#bc they don’t want to implicate a race war and alienate their fanbase. which i think is very on the nose

how was the new black panther? did you enjoy it?
it was a coherent movie as far as marvel movies go but in true marvel fashion bc this is part of a franchise which requires each movie to hit certain plot points it was juggling so many subplots as to feel threadbare at times. the tribute to chadwick was there obv but i wonder what it would have been had this been a truly independent movie that didn’t need to worry about the extrinsic universal stuff
related to that the maintained cia presence in these movies at the expense of other characters is so annoying lol. more on that later considering it forms my biggest gripe with the movie (surprise surprise) but i was really frustrated with how minimal nakia’s role was in this considering her connection to t’challa. obv focus on shuri was paramount but i personally think they should have been co-mcs rather than nakia being relegated to a secondary role
the performances were phenomenal. i think letitia wright took a little while to come into it but by the second half she was enrapturing and angela of course took my breath away so many times. i also loved tenoch’s ability to express this palpable grief and anger and yearning all at once. his command of the character was subtle but so enthralling
the costuming was also so gorgeous like i was a bit peeved by the rest of the movie visually bc the cgi was so bland and the fight sequences were mostly like bluntly cut melee sequences not to mention the first half of the movie was so badly lit but the costuming definitely saved it for me like godddd angela and lupita and tenoch looked ethereal at all times
from what i understand in the comics namor attacks wakanda for no good reason so the evolved lore in this movie complicates that a bit bc now he does have a good reason to be at odds with wakanda’s mission statement but of course in true state sponsored media fashion his initial antagonism against colonizers and their facilitators is so exaggerated as to make him holistically genocidal so that viewers are justified in accepting that he is a villain. so yay for race bending but nay for the fact that regardless of that race bending he is essentially doomed from the start even though he is introduced to have valid grievances that run parallel to wakanda’s
more specifically on that, below is my main takeaway from the movie, esp in context of the fact that originally the cia factored way more into the conflict between the two nations but apparently this was scaled back in script revisions lol..
