The Bureau of Labor Statistics shared more information about inflation with Wall Street “super users” than previously disclosed, emails from the agency show. … Emails obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request show that the agency — or at least the economist who sent the original email, a longtime but relatively low-ranking employee — was in regular communication with data users in the finance industry, apparently including analysts at major hedge funds. And they suggest that there was a list of super users, contrary to the agency’s denials. … Many of the recipients appear to have been in-house economists at large investment banks such as Barclays, Nomura and BNP Paribas. Others work for private research firms, which sell their analysis to investors. And some recipients appear to have been analysts at large hedge funds such as Millennium Capital Partners, Brevan Howard and Citadel, which trade directly on their research.
There is no evidence in the emails that the employee provided early access to coming statistical releases or directly shared other data that wasn’t available to the public. In several instances, the employee told users that he couldn’t provide information they had requested because it would require disclosing nonpublic data. But the emails show that the employee did engage in extended, one-on-one email exchanges with data users about how the inflation figures are put together. Such details, though highly technical, can be of significant interest to forecasters, who compete to predict inflation figures to hundredths of a percentage point. Those estimates, in turn, are used by investors making bets on the huge batches of securities that are tied to inflation or interest rates.
What the BLS clearly needs is a Tumblr, hedge funds can submit questions will be public instead of only shared with a superusers email list.

Japanese Lenders Stay Steadfast
Japan’s major financial institutions, including Mizuho Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), are standing firm in their support for Gautam Adani’s conglomerate despite US bribery charges against the Indian billionaire and his associates. While global banks such as Barclays and Jefferies Financial Group reassess their exposure, the Japanese lenders remain confident in their ties to the Adani Group, citing the conglomerate’s cash-generating assets and strong ties with the Indian government.
Insiders revealed that the banks do not anticipate a significant long-term impact from the allegations and are open to providing fresh financing if required. However, spokespeople for the three Tokyo-based banks declined to comment, as did an Adani Group representative. The controversy stems from allegations of a $250 million bribery scheme aimed at securing solar energy contracts in India, which Adani has dismissed as baseless. The company is engaging with lenders and investors to reaffirm its position and address concerns.
Global Banks and Investor Caution
In contrast to the steadfast approach of Japanese banks, other international financial institutions have adopted a cautious stance. Barclays, a long-time partner of Adani, has paused new financing arrangements and reduced its direct lending and bond underwriting exposure. Jefferies, which defended Adani during previous allegations, has taken a wait-and-see approach, avoiding new deals until the legal process unfolds. At least two other major US banks have also suspended plans to fund Adani’s projects.
The fallout from the allegations is affecting Adani’s market performance. The conglomerate’s dollar bonds and shares plunged following the US indictment, prompting credit rating agencies, including S&P Global Ratings and Fitch, to downgrade their outlook on Adani companies. Additionally, global firms like TotalEnergies SE and governments like Kenya’s are halting investments and contracts with Adani until the legal implications become clearer.
Adani’s Resilience and Broader Support
Despite the challenges, Japanese banks are not alone in their support for Gautam Adani. Middle Eastern financial institutions, including Emirates NBD Bank PJSC, have also expressed confidence in the conglomerate’s ability to manage its obligations. These banks remain committed to their existing projects and are open to future collaborations, citing robust due diligence and the solid performance of Adani’s asset-heavy businesses, such as ports and airports.
Experts attribute the resilience of Japanese and Middle Eastern banks to their strategic interest in high-growth emerging markets like India. “Japanese and Middle Eastern banks see an opportunity to align with the growth potential of Indian conglomerates like Adani,” said Ashutosh Mishra, head of research at Ashika Stock Broking Ltd.
Although Adani Enterprises’ stock initially dropped 23% following the US charges, it has since partially recovered. The group maintains that Gautam Adani and his associates are not implicated under the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, offering a glimmer of hope for investors and partners. However, as global scrutiny intensifies, the coming months will be pivotal in shaping Adani’s financial relationships and market standing.

1. Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party may not reach a sole majority in the lower house general election to be held on Oct. 27, a new Nikkei poll shows, potentially setting the stage for political turmoil not seen since 2009, when the LDP lost control to the now-defunct Democratic Party. The LDP needs 233 of the lower house's 465 seats to reach a sole majority. As of Oct. 9, the day of the lower house's dissolution, the LDP alone had 256 seats. Of the 289 seats that will go to directly elected politicians from single-seat constituencies, the poll showed that the LDP is considered likely to win only about 30%. Of the 176 seats chosen through a proportional representation system that divides the country into 11 regions, the LDP is expected to win fewer than the 72 seats it won in 2021. 2. Barclays, via Financial Times:
The economic circumstances facing China have parallels with Japan’s experience after its asset bubble burst in the early 1990s. This created the term ‘Japanification’, which is typically defined as a combination of slow growth, low inflation, and a low policy rate, accompanied by deteriorating demographic trends. To measure this phenomena, a Japanese economist, Takatoshi Ito, introduced a Japanification Index, which measured the sum of the inflation rate, nominal policy rate, and GDP gap. To apply to China’s economy, we have adjusted this index, replacing the GDP gap with working-age population growth, as the estimation methods of GDP gaps differ across nations and working-age population is by far the most fundamental determinant for long-term growth. Our amended index shows that China’s economy has become more ‘Japanised’ than Japan’s recently, albeit marginally.
3. China will extend 4 trillion yuan ($562 billion) in financing to property developers through banks by the end of the year, in its latest effort to prop up an ailing real estate sector that has dragged down overall growth, authorities said on Thursday. The country will expand a so-called white list of property development projects that banks have been using to guide lending decisions since January, officials from multiple agencies including the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the People's Bank of China told a media briefing in Beijing. China had approved 2.23 trillion yuan in fresh financing for such developments as of Wednesday, and it is expected to approve at least 4 trillion yuan worth of such loans by the end of 2024, said Ni Hong, the housing minister.
