the fact that constance knows something is wrong with mr. benedict ("we need to find mr. benedict. something is very wrong") like. on one hand it's possible she's just getting a like. premonition, like an alarm bell, that something Plot-Relevant is wrong (lol not that she has meta powers but like. Relevant To Her And Her Situation) but also consider she's attuned to people she loves she's close to and she's like known he's been worried and scared and frustrated and trying to be strong and he's just been like. a warm, gentle glow in some back corner of her mind, one of the connections she's formed and hesitantly let stay because she cares, and it's--it's nice. (it's not all badly-hidden fear and distress, although she can tell he's. well. 'a glass house held together by desperate optimism'. but it's said with some affection, even if bluntly and with ruthless honesty, because she can also feel that affection he has for her, the love, the curiosity and kindness) and then like. then she feels it. she feels the insidious influence, feels the involuntary elation, false and sugar-thin and so unlike him, feels it pressing down on him. and she knows something is horribly wrong
#i think really though the implications of this#i mean the implications already exist with just constance being psychic#and the glass house line. but like. it's even more intense in this interpretatino#bc like. once again it complicates her dynamic with mr benedict#bc he is essentially her father (even if she isnt admitting it) but by nature of the story--and by nature of constance's abilities--they're#well they're never exactly going to have a normal father&daughter dynamic#she sees him vulnerable and flawed in a way most kids don't see their parents for a long time#and he takes care of her and protects her and he does succeed in a lot of ways--particularly with emotional support--but he also can't alwa#can't always do that. which is true of regular parents too admittedly but this is a little more extreme#i think it's particularly interesting that constance can see his vulnerability/flaws/guilt/etc#both bc shes very intelligent and bc of her abilities#like her description of him as 'not strong' but 'a glass house held together by desperate optimism'#like. this is how she sees him. not unkindly but it's like#hmfgnhfnghh im going insane#mbs spoilers#constance contraire#nicholas benedict#mbs disney
