i've been trying to find or recall the book where i read this for a while...who knows if i will ever find it (i'm condemned to a life of being a research-addict with poor organizational skills and ADHD), but it was something to the effect of the use of 'princes' in the 16c...and anyway, the gist of it was that it precludes the tradition that the extra letters were 'shoved' into princess elizabeth's birth announcement (anticipating 'prince', not 'princess').
#oh well. i mean i might find it. there's quite a few sources that i've recalled enough to summarize but not to directly find#and i usually find them once i stop looking for them lol#i wish i could remember more details than that...but distincly i remember that was my takeaway#we're really drawn to illustrative examples#obviously it doesn't mean that that wasn't the expectation#but it's just another piece of the traditional narrative that doesn't quite fit the 'disaster'#bcus yk you have like wolf hall where henry's delivery of 'cancel the jousts' sounds like he's reading a death warrant#but those were cancelled upon mary's birth asw#and that sort of context is missing in most tudor dramas#and in part that's self-fulfilling and almost referential... that context is missing#mainly because it's the late 1520s-early to mid-1530s that tudor dramas focus on
