choosing a good year. Let Mizzan sweat a little amongst his overenthusiastic fans. He in contrast would appear quite the calm and dashing savior to sweep him away from it. Such a chaotic evening and wild greeting by a virtual mob would surely make his company and study a comparative haven while they hashed out the details of repayment and protection.

And after that, well. Perhaps it could be a good night yet.

One I have been wrestling with for some time as regular followers will remember. A touchy subject perhaps in a world overrun with PC morality in the place of a backbone but one that has merit and deserves to be aired, and preparing our families for the realities of the real world is basic to prepping and corporal punishment reflects the realities of the real world, the one outside of the internet, video games system, safe-spaces, and the make-believe of TV and the movies.

When I was 11 years old I had a friend who’s room looked to me like the inside of a Toy’s R Us. He had every toy I think I had ever seen. While playing in his house he used a word kids shouldn’t and his father immediately banished him to his room as punishment and told me to go home. All the way home all I could think about was his “punishment” because my parents believed in and practiced corporal punishment. I don’t know what kind of adult he became but I still considered him lucky as a child as any kid would have loved to be banished to his room full of toys.

The only edits I have made are to the grammar/readability and flow of Soma’s excellent work. 

  We may have heard from an elder “You need a spanking” or “there have to be consequences” perhaps from a caring employer over a mistake at work. For some it reminds us of childhood days when spanking was a part of our relationship with our parents, disciplining us to learn the knots of the world, to instill that there are consequences to our actions, sometimes immediate ones, sometimes with the addition of a physiological “worry period” in anticipation of the punishment created by the words “just wait until your father/mother gets home!”

When Society Defines Rights and Wrongs  

The practice of spanking a child dates back to the Biblical ages and The Bible even advocates the practice of spanking as a safe methodology for reprimanding a child, without infliction of harm while at the same time, becoming a mode of imparting discipline. Spanking is a sharp flick of the hand or wooden–paddle held with the hand on the buttocks of the child. The idea is to make him or her feel the pain to understand that discipline has been broken and it needs reprimand with the buttocks being the usual point of contact, though slaps on hands can also instill a similar message. In my opinion strikes anywhere else are a problem and should be avoided.

According to some psychologists, spanking is embarrassing for the child because before inflicting the sting it requires baring the buttocks, that is, removing the clothes and then imparting the sting. Your call, not required in my opinion.

However there are those that believe baring the buttocks is a psychological method of helping the child come out of embarrassment and actually delivers a cathartic effect in the child’s psychology. Whatever the reality the truth is spanking is still considered a safe method of child reprimand all over the world.

It should be remembered that spanking is a private affair of disciplining and should be practiced in private with the child without any third person being present – even his or her sibling. Using the occasion to set an examples for others (siblings) by letting them watch is open for discussion between the parents as to its drawbacks vs its benefits. One has to remember that every child has prestige, a self image that we do not want to damage and peers can be cruel. The moment we break the privacy, not only does the child becomes shy or rebels, but the effect of spanking loses significance as the punishment becomes more central to the child’s memory than the act that brought it about.

There should be set rules so that the child learns to recognize what is acceptable and when and does not normally break the law to get the spanking. To establish disciplines parents must formulate some code of conduct and make it known to the child verbally. They should be sternly told what is not at all acceptable and that the violation of such conduct will call for reprimand in the way of a spanking. Parents need to articulate lines such as “at no point of time shall I accept any lies or false statements from you. ” Parents’ personality plays a great deal in determining the discipline of the child. A lofty personality, as in one where the parents sets the standard that they are the parent and not a friend, means that the child knows when they are serious and does not normally cross the stated boundary line, but if they do a spanking is to be expected because they broke the code.

To keep the gravity of spanking it should not be used too frequently and used only when the matter is serious and warrants the disciplining. There should be no false threats given to the child. If threats are given and spanking not practiced, the child will develop the habit to take the threat casually and refrain from disciplining himself/herself since there are no real consequences to their actions. Hence it is always advisable to speak less of spanking as a threat as to practice it in reality.

The age group that is fit for spanking is two to four years old. This is because less than two years the child is innocent and does not commit any serious indiscipline which requires spanking. When the child grows more than five, he/she may not fear spanking anymore and needs some reinforced, stricter form of punishment, a removal/time-out NOT in a room filled with toys and distractions. This the Indian Pundit Chanakya has also told in his Sanskrit sloka. In fact he had told very nicely how to behave with children of different age-groups, a lesson which is still taken by masters as a golden rule of parenting/teaching.

Those who are dead set against spanking must realize that the child of the age group two to four only understands physical threat as a mode of disciplining. This is because their self-esteem is not very well grown and matured. With the fierce world laying its prey on child victims, that children often do not understand, the child must be made fearful of some method of immediate punishment which prevents him or her from venturing into the wilderness without the knowledge and guidance of parents. If children are not taught limitations, they will experiment which can be dangerous for them. Wild experimentation can become a trap to rob away their innocence or ruin them. Sparing the punishment is most of the time sparing the safety and guidance to childhood.

However, children are intelligent and sensitive; they must also understand the spankers right intention in disciplining them. Spanking works best when it is given out of unconditional love. Some spanking memories may become the treasure of the child when he or she grows up to a self-reliant matured man or woman, relishing the days of childhood van-guarded by parents and teachers. To be curt and courteous, because little kids also demands courtesy, the spanker should at some point of time make it clear that the next time the child must discipline himself so that such a situation can be avoided. It is natural that maybe at that point of time the child will cry some serene cries and want to relax on the lap of the spanker melting in his mind the little dynamites of remorse and complaints he or she has formed about the spanker.

A word of caution which should be strictly adhered is that no sweet caring nanny or grandma should try to save the child and stop the spanking because it demeans the estime of the spanker in the child’s mind, undermines his/her authority and gives the child the liberty to continue his or her childish menace without the fear of being reprimanded. Being the cause of sparing the rod is actually putting the child in the threshold of a danger called indiscipline and this can often lead the coveted child astray.
